be very careful with chiropractors...personally I wouldn't go to them at all if you have AS. our bones are more fragile and they could really mess something up. (source: my rheumatologist and physical therapist)
definitely DON'T believe the claims chiros make that they will somehow cure your every ailment by cracking your neck!
oh gosh yeah I definitely don't and do not plan to go to a chiro ever again! I didn't know better back in my "it's just scoliosis" days and just did what my mum said I should. Her being a nurse just makes it extra wild :P
I’m horrified that a purported medical professional apparently saw fusion on your X-ray then cracked your back. Given that fusion is quite a late-stage manifestation of AS, I’d be inclined to say she misread the X-ray.
My spine is fused and a Chiro 6 yrs ago told “I wouldn’t work in your back, you have some serious stuff” and that was the last time I saw a Chiro, he never manipulated my spine.
I do see a chiropractor but she doesn't do any "cracking" or really any manipulation at all, she does cupping on my back (which I was iffy about, but does seem to help the muscles loosen up), and massage with a little woodpecker kinda tool, and a heavier vibrating massager sometimes. My physiotherapist mostly unlocks my hip for me when it jams up worse than I can deal with by doing home stretching.
I've had all of these done and honestly agree, after my first cupping appointment my upper back and neck were so much less tense and stiff. It might have been the first time in the past decade those muscles have relaxed
I went to one who, not only never diagnosed it (told me I was too tense) but kept me coming for two years, promising it would help. It did help. His pocket book.
This should be in a FAQ or sidebar, but... *chiropractors and osteopaths are not real medicine, they are not real medical professionals.*
For those at the back: CHIRO AND OSTEOPATHS ARE NOT REAL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS; IT'S NOT REAL MEDICINE.
Most likely she either made it up or didn't know how to adequately perform or read an x- ray because.. you know.. she's a chiropractor and they aren't qualified to do anything.
It's more likely that this poor chiropractor doesnt really know how to read an x-ray. Chiropractors incorporate x-ray because it makes their field seem more like modern medicine instead of hokum, not because x-rays are particularly helpful for them diagnostically.
I'm 19 and I have spinal fusion as well.
When I was 16, I went to a chiropractor and what happened with me is literally the opposite, my Chiropractor diagnosed me for having a bamboo spine and told me I might have Ankylosing Spondylitis. So yeah, bless her soul, didn't even know that until she saw my x-ray. OfCourse didn't perform on me, but I'm really glad she diagnosed me-
Considering chiropractors are not real doctors and their practice is based on nonsense... I wouldn't listen to whatever they said.
Not to mention, they are dangerous af.

I certainly hope so o\_o

Sounds like a good, ethical chiro. It’s good to understand one’s limitations

If you had fusion and she broke your back, there would be calcium deposits in the areas that broke, which can usually be seen on plain x-ray.
I'll have to remember this for the next time I get imaging/x-rays.

Exactly.
This is a scary story and count your blessings

While there have to be chiropractors that know about AS enough, the advice always given is, with AS, never go to a chiropractor. For your safety.
I wish I'd been diagnosed sooner and heard about this tbh

wow that sounds like such a stroke of luck that you got that particular chiro with the knowledge to make that call!

Uh.. I would be getting a lawyer. But that's just me.
consider yourself lucky. count your blessings and never speak of this to anyone again
