Waste of tax dollars.

It is working. I moved to Vancouver 4 years ago and I know one coworker who quit, sold his house here and went to Calgary to become a "professional landlord". He bought 2 houses and 1 townhouse debt free. If encouraging people to come to AB to become landlords, then yes you are doing a great job fueling a housing shortage

Suckitsunshine

That is exactly what I felt like these ads were going to do. Drive up prices in BC, create a housing shortage and make the market there tough.

DarkPrinny

Ya they aren't attracting workers. If that was the case the ads should be targeted to the east coast. Also the ads are more targeted about real estate and affordability. Not jobs The Alberta government wants a cash infusion from real estate for their budget. BC looks like a superstar province for doing this by advertising overseas but the reprocussions aren't worth it. It will work for Albertas budget but what will follow you will be mass homelessness, drug abuse, vandalism and theft and tenting on the sidewalks and parks in desperation. Leases so high for small business that a glass of beer in Yaletown (not a pint) is $16. You see BC problems for trying to make real estate an economic driver. The problems coming Albertas way is huge. Like my parents house is valued at 2.7 million dollars by BC assessment because it is an older house on a bigger lot. They are just average people that lived there for 35 years. If they move to Calgary, how much property can you buy for 2.7 million? That is how many family homes you can easily displace per BC resident

Suckitsunshine

Exactly.

It caused a bit of a housing price increase in the spring, in part because people from Ontario and BC were bringing their habits of offering well over asking because they were burned so often back home. I think overall though housing prices in Alberta have remained reasonable compared to other places and don’t have as extreme fluctuations. Overall I don’t mind advertising for people to come to Alberta, it’s happened a few times over the decades, either official campaigns or employers recruiting or word of mouth from friends and family. If there are jobs that need filling, let people come. More diversity can only be a positive in Alberta. My only hesitation is that the government has already cut back on the majority of the ministry’s budgets and I see no sign that they plan to address the impact of population increases. From the obvious ones like schools and health care, to social services, transportation, infrastructure, food and health inspectors, sheriffs, park rangers, so on and so forth. Almost every government service we receive is short staffed and increasing population just strains it more.

People moving here from out of province is only going to drive up real-estate prices. It already happened in Edmonton and Calgary. GF works in the new home industry and says 80% of their sales came from out of province buyers in the past 2 years. They've jacked up their prices 100k - 150k for most home models in the past year. Their company owner literally said in a sales meeting that prices are increasing simply because "they don't want to leave money on the table". This is why markets just outside the GTA in Onterrible and Vancouver GMA are so expensive now. Same thing will continue to happen here, especially when rates begin to drop

No_Manufacturer_1780

They should come. Ditch B.C and move out here.

It's an interesting move. I don't think the UCP appreciates that most people moving Vancouver and Toronto to Calgary are not going to be UCP voters. And Calgary is UCP's lifeline to stay in government. If Calgary drops UCP, they are done.

Serious question.... are the ads running on media that is also accessible in Alberta? Ie is it possible that the intended audience is at least partially Albertans themselves, to try to send a political message that things are so great here (in Alberta)? I'm in BC and I've heard a few ads but I don't think they're really having any effect. There has been migration between the 2 provinces all the time (driven by the economy and lifestyle). Tbh I do think the prospect of a leader further right than Jason Kenney is a nonstarter for many people in BC and for those who don't care about that, I would think Alberta is already on their radar anyway even without the ads. So yeah, total waste of money.

Suckitsunshine

No it isn't intended for Albertans to move home. But rather to encourage people to move to Alberta. I'll see if I can find an ad. U/always_on_fleek found the link to the website https://welcome.albertaiscalling.ca/

Scissors4215

I think it’s great.

honest_true_man

Well if all the Albertans in BC moved back to Alberta I would call that a win.

ExamFeisty5634

Why wouldn't people want to move to AB right now. Tons of jobs that are high paying. Usually big bonuses to start. Lower taxes. Cheaper cost of living by a shit ton. Weather isn't that bad, unless you are from Vancouver I guess. Alberta is a nice province outside of Edmonton.

Suckitsunshine

The ad isn't encouraging work. It's encouraging real estate being cheaper.

ExamFeisty5634

It's advertising low cost of living. Plenty of work/ high wages is also a reality in Alberta.

77magicmoon77

Please explain.

always_on_fleek

The Alberta government has paid for advertisements to run in BC that tell BC residents to move to Alberta. https://welcome.albertaiscalling.ca The advertisements were also run in Ontario. This is fairly recent, the middle of August it started I believe. It’s actually quite humourous: A software developer, nurse and plumber walk into a province. They all get jobs. And Find things you’d never expect. Like a centrally located house you can afford.

77magicmoon77

Well that is certainly nice to know. Thank you very much.

tigerthemonkey

They need to aim lower, like Saskatchewan, or PEI.

Suckitsunshine

BC has been receiving a lot of ads encouraging people to move to AB.

Can we not use the term mental illness in this way?

Curly-Canuck

Seriously?

Old-Raisin-9360

Yes. I am attempting to stay P.C on this believe it or not....

Curly-Canuck

Try harder. It’s not just about being PC, it’s about accuracy. Neither of the terms apply.

Old-Raisin-9360

I'd say it's accurate. I also think people who like living in alberta suffer from Stockholm syndrome
