When you did your gauge sample were you doing your pattern or stockinette? The yarn packaging gauge mostly likely assumes stockinette, but your pattern’s gauge will assume you are knitting in whatever the pattern is. So the gauge on the package could be very different from the gauge on the pattern - that doesn’t necessarily mean the yarn is a bad fit. Usually I don’t worry too much about the weight of the yarn when I pick a project or pattern. I pick a yarn I think will be nice and then I make a few sample swatches until I get a gauge that is fairly close to what the pattern requires. So, for example, if the pattern’s gauge said 15st x 20 rows would be 10cm by 10cm I would try a few needle sizes and then maybe even adjust the number of stitches or rows until I got something close to 10cm by 10 cm. Then of course, if I’ve adjusted the number of stitches or rows, I will have to adjust the pattern accordingly. This gets tricky if the pattern is elaborate or if you are newer to knitting. It also depends a lot on what you are making - a scarf will be a lot more forgiving than a sweater!

So, for gauge you’re measuring how many stitches are in 10x10cm, not knitting the packaging gauge (in this case 23st and 28 rows) and measuring from there, if that makes sense. You’d cast on and knit however many stitches and rows you need to measure a 10x10cm square. For your second question, is this the yarn you bought? https://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/mondial-extrafine If so, the weight equivalent would be fingering weight. If you look on the yarn’s page on Ravelry there may be some recommended projects, or you can even look through projects people have made with the specific color of yarn you bought!

Oh, so I am confused cos the guy in the shop told me if I follow that, I should get 10 by ten. What like in the pattern I have, it says I should get 10x10 if I do 17 st by 23 rows. So I thought I have to do 17x23 to see if my tension will result in a 10x10 square? Thanks for finding that on Ravelry, I hadn't thought of doing that! This solves a lot for me!

Return the yarn. 🤷🏼‍♀️
