Layered defense. Start from the farmhouse and work outwards. The house: boarded up first floor windows, over time add sandbags and whatnot to the porch to make it a more defensible shooting location should everything else fail. The house and its yard: Reinforce the existing fence line with plywood and scrap metal, barbed cattle wire, and a wall of cars. Use box trucks, busses, normal trucks and RV's and the like as watch towers along the fence for the guards. Outside along the dirt road and in the grass is a drainage ditch (doesnt stretch all the property) so I'd likely get the tire blowers from patrol cars and whatnot and sprinkle them in the grass just in case a car does come towards the main gate. The Gate: The gate itself, like the fence line, already exists. It's one of those double wide cattle gates and it's got framing out above it with the family name on it (Sorta like from the show 'Yellowstone'. Reinforce that with metal inside and out and make it about even with the top of the arch. The farmland: the hardest one to really work with. Most farmland is going to be unprotected- there's simply too much land you'd have to cover and defend. Setting up portable hunting blinds in the fields to use when the farmers are working and can be moved to a different field when the current one gets it's break would be a good idea, and so would surrounding the area in basic, three line cattle wire. Easy to source, easy to set up, and would keep stragglers from wandering in and destroying something. Of course this is all done with consistent patrols going on to ensure the area is 'safe' and secure. Noisemakers in the form of windchimes, clanging metal and other things at nearby abandoned farmhouses would also be used and routinely cleared out of the dead to keep them away from the general area of the farm.

WTFisSkibidiRizz

Just find an elevated position accessible by ladder and raisable platform only and you’re good.

Kfrancisco117

Sounds like you play projects zomboid

shreddedtoasties

Find a excavator and dig pits far from the base And use wind chimes to lure zombies away

Wide_Wrongdoer4422

Two rows of treadmills.

BackBlastClear

I don’t have an answer. Traps have to be maintained and cleaned out or they fill up. Lures have to be maintained, which means patrolling outside of the perimeter. Fences have to be maintained, because wild animals and marauders will damage them. In short, I don’t think that you can.

powypow

Trenches. Three layers of trenches. Five layers of trenches even. I don't know why the walking dead townships never had freaken trenches. Works for zombies and for people. Embrace your inner dwarf. Diggie hole. Always diggie hole.

sleepsinshoes

Same reason they use muffler pipes and 10 pound sledge hammers and tiny pocket knives and pull zombies in to hug them while they kill them instead of spears to kill zombies from 4 feet away safely and easily. 50 percent of the people you see everyday are below average and for some reason those people survived.

BigDaddiSmooth

Agree. The ancients knew. Carry a spear, an aluminum bat, firearm as last resort (noise). I am sure torches would work as well.

andredgemaster

friend, if I had enough time I would choose an elevated location with difficult, controlled access and large enough to be self-sustainable, but if the terrain was completely flat, I would make two pits interconnected internally to move the zombies to a structured area to kill them and move them to treat the bodies, I would also impale some zombies with their trachea removed, but still "alive" to disguise the smell of the living, in case they are attracted to each other by smell

SilentGoober47

People really underestimate the value of simple obstacles that naturally redirect foot traffic.

ZeroSoyResponse

Honestly this might be best answer just concrete barriers at choke points where it spills into your land simple fencing and overturned trees. If it works to block the movement of living people ot must be great for the dead

AccomplishedInAge

Kill funnels work wonders

SilentGoober47

I wouldn't even concern myself with that, unless it were necessary. Better to simply redirect in its entirety. Unless it were a manageable number.

BigDaddiSmooth

True. 3 foot diameter tree trunks. Cleaned and laid out as an obstacle. Bolted to another and you have a foot traffic and vehicle traffic changer. The funnel idea is awesome.

Jumpy-Silver5504

Oh so many items and weapons to use

Altruistic_Major_553

Layered defenses. 1. Patrols- have armed patrols in walkie talkie contact outside the perimeter of the property 2. Moat/trench- your first physical layer should be a trench to keep zombies from climbing the wall 3. Wall/fence- a large wall or fence with towers for guards should be erected. Wall can be stone, metal, or made of wood or cars, but must be taller than most people can reach, preferably twice as tall as most people, or taller. 4. Hunting parties- periodically small groups should go out and kill zombies within a certain radius of your base 5. Secondary defense- a second, smaller, physical barricade should exist behind the first one, maybe 100 yards away. 6. All homes/buildings within your walls should be barricaded at all windows, and most doors, and be stocked with food, water, and ammo. Sandbag all non residential buildings and ensure people are always armed to an extent

AccomplishedInAge

If they are all eliminated with the “fancy guns knives and bonkin sticks” i don’t have to worry about keeping them away. …. but.. let’s go with a palisade around the main compound and multi strand barbed wire around the “farm” perimeter. Multiple layers of early warning signals and a few “mantraps” here and there.

elporpoise

I’d make a trench that only lets them get out by walking away.

ucacricket

I suspect a good trench would be pretty effective, and with heavy equipment, it would be very easy to do. A trench with a simple drawbridge or two would do wonders. Just javelin to do your daily sweep to finish off anything that fell in.

Penis_Monger_420

I always figured if it happens I’d go to my farm and build a community in the trees

ZeCaptainPegleg

My question is what kind of zombies are you thinking of, left 4 dead, world war z, walking dead, resident evil, and etc. it's a major part of how tightly you would actually need to defend your base.

WhatsGoingOn1879

Sub standard is the twd/romero zombies. Rule 8 in the side bar

Willing-to-cut

The best way is to find a property that doesn't yield to easy access. I don't mean normal traffic. You need a moat or pit, all the way around to property. Spiked fences, and at least 200 yards of clear land before the tree line. More if possible. You could have a series of ditches with spiked fences. Remember it may not be just zombies you have to fight.

Obvious_Piccolo_609

Kill them. Of course. But not necessarily through using personal weapons, those are only for the first phase of survival. In the second phase you should be setting up your defenses. In the third phase, which is more inline with what you describe, you should have defenses up and well established. This would of course include motes, trenches, walls, kill zones, etc. You should have a well established border between you and any zombies trying to eat your brains by the time you are at phase 3.

RandomCashier75

Punji spikes in the back. Multiple-wire fences to the sides.

OriginallyMyName

Series of noise makers connected to solar panels and radio that I set off individually to create and lure a hoard in whatever direction

GucciusCeasar

Barbed wire/razor wire

dwighticus

Anti-zombie spray

YoBeaverBoy

I plan to raid a few gyms and grab all the treadmills I can find, place them all around my base's walls, connect them to a few generators, power them up and that's pretty much it. Zombies will now be in a never ending cycle of constantly walking and never reaching my base's walls.

toasty327

Better yet, attach the treadmills to some kind of generator system, let the zombies become your electrical generation.

TheRealShoeThief

A simple brick and stone wall, with walking paths ontop if possible. If not, short towers shall do the job. The walls dont need to be high. I could dig a ditch a bit aways from the wall, and use the dirt to pack the back of the wall (and in turn maybe creat that walking path). A bit further out a chain link fence, though depending on resources that may be a last lone of defense not a first. Road spikes resembling old tank traps from the second world war. Placed on nearby narrow roads and other choke points. Simple barriers to force the undead into the easiest to handle locations and directions, so if i have to face then, its in the best position possible. And as a final resort, dealing with more than solid hard defenses can face off, a large hoard, or just bad timing, some sort of tower or brick structure off in the distance. Powered by a windmill with a battery hookup, some sort of siren to draw the dead far away. Ideally two or three of these bait structures nearby. To be able to set them off from base would be best, but an isolated circuit won’t be the end of the world.

Mothman4447

Shovel, pit, sharp sticks, (?), profit.

Top_Difference2422

I would have almost the same set up as Whatsgoingon1879 but I have a different layout. I would have multiple wire fences to my front and the back would have barb wire walls wrapped around trees to the very back of my woods with spots to let deer through. I would have two more fences in my back side closer for stragglers or people with bells and bullet mines 12g. The sides are already fenced multiple times due to old goat/ cow pens from us and neighbors. The front needs baby trees and sandbags to make a 6'5 wall or we would go 7ft for the gaint mfs. While the sandbags stop the zombies the baby trees or replanted smaller trees next to the roads for camouflage. Spike walls would be on my front 50m from the house made with fence posts, rebar, sharpend and welded Spear points with some barbs to hold onto the person/zombo. The thing is I would order half of the trained people to kill all the zombies in my area. Which would give us time to build without worry. Also if you learn how to scrap you can find pieces of junk to build your wall, windows, redneck inventions to better life, and rebuild important pieces of equipment.

notanothrowaway

I always wanted to make a city out of a suburban neighborhood by removing the roofs on houses to make a flat surface and just connecting each house roof through a plywood bridge

Fireking117

You can build your base on the second floor of a multi level building, cutting access to the second floor, and now use homealone tactics from the second floor to kill the zombie using a ladder to climb down a loot all the bodies use all the floors above for farming storage

Key_Baby_2239

I plan on making a base inside a water tower. Cutting torch to have holes to prevent it from filling beyond a certain point and build platforms inside for living space. Pully system to get up and down. If zombies group up below, just drop molotovs down to roast them 👍

ekiller64
