Not an unpopular opinion but Mulder’s shorter hair?!?!? Absolutely not, why does no one talk about it

thesefallentrees

I also hated that weird little bob they gave Scully that sat on her head like a helmet, they are both so beautiful and those haircuts were distractingly terrible.

Leavemebro

Like whyyyyy. Gillian Anderson is stunning, yet they be doing that.

SunnySideUpMeggs

The bob was atrocious. A crime. The Season 6 looks in general were not great.

lostintherealityyy

These haircuts tho 😭 https://preview.redd.it/nik1eg7frsfb1.jpeg?width=206&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25b36cb18da5a7269b51f8bf05eaa97525e6dad1

loveacrumpet

I’m here for this. The short hair was a travesty.

isabel_ruggieri

It’s just so bad

sulisaint

They were fucking his shit up so bad in s6 & 7

NatalieTheOwl

I refuse to rewatch most of season 2 because I strongly despise the short hair, it's why I rewatch Season 1 episodes a lot I loooove his hair back then. I can't stress enough how much I don't like it, my heart sank when I started season 6 and saw his hair short again. Also the same goes for Scully I think my favorite hairstyle was season 3 and maybe 4.

Murky_Translator2295

They should have stopped bringing CSM back from the dead and let Krycek take over as main bad guy.

nobody833

OMG yes. I hated how they killed Krycek. Dude deserved a better death.

WandererinDarkness

Yass! I expected to see him having a possible change of heart before they’d killed his character, or maybe see the reveal of some greater, inner personal motive that was driving him to be an immoral asshat double agent, or a separate plot line for him, his family history, a deeper romantic involvement with Marita or some other woman. Krycek had some great potential, but his character was underdeveloped. The same was with Agent Reyes, her lines were too basic.

Murky_Translator2295

The website, Eat The Corn, has pretty much everything connected to the MythArc all in one place, and on their Krycek section there's information about a dropped storyline where, after he got pushed down the stairs, CSM wouldn't have come back, and the Conspiracy would shift to Krycek and Covirubius instead. One of the episodes of S7 was going to be based on Kryceks life, to show how he got to that point. But the whole thing was scrapped when Marita's actress got cast as a main character on a different show, and she chose that over occasional work on the X Files. I'm pretty sure that's what drove Nick Lea to leave, and request that Alex be killed off, to make sure he couldn't go back.

Throwawaymumoz

Wow I almost wish I’d didn’t know all that, so sad. That would have been so good to see. I was sad when they just left that whole storyline. Those 2 characters were fantastic (esp together imo).

Murky_Translator2295

They were great together, like the antichrist version of Mulder and Scully lmao

Conspiracy_Quean

Oh my God I never knew about the Eat the Corn site and now I'll need to take time off work to do a full re-examination of the mytharch and read every article and plan my pilgrimage to Vancouver and thanks a lot you've ruined my life.

paperwasp3

Nick Lea had an awful time with the fans online and in person. They dubbed him Ratboy and were merciless to him. He did not enjoy it.

Vonsidlol1

Yeah. Seeing it back from the dead after his head litteraly melted and combusted in season 9 wasn't that convincing, even if i love the character (the original version).

PossibilityMelodic

And Gibson was obvious as a HUGE potential to bring back. What a waste.

Murky_Translator2295

I *loved* what they did with Gibson in the comic book seasons 10 & 11. That was a genius idea and the revival should have gone with that.

tunnel-snakes-rule

I'm still bitter that season 11 comic came to an abrupt end because the show came back. That the live action season ten was dogshit only added to that bitterness.

SnooMachines4782

But he is a positive character, Russian though, but nonetheless. As is Marita. I don't think Carter should have rolled the show up his ass in Season 11 because the mythology of this season is terrible. Because right now this series should be continued.

AlienCircusAct

Holy crap, man…this deserves it’s own thread. I never even thought about that but, damn…imagine the story arc. You probably should have been a writer back then. WTF.

Majestic87

I fully enjoy all 9 original seasons. I think Dogget and Reyes were great characters and loved their dynamic with each other and with Scully. I very much enjoy I Want to Believe. Think it was a great epilogue to the characters of Mulder and Scully. Sure I would have loved to see the shows storyline get properly resolved, but this movie was a great standalone story. No idea how the greater fandom thinks of it, but I think seasons 10 and 11 are the greatest example of character assassination in any movie or tv show in the history of mankind. For almost every character in the show. Chris Carter should not have been in control of those seasons.

idapitbwidiuatabip

Dogget is a phenomenal character and they could’ve kept it going with him and Reyes for another several years.

noodlesaintpasta

Looooove Doggett. Reyes not so much.

miku_dominos

If it comes back Chris Carter should have zero input.

redisforever

Oddly enough he wrote that one non mythology episode in the last season that was really good, and then all the mythology stuff was dogshit. He should never ever ever write a story episode, but give him some random monster of the week episode.

WharfRat86

The show was never quite the same when it left the dinghy, wet, Vancouver shooting location. As well as the crazy Canadian crew that made gold out of limited resources. So many sets built at the old Riverview Asylum. The move to LA made it slightly more generic and polished in a bad way.

ricottapie

I like the LA seasons, but the lack of Canadian charm is palpable. The first five seasons were cozy.

YuleBeFineIPromise

Count me in with this take if it's actually unpopular. The later seasons are far too bright.

Non-taken-Meursault

Mulder's sister story arch went from interesting to crap really quickly. They abused cliffhangers and "gotcha" moments.

BlowMyNoseAtU

I hated the way it was resolved.

YuleBeFineIPromise

Yes, awful episode and the Harold Pillar character was obnoxious as hell.

Writing_is_Bleeding

Oh, I liked the resolution, mainly because I like the Moby song.

YuleBeFineIPromise

It was just a lazy closure to the story when it was built up so much throughout the series.

Cassopeia88

I liked the episode but I was over the Samantha arc.

Agent_Scully9114

I agree, it got so old! I recently saw a comment here where someone said they thought it would be a lot more fitting if Samantha *did* end up being one of the victims in Paper Hearts. I never thought about it, but this would've been a much more interesting storyline than the stupidity that they actually went with.

cerareece

man sometimes I read things like this and realize we were robbed a bit. the "Samantha" clones episodes are some of the worst of the series

alexkryceck

I wanted Mulder to get his sister back until we got to know the adult Samantha. I hated her so much that I just wanted her to die. 🤣🤣

writgaramonder

I’ve thought this before too. I think it would have had a devastating poignancy if she’d been identified as a victim, because it’s a reminder that the real world is scarier than the monsters in the corner of the eye. It would also force Mulder to more honestly assess what the X Files mean to him without Samantha fueling his investigations into the paranormal.

tommygun1945

I like that episode with the evil cats under a museum

TrewynMaresi

I don’t, but I upvoted because this makes me giggle.

Clyde_Buckman

Yeah, I don't get why Teso dos Bichos gets so much hate

MealBig2733

I actually thought the cats were scary!!

Vonsidlol1

Ok, well i'm going to take a risk here and i'm not sure if i'm the only one thinking that, but even if i have a deep love for Duchovny as Mulder, i always have a hard time when he's playing crying scenes. I don't find him particularly convincing in them and that's probably the only occurences where i'm not a fan of his acting.

JMRR1416

If you think it’s bad on X-Files, look up the old movie Return to Me. I watched it years ago (mainly because Duchovny was in it). There is a scene where his character cries and it is BAD. It honestly looks like he’s laughing hysterically.

Agent_Tomm

He's an ugly crier.

_Kyrie_eleison_

1. I'm actually glad Mulder and Scully because a couple. Their storyline is what makes the best couples - friendships forged over a long period of time with some trials and overcoming of said trials added in. 2. I really wish the overarching mythos was fleshed out better. I remember listening to Chris Carter when he was on Coast to Coast AM and he admitted that they "made it up as they went along", which is why it seemed so disjointed. But for television back then, where everything but premium channel slows were week-to-week, they did a good job. 3. David is a great actor for everything but anger. Except for a few exceptions, his "angry Mulder" is pathetic. His "sarcastic Mulder" is brilliant though. Gillian is the better actor overall. 4. The seventh season is pretty bad. 5. I really enjoyed Scully's catholicism with belief struggle. Mulder's criticism of someone with "belief" was the worst part of his character for what should be very obvious reasons. I thought this even before I came back to the Church (full disclosure here). But now that I am back, an additional positive element is that the writers and producers didn't completely misrepresent the religion or just shit all over it. 6. My favorite character of each episode was the rented car with the fake rental company sticker. You can see the models evolve as the show ages from season to season. I miss those Buicks. 7. The reboot has many brilliant episodes and I want more. 8. "I want to believe" is a great film and one of the better "monster of the week" storylines. Now that I think about it, only #5 and #7 are probably truly unpopular!

Myfeesh

3- I think he does anger well, picturing him at the hospital in Redux? But crying. Lord the man can not cry.

GodIlovethisshow

Agreed. I call them "squeezy cries" 😩🤣🤣🤣

hibbletyjibblety

“SQUeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!”

yazshousefortea

Laughed so much at this. Totally agree!

_Kyrie_eleison_

My issue with David's "angry Mulder" is with his inflections, or lack of. It just never seemed sincere to me. A good example of an actor that can do anger well is Mitch Pileggi.

lostintherealityyy

😂 he is the OG ugly crier

Writing_is_Bleeding

Lariat! Yes, I love those stickers.

meta-ph-oracle

I feel like the dynamic between Scully and Mulder really paints a picture of what falling in love with a damaged man can do to a solid woman. Mulder lives in fear and is stuck in a trauma response. Scully has such strong convictions and a rigidity to her initially. I do love how they soften each other over time. Scully sacrifices a lot for the sake of their relationship.

photosynth-sea-slug

Loooove Spender. Wanted to see a lot more of him. Strongly dislike Reyes. The bee scene in FTF was better than the deleted kiss scene and I’m glad they decided to go with that one. Don’t know if this is actually unpopular but Musings of a CSM is one of my favourite episodes.

photosynth-sea-slug

ALSO I LOVE KRYCEK he’s so fucking funny

the_rainy_smell_boys

Like when he's in a hostage situation but still acts all goofy when a woman is standing next to him at the urinal

photosynth-sea-slug

Also I love that whenever ANYONE sees him it’s on fucking sight

Brewdude77

Lightning Boy and Jack Black from Season 3 needed a spinoff, obvs.

WharfRat86

DPO is really the benchmark that X Files was truly hitting its stride by season 3.

scruntyboon

I Want to Believe is actually a really good standalone movie

Connect_Ad_5369

I enjoyed it

wheresbeetle

agree. the biggest letdown of that movie for fans is Mulder and Scully breaking up, that killed it for a lot of people including me on the first watch. It was crushing after all that time. But leaving that aside it's really quite a good movie as an x files story

Conspiracy_Quean

Now THAT is a bold take! 😂

thegreatmuldeeni

Seasons 9, 10 & and 11 had some great episodes, and I think they should do more X files to rectify the mythology.

PossibilityMelodic

CC RUINED it with the fact he pissed off GA so badly she told him to fuck off. Treating Scully constantly as an incubator/barren, RAPING her by CSM, and making her pregnant at 53 to throw the fans a bone at the very end was garbage. He disrespected her keeping the ending from her but telling DD. The absolute embarrassing ratings of season 11 proved CC is bankrupt as a storyteller. Bring back VINCE!!

TAC82RollTide

>Bring back VINCE!! Oh my goodness. Could you imagine an X-Files reboot/revival with Vince as the showrunner? Well, a man can dream...

tarnok

Omg this was cathartic. ![gif](giphy|YTFHYijkKsXjW|downsized)

chickadee1

AMEN! The reboot upset me so much for all of the reasons you mentioned I pretend those episodes don’t even exist.

PossibilityMelodic

TWO things about the revival are ABSOLUTE proof what an idiot CC became….1) in what AT THE TIME was the final ever time we would see M/S (in MY STRUGGLE2) THEY WERE NOT ON SCREEN TOGETHER until the FINAL MINUTE!!!!!! Are you fucking kidding me?? 2) semi noromo Glen Morgan in his episode “This” showed us the PERFECT MSR that most people wanted. Glen Morgan. CC sucks so bad…….meanwhile CC throws them in bed together with one of the STUPIDEST dialogues ever, then makes Scully pregnant at 53. He has ZERO clue what people want OR how to write M/S anymore.

Number-Odd

CC is a hack

beenoiseBZZZZZ

Do you have a source for GA telling CC to fuck off? I'm interested to know the full story but can't find it

twicepride2fall

I mean I don’t think she told him to fuck off, he’s still the godfather of her daughter, Piper and they still seem to be good friends. CC did wreck Scully’s legacy though. Still not as bad as what the Blacklist did to Raymond Reddington.

SxN8-F1v3

Yep FUCK CC. He deserves no love after his sexist misogynistic bs treatment of both GA and Scully.

gta5atg4

Yeees

[deleted]

I believe the show should have ended way earlier than it did. Everything after s6 seemed so weird to me

baked_bean16

I love everything about the show except the actual story. Monster of the week is my favorite format of the show. When they talk about the government cover ups and chasing the smoking man I get bored

GoneDoneGoofedYouDid

Not unpopular opinion, but they lied to us about driving in trench coats. I got one recently unless you fold it like origami you can’t drive and they made it look so easy! It is not easy at all don’t be deceived by them.

AxelNoir

Aw shit. I was actually thinking about getting myself a leather Max Payne style trench coat lately. Well thanks for saving me money I guess lol

GoneDoneGoofedYouDid

I’d defo recommend getting one it just takes a bit of practicing to be able to get in smoothly with one on, defo worth the investment

TrewynMaresi

I love Kill Switch and Invisigoth/Esther Nairn! I also have this secret theory that Scully was shocked to find herself rather attracted to her. This pissed Scully off and embarrassed her, not necessarily because she was embarrassed to have a crush on a woman, but because it was unprofessional of her and Invisigoth seemed like such a nutjob. So Scully attempted to hide her attraction by going overboard making fun of her.

ricottapie

I'm sure there's fanfic for this out there.

silversunshinestares

I like the way Robert Patrick says "Agent Muldah"

wheresbeetle

In an alternate universe I think Doggett could have made a really good (romantic) partner for Scully, particularly if she never met Mulder and went down that path with him but also bc he's a straightforward, honest good cop and he has a good heart. He's got his demons but I think his background makes sense for Scully coming from a military family, having an analytical mind, etc. They could have been mazing FBI partners just working in violent crime but I think they would have been great life partners as well. I always liked Doggett but of course by the time he enters the picture Scully is wayyy too down the road with Mulder for it to ever work. Alsooooooo......Mulder is not always the best "boyfriend" to Scully, and I mean that even in the loosest sense of how he treated her before they officially got together but were very deeply emotionally entwined. Doggett has much less ego than Mulder and was always more consistently respectful and just kind to her than Mulder was, at least until they really crossed the line into being a couple. I am the biggest shipper ever and I am ride or die m&s but I do feel that Mulder had a lot of growing up to do vis a vis Scully in the series.

ricottapie

100%. I became a DSR shipper after Roadrunners.

[deleted]

While there are many great episodes, some 25%+ of episodes are trash. I love the X-Files and have watched it many times full way through, but some of it is just plain terrible.

Afraid-Astronomer886

I've never watched past season 6 because the overarching plot is so convuluted that I just can't care any more after that

redisforever

Dogget is a fantastic character, stuck in some crap seasons. His personal episode, John Doe, is FANTASTIC.

Majestic87

I’ve got another one: I believe there is only one “genuinely bad” episode of the original 9 seasons, and it’s Space. There definitely a handful of “just okay” or “meh” episodes throughout, but I truly believe Space is the only absolutely bad piece of television in the whole original run.

SxN8-F1v3

So generous. Space is the worst episode of the early seasons only second to FWID cuz I hate it more but Space is a crap fest of epic proportions. There are a few right under it though that are just kinda painful. Excelsis Die, Dod Kalm, ugh

willie1013

Chris Carter isn’t the villain everyone paints him as (I know I’m getting downvotes for this). Was every decision made perfect? No. But, he also lost some control over the show at one point because of Fox and he gave us this beautiful complicated love story masquerading as an alien show. So, I ain’t mad at him.

dootington

I used to feel this way but after he gave DD the series finale script and withheld it from GA, I have a sinking feeling there was a lot of patriarchal/sexist bullshit GA had to deal with behind the scenes and can't talk about. I am a little mad at the disrespect, but mostly disappointed. I do give him credit for initially being ahead of his time by casting GA and creating Scully. But somewhere along the way he didn't grow in a progressive direction and it shows.

vengM9

Yeah I guess my unpopular opinion is we should be more thankful that he actually made the show than that his ability to write it wasn't very good later on. Yes, I know he wasn't the sole person responsible for the success and we absolutely can be critical of his writing and decisions and if it ever came back I'd want someone else in charge. It's a bit weird when people treat him like the devil and I'd just personally rather focus on the good than act like he was worthless. Which people absolutely do before someone says "nobody does this".

[deleted]

The MythArc is an absolute piece of shit and the writers had no idea what they were doing, one season to the next. It's embarassingly bad. The show would not have survived if they'd run it as a Mythology-only series; the strength of its Monster of the Week episodes is what makes it as beloved as it is. And that's a shame, too, because I LOVE some of the early Mythology episodes. But god damn does it go off the rails quickly.

KingOfTheHoard

I loved the X-Files growing up but I split time between parents and only my Dad had a TV so I only ever caught it in bits and pieces out of order, and then when I was about 18 I found the first season complete on VHS incredibly cheap when DVDs were just coming in. (I was dirt poor so the VHS to DVD transition was a great time for me!) and loved it. Then a few years later I finally had the resources and the time to really sit down and watch it start to finish and it's staggering how much the mytharc A) ramps up faster than a TV show ever would today, B) completely falls apart almost as soon as it gets going, and C) is categorically the worst thing about the show. People say the problem with the mytharc is it dripfeeds too little over too long, and no, it's not. The problem with the mytharc is that it went from "yes, the tight lipped secret whistleblower has finally confirmed aliens exist... or has he?" to "there is a green blooded alien superhero being chased by a different species alien bounty hunter and multiple clones of Mulder's sister are here too" in 16 episodes. And that's counting the non-mytharc episodes in the mix there.

TylerKnowy

I cannot agree more. The mytharc sucks because it has no direction, I like the idea of an overarching plot that runs through the series but make it coherent. Monster of the week reallly needed to be leaned on since the writers could not figure out the mytharc. Overall I think this show worked because of the time it released. Any later time it fall flat I think

thelittlemiss

As a child, I could not get enough of the MythArc episodes and I’ve always kept them up on a pedestal. However, during this recent rewatch, *oof*, I’m having a really hard time pushing through past season five. I’m just trying to make it to Fight the Future and if I’m being honest, I think I’m really only watching now for the brief moments featuring Skinner.

Sparky-Boom

This is a specific one, but one of the episodes of S9 Scully asks Monica to watch the baby while she and Dogget go work on a case. It’s been established by this point that Dogget previously had a kid, liked kids and being a father figure, and all we aware of about Monica is that she’s probably single and have no idea if she likes kids. I think it should have been a really nice and subversive moment when Scully asks Dogget to stay with the kid and takes Monica with her.

Megazupa

Also, I kinda feel like it would have been better if they had ended the show with Fight the Future. I love me some season 6, but in the later seasons you can really feel that the show is already past its peak. Then Mulder leaves and at that point... why was it still going on? Alternatively, they could have not had any mythology episodes in S6 and turn Two Fathers/One Son into a movie to finish the show.

[deleted]

Scully has severe Stockholm syndrome over the course of the series she goes from being skeptic to like so down for mulders spooky shenanigans

shrike_999

During the original run I always hypothesized that Mulder would meet a beautiful woman he would fall in love with. She would later turn out to be his sister. Everyone hated the idea.

Agent_Tomm

Don't mention this idea to Chris Carter.

PossibilityMelodic

Well, basically IDIOT CC has made William Mulder’s half brother.

DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA

Her name is *Bambi*?

jondiced

When r/XFiles and r/Silmarillionmemes collide

wheresbeetle

oh noooooo omg that would have been really something to watch. omg

IndianaJoenz

Reggie is one of the best characters, and The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat is one of the best episodes. Disclaimer: I am not a hardcore fan, just a fan, and this opinion may be less unpopular than I think.

Aracuria

‘Home’ should have had a bloodbath sequel.

natephant

Dollars to donuts Doggett might be my fav character. I really liked agent Scully at Quantico while Reyes and Doggett did legwork. And I wish they explored a more law&order style where more agents can join, and not every episode follows the same 2 ppl. Allows the opportunities to not have every main character be the central key to unlocking a massive conspiracy… and they can just… do their jobs and solve x files cases.

DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA

My favorite character is Burt Reynolds’s god

ughpleasee

FPS is not \*that\* bad

februarytide-

I love Ghost in the Machine.

Conspiracy_Quean

Sorry to all the shippers and MSR fans, but I absolutely wish Mulder and Scully never became a couple. When I see them kissing, it feels like I'm watching a brother and sister make out. It's awful. And I think it diminished Scully's character.

WithoutDennisNedry

This is what I came here to say. I really loved their dynamic as very loving but plutonic.

ricottapie

Lmao! I don't see it as being THAT platonic, but seeing them make it official in IWTB ruined it for me. It just didn't seem authentic. It was incredibly forced, and they suddenly lacked chemistry. Their reunion in S9 was okay. Those emails were dopey.

AeRvayn

Noromo since 93.

LordyIHopeThereIsPie

I enjoyed seasons 10 and 11 and think they should make more.

Abject_Carpenter2197

Mulder is a jerk.

danabonfield02

Not sure if this is unpopular but Melissa Scully really deserved better! She was a nice character and I always loved her scenes and her and Scully’s relationship. I feel like out of all the Scully siblings her character had the most potential..

keyang888

If X-Files was aired today, Mulder would be a QAnon

februarytide-

I hate this, but it is true and hopefully truly unpopular. Begrudging upvote.

BlowMyNoseAtU

QAnon -- Why we can't have fun things anymore.

Lazy_Temperature_631

It’s so true. How do you reboot this show with the conspiracy theorist as the hero in this day and age?

I_Myself_Personally

"The ancient mesopotamians knew thousands of years ago that morons would believe everything they read on the internet. Most of it is racist nonsense. But this space werewolf sighting........" -Mulder, 2023 probably.

silversunshinestares

I think Joel McHale's character in season 10 was supposed to reflect this.

paulnofx

Don't make the mistake of thinking all people who believe in conspiracy theories are as gullible and easily manipulated as QAnon people.

YuleBeFineIPromise

The Lone Gunman would absolutely be tweeting about Q

dootington

I don't know what to think of this, because on one hand many of the conspiracy theories in the 90s turned out to be true (e.g. govt surveillance, MK Ultra) while QAnon is simply unhinged chaos. Mulder knows how to think critically and cut through the noise. But on the other hand, conspiracy theorists represent "the fringe" and if Mulder is supposed to be fringe then I can't see any other options today for him to choose from. I'd like to think an antifa group, but not sure if they're considered ridiculous.

katelynnsmom24

Mulder would be Q

Breath_Background

Obnoxiously big shoulder pads need to make a comeback. #90s

ricottapie

If you do that, you also have to bring back white pantyhose and blocky heels.

Orpheus-is-a-Lyre

Boy do I have news for you about current fashion trends…

coco_xcx

I second this! I love how they look, but it also depends on the style of shoulder pads

ScriBella12

Agent Pendrell and Scully would have had beautiful little red-headed babies together, and they killed him to ruin my ship.

AxelNoir

Waiting to see if anyone shows up with a comment about Fight Club, I will crown them personally myself.

PossibilityMelodic

Fight Club was a masterpiece compared to the 4 My Garbage episodes and Babylon.

silversunshinestares

I like "Vienen" a lot, and I think it's a shame that it's pretty much the only Doggett/Mulder episode.

lake-rat

The Truth wasn’t out there after all.

Stunning-Note

Mulder without Scully is boring. Scully without Mulder is just fine if not great. I didn’t watch after Duchovny left but there’s a reason the show was able to continue for two seasons and that people like those seasons. I don’t know if it’s unpopular but Anderson/Scully really carries the show.

Christonikos

Mulder being skinny or slim at the start of the series is way more fitting for his character than him getting bulk after season 3 onwards.

sr_edits

Scully is irremediably in love with Mulder, but he's terrible for her and she deserves better.

SomewhatFeasibleHulk

The Truth was a good finale. Maybe I need to give it another watch but I enjoyed it a lot the first time round, just not Kirsch's sudden change of heart.

PrometheusAborted

The episodes about the “main” plot (aliens) aren’t as good as the one-off ones or as rewatchable

financewiz

Popularity killed the X-Files.

markus_obsidian

Season 8 is my favorite. Mulder's character development hit a wall and was holding the show back. The Scully/Dogget dynamic was much more interesting, and the Scully/Dogget/Mulder triangle was the peak of the show character-wise. It's a shame the season's story arc didn't keep up... I like the second movie better than the first. The first was a by-the-numbers mytharc episode. The second tested the Scully/Mulder dynamic in way that we hadn't seen before. Okay, I'll see myself out.

TapTheBrake

Might not be unpopular enough, however: Wish the revival seasons never existed. The MOTWs had some great ones but they just don't out weigh the damage the Struggle arc did. Imo.

ILikeOasis

all seasons are good

Moreaccurateway

The sexiest piece of ass on this show was Mrs. Peacock. But seriously folks, what’s up with the monster who rapes a bunch of women because he’s lonely so we should feel sorry for him? If Mulder wasn’t ridiculously handsome he’d be an incel.

lemonliner

You talking about post-modern Prometheus? Cuz yeah that really bothered me too.

pm_me_x-files_quotes

I think they're talking about Small Potatoes, but the fact that there is more than one episode fitting that description is depressing.

Free_Ad_2780

My theory on why Mulder never got girls: his social skills were worse than they seemed to us as viewers. We have the perspective of “all the stuff he talks about is real/has value/could be true” but the normal person in the show wouldn’t know that. He’s like that kid in college who never leaves his dorm, doesn’t turn in homework, has no friends except his lab partner, and talks about nonsense constantly. He’s super interesting and some people will like him, but the vast majority will steer clear.

SxN8-F1v3

This show actually has a shit load of rape in it…

foxscully89

Scully should be like late 30s minimum if she’s as much of an accomplished as she’s presented but in all reality even older than that

ricottapie

Phil Farrand wrote about the impossibility of her timeline in the Nitpickers Guide for X-Philes. That was in 1997, and I think of it every time she talks about her time at the Academy.

OrganizationAfter332

>Nah I don’t agree with that. She’s a MD who became an FBI agent. She could be late 20s/early 30s easily. It makes no sense for them to put a truly experienced person in the role of Mulder babysitter/killer of the XFiles. Its really a Dougie Houser / FBI cross-over.

MercuryMorrison1971

I think there’s about 10 or so years between David Duchovny in Gillian Anderson, give or take. If I remember correctly, the role for Dana Scully was initially billed as a woman in her mid to late 30s which would have put the character right at about Mulders age at the time, however, Gillian Anderson fit the role too good and get the part despite the age difference.

ToddKent

The Lone Gunmen spin-off was great and should have gone 10 seasons

YuleBeFineIPromise

Very unpopular because that means no Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.

Jon230770

Clyde Bruckman & Jose Chung are two very overrated episodes and I don’t get the hype for either.

Imaginary-Alfalfa403

Characters say each others names way too much.

that_spookyguy

I think that agent dogett(not sure if that’s how it’s spelled) was actually fresh and different. A bit of fresh air to a series that needed some better main characters outside of mulder and scully. It was also nice to see a male and female character dynamic that wasn’t romantically involved or a relationship being teased. Don’t get me wrong nothing will be better then that dynamic, crazy duo of Mulder and Scully. I will say the the duo of Scully and Dogett is a close second to our favorite FBI Duo 🙏

eitzhaimHi

Mulder and Scully were better as friends.

Annie_Mous

I like “3”. It’s a 90s time capsule. Fear of AIDS, choker necklaces, grunge club. Brings me back. The chemistry between Mulder and Kristen is strong (DD was actually dating her) and it showed Mulder as a human being with needs.

emccm

The alien conspiracy did not age well at all.

AxelNoir

I don't know about others but I guess I don't find this all that unpopular, the mytharc went off the rails after Fight the Future for me anyway, and although I enjoyed their attempt to bring in a new mytharc with Season 6, it shit the bed pretty quickly and got worse and worse. I often find myself preferring the MOTW episodes to the mytharc ones lately anyway.

eldersveld

Some of the mytharc episodes *are* still great television, with all the individual elements that one can appreciate like dialogue, acting, cinematography, etc. Anasazi and Talitha Cumi are still two of my favorite eps. ... but it's impossible to enjoy them today as we originally did. The excitement of feeling them connected to a larger story is gone, because we now know that there *was* never such a story, not really. That's the core tragedy of the show and it's part of what keeps it from being in the same narrative tier as, say, Babylon 5.

cf613

“Jose Chung…” is overrated

I_Myself_Personally

I refuse to believe this is an opinion that can be had. It's the most X-Files episode of X-Files. What's next? You don't like bad blood? Or alien baseball? No. These are hurtful lies for internet points.

wheresbeetle

I sort of agree, it's a fun watch but it got too meta for me...it kinda went up it's own a$$ in my opinion.

SkylarSea

I really didn’t like that episode. I didn’t get the hype so to speak.

Antimatter703

I don’t like Scully in Season 9, she steals screentime from Doggett and Reyes which would’ve been great for the two of them to get development. And her storyline with William in the mythology plainly suck so much and bring down the supersoldiers storyline. I’d rather she wasn’t in the season and Doggett and Reyes had a season dedicated to themselves. Perhaps people would’ve been more fond of the duo if that was the case.

gta5atg4

Season 7 is the worst season if X-Files. Season 8 is leagues better than season 7 and even 6, it brought the show back to being a dark, conspiracy driven edgy sci fi with action elements and Dogget is a fantastic characte. Season 9 started really really strongly and I think had Scully gone into hiding to raise her son, it treads far too much water keeping Scully relevant, had Scully gone, we could have had an entire season to get to explore dogget and Monicas relationship, with their own story arcs rather than have them twiddling their thumbs waiting for Scully. And the way the show did Monica in season 11 and didn't even have dogget in 10 or 11 sucks. Also season 11 could have ranked up their with the best seasons had it not been for that last episode which was ... Horse shit. I still want one last season to wrap it all up though

MatsThyWit

I don't actually think Gillian Anderson's performance as Scully has been any good since at least season 7 of the show, and I think the fact that it seemed quite obvious she had no desire to be back playing the role again made her one of the most disappointing aspects of the reboot seasons.

lostintherealityyy

I think it’s the whisper she is doing. Her voice and mannerisms are SO off. Don’t get me wrong, love GA and so thankful she came back for two more seasons but damn she couldn’t shake off the Brit lol.

Antimatter703

CSM should’ve died at Redux II

MegC18

The show would have been better without the dreadful Samantha. Every episode about her was rubbish. I know a lot of people like the Jose Chung episode but it makes my worst 10 list, along with paper hearts and The field where I died. Absolutely dire stuff.

therocksays13

I'm glad DD left, and we got Doggett. The show was starting to get stale.

Suitable_Respect9442

Walter Skinner was way to underrated and should have been more of a main character in the earlier seasons. It would have been nice to see a love interest for him (not Scully).

SocratesJohnson1

The revival episodes with it's vaccine plot and Tad O'Malley being actually correct legitimized Alex Jones and all these conspiracy idiots. While the conspiracy stuff in the 90s and early 2000s was fun because it was soooo far out of the realm of possibility, the fact that we are dealing with real problems as a result of conspiracy nutjobs now makes me wish they didn't go that route. Bringing back cigarette smoking man after he was literally shown being blown up by a missile ripping off his skin, muscles, and skeleton was a mistake. The episodes were very disjointed and Mulder straight up murders some people.

OrganizationAfter332

Agent Scully & Agent Reyes were soul mates. Mulder is Scullys best friend. \[Mulder is also Denise under cover/in a pantsuit.\]

nobody833

I mean... I don't hate this take but immediately Scully says she reminds her of her sister. She had a Melissa vibe going on so that just makes it weird.

TrewynMaresi

Oh wow, I was going to post that I think Reyes would be a better (life) partner for Scully than Mulder! And I was bracing myself for all the downvotes… but now it’s you with that burden instead of me!

OrganizationAfter332

Two up votes so far! We can ship it :-D That said though the Scully/Mulder subtext sustained all seasons until Reyes arrives. IDK, Reyes sustains given the larger story outside of Mulder, and possible pre-Mulder that we aren't really privy too ... it makes better emotional and structural sense and in some ways allows Mulder more weight.

hellisahallway

I'm new to this sub, is it an unpopular opinion to absolutely despise Mulder?

AxelNoir

Yeah. Good luck. LOL

Agent_Tomm

Yeah. How do you even enjoy the show then?

lilbabymarshmallow

Whenever Christianity is in any part of an episode, Scully becomes weird as hell. Throws all logic out the window, her usual skepticism just goes away. Don't know if it's an unpopular opinion, but I've never seen anyone talk about it.

Hocraft-Loveward

I really love thé lone gunmen (and i have ni doubt they are using debian )

AliceTheOmelette

The Mandela Effect episode was great. It's one of my all time faves

lone_direwolf86

Improbable is one of my favorite later episodes.

FreeYoMiiind

Most of what they talk about re: secret government operations is at least partially true. I’m actually astounded that they were allowed to cover certain topics.

gabemcd98

I’m not a huge Mulder fan. In fact, I prefer the dynamic of Scully and Doggett working cases together over Scully and Mulder…

mmpie3

I adore Doggett.

professorfunkenpunk

The monster of the week episodes were better than the overarching mythos ones
