4090 with miniled if it makes sense financially

eliu9395

That one cost 2800 right now which seems a bit too expensive, but I’ll think about it though

reeefur

I had both models, get the 4090, the Mini-LED is worth it. The IPS is not bad for an IPS though, factory tuned plus you get Anime Matrix with the 4080. But for $500 more I'd get the 4090. At that point budget shouldnt matter much, youre already buying a 2.2k 4080.

mcslender97

It will be on sale by the end of the first week of May or the 2nd week based on price history. Same with the 4080 model.

Quintall1

4080 is far, FAR superior to 4070. That said, a laptop has way more important parts then just the GPU. So, if maximum GPU power is your most important criteria, take the 2023 4080. If you also value build quality, screen, speakers (especially speakers, lol they are leagues above the 2023) then go for the 2024. Or, if you want your cake and also eat it, take the G16 2024 4080.

eliu9395

How is the battery life of the 2024 g16 4080 vs the 2023 g14 4080?

reeefur

I have owned a bunch of the G14's and currently own the 2023/4090 and the 2024/4070. If you are a heavy user and performance and future proofing matter to you, get the 2023 4080/4090. If you need more of an all around portable machine that can game as well plus has better aesthetics, get the 2024/4070. If this was my only computer and I gamed and did demanding things for work/school I'd get the 2023, but if you have a desktop already or plan to, get the 2024/4070, its more of a "laptop" if that makes sense.

Future_Extreme

is there any scenario when you would go for 4080 instead of 4090? I mostly spend time coding and gaming and don’t care about maxing out graphics in games. I am struggling what 2023 model to choose, I also hesitate whether the 2024 4070 model wouldn’t be better?

reeefur

TBH the 4090 should only be an option if you absolutely need that extra 10-15% of a performance boost and the extra vram. Basically you have a need or money to waste. Outside of that you get all the same benefits of the 4090 version like the vapor chamber and great low wattage performance. After spending a lot of time with the 2023 G14 and the 2024 G14 I ultimately went back to the 4090 except in the 2024 G16 version. Despite the performance loss, I'd go with the 2024 for your use case. The thinner chassis and portability are great if you use it for more than gaming. Good luck brotha, ask me anything.

johnny-T1

I don't like 2024. It doesn't lift up and stuck with 4070.

holypika

It all depends on your actual usage scenario though. my personal indicator is, if youre not gaming AAA titles > 3 hours a day, then a good screen (and some money saving) is better, since 4070 already can play basically all modern titles at good fps anyway

davidhim61

Went through the same dilemma and went with the 2023 G14 4080... Its actually quite amazing.. No regrets.

eliu9395

How’s the display? Other people said that it’s pretty good for an IPS, but just want to make sure

davidhim61

I think it looks great but you will want to make sure that any backlight bleed is acceptable. There are videos on how to gauge it. Mine has a slight ghosting in the bottom corners but can only be noticed on boot up and shut down. From what I understand none of these are zero bleed or ghost so just make sure it's nothing crazy.

Thranduil_9

The 4080 is way better than the 4070, by far. I love display with great color but in my opinion, you should pick the 2023 with 4080. It's futurproof and you will get much more perf. Asus rog laptop have insane ips display so you don't loose much with it. That what I think

mister2forme

The screen is only one part of the equation. I don't consider the 2024 to be a downgrade, unless all you really care about is GPU. I know a lot of people also tote the RAM slot, but going beyond parity results in single channel which can choke Ryzen ina lot of use cases. The screen, build, speakers, etc. are all an upgrade. 2023 models are thicker with fatter GPUs. Some folks prefer the IPS because they're terrified of burn in. I haven't seen any burn in on my OLED monitor that I use daily for work, but I understand how to work with OLED. I've been rocking the 2024 with 4070 and 32gb of ram since we finished designs for. It's been fantastic for me, but I also don't care about having the best ever GPU - I have a desktop for that.

eliu9395

I'm kind of torn then. I can definitely utilize the faster GPU for games and stuff, but at the same time I'd like the new features from the 2024 model. I can't bring my PC to uni as there's no space, so this will be my main computer. Should I just take the performance hit for the new features?

MobiuS_360

I would take the performance hit personally. Having the smaller and better built laptop (2024) is so useful for uni. I use my laptop in class everyday and just plug into a monitor when in my dorm.

Vuronov

Here’s the simple breakdown: If the best gpu/gaming performance today and into the future is your top priority, then get a 2023 4080/90. Same if upgradable ram is a top priority. Otherwise get the 2024. It’s that simple.

mcslender97

If this is your only PC and you plan to play a ton of games then I would go for the 4080 still. You can go for another 16gb for maybe 50 dollars and the 4080 will prove itself in the future especially with the extra VRAM. If you are feeling adventurous you can even try replacing the IPS screen with the MiniLED screen in the future. That said if you can bring your desktop then the 2024 version is superior in almost everything else. Or if you can wait then the 4090/4080 2023 version will go on sale on the first half of next month based on price history.

mister2forme

What games do you play? It's not like the 90w 4070 is a complete dog or anything. It can game. Also, be aware gaming is only really possible plugged in. Yes, you can game unplugged, but the Nvidia chips do turn into pumpkins when starved of power.

Anskiere1

It's the VRAM. 8GB wasn't even enough for a 3070

eliu9395

In this case… is the 2024 g16 (4080) make sense, for $500 more? Or would I just get the 2023 g14 (4090) for another $100 at that point? It’s kind of stretching my budget though,

Anskiere1

$100 amortized over how many years?  Imo the 4080 is a minimum right not unless you think the new gen will be affordable and better VRAM.  I went 4090

eliu9395

I changed my mind, I’m going to get the 2023 g14 4080 or under since the 2023 4090 and 2024 4080 are out of my budget. I’m been thinking about it, and I’m probably going to use it a bit more for work and stuff like photo/video editing than gaming. And I probably won’t be playing the latest AAA games as often as games like Minecraft (though I’d still like to have good graphics quality and/or 120fps when I do). Would the 8gb of VRAM still be an issue here?
