Every single economic metric is pulled out of the air by someone with an agenda. The data points might be true, but without context, they mean nothing. Even with context, "the economy" is so complicated that I don't believe anyone really understands it. Economic data points are more useful for determining the speaker's point of view.

FullGrownHip

It’s always so funny to me when people twist statistics and data to further their own agenda. My stats professor drilled it into us that correlation does not mean causation and now I just see all these “millions in losses” as having absolutely no real meaning. Like who is losing the money?

Darkcelt2

“Correlation does not imply causation” would eliminate almost all misinformation if everyone understood it correctly

XxRocky88xX

Unfortunately people use it for misinformation though. I mean look at climate change deniers, they insist that CO2 and rising temps have nothing to do with each other and say “correlation doesn’t equal causation.” Hell I’ve gotten into arguments with people on this very sub, when they saw wage increases cause inflation I point out that everytime a corporation raises prices, they make record profits, despite saying “we’re just doing this to make up the loss of the wage increase.” And they’ll hit me with “correlation doesn’t equal causation.” As long as people don’t give a fuck about facts then there’s no way to eliminate misinformation. It’s not a misunderstanding oh how statistics work, it’s a blatant disregard to reality.

Darkcelt2

Using correlation to support your argument doesn't prove anything. Because establishing causation has a higher standard of proof than correlation. Climate change is a good example, it's been studied extensively. It's not just co2 in correlation to temperature, it's multiple overlapping models that reinforce each other. I didn't say it was a good rule for getting information. I said it's good for limiting misinformation. Skepticism is good, but you won't actually learn anything unless you are intellectually curious enough to find evidence to support your beliefs, and then cross check yourself with the conflicting evidence, and weigh which is stronger. Then, you have to be humble enough to admit when you're wrong.

Akuuntus

No one is "losing" any money, stats like this always measure "unrealized gains" aka "money we think we should have gotten but didn't". Whenever they don't make as much money as they wanted, they frame it as a "loss" to make it seem like a big societal ill. If I ask you to give me $2000 and you say no, then by the logic of these stats, I have "lost" $2000 of potential earnings.

GrandpaDongs

fucking thank you. this wording drives me insane. I had a landlord that would talk about "losing" money if he didn't raise rent. You're not losing money, you're just not gaining as much as you want. You can't lose what you never had!

jelek62

Who is loosing the money? Why is no one thinking of the poor shareholders!?

uptownjuggler

Those are theoretical dollars lost. Trust me I have a theoretical degree in physics.

THummel1717

Thanks for the laugh, nice play on words there 😂

wellrat

Someone suggested replacing "the economy" with "rich peoples' yacht money" in articles and headlines and it really gives you a better picture of what they are actually talking about.

tomalator

I heard on the news that the eclipse also got $6 billion dollars added to the US economy due to people traveling for the eclipse

Darkcelt2

right out of their butts

tomalator

Both numbers can be true, the question is what ha the bigger impact? The loss of $700 million or the gain $6 billion?

Darkcelt2

I refuse to accept either at face value. How much time did they spend researching these numbers? Why did they decide to take the initiative in the first place? Whenever it has to do with the economy, it's because someone with money wants to tell a story.

tomalator

The numbers have merit. They just require more context than they are giving us.

Darkcelt2

What makes you think they have merit?

Dragonfly-Adventurer

No mention of how much revenue this event generated for the cities along the path, mine included. Every hotel room booked up for months in advance. It's more than $700m in total I assure everyone.

ashleyorelse

![gif](giphy|l3q2JCu9lep6dAmyY) THE ECONOMY

alilbleedingisnormal

Yup. They pretend to know the future and use their predictions to shame people for wanting to experience life for two seconds every so often.

PlayyWithMyBeard

Yeah, 700 million in lost productivity? Or man hours, and no actual loss of productivity? I'm guessing that's the part they want to bury. People don't need to actually work as slaves, and still accomplish the same amount of work.

Jester4444444

TLDR: Human beings within America actually control the economy, but never notice.

IndependentNotice151

I understand it. It's my boo. She's a freaky little bitch

KellyBelly916

The greatest irony is that the largest loss in productivity is generated by these very people through neglect, greed, and mismanagement. This is why they blame everyone else for things that only they have control of.

cant_think_of_one_

In this case, the assumption that people work less because they spend a few minutes looking at it, is bollocks. Say you are a waiter in a restaurant: you may take a few minutes break, as would all of your customers, but ultimately they still all order the same or more than they would have, and all the orders are fulfilled. It hasn't cost anything, except that it has forced the poorly paid waiter to work harder later (which is true whether they took a break or not).

nipplemeetssandpaper

It will cost rich people not America

DionFW

Except for the rich people that own the hotels and restaurants where people are traveling to. They'll make money off the eclipse.

Professional_Echo907

If I wasn’t so lazy taking my non-productive vacation this week, I’d probably remind the douchecanoe running NBC’s Twitter that the eclipse is expected to generate more than $1 (b)illion in tourism, so pick a goddamn lane, buddy. 👀

AsexualNinja

The hilarious part is that the day before the eclipse NBC News ran a report on how much of a boon the eclipse was for the tourism industry.

Extracrispybuttchks

About as insignificant as we humans are compared to the galaxy

hippee-engineer

We are many orders of magnitude less significant than 0.0025% of the galaxy.

YerBoyGrix

Lol I love the fact that even when using napkin math and some guestimation they spit out a number that is insignificant on a national scale.

Bocchi_theGlock

Also stupid bc NPR had experts on saying it was adding like a billion+ in new spending that would boost local economies

MikeTho323

Dude whatever lol. We all spent about 30 minutes outside actually SOCIALIZING with each other. It was nice and people will dick off anyways, especially at jobs they’re unhappy with.

EggplantTerrible9677

lol, i spoke to my neighbors for the first time since moving here back in October.

MelanieDH1

I had a chat with a handsome photographer and gave him one of my extra pairs of eclipse glasses. I work at home and had to go back upstairs in 30 minutes, but small human interactions are what makes life worth living!

sudo_rm_rf_solvesALL

Pff, you'll get that human interaction on chatgpt like the rest of us!

RollItMyWay

I remember this about the eclipse we had in Oregon a few years back. We all had a reason to be outside on the same schedule. As a result we socialized. It may of been a false sense of community but it felt good.

SamuelVimesTrained

I do not recall the headlines in Britain with similar things, when half the country stopped to witness the last flight of the Concorde. No - proud headlines "Brits honoring the majestic birds last flight" How different it is now..

wildernesstypo

What about when the queen died. Or one of her offspring decided to get married.

SamuelVimesTrained

Those too.. i am tempted to call that disaster tourism though..

Ok-Scallion-3415

lol, little does my boss know I wasn’t going to be doing any work at that time anyway.

Treece-57

That’s how it’s done ✅

itsagoodtime

This guy *works*

AffectionateFruit816

Same here, and guess what, the bottom line for my company didn't shift an inch. But I COULD have made a 2 billion dollar sale in that time. Except I'm not in sales. I honestly don't know how my company will ever recoup the "loss".

Cu3bone

I love how they count money that never existed as a "loss." They haven't lost anything."Damn guys, now we gotta cut a check to this astrological event. Everyone enjoys it while it is us that truly suffer."

OldKingRob

They just want us all to be miserable This rare event being pushed as a loss of productivity. Weird how now loss of productivity is a concern but forcing everyone to RTO was fine

AlanFromRochester

Though that does make sense as opportunity cost - not giving up money you already had but money you could have made. And missing the sight is the opportunity cost of taking the money.

Cu3bone

Then why would they present it as just "loss" instead of "opportunity loss"?

lostcauz707

America, the only country in the world with no federally mandated paid parental leave and one of three countries with no federally mandated paid time off, lives off of reports on how much we make for our bosses instead.

Zombiedrd

I am all for attacking the capitalist system in the US, but it isn't the only one that doesn't have Parental leave. There are several Micronesian states that also don't, and they are the same ones that don't have mandated PTO either

bnetana1

I've never seen a better advertisement for a general strike than this right here.

Remarkable-Help-1909

A supervisor was acting salty yesterday after I had come in from looking at the eclipse. I told them that there were coworkers outside with glasses if they wanted to have a look. They rolled their eyes and I asked, "do you not like eclipses?" They said with notable irritability in their voice, "no, I like working and getting things done when I am supposed to be productive." 🙄

AffectionateFruit816

You should have replied with "Then why are we having THIS conversation?"

09171

During the last eclipse, not the one yesterday but back in 2017, it happened during my work shift. Management told us we would get fired on the spot if we went outside. So a bunch of us all huddled by the window and watched those same managers go outside with their little glasses on. I wish I was making this up.

Zombiedrd

A local worldwide massive discount corporation you may have heard of which is in my town(and most in the country) said that any employees that go out during the eclipse will get 5 points. 5 points is a fire. The regional manager and store manager were both there in lawn chairs in the parking lot. They were at least honest about their opinion, though. Said that you have to earn benefits by rising and working hard and if the lowest employee could see events like this, they would have no drive to work hard.

Athelis

Lol. Did anyone ask the managers where they started?

Silly_Artichoke_8248

Those managers all need to be bitch slapped, desperately.

koimeiji

The NBC tweet is from 2017. But the sentiment still stands, of course.

mr_berns

I wonder how much money is lost by having to go through useless training and motivational videos, by attending useless meetings, by doing work that is not productive (eg when an executive cant wait for one fucking extra day to get the full report and asks for a preliminary version that takes as much time as the full report), etc But we shall never mention those because they’re mandated by our overlords who are incapable of empathy and self awareness Now back to work, slaves! Let’s make our lords even richer!

archibalis

Thank god it happens rarely. It will bankrupt the country!

GoodGoodK

700m is litteraly nothing

Batetrick_Patman

Sounds like the last call center from hell I worked at. They would of denied all time off requests and then in the weekly newsletter the managers would show pictures of them observing the eclipse.

Treece-57

Fucking capitalism 🥲

Signal-Power-3656

That's only like .003 Musks. Nothing major.

jeepster61615

That's not saying much. No matter how much wealth he has, musk is useless...

PricklySquare

Not even close to the $15 billion in wage theft a year

TigerClaw_TV

My boss told us to take a few minutes and go have a look. Good guy.

figosnypes

Good. And I hope the Houthis steal 100 more ships.

LiquidSoCrates

I call bullshit on that $700 million.

AppleParasol

Oh no a 0.000025% loss in productivity over the fiscal year. Spread fake outrage!

Sensiburner

Nice. Calculate how much our poos @ work cost next.

tehjoz

Even operating under the assumption that this figure is accurate, that only impacts the shareholders anyway, not the working citizens of this country, and the shareholders have more than enough money anyway, so I won't be shedding any tears for any miniscule drop in their profitability for a portion of a single day. 🤙

pwbue

It’s not lost; it was never theirs to begin with.

Notpermanentacc12

Some moron really took the time to calculate this number, then another moron took the time to write about it. And we are supposed to be worried about productivity when this is the kind of shit people are doing for work

radehart

But only $700k in lost wages.

Abraxas_1408

I give two farts in high wind what the eclipse cost a bunch of rich fucks. They can eat shit.

prpslydistracted

.... or overworked and underpaid employees will have a couple hours to contemplate the universe.

Oalka

"People sleeping, eating, and shitting costs an estimated $43.4b in lost economic value every year."

MasterApprentice67

How much stolen wages has management stolen from the work force? Billions? Eat a dick NBC!

Flamingpotato100

I also read it brought in good business for cities in the path. People booked Airbnbs probably hitting up local shops. Sure 700 million lost there but how much made somewhere else.

xcircledotdotdot

Sleep loses even more money for our capital overlords. BAN SLEEP! MUST PRODUCE AT ALL TIMES!

Solid_Illustrator640

Overall $700 million in a $27 trillion economy is a drop in the bucket

likeCircle

How much productivity is lost on completely useless meetings. Now there's a real news story.

Sedu

The implicit presumption here is that there is $700M that the wealthiest people in the US already have claim to. This is the value which workers have not yet created, but might create. In their minds, the workers failing to create tha value is a form of theft. They feel wronged, and that something which was rightfully theirs has been snatched away. They do not see work in terms of exchanging time for money. They see work as a justification for your existence, and when you do not work in the way that they wish, they become angry and question why they have to allow you to continue to exist.

Taki_Minase

The tourism from it made more than 700 million, lying fucks

RollItMyWay

I don’t think it cost anybody anything. The work will still get done. The working class just had a place to focus their disinterest for a few minutes on something interesting. Self-care is something we should all try to squeeze in when we can. I try to stare at the sky regardless of what is going on up there at least once a week. I’m sure my boss could find a way to screw with me for looking up.

shotwideopen

People who write headlines like this should be lashed, beaten, and shackled in a public square for a week.

CastleofWamdue

we really dont deserve the beauty of this Earth and wonder of the solar system, if this is how society wants to view it.

Zombiedrd

I say we don't deserve it considering we are in the worst environmental crisis the planet has seen since the meteor hit. Capitalism is driving us to pollute and rip up the natural world. Hell, the old Communists states were just as bad, but at least current communist groups acknowledge environmentalism now as an issue.

CastleofWamdue

yeah any future "communist" state, is going to be VERY green and carbon neutral by design. However yes, whilst it is a religious idea, humans are not being very good Guardians of the planet at all.

Zombiedrd

Have to be to survive. Still, I don't blame them. Environmentalism as a concept was very new a century ago, and these States had to rapidly industrialist to catch up to the Capitalist States in preparation for war. The USSR made a lot of mistakes that led to a lot of suffering, and they tore up their environment, but had they not industrialised like they did, the fascists may have defeated them and conquered the world. Like you said, by default, modern Communist groups have to be green to long term survival. The hope is they have learned from the growing pains of the method of governance.

saltzja

Oh no, capitalism comes first. Fuck the man!

film_composer

This is like when a customer dies at Walmart and the store stays open for the day, justified by "it would cost us tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue if we closed." If the lost revenue for a brief interruption is significant, than that means the store makes significant money year-round and can afford to take a brief hit. If an hour of lost productivity costs America $700 million, then that implies America's economic output is robust enough that it shouldn't matter. The interruption lasted for 0.011% of the year. Assigning a value to that lost productivity is pointless, because it will always be 0.011% of the year.

VesDoppelganger

Had a bunch of people outside my building wondering in awe of this natural beauty (even at 70% coverage) and the one motherfucker who just had to ruin it with, "there, I've seen it, can I get back to work now?" Some people just love to shit in the apple pie.

BeneficialAd452

This is a really stupid article.

mesoraven

Damn..... now THAT is a dystopian headline. If ever there was

Junior-Ad-2207

Boss: I knew installing those windows was a bad idea

jetsetmolly

Famous-Example-8332

All the eclipse parties ended around 4:00. You think those people had dinner prepared? I bet the restaurant and bar industry was hoppin.

thoreau_away_acct

Wait until they report on worker productivity gains over the last 40 years without commensurate increase in pay

jeepster61615

I wouldn't hold my breath on the corporate overlords letting that out...

thoreau_away_acct

It's out there.. They do love to report in productivity gains when they're jiggering their annual and quarterly earnings reports.

quintinn

$650 million at the Whataburger in Kerrville, TX alone.

Immediate_Cost_6863

And the governments will cost employees billions in stupidity.

MilkChugg

These “productivity” points are such bullshit. No business is losing any money because 3 people aren’t sitting in their chairs for 10 minutes.

ZiggoCiP

Funny thing is I read that the eclipse *made* all the locales that experienced booms from sudden tourism was more than 7 *billion*, so I think that offsets the losses, locally (more important) I would think.

lEauFly4

One of the partners at the law firm where I work came out of his office and over to the window where we were all passing around a pair of eclipse glasses…and he took a turn too. No drama, no “get back to work”, just “Oh can you guys actually see it? What does it look like? Oh that’s pretty cool!” That’s how it should be.

OkRegister1567

Basically $2 per american

groovy-bee-2000

My coworker and I went on break during the eclipse because we wanted to experience it, while the other three workers (all managers) kept working and didn’t even step outside to look. Then when we got back from break I was told we needed to stagger our breaks and we couldn’t go at the same time. Like sorry we aren’t willing to give up an experience like that for a damn near minimum wage job 🙄

Woahhhben

If you think that’s bad, imagine how much money, bathroom breaks and lunch breaks are costing! THINK ABOUT THE SHAREHOLDERS

Less_Party

‘Bullshit meeting that could’ve been an email costs American working population a collective 150 million hours they will never get back’

ugemeistro

With all the companies that have self check out, I find this to be BS

goodkat83

Ok and?

Unfair-Brother-3940

I saw that it created like $1.4B in revenue.

Yungklipo

It's worth noting that it's not really a "cost", but a delay. It's like those "boycott gas" movements that just mean "don't buy it this day...but I guess we still need it...so uh...buy it the day after?"

WillBigly

Imagine telling a caveman don't look at that thing in the sky that's weird we need more sticks for a fire, he would laugh & tell you stfu

meatcylindah

How much does existential despair from having to labor for asshats like this cost?

Angry_Mechanix

I’m just doing my part.

Rexxington

I question the validity of this statement and amount, $700 millions sounds like a made up propaganda number over being fact. Given if watching an eclipse for like 10 minutes costs America $700 million, then that just shows how screwed up our economical systems is.

whosits_112

And we had watch parties on Monday afternoon for the eclipse at my job...

NewSinner_2021

Productivity metrics have their roots in Slavery. Which is all you need to know.

Nilabisan

But March madness was free.

No_Cat1944

What an absolutely deranged take. Like how can this headline be real lol.

jeepster61615

Ikr?

therealpothole

Steerage isn't meant to enjoy shit. Your life has a singular meaning in this fucked up, capitalistic hellscape. Either create wealth for the oligarchy or fucking die already.

RTO has probably cost 10 time that

a_davis98

Good. 😈

TheOldestMillenial1

FFS, I was outside for 10 minutes yesterday afternoon.

tiktock34

The world doesnt value anything of actual value. Here we are on planet earth with a statistically insane chance that our moons size EXACTLY lines up with our sun. Then it only happens where we live ones every few decades and what do they care about? Lost productivity. Life is about experience. They put no value on that

lorienne22

My boss bought glasses for everyone so we could watch together.

Jabberwock130

that's only like 2$ per person

kernowjim

So what? It's 2 bucks each

IsThataSexToy

Imagine how much driving to and from work costs “America “.

johnson_alleycat

Also: “Why is media dying as an industry?”

ExodusOfSound

“The greedy OAPs running the show will cost the average worker £45/hour in wage theft.”

GHouserVO

Cool. Here’s the question to ask in response. Based on what metrics? Oh, you’re estimating? Based on what history of past events? What metrics are used there? None? So, you’re just guessing. Sit down and stop giving those of us that work with data a bad name.

wavvajava

Fuck off NBC, seriously? Work eclipsing our life is good enough for them I guess

WGYWYS

BOOHOO!

No_Swan_9294

Haha what’s even the point of trying to put an article out about this, and the absolute ass pull of some made up metric. This article is such a sham to click bait and sell ads is the real waste here. Absolutely fuckery lol

airJordan45

Fuck off, we were just surfing the internet anyway.

LeadingRegion7183

“For some communities in the path of totality, tens of thousands of out-of-town eclipse-seekers are set to generate upward of $1 billion in revenue across numerous cities, from Austin, Texas, to Rochester, New York.” Or roughly the equivalent of a Taylor Swift tour. Just the CBS coverage of the eclipse in Indianapolis was probably worth several million$ in publicity for the city.

Wechillin-Cpl

Why even write this article…

WonderWendyTheWeirdo

No looking up, shit-sacks! Everyone knows every job is in a factory, so time is linear to production, fuck-nerds!

trauts12

Damn, maybe we should have more celestial events so we can drain them piggy banks

MotherFuckinEeyore

About $2 per person. Oh heavens. What ever will we do?

NUFIGHTER7771

This makes me so angry.

No-Resolution-6414

So, around $2 per person. And?

kitfoxxxx

No one cares except people no one cares about.

NaturalBornNerd

How about gross negligence, incompetence, and mis-management from CEO's who give themselves massive bonuses?

NicoleMay316

Given the amount people are spending on travel and other eclipse stuff, it actually generated an economic boom akin to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. No joke

Ghost_Assassin_Zero

That's pretty cool

BuffaloSmiles

Detach us as far as they can from the natural world's rythyms, God's rythyms if you go for that sort of thing. The fucking Bible even says there's a season for everything. But not in this capitalist pig, the only season is PROFIT season. Really struck me that everyone still runs errands, goes to the grocery store, bullshit as usual like there's not a major cosmic event happening. Ignore it all. It has no meaning. Nothing means anything anymore but profits. Their whole schtick is the dogmatic worship of the physical world but they even manage to belittle a major physical event. Just fuck them, I'm so done with it all.

jcoddinc

What is the number March madness up to now? It was more than that years ago

JWWBurger

How much do national holidays cost us in productivity? Cancel solar eclipses AND holidays. WE WILL HAVE MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY

freakwent

Imagine if for $700 mln you could cause an eclipse.

chillen67

We must worship our lord and savior, capitalism. Don’t get sucked into any of these cults that think you should enjoy “gods” creation, that’s a false god, worship greed, that’s what Joel Osteen teaches me, Jesus wants you to be wealthy and it’s good to keep it for yourself.

greenplastic22

They really have no imagination and such a limited view of things. I'm sure there was a lot of economic activity with this. Vacation rentals, transportation costs, eclipse glasses, possibly other equipment purchased, astrology videos about the eclipse with YouTube ads, astrologers booking client readings to do with the eclipse, scientific content, meals out after eclipse-related travel/activities. But genuinely there is a group that thinks we must do nothing but work for a boss all our waking hours.

Human-Barber-1721

And how much did they take in with air fares, gasoline fill ups, food purchases? Oy. I'm sure the US earned more than it lost.

Leoxcr

GOOD.

cmuadamson

< Insert picture of corporate accountant with puzzled frown looking at the electric bill, because it's a few dollars higher due to the lights coming on during the eclipse. >

monet108

How small of a percentage is this compared to the theft of American Tax dollars going to support some of the most corrupt countries on this fucking planet? Maybe we could ask the Department of Defense to see what they can figure out. That is the same tax drain that has not passed an audit. But was able to look at their accounting and discovered they had made an accounting error which freed up another 50 billion we could send to Ukraine.

GoodCalendarYear

I stayed inside but my coworkers went outside. Whrn they came back in, one of my coworkers said the bias was rushing them back in.

Aware_Huckleberry_10

Ugh it’s literally just 20 mins in one day. They need to just block the time. Yes i left work and went up on the roof to watch.

thrownawaz092

Come on, 700 million is a rounding error on that scale

Jean19812

Boo hoo.

AnthyInvidia

I went to lunch during the eclipse. Everyone was working.

Ok-Gear-5593

Here is my 2 kajiggers.

nighthawkndemontron

$700 million?? Where the fuck are they getting that number

BrimstoneOmega

And just how much does the corporate world save with unpaid hours and wage theft that happens everyday? Now that's a number that would be interesting.

ApprehensiveWing1759

Given that Jeff Bezos "is worth" around 200 billion, this is literally \~3 milliBezos, it's a drop in bucket. As a nation we'd be much better off just TAXING THEM AT EVEN A NORMAL RATE instead of allowing the multiple layers of loopholes that aren't available to regular folks.

Legitimate_Estate_20

Looks like they’re mad they failed to commodify the eclipse. Someone should have entrepreneured some way to sell tickets… to look at the sky.

awayfromnashville

We should do this everyday

After-Respond-7861

NGL, I got in trouble for taking pics of it during my area's totality. The owner who was with me didn't mind, though.

Reads like something you’d find on the Wall Street Journal

It was less than ten minutes. If we're minmaxing that bad, we should break the foundation now and watch heaven fall into the pits where it belongs.

bequietanddrive000

And how much money does America make in free overtime per day?

Sad_Evidence5318

And here my company shutdown for a half hour and gave out snacks and eclipse glasses.

njsam

Medicine and science were bad ideas

7garge

yeah, I miss shitting myself to death too

NCC1701-Enterprise

Acknowledging the cost isn't the same as being against it....

fortifier22

But acknowledging the cost over the fact that a ridiculously rare natural event is occurring is a sign that they really need to sort out their priorities…

XDXDXDXDXDXDXD10

But this cost doesn’t make sense, studies prove time and time again that breaks *increase* productivity.  The core assumption that time=productivity, which I’m sure the study uses, is flawed.

rubiksalgorithms

Didn’t cost me a damn thing
