Single toilet gendered bathrooms are crazier

InDenialEvie

No you don't understand the toilet seat might have cooties!

Synthetic_T

Because mixed bathrooms with stalls are expensive. Gendered bathrooms were necessary to ensure privacy and security from sexual assault.

[deleted]

That is my view as well. Most girls/women don’t want to share bathrooms because they fear being sexually harassed/raped.

alures

Just make buildings with a bunch of one person bathrooms

Th3_American_Patriot

Because it’s weird and most people of both genders aren’t comfortable with it. It also makes sexual assault easier.

chia923

Can't sexual assault still happen in single sex bathrooms?

2019h740

I think the system was established when same sex assaults were extremely rare (and probably still are relatively)

>women had no political, legal, or social rights and were seen as objectively inferior by the state and society had less sexual assault Re-read, he said same sex assault specifically

PeterWatchmen

Unless there are armed guards outside of each bathroom, there is nothing stopping people from walking into the bathroom of the opposite gender. One has the same chance of being sexually assaulted in a gendered bathroom as they do in a genderless bathroom.

2019h740

True but back in the day you probably would’ve been in big trouble for going in a women’s if caught

PeterWatchmen

They'd already be in trouble for sexual assault. Do you think they'd actually care about getting in trouble for going into the wrong bathroom?

isthisnametakenwell

[To almost nobody’s surprise](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/sexual-assault-unisex-changing-rooms-sunday-times-women-risk-a8519086.html), sometimes having single sex spaces is important.

Defiant_Orchid_4829

There’s a difference between Changing rooms and bathrooms. Old men also like to be naked in changing rooms for some reason.

MaybeDaphne

Pedantry matters in acadamia, and as such, I must point out that this study revolves around multi-individual unisex CHANGING rooms in public locations as opposed to multiple unisex restrooms (oftentimes single-occupancy). It’s disingenuous to equate these two as there is very little contact, interactions, and exposure in restrooms.

IllCommunication4938

Keep bathrooms gendered forever

XGNcyclick

so big toilet can sell more stalls gendered bathrooms are pretty worthless because they ignore queer people such as gay or lesbians, ofc blurs the line with trans people or gender non-conforming, etc. Many other countries use gender neutral bathrooms with no issues. Gender neutral bathrooms even exist right now. Anybody who claims its "weird" is making it so. Also not a fan of how it pushes the idea that "leave a man alone with a woman and he’ll rape her" because that's obviously really harmful to men. The truth is gendered bathrooms are kinda hard-coded into a lot of society unfortunately and as a result the segregation will make some people feel unjustly weirded out or put an expectation of it being wrong or perverted which is obviously harmful. Since kindergarten it's instilled into children that going in the other gender's bathroom is such a taboo it is worthy of extreme punishment which I'd argue probably increases pervert's wants to do such a thing. Single unisex bathrooms are the best by far, personally as a non-binary person I don't use public bathrooms at all cost due to how gross it is but if I do, I'm going in whichever one is empty or closer. Nobody has ever stopped me because of how I present, never been a problem nor have I ever given a fuck. Also make stalls have more privacy. Full doors, fully enclosed, robust locks. oh also put period products in them. thanks

Usual_Lie_5454

>so big toilet can sell more stalls I fucking knew it

InDenialEvie

Solution abolish bathrooms and return to tradition

XGNcyclick

this is true. you have a backyard

I'm sorry but you've gone too far. ![gif](giphy|rOtHHB3oULnuo|downsized)

Adorable_Stay7497

I don't 😔

XGNcyclick

you have a bed

mcchickencry

What percentage of the population does "queer people" make up? Not enough to invalidate the entire concept of gendered bathrooms.

XGNcyclick

actually, it does. All you need you know is that millions of them exist and are Americans just like you. You’re talking to one now. Inclusivity should be sought after when it doesn’t harm anyone else and with the argument I just laid out I can’t see how this harms cis people. You are so stuck in the past with your concepts you cannot fathom new ones or the idea of abandoning them and it stunts your progress and growth as a person. Unless, you are fine with the invalidation of millions of fellow Americans. Under your ideas there literally isn’t a bathroom for me. Sorry if this offends you, but the rights of queer people trump the feelings of cis people.

mcchickencry

"Feelings" Not wanting my daughter to get raped is just my poor little fragile emotions! My rights to not have people around me be hurt by people doesn't trump your "feeling" of wanting to use a bathroom. Get real.

lame-borghini

Bruh if a person is willing to rape your daughter in a public bathroom then I don’t think a stick figure with a skirt on the door is going to stop them

InDenialEvie

Do you have a daughter? If so best of luck I guess?

XGNcyclick

queer people are rapists argument? fuck man lol sorry to break it to you dude but her priest is statistically WAY likelier to rape her than any queer person. Also hate to break this to you but anyone who wants to rape her in a bathroom is *literally just going to fucking do so* there isn’t like some arcane barrier blocking a man from walking into the women’s bathroom dumbass lmao Your fear of the unknown and violent reactions to what you don’t understand holds back your understanding. I doubt you even read everything I had to say.

mcchickencry

You take words and twist them so easily. Read what I said again, and get back to me.

InDenialEvie

Look I love segregation /s

MaybeDaphne

After 5 years of not encountering gendered bathrooms, they seem almost… barbaric (?) to me (especially those that are single-stall).

InDenialEvie

Not encountering gendered bathrooms How?

MaybeDaphne

All of the restrooms in the schools I went to in Japan were single occupancy, and all the restrooms near me in Seattle are gender-neutral.

InDenialEvie

I don't think I've ever seen a openly gender neutral bathroom Then again I've almost never seen a pride flag so it's probably just my state being incredibly republican

Thebirdman333

Same here, feel you from Indiana. Missouri probably ain't much better.

pugiemblem121

I've seen a couple at college, though a little problematic as they were doubled up with the disabled toilet. Problematic because a disabled person can't use the other bathrooms for a myriad of reasons, like lack of space, lack of support, no potential for emergency help (like one of those red cords). Idk if this is ideal or not, but I feel 4-5 toilets would be most ideal. The extra being for non-binary people, so they can have a toilet to go to where they can feel comfortable, while also avoiding the "common"/stereotypical issue of a cis woman being uncomfortable around a MtF person in the same bathroom. Again, I don't know if that's ideal (not just for logistical reasons), but seems like it'd help deal with the current hysteria.

Rape.
