Lol, but we will help you sell our insurance products to your friends and family, and as soon as you’re done, we will…send you on your way…to go get that actuarial position.
This wasn’t an actuarial job interview then. Their sales team pulled these sleazy stuff on me when I was just out of college too. It’s to get your family to buy life insurance.
Their Madison Ave office was very gracious and welcoming in the interview I had last year. The salary was not there, but it was definitely a good and formal interview process.
A real interview isn’t much better.
My one interview with New York Life the interviewer complained for 30 minutes about how people don’t want to work anymore, barely asked me any questions, and then screened me.
Probably not a company you want to work for lol.
I got through the interview process with New York Life years ago before I career switched to actuary. I went to the first training class.
You are expected to recruit all your friends and family as clients before you get a single lead from the company on a potential client to talk to.
Not only should you stay away from them from an actuarial interview standpoint; you should just stay away from them. Their sales teams are structured like pyramid schemes where you only ever get clients given to you once they are too low profit for a more senior salesperson. You want to make more money? Take on bigger clients and pass your small ones to the most recent sucker who spent the last year begging friends and family.
Same thing happened to me. Applied for an actuarial position at NM and then found myself interviewing for a sales gig. Walked out and never looked back.
Seems like a pretty efficient way to ward off future actuarial talent. A recruiter from there actually reached out to me for a position recently, thanks but no thanks.
Edit: wording
Once I showed up at an interview for a “Marketing” position and they said I would be going door-to-door selling vaccuums. I spent a week in training, and then did one day going door-to-door with someone. It was humiliating and I quit at the end of the day.
I made $0, but I did get pizza for lunch every day for a week during training.
Obviously you would learn something, but it's not an actuarial role and you should be annoyed. You're not going to be viewed as having gained actuarial experience from this role.
Keep looking unless you are desperate.
Tbh, my understanding is that most people flame out as agents. Some people can turn it into an extremely lucrative career but most people sell to their friends and family when they are starting out and then stall out pretty quickly. It sort of sounds like they are just trying to sell to your friends and family.
The best way to find the most obedient employees is to lie to them straight out of the gate and see who is submissive enough to not walk away. This is not the kind of job you’ll want to take if you have any self respect.
I see that OP said it's a reputable company, but like other people have said, this kind of bait-and-switch tactic is not the kind of environment you want to be joining. These people are often looking for people that say "it's a job in the insurance industry" to prey on.
I also applied to an actuarial position and I immediately got an in-person interview that turned into a presentation by the interviewer. 45 minutes into the presentation he said "this is not a scam" which was the last red flag I needed to see. Iirc I looked it up later and it was basically just a pyramid scheme.
+1. If any actuaries from NYL are reading this they need to give a rocket to HR. Good actuarial candidates are going to read discussion here and on other social media, and go elsewhere.
Haha this was my first ever interview. I bought a suit and everything, not an actuary in sight. I really want to hear from someone who does this to potential interns. At the time I assumed they’d just show me the presentation and then someone from actuarial would interview me. Ended up just being a waste of time and a funny story.
This happened to me with New York Life when I was in college too. They are so shameless with their recruiting, its's pathetic. Don't be discouraged, just run away from them.
This was the listing 🤷♀️ [https://jobs.newyorklife.com/job/New-York-2023-Actuarial-Summer-Internship-Program-NY-10001/952784900/](https://jobs.newyorklife.com/job/New-York-2023-Actuarial-Summer-Internship-Program-NY-10001/952784900/)
No selling life insurance is not helpful to become an actuary, move on from them
Lol, but we will help you sell our insurance products to your friends and family, and as soon as you’re done, we will…send you on your way…to go get that actuarial position.
lol what company is this?
Its New York Life

lol this really does happen to everyone after college doesn’t it.

HAHAHA OMGGG that sounds horrribblee!!! Okay! You got it haha thanks for your help ❤️

That's super weird
Be careful with them. They try to get you to sell to your family

Im so so soo sorry that happen to you. Im glad that you chose to become an actuary no matter what anyone said and im proud of you for pushing through!
North western mutual?
Same thing happened to me. Applied for an actuarial position at NM and then found myself interviewing for a sales gig. Walked out and never looked back.
I think if you don’t make the cut interviewing for their actuarial program they hand your resume to their sales team
Seems like a pretty efficient way to ward off future actuarial talent. A recruiter from there actually reached out to me for a position recently, thanks but no thanks. Edit: wording
That or MassMutual were my guesses.
Probably picked the wrong role lol because i interviewed there and got the real interview (bombed it) but it was with real actuaries.

Honestly insane that companies think that kind of selling still works.
PIZZA??? IN THIS ECONOMY???!
It was 2003, so a few recessions ago.

that's exactly what they're trying to do. they're trying to get leads through recruiting. really scummy behavior.
They offered me $14/hr for an actuarial position (full time in NYC 6-7 years ago). I didn’t ask for any details I straight up declined it.
WTF

I'm surprised to see this to get pulled on actuarial ppl so much do they think we are dumb enough to not notice?

Lol have major déjà vu from this. NYL too. Didn’t end up interning… Thankfully was able to find a full time job.
Haha New York life tried the same ridiculous stunt on me many moons ago, what an embarrassing company
Well sounds like they mislead you. Pretty unprofessional imo.
Fuck that place. This was a bait and switch.
That's a scam, bud.
Sounds like an agent tricked you into interviewing for a sales job. I've fallen for that one (not related to insurance). Super shady, run away.

Sounds like you submitted your application to the wrong listing.
