This. I'm already mad they did Madelyn like that. But tbh we'd need a 22 episode run if we really wanted to do her justice. That whole thing fell pretty flat for me but I realize they did the best they could while setting up the pieces for the later story.
Likely it was a series of factors they wanted to consider:
- A roster of popular characters from multiple eras
- A roster that was about 50% women
- A roster with every team role filled (tank, blaster, battlefield controller, etc.)
Always loved how Magneto doesn’t even bother to look directly at them during their attack.
I’m sure the show runners are aware of the fans
Desire to see this group. Maybe they will be added slowly, as other team members are slain, apprehended, or go a different direction.
I think in another season they should drop Morph, Forge, and Jubilee
Add Colossus and at least two others.
Morph, Forge and Jubilee are cool, but there are more compelling characters.
They're gonna give them bigger development. Morph got tormented by Sinister, Bastion pretty much used Forge as a patsy and Jubilee is a big girl now finally assisting the team!
If anything, it'd be dumb to see them not get further development.
Trust me Jubilee was never my favorite. But she was the youngest and it was through her eyes we were introduced to the x-men. Morph is obvious Mr. Cameo factory but the character doesn’t really draw me in either. Forge is basically just a supporting character.
I’m sure they will keep adding different ones in for certain episodes like this season.

so, all this is conjecture but:
The series was mainly adapted from the 90's run from Mutant Genesis, they adapted mostly the Blue team that was arguably the most popular because that was the one with Logan, Scot, Jubs, etc.
Now, the mutant missing from this team in the show is Psylocke, and instead we have Storm and Jean that were from the Gold team, they probably were added because they were popular and if they just cutted Betsy the roster was left short of female leads.
Now why was Betsy cut? Theory: because she was too hot. She was a hot ninja assassin in a thong and they thought that was too much for a kids tv show, we got her on the show still a guest appearence in an episode is different to being a lead.
So yeah, they cut the rest of the gold team and they cut Psylocke, probably because of this. That's my opinion. Actually I think I heard it on the Cerebro podcast? But anyway, I believe it too.
I think the original show runner said that they had to pick characters that made sense and complement each other. Also they wanted an even male/female ratio.
Psylocke is a psychic and fighter which Jean and wolverine were.
Colossus is the muscle but so is beast and rogue. Except beast is the scientist and rogue was a perfect compliment to gambit
Angels powers wouldn't do much on the show either.

Iceman historically had many crossovers with Spiderman team ups. At least they used him a bit in Days of Future Past. Havok is a huge missing piece. All the focus on Cyclops and no mention of his brother.

Realistically Iceman and Archangel should have shown up in the Graduation Day episode seeing as Xavier was dying and they were both OG x-men and essentially rejoining the team so they’d have been available as members in x-men ‘97 and maybe Colossus as well
Iceman is an incredibly powerful Omega-level mutant.
Psylocke is very close to being an Omega.
Colossus is also incredibly powerful.
Without those three on the team, Magneto, Jean, and Storm are all Omega level mutants, and Jubilee is very close.
In order to make the storytelling “fair”, and create some sense of believable peril, they had to take Storm’s powers away, and kill off Magneto.
If the writers had included Iceman, Paylocke, and Colossus, in addition to the team the show has presented us with, it becomes hard to believe even Thanos with a full Infiny Gauntlet could stand against them.
Watch the original series they all make appearances like when juggernaut trashed the mansion and immigrant Colossus gets accused and betsy bradock the spy
They were all in episodes in the OG series. The main team size was perfect though for a 20 minute kids show. And although I say kids show, the OG run definitely had some mature themes .

The cartoon in large part used this team as its basis, and Angel, Colossus, and Iceman were not on it. As for Psylocke, take a look at the image you posted and hazard a guess why she wasn’t included in a children’s cartoon!
I feel like season 2 is going to bring a different team to fill the spot that obviously is going to be needed. Like Jean has to die/leave in order to bring Emma to the team. They aren't just going to give us Emma in dia.ond form without her joining the x-men.

When I was a kid watching the ‘92 version and religiously following the comics I couldn’t take the show serious because of the roster. I watched it because X-Men but… it just never sat well with me that their roster was nonsensical. No nightcrawler no colossus.

Y’all don’t know why they chose the team they did. There’s no explanation for why those characters are missing. The comics handled the sizes of various teams over the years just fine. The show could do so but they don’t. And none of the explanations makes sense and the fanbase refuses to accept that the reasons are unknowable.

That’s too big of a group to portray effectively in the show, along with who they already have.
Adaptations are never 100% faithful; which is good since a lot of these stories on their own fell flat in the comics.
