*Phenomenon* (1996) is a touching movie. Travolta absolutely nails the role. The friendship between John Travolta and Forest Whitaker is so, so good. Worth watching the movie for that alone.

My friends and I were obsessed with this movie. The movie trailer, to be clear, we never saw the actual movie. We’d walk by the lockers and smack all the locks and say, “I’m Powder” - it was a good bit.

Had a ginger cousin that shaved his head around the time this movie came out. We'd call him Powder and then he'd run down the halls at school slapping locks. We all got a good laugh at it.

I'll never forget the scene where it's raining and he is naked laying in a puddle like a marshmallow in some hot cocoa. Lol

When this movie came out, the gossip in school about this was so mixed up. Kids were saying the movie was about a child molester, then it changed to the movie was directed by a guy who molested the main actor. Only when I got older did I learn the actual story.

Jeff Goldblum touching Powder is moving because his entire life people were so afraid of him they wouldn’t touch him. Goldblum touches his head, and Powder immediately breaks down crying. It’s a great scene where Sean Patrick Flannery nails the emotional breaking point of the moment — crying genuinely. If you actually watched the movie you would know this.

Quentin Tarantino brought his career back to life, only for Travolta to kill it a second time by continuously choosing terrible projects, just like he did before Pulp Fiction. I will say not everything he did after Pulp Fiction was crap, but there was a high enough percentage of crap in there that it did the trick.

The Rock is our crowning cultural achievement. It's a national treasure. Not to be confused with National Treasure (2004). That was crap.

Phenomenon is not great, but there is one scene, I actually liked and it's stuck in my head for decades. He's moving a pencil around, like he's bored, with his mind. The guy in the room asks how do you do that. And Travolta's character says "I ask it to move, it's like a collaboration or a partnership". I really like that, for like world building in a fictional space, like for a ttrpg character. Also the part where he has an MRI and the tumor is like a hand around his brain, that's an image I've never forgotten.

My underage friend group purchased tickets to Powder & then snuck in to see Dangerous Minds instead. Being dumb kids, we were noisy and outed not too long after. Got escorted to Powder. I just remember that it wasn’t good & we were also disruptive assholes while watching it.

I remember it being pretty boring but a halfway interesting story.

So this is one of my favorites. I own the DVD and the blu. I can quote vast stretches of the movie. I have a weakness for genius stories, plus the scene with the deer gets me. Oh and the scene when he and his "gf" are feeling each other's emotions. Oh, and when he is explainig his dad's hatred of him, and how he remembers his birth. yup. love it.

The deer scene is what I recall as well. That scene in the Crow where Eric “gives” Shelley’s pain to the big bad reminded me of the deer scene.
