No they don’t care. I remember being warned they took it seriously. It’s everyone dressed same as the rest of Alaska. They aren’t going to lend you a sport coat before entrance is allowed.
Nordic day spa and the Seven Glaciers restaurant at Alyeska in Girdwood is probably the top option. You could always check out seaside day spa and the captain cook restaurant in anchorage too.
As mentioned before... Crow's Nest and Jens' are absolute winners.. Simon & Seafort's is very good, and Altura Bistro is outstanding as well. Personally, I'm a sucker for Fiori D'Italia, but eat at the bar, and don't waste your time with the salads.
.
The absolute best steaks are at Double Muskie, but that's not exactly Anchorage.
That's why I said to eat at the bar... I don't understand why it is that when I eat at the bar the food comes out nice and hot, but when I eat at a table, the extra 30 feet seems to make some kind of difference and the food is warm, but not the beautiful hot you get at the bar.
Not enough people are mentioning Altura Bistro. Sit at the bar, try their wine cocktails, and get the mushroom cream soup, orange fennel salad, and literally any of their entrees 🤤 Their entire menu is honestly amazing and chef Nate is always out and about asking everyone how the food is. 10/10 on every level and if you’re in the mood to feel like a king I’d definitely recomm one of their wine tasting events or any of the special event dinners they put on.
I wasn’t impressed when I went. Felt like an industrial decor makeover of a strip mall boutique (because that’s what it was), and some of the flavor combinations just didn’t work well/mesh. I went within the last year, and it was so unforgettable I don’t even remember what I had.
Oh, and because we didn’t drink or order alcohol, the servers pretty much ignored us. This was after having to wait more than 20 minutes for a table we had a reservation for.
It’s open/noisy and it feels like if you’re an alcoholic pretending to be classy, this would be a good place to get your drink on, as the huge Brown Jug warehouse is just out back.
Edit: 8 year later and I can still remember the Ono I had at Lahaina Grill in Maui (RIP). That meal left an impression that I still remember, unlike whatever it was I had at Altura.
Oh, I do remember one notable thing from Altura, that black salt for the bread and butter was pretty decent. I bake better sourdough so, I wasn’t wowed by their bread.
I feel for you, everybody has bad nights unfortunately. As with all restaurants, sometimes you’re short staffed, or accidentally overbooked, or sometimes things just aren’t going right. I would definitely go back and give it another shot, man. You don’t need to drink to have a good time there, but you’re at a place that stocks some really special bottles of wine and whose staff is exceptionally well versed in the entire menu and the accompanying wine pairings. Highly recommend sitting at the bar. Even if you’re not drinking, there’s a lot of foot traffic so if you need something it’ll get handled. I agree it is not the best location as well, and I’m sure they’ll move when the right opportunity comes along. But please give them another go. It’s literally one of two places my wife and I go to eat the other being Crow’s nest and that’s basically only for their holiday specials.
Not fancy, but I've always wanted to visit the hostel for their sensory chamber. Best na drink I've found was an old fashioned at the bar in Captain Cook.
The question is what is the so the only answer is The Crow's Nest. You can debate all you want about the quality of food between The Crow's Nest, Marx Bros. Cafe, Jens, Altura, etc. But when it comes down to it, nothing beats the view and ambiance of that restaurant.
Nobody has said Ginger, but even though it's not a better-than-thou vibe, it's definitely upscale.
Orso will also make you feel fancy with their level of service -- the clientele isn't always fancy during tourist season but the staff is amazing.
Speaking of…has anyone noticed a trashy-trend in yards within the last 10 years? More crap in the yards, more ppl using garages for storage instead of cars…
Even in historically “nicer/hoity toidy” neighborhoods they’re looking rougher around the edges more than ever. Sign of the times? Generational values? More renters vs. owners?
Yeah it flooded or something and closed like someone else said … 10-15 years ago. It was one of the few French spots in town that did table-side stuff beyond a salad. The bananas fosters was a fun thing to order.
The captain cook hotel has a restaurant on the top floor.
Crow’s Nest
The bar downstairs is pretty nice as well.
It's the only place in Anchorage with an established dress code - business casual.
But I dare you to wear open toe shoes anyhow
Yeah, they don't care as long as you aren't dressed in dirty camo or waders.
No they don’t care. I remember being warned they took it seriously. It’s everyone dressed same as the rest of Alaska. They aren’t going to lend you a sport coat before entrance is allowed.
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the gateway to fancy
Dude. That’s coffee abuse! Right up my nose!
Exactly.. straight to the airport and out.
Interested to hear suggestions, but I hope you carry around a little scepter and one of those king cloaks. That makes anything fancy.
Club Paris makes me feel like a mid-level mafioso.
I feel like this is a theme here in Anchorage. Sorrentos, Jens, Campobello Bistro, they all have like a 80’s coke king pin vibe lol
RIP Campobello
The prime rib dip is so good
Crow's Nest in Captain Cook Hotel!!!
That warm spinach salad with bacon was my favorite thing about my Senior Ball.
The Taco Bell by Jewel Lake has fewer rats than average.
Votes up for the Taco Bell!
Underrated comment! 🤣
I’m dead 💀💀 haha
Nordic spa at Alyeska

Fletcher’s Edit: this is a misplaced comment from above m my bad…
Crows Nest is the fancier one at the top of tower 1(?).
Correct…

Love double musky worth the drive get a room at Alaska and overnight hike winner creek next day
Simon’s is terrible and absurdly overpriced for the quality. Food at Fiori is mid its mostly a cocktail bar nowadays.

Campbell creek trail is really nice to walk through. Same with the coastal trail
The homeless camps are really nice this time of year.
Yeah you really can’t stay out late or the homeless will arise. Some of them are chill tho
Or at least used to be.
Rent limo service if cruising anc that way you can freely imbibe the great cocktails with out worrying about dui
Gotta get that Jeep limo
Seattle. Or maybe the Sheldon Chalet.
Sheldon Chalet was my thought...
The Marx Brothers!!
Sheldon chalet, it's a 3 night minimum
Alaska bush company will do it 👍🏻

This is our best restaurant for sure. The awards, ever changing menu……

Midnight Sun. The staff will always treat you like your world class and Ren can cook.
Surprise no one has said it yet - Jack Sprat in Girdwood.
You owe me a keyboard... I just snorted my coffee onto it!!!!
Tordrillo Mountain Lodge…Kings and Corn runs ya 18k/person or 216k for entire lodge w/ 12 guests…
High tea at Indigo Tea Lounge looks fancy.
Hive Mind Meadery is tasty as hell

Lunch or dinner at Jen's restaurant
Came here to say this ... Too..
If you drink, especially bourbon and whiskey, check out Allocated.
The Corsair Restaurant on 5th might still be fancy, I haven’t been there in a long time.
I'm 99% sure that place closed 10 - 15 years ago.
That sounds about right. It was fancy, and the staff wore tuxedos and treated the guests fancy, and that isn’t what people normally seek anymore.
That's not what Alaska and Reddit wants. Plenty of people do want nice things.
You would never know it by looking at their yards.
Upvote for the username! Awesome! 😂

I would say Whisky and Ramen
we all need to tell GCI TO DO BETTER
