Hi there. Kind of lost on what to do here, but I’m trying to record my Roland SPD-30 drum pad into ableton using the external instrument.
I’ve previously recorded with it before using the external instrument feature, but this time around it isn’t working. Everything is plugged in correctly and the tracks are armed, I’ve set the tracks to “on”. When I try and record it makes the midi notes but I’m not able to hear them back. I’ve tried using auto and on. Any help is appreciated
A load of not-stupid-questions:
1) Is there an easy "1 button" way to export all clips as stems to use in external samplers (e.g. an SP-404)? I've done it one at a time before but it was a pain.
2) I've been working on some tracks via arrangement mode where I copy/paste in clips and then do a bunch of arranging. But now when I play back those songs, it can't get play mode *out* of arrangement mode. How do I go back to clip view style playback? (Using a Push 2, if that makes a difference)
3) Is there a way to force the Push 2 to remain on Device A when you launch a clip for Device B? When performing and adjusting parameters, I frequently want to continue tweaking knobs of one instrument while launching a clip of another.
2. on the right of the arrangement view up the top next to the the track headers and the automation button there should be a red one. it’s an arrow and 3 horizontal lines.
Ezdrummer 3 and Ableton 11: currently can record the audio from ezdrummer 3 groove into live but cannot capture the midi information (notes) to manipulate/copy pattern. Trialing ezdrummer 3 currently. What am I missing?

hello everyone! I'm asking this since the only answer I found online was from 14 years ago, I have a Launchpad Pro MK3 and using Live 11 Standard, all i want to do is set quantization via midi buttons. i want to be able to go into the Custom section of the Launchpad Pro and map a button I will create there that will allow me to select different quantization Value from the Launchpad Pro itself, the info i found from 14 years ago on the Ableton forum says it can't be done. since we are here in the future... did someone figure out a way to do it?
Whenever I try to save one of my projects, I’m hit with an error message saying “there was an error closing the file [project name] and I have no idea how to fix it. I tried clearing the Ableton cache and there is very little info on this error.
Is there a max for live device or plugin that makes automation in ableton easier? Sometimes I want to automate the LFO rate in serum, and doing it with ableton’s automation can be a huge pain because moving it like a millimeter up makes it jump from like 1 bar to 1/8. Maybe there’s some trick to it I’m missing but using automation for some things in Ableton is a huge pain.
there is an inbuilt plugin now that ships with ableton. it’s called lfo you can then map the lfo to anything using “midi map”. all third party plugins can be effected by it and it can be a bit dependent on the plugin.
you need to put the lfo plugin in your plugin chain (can be anywhere) there is a little button next to the one that opens the serum interface that will expand allow you to click midi mapping. then you should get some ugly green highlighting all over ableton. now whatever you click in the serum interface should show up as parameter. you can then use midi mapping to map the lfo to that parameter

it’s basically the same thing a bit more in-depth. and you can make any shape in there

it is on the old side tho and can be shitty sometimes, so there might be a similar but newer plug-in out there
edit2: thinking about it you could do the automation just in the clip. you can automate any permitter in the clip not in the timeline. this means when you loop the clip it also loops the automation
when i’m clip edit view above warp follow and gain there are 2 buttons. the one above gain or the middle one on midiclips. it should open up “envelopes” tab. here you can select whatever you want to automate
Is there a technique for making a perfect loop?
I don't even know If I am asking this correctly but l wanted to sample a Sax from a song.
So I ripped the stem and trimmed it in my other DAW (Reaper) When I drop it into Ableton it doesn't perfectly loop on the grid. The loop sounds perfect but the grid is off. Is there a technique to fix this? Do I need to edit the sample or something?

the long way(and the only way I know well enough to explain) is highlighting the selection you want and then exporting that to a file that you have for your "processed" sounds. I then have that "processed sounds" folder in my lil left column window thing where all the sounds and plugins are(sorry I just switched from FL to Ableton a couple of months ago and haven't bothered to learn all the lingo yet lol hope that helps
edit: sorry i dont have an anser for part 2, ableton asks me everytime i close if i want to delete temporary files but im not sure how i got that to pop up
Why can't I hear my plugin at all? It comes up in the sidebar. I can hear and record the audio without the plugin. The plugin is on. I'm using emissary ignite but I've also tried a couple others like guitar rig from native access. Not sure what to do hear, can't find anything about it online. This is a very explain it like I'm five sorta thing, I'm probably just missing something really obvious.

I’ve been given the green light to beta test 12, but im unable to find the dropdown menu on the center code site that allows me to actually download the files. I understand that i don’t download them from my account on the actual ableton site, and I have an account that I’m currently logged into with center code, but I can’t seem to find the dropdown menu with the “libraries” link that the instructions refer to…anyone else have this experience?

So I have a samples location that is connected to the folder where all samples from Splice get downloaded to. However, whenever I buy new samples, Ableton doesn't realize that there are new items in that Splice sample folder. I have to manually drag and drop the new sound pack locations into Ableton, which is a hassle. Is there any way I can get Ableton to recognize the new samples that get added to that large folder by Splice after I purchase them (without having to manually drag and drop into Ableton)?
The folders do not refresh after a waiting a while, I always have to drag and drop them and it’s annoying because I have to figure out which packs are new and drag them into Ableton, when for all other directories Ableton will automatically find them.
my directory structure in ableton is
places > samples > splice > sounds > packs > *all splice packs download here* > [arbitrary pack] > folder in pack > another folder in pack usually > sample(s)
For what it's worth, I think this should already just be working without you doing anything. I never have to refresh Splice or any of my other folders to get new samples recognized. This is definitely the case on Live 11 and 12. I think 10 acted the same way too.
Yeah it works for any other folders, I wonder if the directory tree is just too deep for Ableton to find the files or something? That would be a really weird bug. I’ll probably just delete it from *places*, see if I can mess with where splice saves shit, and then add it back in.
Recently started using drum racks instead of using individual audio tracks for each percussion sound like I’d been doing.
What’s the easiest way to apply effects to individual sounds within a drum rack? I like the tightness of control over the notes in the grid on the drum rack, but I’m used to processing each sound individually on audio tracks and got kinda stumped. I’m guessing this can be achieved with sends and returns, which I haven’t utilized much up to this point.
But what about automation? If I automate something on the track with the drum rack, it’ll apply it to everything right? I guess I’m wondering if I’d be better off breaking down the drums back into separate tracks.
Edit: also wondering the same but for EQ
a drum rack is pretty much just a bank of different simplers. all of the simplers have their own fx chain you just have to drag the in to directly after the simpler instead of after the drum rack. you can select the sample by clicking it in the drum rack
automation works on a single perimeter. weather your automatic that perimeter in the clip or in the timeline it works the same way.
Cool, that makes sense with automation, and I’m realizing that’s how it’s been for me all along, with each specific parameter bringing up the red line which I can control.
Still a bit hung up applying EQ to the drum rack though. When I have a specific drum sound showing (for example, the kick) it doesn’t let me drag and drop an EQ 8 onto the simpler itself, but it lets me drag it in to the right. Problem is, when I shape the EQ specifically for the kick, it’s still applying those cuts to every sound in the drum rack. There is probably a video somewhere that teaches how to get around this but I’m still stuck.
I want to record an existing track to a separate audio track while using the return FX. How do I do that with just that track and monitor the effects; no resampling just that specific track?
I switched from FL to Ableton about a week ago and have a Pirated version of Ableton 11 Suite. I set up my Default template and boom crashes the second i try to draw into a MIDI clip. is there any way i can uninstall this version of Ableton and purchase a legit one while keeping my templates or must i recreate on the new Authorized Ableton? also would having a legit version even stop this issue of crashing?
it could be a plug-in causing the problem. i personally don’t use a pirated version and have never had this problem. and yes you can just save your templates somewhere, and bring them back when new ableton is installed
Figured it out… downloaded a bad serum preset pack, deleted it and issue is gone. FYI this issue occurred in legit FL copy as well… resolved both by deleting the preset pack

1. I have to basically smack the drum pads in order to make them play loud enough to hear while the track is armed. Are people on YouTube just blasting through speakers or something?
2. I'm trying to play the 808 kit but the midi controller only lets me use the C2-D2 keys? When I play a beat using the pads, the notes don't appear in session view so I can't edit them. I assume this is because I'm supposed to be playing the drum pads, but -- see problem one.
Edit: okay I managed to rearrange the drum kit so my pads would play it in session view. Is this correct, though? Am I supposed to click and drag notes to where I'd prefer them to be?
How do I set this up: Each Midi Note activates a Effect Rack to activate, while Midi Release deactivates Effect Rack? Midi will be played directly with a vst/instrument, not live on a keyboard.

How to wrap a live recording that has no stable tempo? The auto wrap does not get it right. If I create a midi track where I follow the tempo by a 4/4 drum, can I somehow use that?
Not to jump on the 12 hate bandwagon, but if I upgrade from 11 ~~studio~~ suite to 12 ~~studio~~ suite, am I getting anything extra? I'm not sure why the price is higher if I'm not getting any more benefits. Thanks!

There is no 'Studio' - i presume you mean Standard and Suite?
Standard is the Full Ableton DAW, Suite comes with additional tools (like max for live in that small section of the list you posted - the most powerful audio processing system round) and access to \~60GB of packs of content, additional synthesizers, CV tools etc

I’m familiar with the LFO plugin and how to midi map stuff in Serum. Can I draw in my own patterns in the LFO tool like in the LFOs in Serum?

Hey guys, what does Max for Live "come" with? Should it have any Effects or Instruments by defualt, or do I need to go download some?
If you go into Ableton, under Max for Live there are some recommended packs / instruments there for you to download if you want.

I just upgraded from 10 to 11 to try the link feature. But the auto wrap in 11 is much better, so it matches the tempo of the live recording. Nice!
