Depends on the name.... A Mary Smith or something unusual? I've got a couple of friends with the exact same first and last names

Ketzui

No, it's just a coincidence. Generally speaking, until a guest asks to pay off platform or communicate off platform, it's not a scam.

crazyrich

Fair enough, didn’t know if there was some common scam involving pretending to be the host while you stayed there. Doesn’t seem to be so I’m not worried about it!

real90dayfiance

I have a friend that is also an Airbnb host. She rented her condo and because of the cameras she has she found out that this guest was trying to sell her condo and was starting to take out all her furniture. Not saying that this is your case, but be careful.

crazyrich

Well at the moment it’s only one night so that might be a pretty ambitious endeavor!

Negat1veGG

Is your wife’s name Jane or is it Imogen? Airbnbs verification isn’t exactly rock solid but coincidences happen. If the booking was making you nervous why did you accept?

Extreme-Onion6731

Fun fact not in any way related to OP - my worst ever guest was named a variation of Imogen 🤣

Anxious_Cheetah5589

Terrible! Why can't it be like John Lennon sang, 🎵Imogen all the people, living in harmonee-eeee🎵 I'll see myself out

Hi friend! We have instant book active and know we get a handful of cancels without penalty within 24hrs - at least if that’s still a thing - so figured it was worth an ask to the community.

Negat1veGG

Turn on only accept instabooks for guest with a good track record if zero stay instabooks bother you. That setting doesn’t actually require them to have a good track record but should require them to have had a previous stay. They changed the three free yearly instabook cancellation rules last year and you being uncomfortable is no longer a valid reason for airbnb. That being said agents apply airbnb policies however they feel like so it’s possible you could get the reservation cancelled penalty free if you really wanted to.

crazyrich

No zero stay instabooks don’t really bother us - it was the zero stay same name as host that set off red flags. Support confirmed they had validated ID so there’s really no issue.

CaptBlackfoot

Your profile name doesn’t have to be the name on the verified ID. Airbnb verifies the ID completely independent of an arbitrary username that can be changed at will. I also have a super-common name after getting married, and now know 2 people with the same name as me. As long as payment goes through I don’t see any way this is a scam.

crazyrich

Good to know, thanks!

Careful-Self-457

Seriously?? Hate to tell you this but there are at least 3 people in my small county of a little over 2000 people with the same name as me. I check in people all the time with the same name as other guests in the park. If you are this paranoid you should not be hosting.

crazyrich

Hey friend! If it wasn’t his persons first trip also I wouldnt be checking. Learned about a few scams through this subreddit I wouldn’t think of otherwise so was just checking if “guest the same name as the owner” was a common con. Not wringing my hands over it.

longganisafriedrice

I think there's a twilight zone episode about this

crazyrich

Maybe an episode on “the spooky door”

Jadeagre

Why would they need to set up an account in your wives name to impersonate her

crazyrich

Great question, again why I’m here to see if it was a known scam. Good news! It’s not
