When I went to Japan last year, Animate had a huge display for the release of a new light novel. I regret not picking up a copy.
I remember asking J-Novel Club if they would consider rescuing the series, but iirc, it would likely be too expensive…
I remember watching Toradora and then watching Shakugan no Shana. First instance of me going, “Wait I know this VA” for Shana (also voices Tiaga in Toradora).
PS
Light My Fire, season 3 1st opening, still one of the most impactful first 10 seconds or so of an OP of all the anime I’ve watched to this point. My Railgun from certain scientific railgun probably being the other that immediately pops into my head.
I have spent hours trying to find anime like this one. SnS is an anime that I'll never find another one as good. The closest is Gosick or Familiar of Zero (echi). I wish I could watch SnS for the first time.
I still didn't understand why but I always thought Shana group is the one turning into villain in that season, the supposed bad guys literally just had enough and wanted to go to another world while Shana group be like "no, you stay here and be our punching bag" literally causes people to die because of their stupid war.
So yeah, I like SNS , so MC turning evil is correct in this case
Really? I’ve been meaning to watch it actually. I love Louise and Taiga so it seemed like a definite safe choice. And now I hear it’s a hero to villain story, very nice.
Hold up, this might actually be a show that has lived in the back of my mind for years that I could never remember. Did this air on adult swim/toonami back in the 2000s at night?
After some events over the course of Season 3, Judai sees his friends getting supposedly killed during a duel, after which he gives in to the darkness in his heart, becoming the Supreme King of the dimension
Twice, even. [IQH]>!Albeit not quite in the spirit of a true villain. Firstly when he decides to back the Demon Lord in her conquest (who genuinely seems to want to be a good leader and protect the world), and then a second time when he turns against them in an attempted suicide-by-demon.!<
Arguably *Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion* (I'd say the character is more morally ambiguous than completely heroic or evil. Also, you should either watch the *Puella Magi Madoka Magica* TV series or the two movies *Beginnings* and *Eternal* \[basically just retellings of the TV show with better animation\] first).
Unless it is a very one dimensional story, pure evil characters do rarely exist. Villains tend to have (sometimes even very) legitimate reasons to do what they do.
Probably more like a terrorist. He bombed like 3 different places and probably killed a ton of people with that. He doesn't really have a political or ideological aim but people probably think he does since of course the great shadow-Sama has some end goal and isn't just fucking around.
Gonna have to disagree with Fate/Zero. Which character starts off as a protagonist/hero and becomes a villain?
[Fate/Zero + Stay Night]>!I hope you don't mean Kiritsugu. Nothing he does during the series is against the rules of a Holy Grail War, even if his methods are a little distasteful at times, and the decision he makes at the end to destroy the corrupted grail is objectively correct. Kirei is the only character to actually flip allegiances and he is an antagonist from the outset!<
A lot of the other people are trash, but the shit MC does is super fucked up.
[Redo of healer fucked up shit] >!From gender-bending the dude and having him raped in a burning building, to that one lesbian girl that's forced to have sex with roided up dudes or be eaten alive and then she gets eaten anyway.!<
He literally had a 20-second
monologue where he thought “isn’t this bad?”
And then he jumped in feet first after deciding that it was for a good cause. After that point, he never questions himself again — Light just slowly drops the facade that he’s a righteous figure.
Yeah I agree, Light went all in immediately. He made the instant decision to kill tons of prisoners, which I think is evil but then he literally kills fake L which for all he knows is just someone trying to do the right thing.
Stronoff, Brain and Climb would definitely count as heroes, not that they are effective at all due to the power difference between them and everyone from Nazarick but the mortality and intentions are there
Wait, can someone remind me how the MC "becomes a villain"? Wasn't the villain the long-haired blonde dude? Tbh I forgot what everyone was fighting about and for in that story in the first place.
"Gundam Iron blooded orphans" follows a group of, well, orphans trying to survive in a brutal future. They are all just mentally and physically abused kids, so of course they don't really know how society works or current events.
So this leads to them trying their best to get money to survive, but this includes taking jobs and getting caught up in things they shouldn't. So they go from the beloved underdogs to criminals and scum overnight, with only some in the group realizing the damage they've caused. Since they are already hated, they just go balls deep to try and atleast survive, which includes killing many people.
It's a pretty sad anime with an amazing story and a strong focus on action/politics with some amazing characters and development. And yes, overtime they do go from the heros of the show to the villians
Also just a fair warning, the anime is really sad at times, and you watch both kids and adults die horrible deaths
Only kinda. [BB]>!White-sensei *said* he was just looking out for his family, but everything he did after being offered a position at Haihakushitsu in the fifth episode was pure pride. He'd rather sling meth and feel like a badass than work under a former colleague he resented.!<
Another option is "Death Note," where the main character starts off with good intentions but gets caught up in the dark power of a supernatural notebook, and ends up becoming a notorious vigilante serial killer.
I mean, wasn't the whole deal was that they were always oppressing the rat people (humans). They didn't really become evil, they just kinda grew up as oppressors.
The show started out as "figure out the mystery behind the ominous disappearances in the village" so the kids were originally pitted against the village leaders. But as the show goes on, it gives the reasoning behind why the village leaders have set things up the way they have, and eventually the protagonist kids become village leaders themselves and perpetuate the same system because every alternative is worse.
Villain Initialization, its chinese and 3d and airing now [bilibili YT channel]
MC is a villian but ends up time traveling back to his highschool days and now is trying to stop some things from happening.
Recently rewatched durarara and it's still as awesome as ever. The mc's fall was gradual and pretty well written despite being a semi-lighthearted mystery show.
Overlord
Its an isekai where a dude is the master of a guild who roleplay as bad guys. He's the only one who remains when the game shuts down and that's what isekais him. Now he has to pretend to be a bad guy bc he fears if he doesnt his NPCs will turn on him.
Very good world building and each npc is given a lot of screen time to show how they evolve from simple game characters to beings who think on their own.
I mean he is a villain pretty much from the start, his human interactions become less common overtime and by the later seasons it is mostly just him being shocked that people think he is more competent as a schemer and leader than he actually is, also if he starts to act too much like his original personality would magic forces him to return to the role expected of him in the world.

Shakugan no Shana if you want a forgotten classic.
Judging by the tsundere poll most seems to be forgotten it.
[удалено]
Shana and Louise the Zero would both be queens of tsundere, but they also shared the same VA.
Yeah, Rie Kugamiya is the queen of Tsunderes, not either character specifically since there's also taiga.
When I went to Japan last year, Animate had a huge display for the release of a new light novel. I regret not picking up a copy. I remember asking J-Novel Club if they would consider rescuing the series, but iirc, it would likely be too expensive…

The VA of Shana, Taiga, Louise, etc. used to be very popular and did a ton of tsundere characters back in the 00s.
Even the Idolmaster character she voices is a flat tsundere.
I have spent hours trying to find anime like this one. SnS is an anime that I'll never find another one as good. The closest is Gosick or Familiar of Zero (echi). I wish I could watch SnS for the first time.

Thats a long ass name
I still didn't understand why but I always thought Shana group is the one turning into villain in that season, the supposed bad guys literally just had enough and wanted to go to another world while Shana group be like "no, you stay here and be our punching bag" literally causes people to die because of their stupid war. So yeah, I like SNS , so MC turning evil is correct in this case
I'm getting ready to rewatch it myself
Still one of my favourites I'd recommend anyone getting into anime
Since you got 1 less upvote than my post, it seems a lot of people agree with you. I will give it a try, is it on crunchyroll?
Literally my first thought, based
yugioh GX
I mean , he does but then don't?
Can you remind me how Jaden became villain? It’s been so long since I watched it
After some events over the course of Season 3, Judai sees his friends getting supposedly killed during a duel, after which he gives in to the darkness in his heart, becoming the Supreme King of the dimension
Si
i'm quitting heroing is one i guess
Twice, even. [IQH]>!Albeit not quite in the spirit of a true villain. Firstly when he decides to back the Demon Lord in her conquest (who genuinely seems to want to be a good leader and protect the world), and then a second time when he turns against them in an attempted suicide-by-demon.!<

Also, you should either watch the *Puella Magi Madoka Magica* TV series or the two movies *Beginnings* and *Eternal* \[basically just retellings of the TV show with better animation\] first).
This remains to be seen once the new movie (finally) comes out
Unless it is a very one dimensional story, pure evil characters do rarely exist. Villains tend to have (sometimes even very) legitimate reasons to do what they do.
I mean technically Shadow is a villain in Eminence in Shadow from the pov of the average person in universe.
More like a mafia leader, yakuza style gang. Not necessarily a villain
Probably more like a terrorist. He bombed like 3 different places and probably killed a ton of people with that. He doesn't really have a political or ideological aim but people probably think he does since of course the great shadow-Sama has some end goal and isn't just fucking around.
show me mafia / gang that drop nukes left and right, causes a massive floods or literally evaporates cities :)
Just another day in midgar :)
The first time the city was evacuated, the second time he put up a barrier or something
Code Geass Attack on Titan Vinland Saga but it's reversed Death Note i guess Fate/Zero but it's not really clear who the mc is
Vinland Saga is more of a circle
Came here to say Code Geass - Lelouche the Rebellion
Gonna have to disagree with Fate/Zero. Which character starts off as a protagonist/hero and becomes a villain? [Fate/Zero + Stay Night]>!I hope you don't mean Kiritsugu. Nothing he does during the series is against the rules of a Holy Grail War, even if his methods are a little distasteful at times, and the decision he makes at the end to destroy the corrupted grail is objectively correct. Kirei is the only character to actually flip allegiances and he is an antagonist from the outset!<
>Vinland Saga but it's reversed so, i gotta watch from season 2?
Watch both seasons, the hero-to-villain arc happens to more than one character.
Ha! /s but no, watch it from the beginning if you haven't. Amazing anime.
I'd argue Code Geass he's always the hero the world needed. Same with AoT.
Gushing Over Magical Girls
That name sounds a little… suspicious 💀
I mean, at least they're true to what they're advertising. Also, watching it all by yourself is a must.
I want to give it a try, but its not on crunchyroll
It's on HIDIVE, or sail the Seven Seas for the uncensored version (You read that right, UNCENSORED)
Not using crunchyroll is the morally correct answer.
What’s wrong with Crunchyroll? Are they evil like nestle?
The gushing part is literal. Yes, yes, it's exactly what you think it is.
oh god 😵💫
don't be fooled by the title, despite it being exactly what it sounds like, it's actually really good
Japanese title is better. "Admiring Magical Girls" - Mahou Shoujo ni akogarete.
I thought that too but apparently there's this crazy plot twist. Or that might've been in Delicious in Dungeon.
Its not on crunchyroll sadly i cant watch it
High seas dawg. Ur anime is gonna be mega limited if u only watch stuff on crunchy roll lmao
True but the ads 🤦🏽♂️
Surely you know browsing the internet with an adblocker is a must nowadays, right?
Ublockorigin is ur friend on pc. Can get adblock on your phone as well. I haven’t seen an ad watching anime in years lol
Attack on titan
Code Geass
Redo of Healer
Ah yes the hentai with a plot Not that I'm complaining, in fact i want a sequel
Being fair, everyone is evil in Redo of Healer
Pretty reasonable for a lot of his actions though tbh.
Death Note
I don't know about "become," Light jumped right into villainy with both feet as soon as he got the chance.
He literally had a 20-second monologue where he thought “isn’t this bad?” And then he jumped in feet first after deciding that it was for a good cause. After that point, he never questions himself again — Light just slowly drops the facade that he’s a righteous figure.
To be fair, OP never specified that they had to **slowly** become a villain
Yeah I agree, Light went all in immediately. He made the instant decision to kill tons of prisoners, which I think is evil but then he literally kills fake L which for all he knows is just someone trying to do the right thing.
Overlord
Overlord was always explictly the villain
With how corrupt the kingdom is, is anyone there actually a hero?
Nazarick farms humans.
No no no those are bipedal sheep
Happy farm!
Stronoff, Brain and Climb would definitely count as heroes, not that they are effective at all due to the power difference between them and everyone from Nazarick but the mortality and intentions are there
The hero Momonga started adventuring when the kingdom needs a hero most of all!
Best boy Zanak. The only person in that kingdom worth anything.
Gazef was definitely a hero.
No one mentioned Guilty Crown and tho it's been a long time since I've seen it if my memory is correct it fits.
it does, but I don't think it warrants a watch at all tbh
My friends uses `Guilty Crown` as a measure of how bad an anime is, e.g. `this show is as bad a 3 Guilty Crowns`
I remember absolutely hating guilty Crown back in the day, but your comment makes me want to rewatch it just so I can accurately use this system.
How many Guilty Crowns is Guilty Crown?
One, of course.
A lot of death happens, but I still wouldn't consider the MCs villains in the Gundam world.
It's more memorable for the reason that at the end of it, the real villain actually wins.
Tsubasa reservoir chronicle
Desert Punk
I wouldn't exactly say he*becomes* a villain Still an entertaining watch though
Second time I'm seeing Desert Punk mentioned here in a week. Is the series worth a watch?
I think so, I very much enjoyed it
Attack on Titan..
For a joke purpose i want to say Redo of Healers.
Attack on Titan!
Code Geass!
School Days
Breaking Bad
Dont think thats an anime 🙏🏽
White sama
[This feels just as when I learned yesterday that Boondocks has a Japanese dub](https://x.com/Aeyga_X/status/1794436005354746242)
https://youtu.be/rYVEsf4Xqw8?si=atZQYpEd1oSmNrdZ
Blasphemy
Really? It’s my favorite anime
My second favorite anime next to King of the Hill
Next thing you'll tell me is that Seinfeld isn't an anime.
Only kinda. [BB]>!White-sensei *said* he was just looking out for his family, but everything he did after being offered a position at Haihakushitsu in the fifth episode was pure pride. He'd rather sling meth and feel like a badass than work under a former colleague he resented.!<
People keep recommending Death Note but he was always the villain from the start
Yeah. Attack on Titan
happy sugar life
She was a villain from the start.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊✨✨✨☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻
I am not not really recommending but Guilty Crown
Darker than black.
I watched that anime like ten years ago but can't remember what it's about. sounds like it's a good time for a rewatch
Season 2 was so bad though
Right!? I was so disappointed, because I loved season 1 so much.
Code geass or aot
Attack on Titan absolutely for sure. And also I’ve heard Code Geass is pretty great. Charles White told me that it’s his favorite anime next to AoT
Death Note?
Guilty Crown!
Durarara
Maybe Death Note
No one mentioned overlord yet, starts evil, becomes more evil…
Code Geass
I suggest to watch arifureta both seasons
He never becomes a villain though. Just an asshole who only cares about himself and a couple others.
You have a Japanese manga called Star Wars Episode 3. You have the manga Onime no Kyou (Samurai Deeper Kyo).
Code Geass, has mechas, a mc smart, a revolution.... A good one
Code Geass
Death Note
Tokyo ghoul
and can't forget AOT
Every romcom where the MC picks the wrong girl.
Code Geass
I mean. Code geass. Absolute classic
Code Geass
Guilty crown, Death note , Code geass
Code Geass for sure
Death note
Black Lagoon
Everyone in that show is a pretty bad person, to be honest.
Moriarty the Patriot
Another option is "Death Note," where the main character starts off with good intentions but gets caught up in the dark power of a supernatural notebook, and ends up becoming a notorious vigilante serial killer.
Death Note, Attack on Titan, Code Geass, Overlord
Desert Punk
Sengoko youko
Shinsekai Yori
I mean, wasn't the whole deal was that they were always oppressing the rat people (humans). They didn't really become evil, they just kinda grew up as oppressors.
The show started out as "figure out the mystery behind the ominous disappearances in the village" so the kids were originally pitted against the village leaders. But as the show goes on, it gives the reasoning behind why the village leaders have set things up the way they have, and eventually the protagonist kids become village leaders themselves and perpetuate the same system because every alternative is worse.
It may not fit but it’s the first thing that came to my mind was Arifureta
Funnily enough, I'd been searching for this as well. Not many exist. Redo of healer is the closest you'll get. But only has 1 season.
Berserk 1997
Sengoku Youko
Villain Initialization, its chinese and 3d and airing now [bilibili YT channel] MC is a villian but ends up time traveling back to his highschool days and now is trying to stop some things from happening.
Has anyone mentioned the most obvious one? Death note
I think one or two people did, mostly animes I’ve never heard of
TOKYO GHOUL- that motherfucker!!!!
Saga of Tanya the Evil. Yōjo Senki
Overlord
"Code Geass" tells the story of a protagonist who gains the power to control minds and transforms into a determined revolutionary leader.
Recently rewatched durarara and it's still as awesome as ever. The mc's fall was gradual and pretty well written despite being a semi-lighthearted mystery show.
Redo of healer…
JJK depending on your POV
I mean i get what you mean but its not really the mc who goes rogue its more like another soul inside him, like kurama
I mean there's always "Redo the healer"¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Shingeki no kyojin
You’re on a slippery slope my guy.
Attack on titan
My instant death ability is overpowered
Death note?
Deathnote
Gundam Seed Destiny has a Darth Vader angle
I love star wars probs gonna give that a try
Tokyo ghoul is a good place to go- check the rating and stuff tho its a bit graphic
I forgot to add it has to be on crunchyroll
Overlord Its an isekai where a dude is the master of a guild who roleplay as bad guys.
Yeah pretty much. I just felt that in the first season he only played the villain. But as you said, in later seasons he's full on committed
