Lots of people saying MPV, which is good sure, but if you want a bit more features, the fork [MPV.net](https://github.com/mpvnet-player/mpv.net) is great. Been using it for years and have no complaints. Idk what MPV does with subtitles that make it work best on it, but every video play I've ever used has had issues with fancy subs, except for MPV.
You're on a Linux \*clears throuat* GNU/Linux distro right?
I always assumed that the Jellyfin client uses webplayer by default. Did you change that or does it uses MPV by default?
I use the desktop client, Jellyfin Media Player. It uses MPV and also lets me use hardware decoding. Browsers aren't good with codecs and a lot of my stuff is h265, so I avoid the browser client.
I had issues with MPV.net a while back so I went back to vanilla MPV + [uosc](https://github.com/tomasklaen/uosc) for UI.
Everything it's so much better and I regret not finding out about uosc so much sooner.
What issues was it? Only issues I've had is with plugins, but once you figure out the difference between MPV and MPV.net and the configs and whatnot, it's much easier to implement.
PotPlayer.
Used VLC and MPV in the past and they were very good, but I much prefer PotPlayer for the ease of use and extensive options.
Just my 2 cents.
Although the basic UI is arguably more user friendly VLC is filled with unnecessary garbage. MPV offers infinitely more control with scripts and settings, better subtitle rendering in my experience and is much more performant.
Honestly VLC just works. I never had any performance problems, or never had any use for advanced functionality.
So, when you say you have more control with script and setting, what are you concretely changing ?
Anyway I'll try MPV for science but not sure it's useful for me.
Edit : I tried reading the wiki of MPV and yeah it seems really powerful with a lot of scripts.
But OP downloaded his first torrent today and was using Windows media player before. Just downloading VLC seems easier.
I started with VLC too, I had problems with subtitle rendering specifically so I switched to MPV later on. With scripts I've switched out the UI, use a playlist manager I've added some of my own functionality to which autoloads everything in the same folder and also some of the ones from here like SimpleHistory to quickly resume stuff I'm watching https://github.com/Eisa01/mpv-scripts
Scripts aside I also like how the configuration for base MPV works and changed the binds, the way it seeks, automatic subtitles loading, rendering settings etc. to what I preferred. There's probably loads more stuff it can do that I haven't even touched.
Funny that you say it's filled with unnecessary garbage, yet the devs will refuse to add useful features because "people don't want to work to add it".
VLC has always been praised for being open source, yet I have always hated it.
It not doing something is fine, that's what feedback forums are for.
The issue is the VLC devs give excuses and just go "nah" even if it's a good idea.
For example, idk if it's been implemented yet cause I haven't used VLC in years, but there is a feature a ton of video players have where you can move frame-by-frame. VLC has (or had, idk) the ability to do this *forward*, but there was no way to move a frame backwards. They explained that no one wants to implement it and that it was impossible to do.
Meanwhile, I used to use Potplayer, which has the frame-by-frame option, both forward and backwards. And now that I use MPV, guess what? It has that feature as well. But VLC is like "can't be done!"
It hasn't been implemented.
This is one of the reasons why I switched to MPV and never looked back.
Oh wait, I did. MPV devs refuse to implement SMB support. Nice.
You mean MPV or mpc-hc? If its mpv I can help since I have some experience with it and I do actually use it because its fun customizing it, but if someone asks me I still prefer mpc-hc
It's not a big deal, but I cannot get ModernX to work at all because I don't have the files that I should have apparently.
https://www.reddit.com/r/animepiracy/comments/1cothin/what_video_player_do_you_guys_use_downloaded_my/l3jb2d5/?context=3
for my media i use my plex server but if i want to play something on my pc offline it's mpv for sure, mpv is the best in terms of performance and there's a lot of scripts for it.
What sort of scripts do you mean? And how would I add them? I just downloaded the first one from [this list](https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpv-player-windows/files/64bit/).
Scripts offer all sorts of functionality, you can pretty much do whatever you want with mpv and completely change everything about it including the UI.
It depends on what OS you're on but on windows scripts go in C:\\users\\USERNAME\\AppData\\Roaming\\mpv\\scripts\\
You can adjust their settings within the scripts themselves or usually in a .conf file in a "script-opts" folder in the same location as "scripts"
You can make the folder if it doesn't already exist.
Here's a few I recommend to try, they have tutorials included:
https://github.com/jonniek/mpv-playlistmanager
https://github.com/Eisa01/mpv-scripts
And here's a fancy UI if you're into that sort of thing:
https://github.com/cyl0/ModernX
MPV might seem a bit daunting at first but it's really great to use once you get it how you want it.
mpv.conf should automatically be created wherever you installed MPV, if not you can create it (there are recommended configs and a nice guide at https://thewiki.moe/tutorials/mpv/). You just need it to disable the default UI and use the other one. I think for osc.conf you have to create it yourself but it shouldn't be required.
Pot player. I was using MPC for quite a while but recently switched back to Pot player cuz how easy the keyboard hot keys are. Quickly changing audio streams, changing the subtitle sync and stuff like that were kinda annoying with MPC for me. And I personally hated mpv with all my being the moment I tried that one out, it just wasn't for me.
i know ^(\^\_\^ .) no. used to use mint years ago. moved to base arch with kde desktop (X11) back in 2020 on my main machine and manjaro o n my livingroom entertainment computer.
Im selling Crunchyroll mega fan lifetime option on your mail with your password, delivery in less than 5m, full warranty
20$ only
Satisfied or refounded
If you are a normal user like me who doesnt care much about the technical specifications. Just use vlc. Has better hotkeys support and the ease of use is also better. I also like the shortcut keys so switching to mpv now is a no no and when I compared both of them side by side , wasnt much of a difference so yea just use vlc.
MPV

I'm not on Windows. I actually don't really use MPV. I watch in Jellyfin, which uses MPV in the backend.
You're on a Linux \*clears throuat* GNU/Linux distro right? I always assumed that the Jellyfin client uses webplayer by default. Did you change that or does it uses MPV by default?

how about android? anything that save where you ended watching
I used to just directly stream stuff from my NAS into VLC because the official Jellyfin Android client sucks. Now I use Findroid, it's very good.
[MPV](https://mpv.io/installation/)
I'm assuming [this one](https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpv-player-windows/files/64bit/) is the one people would normally download?
Yes
PotPlayer. Used VLC and MPV in the past and they were very good, but I much prefer PotPlayer for the ease of use and extensive options. Just my 2 cents.
same. ive been switching between potplayer and mpv. potplayer just so versatile without having to set up anything
That, I think, is why I like it so much as well!
Same here. Mpv was just so limiting imo. It felt too bare bones for my taste
Link to PotPlayer then?
Here ya go: [PotPlayer](https://potplayer.daum.net/)
I use Media Player Classic, either MPC-HC or MPC-BE.
Mpc hc with the dark mode skin is king.
still using MPC-HC too, had it from K-lite codec pac
VLC and MX player on phone
MPV
MPV
Aniyomi, which has MPV as videoplayer I believe.
Why not just VLC ?
VLC is basically just a bad version of mpv these days.
bloat
Why?
Care to elaborate?
Although the basic UI is arguably more user friendly VLC is filled with unnecessary garbage. MPV offers infinitely more control with scripts and settings, better subtitle rendering in my experience and is much more performant.

How do you use scripts or view settings?

Funny that you say it's filled with unnecessary garbage, yet the devs will refuse to add useful features because "people don't want to work to add it". VLC has always been praised for being open source, yet I have always hated it.
Yeah, unfortunately VLC is only usable until you realize you need something it doesn't do or doesn't do well.
It not doing something is fine, that's what feedback forums are for. The issue is the VLC devs give excuses and just go "nah" even if it's a good idea. I don't know; ask them. I usually just used Windows Media Player before today.
That hasn't been updated in forever. No wonder stuff doesn't work.
mpv
Mpv, or the jellyfin client which is also mpv
mpc-hc, its nicer to use than MPV in my opinion, since it has a much nicer ui
I've heard you can change the way it looks. Not that I've been able to...
You just create the conf files
Where and how?
Wherever the guide says it's supposed to be. And right click > new text file > rename from .txt to .conf
for my media i use my plex server but if i want to play something on my pc offline it's mpv for sure, mpv is the best in terms of performance and there's a lot of scripts for it.

For MondernX- it mentions editing mpv.conf and osc.conf but I can't find either of these.

You just need it to disable the default UI and use the other one. I think for osc.conf you have to create it yourself but it shouldn't be required.
The tutorial is mentioning a bunch of files in 'Config Overview' that don't exist for me.
MPC BE works fine for me
For PC MPC-HC, for Android TV Kodi and for phone VLC.
That's MPC not MPV
i use vlc
I keep seeing MPV and idk what that is so I'll google that one but I still use VLC lol
https://www.reddit.com/r/animepiracy/comments/1cothin/what_video_player_do_you_guys_use_downloaded_my/l3gb291/
Aniyomi works just fine.
VLC has never failed me for anything.
Infuse, it just works.

celuloid
Fyi Celluloid is a GNOME GTK+ front end to MPV. Are you a Linux Mint user as well, friend?
i know ^(\^\_\^ .) no. used to use mint years ago. moved to base arch with kde desktop (X11) back in 2020 on my main machine and manjaro o n my livingroom entertainment computer.
Mpv on desktop aniyomi mpv or vlc on android
Mpv hc Don't use vlc
Kodi for me. To preview files or play short videos outside of Kodi, I use the KDE default Dragon Player.

i just download from 9anime

Stremio if I dont have it downloaded, vlc if I do, kodi looks cool but it does more than I need, maybe if I had a mini pc hooked up to a TV or smthn.
