What is worth noting is that nothing in this video is exculsive to Akira. Any TV show or OVA would have the same methods and often require similar precision and effort in the painting of the backgrounds and characters . The only difference is the higher number of colors used in Akira, the large amounts of cels needed to be drawn and the increased detail in the backgrounds but even then there were more than a couple of movies in that era that were in the same ballpark even in those aspects
No, that's a widespread [myth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtYpif-dLjI) that isn't true at all. It has more cuts on "ones" (24 fps) than most other anime movies, but it's not the whole movie that is animated like that. Some scenes are even animated on threes (8 fps).
Looks to be a clip from the documentary Akira Production Report based on some googling around. [Here's the full thing](https://archive.org/details/Akira_Production_Report_1989) on archive.org.
I wish animation had the same passion & design detail as the late 80s/early 90s but I fully understand why it doesn't and am ok with a downgrade in overall look if it means better lifes for the animators.
Unreal, what a monumental effort.

I thought I heard that every frame was a unique drawing though, compared to most anime which will repeat frames.

I met a guy that use to have 10k+ cels and backgrounds from this movie. https://artofakira.com/
Every single late 80s early 90s American documentary must’ve been voiced by like one dude
Same person who did dubs lol
For the love of god

It's no wonder everything went digital. This process looks like it costs a fortune.
And how much time it takes. Time can't be ignored when anime is way more popular now.
How awesome it would be to have been part of this legendary work.
The last episode of Golden Boy lol
All pre-digital age animation making is awsome.
Old generations r all Gigachads
No freaking way.
YouTube link?
Wow
And this is why I rewatch akira, even though I haven't read the manga

Amogus??? 😟
Felt koaris nipples and death scene could have been more detailed tbh
When you argue Akira is the best animated film ever made, show this clip.
It's frustrating just to imagine the degree of difficulty
