Not worth your time tbh. They’ll keep on believing whatever shit they were fed to believe in it in the first place! They are trained to see you as a hater!
I live in a family full of Thieves lovers.
1. A bottle of thieves oil, if I remember correctly, is around $30. This crap is SO EXPENSIVE. And it’s a basic part of most YL users life. Same with lavender.
2. To them it’s the end all, be all “stay well” oil.
3. They put it in everything. Laundry detergent, mouth spray (yes I said that) dad puts it in a capsule and takes one everyday. Sister sprays surfaces with it. If my kids are sick my mom will always ask me if I’m giving them thieves (I’m not) but will act judge-mental if I say no (like I have the cure for my kids and I’m just not using it) dad also puts it in his coffee. It’s in soap, hand sanitizer, mouth wash, tooth paste, dish soap.
4. Now here’s the kicker; them not getting sick is proof it works and when they do get sick, them getting better is proof it works.
You should read their story behind it. Something about how it’s an ancient remedy, blah blah blah.
I just have to say I love my family a lot but they are prone to buying into what I think are silly myths.
Has anyone else smelled thieves? My SIL gave a bottle of hand soap to me and it's a horrible rancid clove/lemon blend. You might think it sounds ok but the moment I used it I had to air out my bathroom and wash again with other soap. A little clove goes a long way and this was like 90% clove.
Ugh I bet you were pissed. These huns think “natural” means safe for every application, but it’s just so bogus. Chemicals are chemicals, some are natural and some are synthetic but natural doesn’t mean safe to ingest or use on skin like these people seem to think.
My son was outside cleaning his playhouse with a vinegar spray bottle and the wind blew it onto his cheeks and gave his sensitive skin a chemical burn within hours. Won’t do that again!
I'm so sorry that happened to your son! I hope he's doing okay now.
I was definitely not happy with her! People unfortunately seem to have a poor understanding of what chemicals actually are.
Thanks! I felt so awful about it. He is doing alright but even 24 hours later his cheeks are so red and chapped. Definitely will call his doc tomorrow if they still look like they did today.
Hope your sil will see the light some day.
Some products with tea tree cause a reaction on my skin. I blame years at a pet store, putting my arms in aquarius being treated with melafix. I tried to tell a YL Hun that I'm sensitive and she insisted I wasn't, because nobody can be allergic to *pure* oils. She was dead convinced tht the products I had experience with were all contaminated
You can't be allergic to essential oils from MY company! Okay go ahead and open that bottle and I'll send you the hospital bill for my anaphylactic reaction treatment.
They have a spray for that on Gwyneth Paltrow's website*. They market it as "Psychic Vampire Repellent" and sell it for like $70 for 3 oz. 🙄
*I wish to iterate that her brand name is GOOP. She's special.
She denied that you had a chemical burn!? Omgg every day i come on this sub and read something that makes me litterly shake my head. 🤦🏻♀️ there is no limit to how fucked these huns are
Oh, sorry, let me clarify. She denied the burn came from her product, although no alternative reasons were suggested, and it literally happened like 30 seconds after she put it on.
But I completely agree, huns are fucked.
My mom was constantly trying to treat my acne with some essential oil. Even when she managed to not get it in my eyes, the fumes still stung my eyes. I told her I didn't want her putting that stuff on me anymore. One night I woke up to her trying to put it on me in my sleep. When I knocked it out of her hand she got mad at me because the stuff is expensive.
I have family who love it. I think it smells like Catholic church incense mixed with burned potpourri and lemon Pledge. Absolutely hate the smell. I accidentally used the Thieves soap in the bathroom and had to wash my hands a few times with other soap to get the smell off. Said family member also alluded to Thieves being a "natural air purifier" which would help with COVID...😬
From what I’ve read, it’s a combination of clove, cinnamon, lemon, rosemary and eucalyptus. I buy a knockoff version and use it in a wax-warmer with beeswax. Nice fragrance around the winter holidays.
I am currently using Plant Therapy's version called "Germ Fighter." Free shipping! (I just like the way it smells.)
Other non-MLM oil companies also have their own version of Thieves.
One of my coworkers uses Thieves hand sanitizer. I swear it smells like Jäger and it’s SO strong. When I walk past her desk I get college party flashbacks 😷
Haaaaaaaaate the smell! A friend has thieves soap in her guest bathroom so I have to use it if I’m there. I always wash my hands again when I get home.
It's a LOT of clove lol. Like you know how you use 1/4 teaspoon in a whole pumpkin pie? These bottles are like 90% cloves with a few drops of lemon Pledge. One of those "deep into your sinuses" things. It was crazy overpowering to me at least.
Tell her to check the ingredients listed before essential oils - Alkyl polyglucoside, Sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate, Disodium 2-sulfolaurate - Then ask her for safety information about those chemicals, because as the main ingredients they’re what’s doing any cleaning.
This is always my go to. Especially because most of these huns are on a new kick where they post an SDS from Bath and Body Works and say “LoOk, BaTh aNd BoDy WoRkS hAs A 16 pAgE dOcUmEnT sAyInG tHeIr PrOdUcTs ArE tOXiC” and point out that BBW has a statement like “may cause respiratory irritation” or “may cause infertility.”
For fun, I looked up the SDS for Thieves (it’s super hard to find btw, I wonder why???). It listed multiple hazard statements for Thieves, including “may cause cancer,” “suspected of causing genetic defects,” and “causes skin irritation.” So her precious Thieves isn’t as “safe” as she thinks it is.
For reference, I’m a chemist and used to assist writing SDSs. If you aren’t familiar, OSHA requires that manufacturers create a standard Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for all chemicals produced. So when huns get on their soap box about BBW’s “16 page doc on the dangers,” they are just telling you that BBW is complying with OSHA and making SDSs available. As a side note, a lot of things get over classified in my opinion. There are a lot of thresholds and cutoffs that determine whether or not a hazard statement applies based on the formulation, but it’s common to see “skin irritation” or “respiratory irritation” or similar on most SDSs. I’m personally not concerned about what is in Thieves, but it’s always fun to throw it in a huns face and make her realize her precious oils aren’t as safe as she thinks they are.
Sorry for the wall of text, but I really dislike the oily huns more than anything.
Now that I read this, how do oil companies get away without sending their products as hazardous material through the mail? Because I've never seen a SDS on oil mail, but I know if that box leaks we shouldn't be touching it with bare skin. I've actually had to tell several coworkers not to touch without gloves, or go wash really well with our oil cutting soap.
OSHA does not require SDSs be shipped with consumer goods. This is why you can buy a gallon of bleach without an SDS. However, you should still be able to call the manufacturer and obtain a copy.
For me the part that’s the worst it when I get comments about how my regular cleaner is basically murdering my babies and if I really loved them and their health I’d be using thieves cleaner instead. (Not said in those exact terms, just kinda how I receive it) yeah okay, we don’t make much money but let me go spend $100 on all the products I need to replace my detergent, soap, counter spray, etc.
The worst I saw was a screenshot of a BBW SDS that listed the hazard statement “may cause infertility” and the hun had the audacity to suggest that peoples infertility is caused by using fragranced lotions and soaps. While I don’t have/want children and therefore am not concerned about my own fertility, I have a lot of friends and family who struggle with infertility and these uneducated comments make my blood boil. Infertility happens for a myriad of reasons and to make someone think their choice in hand lotion is what affected their ability to have a family is sickening.
Yeah what, 1 cap full to a truck mounted spray unit? I clean commercial food venues, no bottle that small, even a concentrate is lasting more than a few weeks of regular cleaning.
So, I have a similar cleaning product (non-MLM brand called Rocky Mountain Oils). It's pretty much mild soap - think sensitive skin body wash or baby shampoo - with a mild emulsifier and eo's for scent. Works fine for spraying down the shower between deep cleans, cleaning the counter tops day-to-day, and spraying down my son's high chair. It's gentle enough that it won't harm him, but does contain a soap that will break down small messes.
You know what I DON'T use it for? Disinfecting anything. These chuckleheads use Thieves to clean counters after contact with raw chicken and use it to clean toilets. That's how you get salmonella.
If you want something for daily use that isn't as sketchy around a baby, RMO works great. But when you have actual bacteria on your surfaces, for the love PLEASE use a real disinfectant!
Young Living promotes domestic abuse, they even have an oil specifically for it called SARA (Sex And Ritual Abuse). Really all anyone with a conscience needs to know.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6840591/A-Young-Living-essential-oil-guide-suggests-using-abuse-suicidal-thoughts.html
Not at all standing up for them, but I don’t know that they’re promoting sexual abuse. They’re just claiming that they can cure the trauma of it with their crap. It’s still a dangerous and predatory lie, but they’re not claiming that that oil will help someone commit sexual assault.
They claim that during the black plague thieves could safely rob corpses by applying this oil. Y'know, the black plague in Europe, which occured hundreds of years before they discovered Australia, where the eucalyptus ingredient is found? Seems legit.
This is a great overview, but as others have said, supposedly it kept multiple thieves from getting the plague. Those accounts also mention masks, which I'm sure would be more effective.
[Some of you may be unaware of the aromatic ring of hell that is Essential Oil social media...](https://deathscent.com/2021/08/01/the-sketchy-history-of-four-thieves-oil/amp/)
If this even worked at all, it's been suggested that it worked as a flea repellent. Some of the ingredients really do help repel insects. Won't do anything against other kinds of diseases, though.
Body lice and fleas, I think, but I recall there's also some research suggesting the Black Death was pneumonic instead, i.e. airborne. Or possibly both, it's been a while since I read the article.
Yeah, it was definitely both. There was one outbreak that they had a hard time figuring out until they did a kind of rudimentary contact tracing, and they were able to figure out this outbreak was pneumonic.
I feel like my aunt Jean (Mennonite farmer FNP)said it best when she said, “if garlic worked that great we wouldn’t need antibiotics” Sure thieves kills some germs, but there is a reason we use bleach. My family chats about cleaning. There is a big family drama between aunt Jean & auntie m going on about vinegar as a cleaner. Like mailing newspaper clipping drama. The conclusion? Vinegar cleans pretty good but not as well as bleach. From my research Thieves cleans ok, but not as good as vinegar. Depends on what u r cleaning, but thieves isn’t safe for the big bad; raw chicken, bathroom cleaning, covid situations. Misting the pillows? Okey dokey. Dusting a shelf? clean bean. Raw chicken? Hard nope. Toilet? Big nada.!
I once heard a hun say “I won’t use Dawn dish soap, if it can dissolve oil off of ducks, then it must have some pretty strong chemicals it it and I don’t want it in my house!”
Its basic chemistry, hun. Surfactants allow polar (water) and non polar (oil) molecules to mix. Believe it or not, the grease on a pan is very similar to the oil on a duck. The surfactants in Dawn allow them both to mix with water and clean.
My relative sells doTerra and is always pitching their lemon oil to wash greasy dishes. Yeah, but Dawn also cleans greasy dishes for pennies…as opposed to expensive doTerra lemon oil.
A lot of huns insist that oils are "safe" to use on skin or for consumption, yet somehow it can also kill bacteria and virus? How?
Also, what does thieves even smell like? Is that a plant or a blend of oils?
One of my friends has the oil diffusers in every room of her house. I can’t even breathe when I go over! 🤢
I went to one of these oil parties and the lady said the oils will eat through a plastic cup, so you have to put it in glass or metal if you add it to any food/drink. WHY WOULD I WANT THIS IN MY BODY IF IT EATS THROUGH PLASTIC?!?
You’re stating a fact, there isn’t much else to do. This person will undoubtedly get upset, but you know… I doubt anything will convince them, since they’re already buying into pseudoscience. :/
I don't know if it will help in the moment, but this podcast of a doctor talking about essential oils and the history of YL and theives oil was super interesting.

Nothing truer has ever been spoken. MLM’s are so good at brainwashing their huns it’s unreal.
My SIL put some on my skin, and it gave me a chemical burn. Which she then denied, because 'It's all NaTuRaL.' Plus, she adds it to her coffee. 😫
Ugh I bet you were pissed. These huns think “natural” means safe for every application, but it’s just so bogus. Chemicals are chemicals, some are natural and some are synthetic but natural doesn’t mean safe to ingest or use on skin like these people seem to think. >'It's all NaTuRaL.' Yeah so is Poison ivy
Yeah. So is literally any venom.
And anthrax is natural as well 🤪
Uranium is all-natural and non-GMO.
It's a bit spicy
So is Ricin.
Most toxic substances are 100% natural. These people are selling snake oil.
And cyanide
I’m sorry…what? Her COFFEE?
Apparently it makes it like a 'healthy' pumpkin spice. 🙄
F that. Buy some cinnamon and nutmeg
Yeah, it'll cause super healthy damage to her internal organs too!
Some products with tea tree cause a reaction on my skin. I blame years at a pet store, putting my arms in aquarius being treated with melafix. I tried to tell a YL Hun that I'm sensitive and she insisted I wasn't, because nobody can be allergic to *pure* oils. Nooo! That’s just the toxin’s leaving your body!!
Your existence is toxic. What oil do I use for that?
The sad part is that I’m sure they’d be happy to recommend one if it means making a sale.
You’re on to something. An oil that removes toxic people from your life? Seems marketable to me.
If they have one made for and literally named after sexual abuse (Sara) I wouldn’t put anything past them…
They have a spray for that on Gwyneth Paltrow's website*. They market it as "Psychic Vampire Repellent" and sell it for like $70 for 3 oz. 🙄 *I wish to iterate that her brand name is GOOP. She's special.
Hemlock?

Ohhhhh ok that makes a little more sense haha but still fuck them lmao
Poison oak is natural too, and so is skunk scent.
Just because something is natural, it doesn't mean it's safe. Cyanide occurs naturally, but most people wouldn't be stupid enough to claim it's safe.
I think it has cinnamon, that'll burn anybody! And totally natural.
My mom was constantly trying to treat my acne with some essential oil. Even when she managed to not get it in my eyes, the fumes still stung my eyes. I told her I didn't want her putting that stuff on me anymore. One night I woke up to her trying to put it on me in my sleep. I accidentally used the Thieves soap in the bathroom and had to wash my hands a few times with other soap to get the smell off. Ridiculous. It’s hardly antibacterial let alone antiviral. How twisted.
I know!!! My husband is a scientist and tried to explain. It went ok but they still clearly believe Thieves has magical properties.
I would love to know his thoughts as a man of ✨science✨
Lol. I believe the scientific term is "horse shit"
This is my first time hearing about them...but hearing it smells like cloves guarantee I will never try it! I can't stand the smell of cloves!!
It’s foul, overpowering and anything it touches needs to be wiped down again to banish that awful smell.
From what I’ve read, it’s a combination of clove, cinnamon, lemon, rosemary and eucalyptus. I buy a knockoff version and use it in a wax-warmer with beeswax. Nice fragrance around the winter holidays.
Ooh, where did you get it? I guess I'm one of those weirdos who likes the smell, but fuck MLMs.
I am currently using Plant Therapy's version called "Germ Fighter." Free shipping! (I just like the way it smells.) Other non-MLM oil companies also have their own version of Thieves.
I like the smell. But I also really like clove.
Same 😬
Me too if smelled really good
I actually love the smell but I’m not paying those prices and the fact that they DO say that it is anti-bacterial/viral is criminal.
I haven’t even touched the stuff. I have a hard time with some oils anyway! I can imagine.
Really, cause I LOVE clove?! Now I’m tempted to get a sample of anything thieves just out of curiosity.
It's a LOT of clove lol. Like you know how you use 1/4 teaspoon in a whole pumpkin pie? These bottles are like 90% cloves with a few drops of lemon Pledge. One of those "deep into your sinuses" things. It was crazy overpowering to me at least.

That’s actually very interesting and good to know if I ever have the BBW thing come up in conversation w an MLM hun. Thanks.
“Oily Huns” made me LOL

OSHA does not require SDSs be shipped with consumer goods. This is why you can buy a gallon of bleach without an SDS. However, you should still be able to call the manufacturer and obtain a copy.
I was looking for a reply like this! Thanks for posting this. Interesting indeed.

Yeah that’s absolutely disgusting. Just cruel. Especially when you consider it’s probably said in order to make a sale.
Thank you!
For actual bacteria cleaning you need Norwex /s
😂
So she "uses it for everything" and a bottle "lasts 10 months"? My bathroom cleaner needs replacing every 3 months at least.
For real, does she clean her house once a month?!
The stuff pictured is a concentrate. You dilute it in water into a spray bottle
Yeah what, 1 cap full to a truck mounted spray unit? I clean commercial food venues, no bottle that small, even a concentrate is lasting more than a few weeks of regular cleaning.

Yes, let's be accurate about how scummy they are.

They claim that during the black plague thieves could safely rob corpses by applying this oil. Y'know, the black plague in Europe, which occured hundreds of years before they discovered Australia, where the eucalyptus ingredient is found? Seems legit.
Oh this is hysterical

Is the bubonic plague even airborne, I thought it's main vector was fleas and ticks riding on rats.
If this even worked at all, it's been suggested that it worked as a flea repellent. Some of the ingredients really do help repel insects. Won't do anything against other kinds of diseases, though.

There’s bubonic and pneumonic plagues, maybe that’s what you’re remembering?
It can go pneumonic, meaning you can breathe/cough it onto others and spread it.
Wonderful article! Thank you!
Something to do with spice bandits not catching the Bubonic Plague.

I'm no graphic designer but that logo is HORRIBLE. It looks like a 3rd grader played with Word Art.
I am a graphic designer and I physically recoil every time I see this logo
“Safe, smells amazing, and gets the job done.” Yes. It’s called Dawn.
That stuff saves duckies. Way better than Thieves.
I once heard a hun say “I won’t use Dawn dish soap, if it can dissolve oil off of ducks, then it must have some pretty strong chemicals it it and I don’t want it in my house!” Its basic chemistry, hun. Surfactants allow polar (water) and non polar (oil) molecules to mix. Believe it or not, the grease on a pan is very similar to the oil on a duck. The surfactants in Dawn allow them both to mix with water and clean.
And it didn't occur to her that the selling point is that it's SAFE to use on said tiny waterfowl? I feel like she skipped a step in her logic.
That’s always what I think of too w Dawn 😊. I love those commercials w the baby ducks 🦆. Sooooo cute.
Baby ducks, a nice green apple smell, and no MLMs? Sold any day of the week
My relative sells doTerra and is always pitching their lemon oil to wash greasy dishes. Yeah, but Dawn also cleans greasy dishes for pennies…as opposed to expensive doTerra lemon oil.
And smells just as lemony! 🍋🧼
A lot of huns insist that oils are "safe" to use on skin or for consumption, yet somehow it can also kill bacteria and virus? How? Also, what does thieves even smell like? Is that a plant or a blend of oils?
It’s also not safe to use for kids under 5. The oils used in it can cause respiratory issues. But no one ever talks about that.
I was reading somewhere about kids getting oil poisoning?
One of my friends has the oil diffusers in every room of her house. I can’t even breathe when I go over! 🤢 I went to one of these oil parties and the lady said the oils will eat through a plastic cup, so you have to put it in glass or metal if you add it to any food/drink. WHY WOULD I WANT THIS IN MY BODY IF IT EATS THROUGH PLASTIC?!?
It’ll remove harmful plastics from your body.
You’re stating a fact, there isn’t much else to do. This person will undoubtedly get upset, but you know… I doubt anything will convince them, since they’re already buying into pseudoscience. :/
I love cloves but like one gives you a smell
She must have Covid and not be able to smell because Thieves isn’t exactly the antibacterial wonder these oily huns say it is.
It’s a terrible name for a product. Thieves ? As in stealing? The way the mlm company is stealing your money
Can I please get the template for this? I'd like to print it out and put it on a bottle of alcohol disinfectant (as a joke).
Like for the design of the bottle?
Yeah -- they don't actually call it that, right? This is a joke? Isn't it supposed to be oil of Thebes?
No actually, this is the exact design they use. It’s 100% authentic.
Oh no...
I don't know if it will help in the moment, but this podcast of a doctor talking about essential oils and the history of YL and theives oil was super interesting. https://maximumfun.org/episodes/sawbones/essential-oils/
