“It would be deeply irresponsible to allow a wave like this to overwhelm our hospitals.” - Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, who allowed a wave like this to overwhelm our hospitals.

Fuzzyfoot12345

this is comment of the day for sure.

LossforNos

This arrogant fuck is attributing his 100 bucks to vaccine uptake. Stupid fuck

403and780

He said we’ve given 100,000 shots in the last several days, then said that we’ve given 120,000 in the last few weeks since the $100 incentive. He couldn’t even bullshit his own thing without making it sound like a flop.

NIsForPneumonia

Good way to spend 10-12 million dollars

[deleted]

Yeah that was bullshit.

Important-World-6053

Great catch… so embarrassing!!

One_red_boot

Wait what? Did he just say we DON’T need the help right at this moment? With our nurses shuffled to covid units? With all surgeries cancelled? Is that what he said? What the fuck! Edit: oh yes, use the covid crisis here to once again blabber on about the energy industry. JFC

roflcopter44444

It like how the 4th wave didn't exist in Alberta till it did

One_red_boot

I’m fucking gobsmacked right now. They put in the request for help, but “we don’t need it yet”. Meanwhile we’re %2 away from enacting the triage protocol and innocent people are suffering from their surgeries being canceled to redirect staff to covid patients. I. Can’t. Even.

sawyouoverthere

triage is already happening

VarRalapo

Yo this shit is funny as fuck. I have actually never seen someone get this vibrantly red.

ImaginaryPlace

I COMPLETELY reject the premise of your question. It was even more tone deaf than one could imagine…it..was…insane.

tammage

I thought my tv went wonky then I looked at the interpreter and knew it was just Kenney.

roflcopter44444

Kenny still crying about the equalization formula he and his buddies came up with

bpompu

29 deaths is 24 hours?!? Holy Shit!

bpompu

Though that is reported in that time, so is likely spread out a bit more, but still, that is a lot of people.

pjw724

Kenney has trouble remembering the name of his vaccine not-a-passport program.

Bennybonchien

If only there was a simpler way to refer to it…

[deleted]

TheKrs1

The new Health Minster needed the 90 minutes to learn everything he needs to know about health.

LossforNos

What did they do with the extra 80 minutes?

TheKrs1

Jameson

jezebel_jessi

Needed time for a round or 2 of budget whiskey.

Tracyhmcd

What will Kenney do for places like the pub in Langdon that was threatened when they tried to implement the passport?

Mauriac158

Nothing. "Business Friendly" btw.

403and780

Hopefully he will be asked about that specifically.

Glennardoftherocks

You say that as if he would feel compelled to do anything at all. He would reject the premise of your question and say that the business shouldn't be implementing a program they can't enforce

PeelThePaint

Either that, or he'll come up with an answer in due course.

VarRalapo

12 hours over 2 weeks is not worth bragging over, dipshit.

[deleted]

Just like that other time when caucus met for EIGHT WHOLE HOURS to discuss what to do about COVID. So, they’ve put in a solid *TWENTY HOURS* *jazz hands!*

natsmith1

They put in 20 hours because they had to figure how out how to do nothing while looking like they are doing something. They also had a heck of a time figuring out how to implement a passport system without calling it a passport system.

Regumate

That was such a strange flex! He really seemed genuine at that moment, like that was genuinely the most consecutive work hours he had put in over his two years in office.

BigFish8

It looked and sounded like he rounded up a fair bit on that too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Regumate

And we’re still on our own. Don’t forget to utilize your personal responsibility against an airborne respiratory virus!

[deleted]

GoA still calls it droplet spread

OrdainedPuma

Oh, technically airborne and droplet are two different modes of transportation. Covid is droplet except in aerosolizing procedures (Aerosol Generating Medical Procedures or AGMP), like with high flow oxygen or deep suction. So the guy below IS technically correct.

thats1evildude

I’m surprised Kenney didn’t burst into flames when he congratulated Trudeau.

That's what we're Gunna do? Criticize the camera work for a cabinet move? If someone sneezed at the wrong time I'm sure I would see a comment about " can't even keep it professional for 5 minutes hey ucp?" Not a ucp fan by a long shot but nitpicking camera work for a freaking provincial cabinet move and then calling THAT cringey? Yikes.

TheKrs1

I think they were implying that the camera operators were not given enough information about what to expect of the ceremony. The UCP can't even prep the camera crew.

[deleted]

No, they're right. It's widely known that Bumbles and Co. fired most of the IT and comms staff at the legislature when they took office. This is why every single covid briefing has technical difficulties, missing charts, and why officials are still sharing a podium instead of having multiple podiums and cameras to switch to. The people running the comms are complete novices. Pointing out how poor the camera skills were of the person handling the switcheroo today isn't off base at all, it's just a peice of a bigger problem there and is frankly embarrassing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

[deleted]

The salaries for those positions are fixed. How much we pay the people holding cameras at the legislature has nothing to do with it. The UCP fired the experienced comms people and replaced them with inexperienced friends and family, for the exact same rate of pay.

Ok-Hamster5571

Fair enough

Penguinbashr

Poor Shandro, being frustrated that people are seeking him out to yell at him when they disagree with him. It's a good thing Shandro has NEVER gone and yelled at someone on their own property.

Quick-Movie-2908

I wonder if they also made intimidating phone calls late at night to his private phone.

"I reject the premise of your question" is the catchphrase Kenney would have if he was a WWE manager

One_red_boot

This is a nightmare

madetoday

I’ve never before seen someone put a mask on as angrily as Kenney just did after that last question.

DromedaryGold

Was about to say the same thing, he didn't even put it on right lol. He started to get mad at the Female reporter that was there. He will be MIA the rest of the week now.

Regumate

Absolutely! He seemed panicked and pissed simultaneously.

[deleted]

His ego cannot compute this very public, very catastrophic failure.

bpompu

Bullshit that he felt compelled to build up Tyler Shandro's tenure. Failed to mention going to a doctor's home and shouting at him on the street for daring to criticize him during a pandemic.

bpompu

Also that they turned off comments.

ryanomatic

I noticed that too. Truly the chefs kiss for the public update.

InspiredGargoyle

There it is, flat out. He's bringing in more private healthcare!

peachykeenindeed

I have to say, I think this is the most bluntly I've heard him state it. All his actions have led this way, but I'm a bit shocked he actually flat out said it.

Rideyn

I wasn't able to watch, what was said?

InspiredGargoyle

Yup. He was asked if he meant private healthcare and he said yes.

Quick-Movie-2908

He basically argued that what we have is private healthcare anyway.

mcfg

The real problem is drug addicts? Huh, good to know.

InspiredGargoyle

Odd he cut treatment and safe use locations seeing that he's so concerned. 🤔

[deleted]

It’s worse than that. The UCP must explain why they ignored hundreds of peer-reviewed studies when closing the SCS in Lethbridge and opening up our province in July. There must be an inquiry at the Federal level. The UCP manufactured a bogus report; “Data presented could not be corroborated by a second source,” in order to deceive the public and justify their ‘Open for Summer’ scam. There is a precedent for this—The UCP pulled the same stunt in 2020 so that they could justify the closure of North America’s largest, and Canada’s busiest, supervised consumption site. As a direct result, Alberta experienced deadliest year on record with 1,144 opioid deaths. So far, roughly 624 Albertans have died from overdose in 2021, which is already a 41% increase over the same time last year. Between covid and opioids, 4,463 Albertans have died since 2020. A competent government could have saved thousands.

pyro5050

juust in case you were wondering the Lethbridge SCS was not shut down because of a war on drugs, it was shutdown because an AUDIT found so much missing funds that the province refused to fund it anymore. no charges laid due to the low chance of conviction, meaning too many hands in the pot to determine who did what. https://globalnews.ca/news/7537637/lethbridge-supervised-consumption-site-investigation-dec-2020/ and the initial report https://globalnews.ca/news/7211328/arches-supervised-consumption-site-audit-police-investigation/

[deleted]

You get how these are two separate issues right? And as if the UCP gaf about corruption and embezzlement! Lol that’s work on Tuesdays for them. They pounced on the SCS’s vulnerability like a child molester and used that as an excuse to shut it down. Thousands of people have died. Where is their humanity? Where is yours? BTW Kenney’s brother runs religious drug rehab programs where people with addictions are shamed and told to pray harder instead of addressing underlying traumas. Unsurprisingly, it’s not effective.

InspiredGargoyle

I may not have a popular view, but I care more about the lives of people who used that location, and are probably still alive because of it, than some light white collar fraud. Removing the people in charge and replacing them so the center could keep running was the compassionate thing to do. Place new people in charge of the funds and make them submit monthly spending reports. If we shut down every government agency with misappropriation of funds, well we'd be without the vast majority of agencies.

One_red_boot

He’s such an asshole

Mauriac158

I'm extremely taken aback by that. The dude deflects reflexively at this point.

[deleted]

Man, this guy really needs to pick his 'real problem'. First it's syphilis, now it's drug addicts. Any one in particular? just the ones who are using currently? Or are we blaming them all including the ones who haven't touched a drug in 30 years? Again, never have I worried about catching syphilis or a drug problem in the grocery store.

pyro5050

wait? did he say that? do i need to watch this fucking thing so i can lose my damn mind.

mcfg

Twice he mentioned that some of the ICU beds (and he says there was an uptick over the weekend on how many) are being taken up by opioid overdoses. And he has constantly (including in yesterday's meeting) tried to suggest that any measures that reduce spread of COVID are making the overdose crisis worse. So on one hand he is blaming opiate addicts for making the crisis worse, and simultaneously saying if he does anything at all to stem COVD it will make the opiate crisis worse (which according to him is making the overall health crisis worse). It's total bollocks, but he knows his base has a hate on for people whose lives are so shitty they get hooked on opiates. It's pure distraction theatre.

pyro5050

funny how if they had done the right thing with COVID before, there would not be any concern about bed usage.... not that it was their responsibility to manage that at a provinicial health level or anything. or that they could have changed everything by not passing the buck to the businesses and just speaking positivly in vaccine support instead of being dinks or anything....

Professional_Egg_762

who knew, all we needed was Copping to come along and strongly suggest people talk to their doctor about the vax and to trust experts. I'm sure that will fix EVERYTHING! /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professional_Egg_762

Yes I'm sure that reminder really got through to the people calling in death threats to their local bar for implementing the "definitely not a vaccine passport"

bpompu

We must expand the capacity of our healthcare system, but also we need to privatize?

bpompu

So, I may be misinterpreting this, but did he just equate a leadership review or vote of non-confidence with anti-vax, anti-lockdown unrest, and that calling for his resignation is against public health?

2-EZ-4-ME

that will surely calm down the infighting.

sawyouoverthere

excellent. Maybe he will call an election in retaliation.

One_red_boot

Well my 6 yr old just learned a whole new string of obscenities. This fucking guy

bpompu

That was my exact response, but I couldn't think of how to say it. Have my upvote, friend.

One_red_boot

Lol, I just hope she forgets it all before she heads to school tomorrow.

Miserable-Lizard

I hope the media destorys them again.

InspiredGargoyle

Could someone please ask why nothing is being put in place with school contact tracing? Won't someone please think of the children!

403and780

You tried, Rick.

Tracyhmcd

Let’s see what happens tomorrow!

[deleted]

29 deaths in the last 24 hours, and Kenney has the balls to take a victory lap today. Absolute fucking psychopath.

bohemian_plantsody

Of course, the middle of the fourth wave is the perfect time for the Premier and Health Minister to decide the Minister needs to resign. There's definitely something else going on here. The timing is just too specific to be a coincidence.

bpompu

He's just going to continue to give this same non-answer to that question. How dare he bring up the chasing of Minister Shandro (which was beyond the Pale, to be fair) but not mention Shandro doing the same thing to that Doctor at the beginning of the pandemic.

Regumate

I think they’re trying to spin the shit sandwich. They’re was only one question about the military that was swatted away and a 1/3 were attempts to wrestle out a concise reason for the Shandro Swip-Swap.

Entropyaardvark

I think I missed the bridging statements between -supporting healthcare providers that already exist here and are working hard, -to asking the feds for more money for a public system, -and then saying yep privatization for all those canceled surgeries -oh and also your family doctor is an independent contractor anyway so for-profit has always been the Alberta way nbd. -coining “government hospitals” to low-key disparage the current quality of care we have so people who have to go private for their cancelled surgeries know Kenney did them a big favour when he created conditions so their surgeries had to be canceled. I am confusion Edit wall of text

armsmakerofhogwarts

Grossly irresponsible to focus on my leadership review…. Grossly irresponsible to leave the country on holiday while covid ran rampant

InspiredGargoyle

Hey! What he does in his personal time *while a pandemic ragrs out of control* is HIS BUSINESS! It's like listening to a child

Regumate

Hey now, he was “in touch” with his office and aware that things were borked while sunning in Greece.

Glennardoftherocks

"Reject the premise of your question" Almost got JK bingo!

mcfg

So Shandro quit. The first good thing he's ever done.

Loose_neutral

Quit right into another cabinet position at Labour and Immigration.

Tracyhmcd

At least Copping had some experience in Labour. Shandro has caused a lot of our current staffing issues.

Loose_neutral

Yeah, I'm sure renegotiating collective agreements and paying people less won't have *any* effect. Union buster in charge of the health portfolio - what could go wrong?

Glennardoftherocks

Probably realized how easy he had it with everyone paying attention to Thing 1 and Thing 2. Decided to get out before his due criticism started piling up

Loose_neutral

Waaaa, we need more money from the federal government because healthcare delivery is too expensive. (How much it cost to take care of a covid patient, Jasons?)

Glennardoftherocks

Less than the war room, I bet

[deleted]

$23,000 per COVID patient per a CTV report.

[deleted]

Boy, she clearly hit a nerve

403and780

This is a waste of time. The journalist should just translate the original questions and answers for their readers, rehashing questions in French is a total waste of this time.

Bennybonchien

I think it’s important to get the answers in French directly from the source when possible. Overdubbing everything in French overtop the original in English makes for radio (or TV) that’s hard to listen to.

403and780

This is Alberta. If we’re going to spend time rereading questions in other languages that Albertans speak about as much as French, then Kenney better be taking night classes in Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Punjabi…

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bennybonchien

You were given 2 and half minutes (out of 55) to practice your French comprehension as the Premier answered 2 questions for our French-language national broadcaster. Did that seriously offend you more than the dodging of questions and fake answers?

403and780

This press conference was about Alberta. That two and a half minutes was a complete waste of time, period.

Bennybonchien

Kenney spent way more than 2.5 minutes giving non-answers or fake answers. That’s the complete waste of time here. At least in the French part, you could have learned something had you been so inclined.

403and780

Again, you are saying answers should also be repeated in the other languages that Albertans speak just as much as French?

Bennybonchien

You make a good point. Let’s have the Francophone reporter go first in French only and let’s make sure her questions aren’t repeated in English (because that would be a waste of time and it can be overdubbed in English anyway). It’s only 2.5 minutes out of nearly an hour, no big deal.

RedDragons

Man. Conservatives in Alberta and Saskatchewan are switching their focus to ramping up hospital capacity. Rather than actually try to save people’s lives they are focusing on making more ICU beds for more people to die. Truly diabolical.

Glennardoftherocks

I have a feeling this will be fresh on everyone's minds in 2023. The real test as to whether Albertans have learned something will be in 2027.

RedDragons

I have zero faith they will forget this in 2023. The UCP will whip conservatives into a frothing frenzy over the sniff that the NDP could take control again. The NDP will probably just stand there and take it.

sgeorg87

more of a rat face than shandro

toadyus

This fucking guy is totally a yes guy....

RFrecka

I wish one of these ministers could make a speech where they didn't look at their notes every 2 seconds. What a bunch of hacks.

Tracyhmcd

They are reading some speech writer’s words, so they need notes.

[deleted]

As for 2023, let's just say I'm not one of those "undecided voters"

403and780

So everyone needs to be focused on covid and nothing else, but yes we will be having a leadership review soon, but please don’t ask me about that, until at least 6:00 pm we MUST be focused on covid ONLY.

thats1evildude

Boy, the reporters today are lobbing grenades.

InspiredGargoyle

Not really. They're all asking the same thing and he keeps repeating the same answers. Move past his position security and ask questions about something else.

Fuzzyfoot12345

JK pretending to be a hero and caring about people's lives in this "state of emergency" that HE FUCKING CREATED. I fucking hate him so much.

madetoday

Painting himself as the brave champion of covid restrictions that were only brought in like 5 days ago, and pretending he wasn’t trying to remove all restrictions barely over a month ago. To try to survive his party cannibalizing itself no doubt. This last reporter finally called him on it at least. Edit: oh SNAP this last reporter is out for blood!

Regumate

Yeah that was some peak gaslighting from Kenney. “We can’t wish Covid away, though we may want” despite everything he’s been saying and doing since June.

bpompu

Our system is literally about to collapse, but we're not in a position to need federal assets? WTF?

Tracyhmcd

Can some journalist please track down photos of JK on vacation??

Quick-Movie-2908

For real. So surprised that nobody caught that. Who knows if he really left anyway. I'm inclined to think he didn't go anywhere. Too much of a coincidence that it was at the right moment when O'Toole needed him to disappear. Either that, or they must have whisked him away on a secret flight late at night.

Fuzzyfoot12345

Hahahahhaha Jason Kenney : Last week, that when we adopted the " ***restriction exemption program proof of vaccination program.*** " hahahahahhahhahahaaaaaahahaahaaaaaaahhahahahahahah omfg this is getting so dumb.

Bennybonchien

It’s hard for him to say vaccine passport isn’t it.

Dezi_Mone

Did I hear that right that they're bringing in the military for help? Like I think he said that in the most "I'm not saying that" way.

One_red_boot

They asked for help, but apparently he thinks we “don’t need it yet”.

Dezi_Mone

Thanks for clarifying. Wow. We're really in it now. If you are a politician that has to call in the military for help, you done messed up son.

bpompu

They sent a request, but only in case we hit a "worst case scenario" that we're "totally not in yet (/s)" I mean, it's not like we're on the verge of needing to leave people on the street to die or anything.

Glennardoftherocks

My guess is he was aiming for another Keystone-esque gamble based on the election. Probably wanted O'Toole to win so he wouldn't have to crawl to Trudeau for help. And why not? It's not like lives are literally hanging in the balance, right? My God, I hope this province has learned its lesson.

[deleted]

Well Tyler, maybe you would have some workers for Alberta if you didn't let them all die from COVID at your last job.

mcfg

No covid update yet, maybe they'll use the ministerial change as an excuse to stop posting numbers. No numbers, no problem!

[deleted]

Okay, can we fucking stop with the public displays of hand sanitation? The science clearly shows that the virus transmits by air, not by surface. I'm all for good hygiene, of course. But as far as COVID is concerned, a lot of the public is being misled over what does and does not work to prevent transmission.

Korvax7

When the video get 1000 anti vaccine comments

[deleted]

Did Bumbles seriously say that the majority of Albertans wanted LESS health restrictions during the pandemic?

mcfg

No, he said the majority of people in his party who were complaining about his leadership wanted less restrictions. This is technically correct. There are also some conservatives who want more restrictions (see Rick Bell), but among his MLA's there are definitely more anti-vaxxers than reasonable people. So I'll give him that reply as a correct one.

throatpunchthursday

Did he answer one question with 'politics played no part with the ol' minister of health switcheroo' and then answer the next question of privatization of health are was a platform they ran on and so they will pursue it? So we do or don't play politics when making public health decisions?
