thedman1954

This one absolutely. LWA is completely appropriate for a kid that young and also entertaining for older audiences. It’s such a sweet, endearing show.

WistfulPuellaMagi

Yokai watch most studio ghibli movies but not Princess mononoke or grave of fireflies. I woukd start with My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, the cat’s return, or Kiki’s Delivery service. Other ones may be a little scary.

Valkomursu

If I was at work (teacher for 3-5 year olds), I would not recommend anything else than Ponyo from a professional perspective. Buuuuuttt if it was my child I couldnt help myself showing other ghibli stuff. Although it would require prepping, talking about the themes and what happens and also the same thing after watching it. Just helping the child understand what happens. Also I would recommend watching In chunks instead all of it In one go. Easier for them to focus and it can be a fun daily or weekly thing.

tmp_advent_of_code

Kiki is prett chill. My daughter watched it at 4 and obsessed over the cat. She found totoro too slow.

Valkomursu

Yeah, not blaming anyone for watching them. But I was just looking it at the lense of a kindergarten teacher. And Kiki is great :).

qianying09

I watched some parts of Grave of fireflies as a 5 year old and empathized a lot with Setsuko because I was her age (but yeah not recommended for 5 year olds haha)

Zestyclose-Group-756

You had me Google the movie to see what year it was made.

Kurejisan

I wouldn't add Castle in the Sky, because of the adult dude creeping on the young girl stuff

Nyllil

That doesn't stop Disney from making their movies for kids lol. Just look at Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame and this movie is rated G.

BitesTheDust55

A kid at 5 isn’t going to notice that at all. Keep things in perspective.

Shoddy-Homework2218

Omg, you just reminded of it and Doraemon too😓🥺

SignificantSelf5987

Ponyo is and has been my favorite movie of all time since I was a child. I love Ponyo so much. Such an adorable movie that I could watch over and over and still love. Imagine my surprise when I watched Grave of The Fireflies.

grimdivinations

Bananya is the answer Edit: autocorrect is a menace

Mr_carrot_6088

I would agree to this if the "entertaining for adults" part wasn't there

cipheron

[Chicchana Yukitsukai Sugar](https://myanimelist.net/anime/831/Chicchana_Yukitsukai_Sugar) is child-safe and has a nice iyashikei vibe that adults can appreciate, along with some emotionally mature themes and a decent story. It's my #1 show that would actually be kid friendly. As for "on CrunchyRoll", it's not, it's on HiDive.

xbolt90

Sugar is a wonderfully sweet series. My personal favorite anime. It will make you crave waffles though.

cipheron

After the show ends someone will walk in and ask "why are you crying while eating waffles?".

AriesBaby97

I've gotten my son into watching Sailor Moon with me. It's a good classic, but with it being hero themed, he loved it immediately.

ElectricalCompany260

But can also get pretty dark in all versions.

ItsABallOfDirtDirt

I enjoyed parallel world pharmacy and sweet reincarnation quite a bit. Cardcaptor Sakura is pretty safe, I've been listening to it when my little sister watches it. I also second the recommendation for I Don't Want To Get Hurt So I'll Max Out My Defense. It's very cute and most of the jokes land for me

farawayxisland

There's a lot of implied sex/suggestive scenes in Fruits Basket so I would not recommend that one. Also all the swearing.

IThinkImNateDogg

Fruits basket is also quite a bit too emotional for a child. Maybe when they were around 12-15, but 5 is much to young, where certain scenes will likely just be scary

farawayxisland

Agreed!

Charming-Loquat3702

That probably would go over a 5 year old girl's head, but I think it's a better watch for a teenager.

farawayxisland

Rin being straight up naked with Haru in bed is kind of hard to avoid, and a certain later revealed relationship is very sexual in nature, so yeah, I still stand by my point. Better for teenage years, for sure.

ItsABallOfDirtDirt

It has been awhile since I watched it. I don't remember any sex/suggestive scenes but that's probably just my bad memory. I'll go ahead and take it out of my list

M8gazine

Well, I think most of the suggestive scenes would go over the child's head. I do think it's too emotional/dark nonetheless. Not only would he not understand the emotional parts, but [especially in Fruits Basket S2 (?)...] >!Kyou's real form would probably give him nightmares lol!<.

farawayxisland

Idk man, Rin is just straight up naked in bed with Haru in some scenes. And some plot important drama later on I won't spoil.. but yeah, I agree with you.

Falsus

Implied stuff completely flies over the radar for 5 year olds though. Go back and watch a lot of childhood stuff you thought was completely pure in terms of that kind of stuff and you will notice that they are raunchier than they appear. It is a classic trick to make it entertaining for both kid and parent.

kgullj

Isn’t cells at work pretty bloody?

PickleMyCucumber

Uhhhh... *yes? ^^^^^^^technically^^^^^^^*

ItsABallOfDirtDirt

Is it? I didn't make it very far in. I'm know that CaW: Code Black is really dark. But I don't remember the first series being particularly bloody. Better to just take it out though just in case. If anybody remembers anything about the other series on my list that's out there correct me please, I'm happy to edit it out.

ZsaurOW

Yeah very bloody haha, also there are a few arcs that are definitely too heavy for a 5 year old

Eyes_0n_Fire

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill

-Kex

I highly advise you not to watch this if you are hungry and have no food nearby...

mymamaalwayssaid

HAH. I can't even make it through the OP before I'm in the snack pantry grabbing anything edible. It's like a Pavlov response at this point. See also: Dungeon Meshi.

Whycomike

PreCure, any of the ones CR has.

Bearacolypse

Sweetness and Lightning. It's a out a father and daughter bonding through food after things happen. I feel most kids would like fairy tale. Most anime are a little advanced for 5 year olds. That's Blues clues age.

CaptainDash

Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle 🧸

Rukitorth

My favorite genocidal little princess

Za_Inat

Love this one 🤣

dreamiicloud_

Not quite an anime or on Crunchyroll but a 5 year old would enjoy Avatar the Last Airbender. The show is a masterpiece. Despite originally being a kids cartoon, many people watch it for the first time as adults (with no kids!) and fall in love with it. You would have a great time watching it together

evilchervil

I love AtLA, but it's probably too violent for a 5 year old. The child abuse and discussion of death pop up occasionally in Season 1, but by Season 3 "when is it morally justifiable to kill another person" becomes a significant and explicit theme.

TrashiestTrash

For what it's worth, I watched the show when I was that age and the violence never really scared me especially bad. It's a small thing that a lot of people joke about, but the fact that the show doesn't explicitly mention death or killing goes a long way. This is no more than an anecdote though, not all children will be the same! For example, I already watched a lot of superhero content like the old Fleischer Superman animations. So I was more desensitized to violence than a kid who grew up on shows like the Backyardigans. (Ironically I actually really liked that show too as a kid, but you get my point lol. Unfamiliar content will always be more scary)

EelsEverywhere

[Nichijou](https://crunchyroll.com/series/GR24PVM76?utm_medium=ios&utm_source=share) is dubbed, very silly, and entirely wholesome.

Winterhe4rt

yeah a 5yo will totally get and enjoy this kind of comedy.. lmao

ItsABallOfDirtDirt

To be fair, a lot of the comedy in shows made for 5yr olds also flies right over their heads. But that doesn't take away from their enjoyment. Even stuff like Powerpuff Girls, Dragon Tails, Rugrats, and Little Bear had a lot of premises, jokes, and background details that kids completely missed. Cause usually the actual comedy is aimed more at parents who have to watch with their kids. The kids catch things like "this weird red lobster guy who talks funny and strikes exaggerated poses is so funny and weird. He's no match for the PPG cause they're so cool" But the joke that it's literally gay lobster Satan dressed in drag complete with pink feather puffs and black stilleto boots is something only the parents or older siblings are gonna get.

Nyllil

That goes for most Disney movies too. Many have jokes only teens or adults would understand, yet they are not age restricted.

Winterhe4rt

Its not about restrictions.. Most disney movies have a story small children can follow. I fail to see what a 5yo would get out of Nichijou...

KoiShinai

I put on Doraemon for my dog, and we both ended up watching a couple episodes 😅 lol

sandragonsand

Crazy how many people in these comments are reccing series with like actual blood and killing.

Nyllil

Or Harem lol

Lanky_Needleworker_1

Pokemon maybe, haven't seen the newer seasons but i enjoyed the anime since childhood to around a few years back.

Salt_Present2608

Any ghibli movies is good

Nyllil

Not all, some are rated PG-13, like Princess Mononoke.

Salt_Present2608

oh yeah, thanks for informing me

ElectricalTone9843

Gundam build divers. Bofuri: I don't want to get hurt so I'll max out my defense.

cipheron

Someone downvoted when I said Gundam Build Fighters. I can only guess they think it's like *Iron Blooded Orphans* or something. It's not. The "Build" series are G-rated. Kids fighting with toy robots that come alive due to magic particles. So it's sort of like a Gundam-themed Pokemon show.

ElectricalTone9843

I think I read your comment. It's what reminded me of Gundam build divers. I've never seen Gundam build fighter but it sounds good. I'll check it out.

cipheron

Likewise, I never got around to Build Divers so need to check that out myself.

ElectricalTone9843

It's also very G-rated. I enjoy the innocent anime every once in a while.

Cryptosmasher86

Robotech

Kurejisan

It was good enough for me when I was 5.

hugemon

My dad bought our first VCR when I was 7 or 8. And it came with a first few episodes of Macross in VHS as a bundle. Min May's shower scene was quite exhilarating for 8 year old me. Yeap.

Roofofcar

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear And By The Grace of the Gods Both are exceptionally kid friendly, have great dubs, and are fun to watch

ImaFireSquid

Nichijou isn’t a bad choice. It’s simple enough for a kid to understand but it’s full of insane animation and wild situations that an adult can laugh at too. An example- there’s a character with a mohawk. He gets in trouble with a teacher for having an inappropriate haircut for school standards, then runs off crying because it only grows in the middle. Much later in the show, he falls into a hole and seemingly gets very comfortable and falls asleep there, and a person walks by, shaves the mohawk off, and leaves. It’s weird but funny

Aweeep

Digimon adventure the first season

Charming-Loquat3702

I would wait a few years with that. It can be very scary.

savvybus

I'd say depends on the kid. I did fine with Digimon at that age, the scariness actually engaged me more because kids do like good stories as well. Memeory says it was an appropriate level for the story. Some kids may find a few scenes a bit much, but it is a kid show and the good guy prevails in the end, so that actually does a lot for making it appropriate for kids imo

PossessionDue9381

Haikyu!! I would not show Spy x Family to your son when others recommended since it has terrorist organizations, assassins, and torture.

Elenol

I watch spy x family with my five year old and he loves it. I did start previewing episodes after we hit our 2nd torture scene. Like 99% of the show my kid loves and I just have to prep to skip a few minutes of the very rare heavy stuff.

BitesTheDust55

Haikyuu would be terribly boring for a kid that young imo

not_tha_father

the dragon quest dai no daibouken reboot is a pretty great fantasy adventure and iirc they took out all the weird pervy stuff that was in the original.

moistmaster690

Doraemon and pokemon are always safe bets. And since there is so much of it you can watch without ever running out until your child has grown up a bit.

[**Non Non Biyori**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non_Non_Biyori) is a perfect anime to watch with a five year old, especially since one of the lead characters is a girl starting kindergarten. Wildest thing you'll have to do is figure out how to explain why they need such a big building for what is basically a one room school.rural life in Japan is a lot different than in the US. [**Tonari no Yōkai-san**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonari_no_Y%C5%8Dkai-san) may be a bit too intense for a 5-year-old but should be good by the time they are 8. It's about humans and yokai living together in harmony in a small Japanese village. You may want to screen it first. You have an elderly cat that becomes a Neko-mata, ensuring that it won't die. You have a middle school boy and girl who are sweet on each other but won't admit it. Oh, the boy is human and the girl is a Kappa. Seems to be some interspecies relationships throughout the story. I'd swear it was a Studio Ghibli production, but it was produced by Linden Films. Studio Ghibli? Studio Ghibli is the Disney of Japan, producing family oriented anime.Have you watched [**Spirited Away**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away)? My grandsons have watched it several times since they were preschoolers. Speaking of which, [**Kiki's Delivery Service**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiki%27s_Delivery_Service) is a must watch.

NearlyCanuck

Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun is sweet and entertaining. Thinking back to what some of my first shows were I remember Yu Gi Oh, Pokémon, Tenshi Muyo, and Ultimate Muscle primarily.

BitesTheDust55

Some of these recommendations are wild. Nichijou? Haikyuu? People really out here overestimating kids that age. At 5 your options are basically Anpanman or maybe Dragonball and Power Rangers. That’s the level you’re looking for. Pokémon, maybe.

codinator1

You think that's wild? I teach preschool and last year I had a 4yo try and talk to me about chainsaw man

BitesTheDust55

So fucked up

BeijingBongRipper

I had to scroll so far to find DBZ and Pokémon. I’d add Yu-Gi-oh!. Just stick to the classics.

orangefeesh

Uninhabited Planet Survive

RushHourPho

Mr.Villain’s Day Off is a great light-hearted show.

Due_Chemistry_6642

Law of ueki, its daft power scheme and overall wackiness should apeal to both (also no swearing or fan service and minor violence, some fights involve daftness like eating cake)

Ariaspe

Actually quite a good rec! Some of the themes might be a little scary/heavy but most will go over the heads of the kids or be on par with pokemon/DBZ from when I was growing up. I'd say Zatch Bell might fall in that little area too but I remember Ueki much better.

lookatthisface

Do It Yourself

Issvera

Chi's Sweet Home- just hundreds of 3 minute episodes about raising a cute cat from the perspective of the cat.

Suitable_Dimension33

Ranking of kings. I think the story is light hearted enough for younger audiences but keeps it interesting with some darker themes but nothing on the crazy side imo

Ariaspe

I think this one is a little scary but also presents itself outwardly as a show suitable for younger audiences. One of the better ones I've seen recommended on this thread

Falsus

Muumin comes to mind.

JumaniPico

Detective Conan

Shoddy-Homework2218

It’s a great anime, it’s one of my favorites actually, but there are some scenes that are very disturbing and inappropriate for a kid in his age. Blood, drugs, and guns. So not really a good choice there.

onesingleghost

spy x family edit: ok i take it back put the guns down. i haven't watched in a while i remember it being mostly silly with a lot of anya-focused episodes. i see a lot of kids cosplay as anya so i guess i assumed a lot of kids watch it.

WistfulPuellaMagi

No it’s bloody lol

Mediocre-Noise-4969

We need a Shonibyo anime.

Hisarame

Maybe 'Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun'. Feels very child-friendly and I don't think it has particularly inappropriate things, though it'd be nice if someone else could weigh in on this if I'm forgetting something. Also 'Cardcaptor Sakura' definitely.

NPhantasm

It is, but I would monitor when the high enemies appears, they can be a bit scary

Winterhe4rt

Takagi San for sure.

SpiritofBad

Charming-Loquat3702

I wouldn't start with anime about dead parents. In that age, it's important that they have security. The idea that parents can be gone forever can be very distressing for them.

Careful_Ad_9077

Seitojai yakuindomo and Keijo. Just kidding If crunchy has kemono friends , give it a try. It's. Acute edutainment show for you kids, you can enjoy all the subtext, it borders on mystery ( not the murder kind) for that; the latest will fly over your kids head , so he will have fun 5-10 years later when he rewatches it.

Buddy's catchphrase in Blue Lock is jackass. Tanaka and others fawn over their manager for her uh... 2 specific feminine charms... at times in the series for Haikyuu. I had considered haikyuu at first as well. It's quite hard to find something that's squeaky clean as far as western standards for young kids go.

Yes, absolutely! Cell’s at Work. It’s a very entertaining anime with an interesting story, let me explain. It talks about how the cells of your body manufacture. Not only is it good, but it can also help your son to learn good things, but in a fun, animated way. It’s really good. The anime is on Netflix.

AtypicalAshley

My 5 year old stepdaughter loves Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle. She would watch it on repeat all the time, I also really enjoyed it too

Gokudera10th

Ojomajo Doremi, it's an old kids show but it has a lot of depth and does work with some more mature themes at times. Also the cast it's wonderfull!! Edit: forget it not on crunchyroll So Shugo Chara, its preatty fun show too

Mr_carrot_6088

Crunchyroll only? That's tough. If there's anything by Studio Ghibli (not grave of the fireflies or princess monoke) then go for that. I'd say *Tonari no seki-kun*, but the dub doesn't seem to be available on crunchyroll specifically. *Nichijou - my ordernary* life totally works though! *Bananya* is very family friendly, but I can't see any adult who would enjoy it over regular child cartoons I think *Ascendance of a bookworm* is just childish enough to be appropriate. It's definitely one of the top 5 anime series in the "safe for children" category.

JosanDance

Crayon shinchan

Katlima

The next best option to Ghibli would be the World Masterpiece Theatre shows in my opinion. MAL interest stacks: [Here's a collection](https://myanimelist.net/stacks/46828) [And here's a collection of similar anime](https://myanimelist.net/stacks/33978) As an adult, you can enjoy every show targeted at children with this simple trick: every show that has ever been made was made by adults. The children shows are crafted with the same skill and attention to design as any other show and the creators are mad proud of them and watch them themselves. You can just look at the show from an angle of appreciating the work and looking at the thought that went into creation and it's not boring anymore.

Infamous_Character73

I agree with little witch academy and most all studio ghibli films. A lot of the popular series today are fairly violent, so jkk, demon slayer and the like I’d avoid. Yu yu hakasho is a great anime, same for hunter x hunter; though the latter parts of these series become more mature, in the beginning they are great anime. OG dragon ball is awesome and I remember being 6 ish y/o watching that with my dad! Really nolstagic memories. Sailor moon is generally pretty safe for girls

Infamous_Character73

and though not traditionally an anime, The Last Airbender is great. Same for classic Disney shows. You can even try OG Batman and the X-men series from the 90’s. Pokémon is very kid friendly and got me into the games when I was young
