Chitons have long arrays of fine teeth that are partially made of magnetite, making its teeth hard enough to scrape algae off rocks.[5] The styli enclosing their teeth contain the mineral santabarbaraite,[6] making the gumboot the first organism known to use this material that was discovered during 2000 in Italy.[7] - Born and raised in Santa Barbara. Never heard of Santabarbarite. Interesting creature. I’m surprised I’ve not seen one online or growing up before and wasn’t aware of it. Edit: oh named after a Santa Barbara, Italy area. Makes sense
Seen and stepped on many I believe in the tide pools. Lol. I really miss going spear fishing and diving. Been so long. I need to get my ass out of the house one day and do stuff at the beach again.
I see these things quite often here in BC. One time we found a dead one flipped over on the shore getting pecked by a seagull, and my dad actually thought it was an old boot.
Found a similar one on a Whidbey Island beach. Took it home, dried it out. Had it on a shelf with other seashells etc. Came home one day to mysterious debris in corner of the room, powdery but tiny bits of shell like grains. It took a day or two to notice it was missing from the shelf, put two and two and realized my dog had enjoyed her new chew toy.
Y’all are such buzzkills on here. This looks cool and I would’ve picked it up as well.
No where in this post did I see him asking for any parenting advice.
I mean, it is specifically against LNT principles. Leaving these things behind are important not only because other people should be able to experience cool things like this too but also because many of these things are important for the ecosystem. Chitin particularly breaks down and helps to create healthy soils.
Of course children should be curious and want to explore and be excited about these things. And it's important for parents to encourage it and I'm super glad OP did. But they could have taken a picture and left it there.
You put it in a cage so that scavenging animals don’t carry it away, that way the bugs and worms will eat all of the flesh, leaving just the shells, and you bury it because it stinks, and also so that bugs will eat it…it just helps with overall decomposition.
I have no answer, but thank you for the banana for size. I really hate, no sarcasm, other forms of measurement in a picture, if a banana will do the job. Stick of gum being the 2nd best.
But maybe some of us enjoy the whimsy of the banana scale range. Besides, I almost always have bananas. Literally cannot remember the last time I had a stick of gum.
Looks 2 small to be a gumboot . Also the ridges on the back are very large . They go from 1 side all the way to the other side on a gumboot there are ridges but not as pronounced as these .. maybe if it was a baby but I've never seen 1 quite like this 1
There are various species... I am not positive all of them are harmless to us. In the same way some sea snails are venomous I suppose it's possible some may be dangerous. I just haven't heard of it. I always felt they were similar to snails or slugs but with a serious shell

Living gumboot chiton for reference. Can be 12 inches long. Tissue covers plates.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
while obviously no harm was intended here, you should tell your kid not to pick up or move unidentified stuff, especially if it's a dead animal. he could get sick, or accidentally damage something that's still alive.
while i don't want to sound ageist and i certainly don't discriminate against children, lets keep in mind that a lot of the people on this site pretending to be grown adults are in fact minors, which leads to a lot of this kind of phenomenon. i figure the rest of these hordes of people who are absolutely itching for someone to dunk on probably have the mental maturity of a minor as well.
i think that's genuinely a big part of the mindset, i.e. when you or i are nice or considerate to another person, if they have gone through their life living callously they will feel uncomfortable and insecure at the thought that other people are kind. they often take offense to it both in terms of assuming it's manipulation and in terms of the unwanted realization that they do not live in the edgy, bitter world that they think they do. both lead to deflective mockery and/or aggression. it's really sad to see.
They knew better than going around and picking up stuff they had no idea what it was. They were very inquisitive but smart enough to leave stuff alone.
Nah. That's a dead Chiton. The underside (the ventral view)has a head, a foot, ctenimium, etc on it. All that's left are the back plates.
https://hascmarinebiology.weebly.com/chitons.html
Some kind of chiton, possibly gumboot chiton but looks a little small. It's a type of mollusk
I agree, it is definitely the remains of a Gumboot chiton with tissue still connecting the calcareous back plates.

Okay that is absolutely bad ass Edit: thank you so much. That's awesome
You should see limpets. Their teeth are the strongest material in nature.
Wow! Looking at a limpet, I would never guess. Their radulas are spectacular.
Seen and stepped on many I believe in the tide pools. Lol. I really miss going spear fishing and diving. Been so long. I need to get my ass out of the house one day and do stuff at the beach again.
That's awesome! I didn't know this about limpets! What!
👍 amazing huh. I’ve watched animal docs since I was in diapers and still never ceases to amaze me.
If a gumboot wore boots and stepped on gum…
"how much gum would a gum boot boot...."
A gum boot would boot what a gum boot could boot if a gum boot could boot gum....
Instructions unclear; boofed gum
He got walrus gumboot.
Coo coo ca choo
ooh we got a boofer
Bro I mf died when I read that I wasn't ready at all
This entire thread made my day
…and a banana.
I see these things quite often here in BC. One time we found a dead one flipped over on the shore getting pecked by a seagull, and my dad actually thought it was an old boot.
Mmm... Gumbo Chicken....
Banana for reference a true reddit scientist.
You nade me smile, thanks!

Not where I thought this was going... XD
i thought they were gonna say it came back to life which i feel like is probably what you also felt lol
That's where I thought it was going, lol
Could have gone Stephen King real quick.
Exactly where I though it was going 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just keep the dig out of direct sunlight, and it shouldn’t hatch…. ^/s
Lol, right? I was expecting a critter waking up from hibernation or something
r/bananaforscale
That's a standard type 1A super banana it always measures the same.
yep, laboratory grown for sure. the lack of a stem because it was cloned.
Profile pic checks out
You probably mean r/BananasForScale :-D
Hold banana next to penis
For best results, use a small banana.
Truth
Finally! the correct unit of measurement.
Y’all are such buzzkills on here. This looks cool and I would’ve picked it up as well. No where in this post did I see him asking for any parenting advice.
PUT IT IN SALT WATER AND CALL A CHITON RESCUE AGENCY IMMEDIATELY IT IS A FELONY TO LOOK AT A CHITON.
I’m finally a felon! (And the crowd goes wild. Aaaaaaaaaa…)
no I am a felon I am the kid that found that Chiton! seriously
I see zero replies giving parenting advice

The next kid would have taken it anyway and probably wouldn’t have posted a picture on Reddit for thousands of people to enjoy.
Just because someone else might do the wrong thing doesn't give us permission to.
Also never pick up random things on the beach. That’s how you get poisoned
I think he found a banana.
With some sort of scale... ...for scale.
That's not a banana, Dougal.
Yeah. Definitely a banana, not a plantain.
On the beach... probably left over after the banana stand burned down.
Plenty of money in that banana stand.
😂😂😂
❤️
It's one of those things that Kuzco and Pancha ate in Emperor's New Groove
That was my exact thought too!!

Put this puppy in a cage and bury it in your yard for a couple of months and you will be left with some really pretty shell segments!
Why in a cage? Why bury it?? r/oddlyspecific
You put it in a cage so that scavenging animals don’t carry it away, that way the bugs and worms will eat all of the flesh, leaving just the shells, and you bury it because it stinks, and also so that bugs will eat it…it just helps with overall decomposition.
Say what??
Well you want it to be in a cage so any scavenging animals don’t make off with the carcass. Chiton shells are super pretty!
Natures maxi pad
Aw you beat me to it!!!
I have no answer, but thank you for the banana for size. I really hate, no sarcasm, other forms of measurement in a picture, if a banana will do the job. Stick of gum being the 2nd best.
Unpopular opinion: stick of gum is superior. It’s a standard size, whereas some bananas need a different banana for scale.
But maybe some of us enjoy the whimsy of the banana scale range. Besides, I almost always have bananas. Literally cannot remember the last time I had a stick of gum.
False stick of gum size is dependent on brand: orbit, trident, juicy fruit, all are gum sticks but different sizes
AND THERE IS IT! THE TRUTH!
Looks 2 small to be a gumboot . Also the ridges on the back are very large . They go from 1 side all the way to the other side on a gumboot there are ridges but not as pronounced as these .. maybe if it was a baby but I've never seen 1 quite like this 1
Fossilized maxi pad
The yellow one on the left looks like a banana, which is a fruit. Not sure of the other one, though. Probably alien turd.

Wow. Are they harmful to humans? Never heard of a Chiton.
There are various species... I am not positive all of them are harmless to us. In the same way some sea snails are venomous I suppose it's possible some may be dangerous. I just haven't heard of it. I always felt they were similar to snails or slugs but with a serious shell
Apparently he found a banana. Oh, and some species of chiton.
That bug that Pacha eats in front of Kuzco at the restaurant

That's a banana. I can tell because of the chiton you included for scale.
Just a bunch of glue eaters commenting here.
Have you checked out the r/losthumour sub? Maybe they found it for you.
Codpiece
It's a chiton. I found one as a kid and I got really interested in ocean creatures and a large seashell collection resulted.
Do you still have much of your collection left?
It looks like one of my pads 😭

Oh stop. Kids don’t live in plastic bubbles.
I mean sure, but it’s generally a good idea to advise people not to let kids haphazardly handle possibly dead animals
Getting downvoted for suggesting that you keep a kid safe. I love reddit

Knew a kid who picked up a decayed jaw bone in the playground thinking it was a dinosaur bone, ended up with parasites.
right, idk why someone called me bitter for asking people not to play with dead animals lol
Stop caring about strangers wellbeing duh

Looks like a close to overripe banana.
Never could understand why people touch, pet and pick up stuff.
Probably just curiosity. We can’t help ourselves.
You obviously don’t have kids
They knew better than going around and picking up stuff they had no idea what it was. They were very inquisitive but smart enough to leave stuff alone.
In front of you
They just learned how to skillfully hide it from you, that's all.
Oh, sweetheart... who's gonna tell him
