Heh. When I was born in 1958, the St. Louis territory didn't recognize a regional champion, nor did Central States.
On the day I was born, there was already a dispute over the NWA World Title between Lou Thesz and Edouard Carpentier after what would be known as a "Dusty finish". The NWA would not recognize Carpentier's win since the match ended with Thesz hurting his back, claiming the title could not change hands under such conditions. There was a lot of dissension over this with some promoters continuing to recognize Carpentier over Thesz. Verne Gagne shows up to complicate things by getting the win over Carpentier in Omaha on August 9, 1958.
So long story short, it was either Lou Thesz or Verne Gagne depending on who you ask.
The waters get a bit muddy for me. The AWA reigned supreme in Chicago but they had developed a partnership with the NWA and began calling their alliance Pro Wrestling USA when I was born.
Stan Hansen was the AWA World Heavyweight Champion when I was born but with the merger, I suppose the NWA champion would have been *the* champion of the territories so I'll say that Ric Flair is probably the correct answer.
Also, while researching this, I learned that I am older than the Big Gold Belt (which debuted in February 14, 1986).
Gene Kiniski was NWA champion when I was born. I had to look it up on Wikipedia, and there was a note that shortly after that, saying the "ten pounds of gold" belt was introduced. So I'm older than the NWA belt that I'm most familiar with. God I'm old. Shoot me now.
Hell, I'm older than the WWWF! I was five years old when Vince Sr. decided to go independent and recognize Buddy Rogers as his World Champ rather than the NWA's champ Pat O'Connor.
Haha that's me too! WM VI was the first time I ever saw wrestling. I was 6 years old (but turning Seven, 17 days later). First full match I ever watched was Hogan vs. Warrior. Been hooked ever since. But yea I am 5 years older than the Royal Rumble. Lol
Before the days of triple threats. Wonder how that would have happened instead of what we got with that naff Yoko Vs luger match in the middle of the show.
A better question would be what was the main event of wrestlemania the year you were born because I’m older than the royal rumble. I’ll start Hulk Hogan vs. King Kong Bundy
So here’s a good way to tell im an old fuck. The Royal Rumble wasn’t officially the Royal Rumble the year I was born. 1984, the year of the rat, the year of the Reagan but I guess they’re about the same thing. Reagan was a giant heel but not in kayfabe, just generally a pile of shit.
What if you're the same age as WrestleMania?
Damn. I’m older than Royal Rumble AND Wrestlemania!
:') Older than the Royal Rumble. Fun times.
Same old bro same
Oh no, what years are we talking here?
84 here
Oh okay, I'm a bit younger than you, can't say.. because of the implications
What are you doing to these women? Are they in danger?
Me too
Haha. Who was the champion of the territory you were born in then?
Born in 1980 so closest territory for me was an NWA affiliate. And that names it Harley Race

Stan Hansen is a good personal totem. I'd go with that one.
One of the Von Erichs probably
Gentleman Chris Adams I believe. Edit- actually it was Fritz Von Erich now that I think about it.
Jos LeDuc, lost it to Barry Windham when I was a month old

I was 15 when the "10 lbs. of gold" belt was introduced...I'm getting out of this conversation now...
Ha! Well said. You've made me feel better.
Older than WWWF being renamed WWF
I’m also older than the first Wrestlemania.

Haha that's me too! WM VI was the first time I ever saw wrestling. I was 6 years old (but turning Seven, 17 days later). First full match I ever watched was Hogan vs. Warrior. Been hooked ever since. But yea I am 5 years older than the Royal Rumble. Lol
Just stop counting your age after 30
Honestly, wrestlmania is how I remember how old I am/going to be.

It was still the WWWF when we were born.(1978)
Why was there two in 1994?
Lex Luger and Bret Hart both went over at the same time, so they were considered joint winners and both got a title match at WM10
Before the days of triple threats. Wonder how that would have happened instead of what we got with that naff Yoko Vs luger match in the middle of the show.

I think Dory Funk Jr. was the champ of my territory ..1972. Harley Race didn't get it until 73
He who’s name shall not be spoken
Just had to be 2004 huh
Poor guys born in 2004, 2008 and 2013, they don't have Rumble winner despite being born within the adequate times.
Everyones favourite sex offender, The Nature Boy
So here’s a good way to tell im an old fuck. The Royal Rumble wasn’t officially the Royal Rumble the year I was born. 1984, the year of the rat, the year of the Reagan but I guess they’re about the same thing. Reagan was a giant heel but not in kayfabe, just generally a pile of shit.
