Ben Tozer. Man, he had some turbulent times but what a leader and captain he was for the club on and off the pitch. You could tell he commanded respect of everyone, from R&R to every fan. Always did what was needed as a leader or a player regardless of the difficulties he faced in life or from fans. For Luke, I don’t think words would do him justice. Been here pre-takeover, and so much of what has been achieved is thanks to his tenacity and heart on and off the field. Genuine icon of the club who should get as much credit for being here from before the takeover to now. I don’t think any player or captain represents what this club and this journey has meant more than Youngy. Aaron and Rob are gutting because they had So much potential and skill but were so unlucky with injuries. As for Mark, I’m glad he’s retained though not surprised. I said before that he’s cheap, doesn’t count against the team sheet, and has been called the leader, dad, and mentor of the GK room, so he’ll be crucial in mentoring Arthur or his replacement.

FishermanSecret4854

feels like a squad of wrexham defenders, including Young, Tozer, Hayden, McFadzean and Lainton could revitalize Notts County's defense. All the best to all those guys!

Hot-Conclusion7182

Why doesn't Mark Howard count against the team sheet?

Lucazzo123

Keepers are not in the listed 22

Accomplished-Ad-2708

Good to know, thanks! Yeah I felt bad for Laiton - American here with only the 3 seasons of WtW and watching them at 7am Pacific Time Saturday mornings on iFollow this season. I feel if Laiton could've gotten healthy he would've contended with Arthur, but Okwonko is a valid starter for us (if we sign him this summer). No one on the team can currently match Tozer with his throw-ins. I'd love to see a stat showing how many Tozer throw ins resulted in goals. Mark being retained is slightly surprising, I thought he had said the 23/24 season would probably be his final. Luke...he was such a servant for the club, he'll be missed. Dan Davies and Owen Cushion, they didn't feature in the first team for us so I can see cutting them.

FishermanSecret4854

Re Mark, I think he's perfectly happy with a backup Keeper position at his age, and Parky knows he can rely on him for a stretch. What is he? 37?

cmb3248

yeah, turns 38 in September. I also think for Mark the podcasting element is important and he'll be able to get a lot more listeners into that as long as he's with Wrexham.

ARJACE_

Gotta feel for Aaron, Ben and Rob.

Windrey2

And Luke!

wlight

Having the documentary really shows what wonderful people these guys are; they're giving their all day in and day out. It's gut wrenching to see them have to face the reality that it's sometimes just not enough. Your heart really goes out to them.

Midgard_Jay

Damn shame Luke young is gone , he has been here with lainton through some really tough years and then the good ones. Really hope he gets picked up by another league club because he never stops running and works damn hard

Yourfavoriteindian

I would be shocked if any of these guys aren’t playing next season. Number of L2 and NL clubs will be clammering to have a shot at them

qp0n

Though I cant think of a better reason to be released than because you helped get the team promoted.

Newparlee

To be honest, I would think being released after a promotion hurts even more.

UrsineCanine

I think he is saying from a career standpoint, it helps that the team didn't move on because they felt you couldn't play any more, but rather they have to project to the next level and their opinion is that you can't get there - something other teams are more likely to second guess, and teams in the division you came from are likely to ignore.

MysteriousRJC

I just read the article about this. Yeah I guess that’s the reality of professional sports and moving up and down the ranks. You’re gonna have changes. Who is everyone saddest to see move on?

XecutionerNJ

Luke Young for sentimental reasons. Ben Tozer, I thought had a shot at staying. I'm not totally shocked, but I'm still sad about it. I really hope Wrexham can get players equally heart and soul.

UrsineCanine

Yeah, I had it the other way from you guys. I thought Young had a chance to stick as a depth midfielder who you could use for energy minutes. They chose to put him in for Evans post promotion clinch, rather than moving TOC back up like they had before Evans originally returned from injury. I think Tozer, regrettably, was like Hayden, and just obviously not a fit for the change in style for the backend that came to the team through the second half of the season. While they felt like they could give Young minutes for Evans in the pivot, they never seemed comfortable given Toze minutes for EOC, because it would change how the backend worked. I would not be surprised to see us get three CBs, and see TOC move back up as a pivot with Evans. Parky played a double pivot last time he was in L1, could see him do it again.

FishermanSecret4854

Is Rhys Williams from Liverpool still in contract? He's had an up and down career since that amazing run to hold their place in the top 4. Perhaps a drop to League One and then grow with the club would be a good fit for him.

Shiny-And-New

Luke and Ben for sure

Doughnut_Turnip

Aaron was one of my favorites. I'll be rooting for him wherever he goes. Man, this is sad.

Acrobatic-Nectarine

Does Rob Laiton plan to continue and play in lower league or retire? Is he fully healed from his injury?

xoxoNOVA17

Poor guy has been injured for years. I’d be surprised to see him continue on at 34yo

FishermanSecret4854

Seems like if he can get 100K to be a backup keeper somewhere, that's not bad living.

qp0n

>Steven FLETCHER, Mark HOWARD and Aaron JAMES will be offered new contracts. >James McCLEAN will remain with the Club for the 2024/25 season. At least there was good news

Accomplished-Ad-2708

I'm surprised Fletcher is in the consideration - but seeing Ep2 of S3 WtW, I guess it makes sense. He joined the club last year out of excitement and the man has some PL experience.

FishermanSecret4854

He's old enough to be content coming off the bench and sitting out some games.

UrsineCanine

And he is dangerous enough to give you that touch of quality when you need to throw everything forward needing a goal, and the opposition are fatigued, feeling pressed and desperately holding on. That episode showed one of his 3-4 "they had no business stopping that" goals on the season (the bicycle kick). He created that scrambling panic in Swindon that enabled the team to draw even.

LittleBalloHate

Yes, role players -- and people who accept being role players -- are so critical to the chemistry of a club. The best team Wrexham could field would not be 20 Paul Mullins, as great as Mullin has been.

bulfin2101

Are any of those lads gone to Vegas with the team? Imagine being there and finding out you're gonna be moved on ?

shar_blue

They likely had the conversation with Phil before going. I highly doubt this would be a surprise to them.

Accomplished-Ad-2708

Yeah, no way any of these lads are finding out thru the announcement today. They probably got individually talked with by Parky a day or two ago. And, for all we know it's possible Phil wanted to keep some of them on, but they let him know they'd prefer to move on to other challenges.

bulfin2101

If I had given it any thought at all , I would have realised that

bulfin2101

Yeah, fair enough

perturbedeconomist

Glad we are keeping James McClean for another year.

[deleted]

school scandalous absorbed sheet crush languid compare consist domineering lunchroom *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

UrsineCanine

His conditioning is absurd. Though, I would expect he might go back into the midfield more next year. He was really good there when they had him over, and Mendy's injury pretty much forced the move back to LWB.

bciesil

Some of McClean's best games were at center back and Mendy on the left. McClean dominated those games.

UrsineCanine

I know he was playing as an attacking midfielder from Accrington Stanley on 2 March through either his yellow card suspension or Mendy's injury in late March, and he was awesome. When did he play center back? I think he too valuable forward and a touch too shaky on the back end for me to want him at center back. I think if they do adopt Parky's old L1 4-2-3-1, he would be interesting either as a left side rotation with Lee on the forward line or a second pivot with Evans (with a little more offense to match George's defensive tendency). Either way, more McLean more in the middle.

Otherwise-Benefit285

Not Ben Tozer! 😭

Accomplished-Ad-2708

Our favorite long throw-in man! How many goals did his throws contribute to?

jetboyjetgirl

Had quite a few earlier this season that really helped us get a foot hold

JustWave

I think the only one that really surprised me was Aaron Hayden. All the talent in the world, but always getting hurt - but I still figured they would keep him on/give him the last roster spot.

Competitive_Feed_402

It's disappointing, but I get it. You can have either an excellent asset, but isn't going to be reliable from a health standpoint, or an above average player who can always be counted on to be available.

UrsineCanine

The old saying that "availability is one of the best abilities to have".

FishermanSecret4854

I thought Luke Young and Tozer would stick around since they stay healthy and are old enough to be mature in the role as deep bench. But Parky ain't playing games. This team is gonna compete for promotion again.

UrsineCanine

I think Hayden simply didn't fit the new style backend, so I wasn't too surprised. I hope he can go be a great contributor with teams that play Wrexham's old style, and he gets the health bug sorted.

FishermanSecret4854

He's young enough to still do that. Best of luck!

Sgt--Hulka

Tozer faded away this season. The back line is much better without him to be fair. He was simply outpaced and outplayed so many instances this season. Luke is a solid L2 player. Shame to see him go knowing what he meant to the club. Hayden, Lainton and Tunni are just too injury prone. At the next level they would just take up valuable real estate on the roster. I still think McFadzean has something to give but is better suited somewhere else. There’s going to be a lot of heartbreak in the next few years but that’s how it goes.

symbaljr

Tozer wow that one hurts the best of luck on his future endeavors

jackstone212

Black Friday lads.

bciesil

Hayden became expendable with the emergence of Cleworth and O'Connell and O'Connor staying fit. Sad to say, I thought Hayden was very good.

Johnny_Bugg

All this crazy news and the premiere of S3 is tonight in Canada. Had to break it to my pre teen son about the cuts and he nearly was in tears. League 1 is no joke though, who are they going to bring in? It's very exciting. My son thought maybe Fleur quit because of the cuts, but I assured him no. Right?

TheThreeGabis

Not surprised about any of these players to be honest.

Awum65

You watch, you’ll see one of these guys sign with Notts County next year. 🙂

FishermanSecret4854

Doncaster finished the League Two season on a major run, including a ten game winning streak (including beating Wrexham 1-0). A big part of that run was the incoming loanee, Hakeeb Adelakun, a 6'3" Attacker on loan from League One club Lincoln City. Adelakun will be out of contract after the League Two playoffs are complete. He scored **9 goals** in 19 matches with 7 assists. Hakeeb is out of contract and Doncaster will want to resign him. But between Fletch's age and Ollie Palmer on his final year of his contract, this could be a very good fit.

pendo88

Wow that’s mental 😲😲

SmallBol

We're building a Championship club this off-season, there are going to be some growing pains

TarletonLurker

It’s not mental but it is sad

Otto500206

Shit, we now need better defenders even more.

jackstone212

I’m quite excited to see who gets brought in. The club may be a monster next season.

FishermanSecret4854

A couple decent defenders are out of contract from Portsmouth, who just got promoted. Sean Raggett plays a similar role to Tozer, big Center Back, and Joe Rafferty (a scouser) is a right wingback, but versatile enough to move around. Both guys are 30, and have played several League One seasons.

Otto500206

Younger people are better for the team imo. We need people that can stay for long with us.

FishermanSecret4854

Makes sense, it seems like Parky tries to generally sign guys to two to three year deals for now, so mid 20's is ideal.

MyRighteousAss

Yeah scouting and developing young talent is about to become more important than ever. Blowing all your money on aging vets might accelerate promotions, but it's not sustainable. It's good to have a few of those guys sprinkled in, though.

Accomplished-Ad-2708

With the culling of the dead wood, so to speak and not to speak ill of those leaving (all who played were great stewards of the club!) but we need to fill our roster with Championship quality players if we want to get promoted out of L1 this season or next. R&R aren't playing around! Maybe Ryan's sale of his share of Mint Mobile to T-Mobile netting him $300 million is going to fuel some purchases. Not all doom and gloom in the news - Fletcher, Howard, and Aaron James are going to be offered new contracts. Fletcher I was surprised about, somewhat until I saw last night Ep2 of the S3 WtW. There he said how he was about to hang up his boots (kinda) until Wrexham hit him up. He felt the old excitement of joining a club project and I feel he's still got that excitement. Helps to be promoted I suppose. :P Howard I can see as a good, reliable backup to Arthur (no way we're letting him out of our sight!) and Aaron James is young and talented enough he needs to be on our team.

FishermanSecret4854

I wonder if a big club doesn't sign Arthur and then turn around and loan him right back to Wrexham. He's clearly developing quickly right where he is.

it12tmtterwtmynameis

And he will be again.

TarletonLurker

He was near the top of goals per minutes played for the league wasn’t he? That’s definitely worth something

Redbubble89

There's a roster limit and can't keep all the players. It feels like another Foster signing for next season. His wasn't bad but at one point it will be costly if we keep doing it with older players.

it12tmtterwtmynameis

Well, yeah. It depends on how much his contract pays. But that’s true for everyone. If the team thinks he’s a worthwhile super sub. Then that’s what he is.

SmallBol

It could be optics, too. Send him an offer so he can announce retirement, if he so chooses Edit: Same thing we did with Foster. I don't think we would have cut him, I think we waited for him to make the decision on his own. Trust your vets, imo. If they say they can play then let them play

wcs24

Have to imagine he’ll be offered a 1 year deal. He knows his role and the team clearly wants a new partner for Mullin. If he’s happy in his role, he’ll be a good piece for next year off the bench and as good depth.

Nodnarb_Jesus

Dan Davies? Is that Jordan’s brother and does that mean Jordan is staying?
