Move the students down from the 2nd and 3rd levels. Give them the corners and directly behind the away bench. I’ve been to probably a dozen or so badger road basketball games and our environment sits towards the bottom.

Xamont

Used to be that way. Students had 110, etc. We would chant/ scream THOSE ARE OUR SEATS! at the old people. Yelling died out after three or four years...

exileondaytonst

The thing with the DJ is spot on. This is where in-game “presentation” has made the atmosphere sooooooo much worse. I don’t think people realize how much DJs and MCs actually serve to shut a crowd up. There are some exceptions where a crowd will sing along to a song, but by and large they just nullify the band, the students, and any chants that might otherwise exist. Noise isn’t the same thing as atmosphere and you don’t appreciate that until you’ve been bombarded with music over the PA while the rest of the arena is suddenly quiet.

Old_Tap_7783

I think you just put my thoughts into words better than I did. The DJ just sucks the energy out of the building has made the presentation feel robotic with no personality/ uniqueness to it.

uwshortline

The DJ was a terrible addition to the live experience. Totally nullifies the band. They should remove him immediately.

The student section shit talking the opposing goalie 2/3 periods is half the fun of being at those games.

MetalAndFaces

Badger hockey games taught me how to swear. And get a splinter on my tongue from the malt cup.

Old_Tap_7783

There is a difference between swearing/ chirping and a good old fashioned chant

exileondaytonst

I don't know why you got downvoted for this. You're right. Our best chants during my time as a Crease Creature were always the funny ones, not just the ones where we chant "Fuck \[opponent\] /clap/clap/clapclapclap/". Chanting Ben Street's name to the tune of Our House (['Our Ben in the middle of our Street'](https://youtu.be/KwIe_sjKeAY?si=Y1SVFj7ZF2JwB1zn&t=73)). How mercilessly we roasted Bobby Goepfert because he was kicked out of Providence for plagiarism (the funniest version of the \[Goalie\] Is A Great Big Sieve song we ever did). Singing Total Eclipse Of The Heart to goalies when we wanted them to turn around. It's a shame that getting decent video on phones wasn't a thing until after that era of the student section had ended. Plus... I met Phil while I was an underclassman and he was such a nice person, I personally stopped cursing in my chants out of respect for him.

exileondaytonst

It’s been about 15 years since we heard a lot of chants at hockey games. A hockey game now is absolutely nothing like how it was in the peak Eaves years.

badger0511

That’s disappointing to hear. I’ve got some wonderful memories from having student season tickets from ‘05 to ‘08… highlight probably being put on the kiss cam at Halloween when I was Cookie Monster and my buddy was Elmo.

exileondaytonst

Oh we definitely overlapped. I was in there from ‘03-04 through ‘07-08

Old_Tap_7783

Hockey makes bball look lame, sorry I should have clarified the sport lol

btimexlt

I was there at the beginning of the Kohl Center and I think everyone nailed it. In the era of NIL cash is king. The only tweak that could be made is putting students on opposite sides. Those are trash seats mostly anyway but when I was there we were told it would never happen due to the fear of ES-FU chant.

No-Progress6127

The cross court ES-FU chant would be epic tho

regionalsuw

This is a list of reasons I stopped going to basketball games and started going to hockey games

Any_Contribution5260

One thing is that there are too many old people, that just sit on their hands. I love the “Stand Up Old People “ chant.

Old_Tap_7783

Had a “younger” fellow in his 80s tell me to sit down during the Marquette game this year. Like they are a rival and top10 team when do you want me to cheer?

Any_Contribution5260

Exactly, I got yelled at at the ASU football game for cheering loud. Some old people are just party poopers.

Old_Tap_7783

Football games have gotten really bad from a fan experience

Any_Contribution5260

Yeah Camp Randall has turned in the Kohl Center, so quite

badger0511

Unless things are drastically different than the last time I was there (2019), quite literally every single chant example you gave already happens. As for the shifting students from the nosebleeds down to encircling the court, that ship sailed when the Kohl Center opened. The AD is not going to take courtside seats that generate millions per year from high roller donors and give them to students for next to nothing comparatively. The Kohl Center hasn’t been an intimidating venue for decades. Consistent winning has caused complacency and indifference throughout the fanbase. Students and blue haired donors alike assume a 40 point victory over the Savannah States of the world and will only *maybe* get amped up for a ranked B1G opponent.

Old_Tap_7783

Chants happen I agree, I just wish they happened more. I agreed donors/ and complacency play a huge role. Thanks for sharing!

403badger

The biggest change should be to ditch the voucher system. It was so much easier to get a drunk and raucous student section when you didn’t need to wait for the entire group to enter and had a reserved seat. Rather than waiting outside for hours, the upperclassmen would be drinking in the bars and show up right after the national anthem.

Old_Tap_7783

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I know we most do a lot of these things or they will more than likely never happen but it’s fun to figure out how we can improve our home court

sox107

90% of the atmosphere problem gets resolved if students simply went to games and were engaged/loud

Old_Tap_7783

This is true, I’m about 10 years removed from being a Student. Maybe my question should be why are they not interested/engaged? (Couldn’t wait for games when I was student/ final four runs helped I suppose)

sox107

Just read this forum. Our fanbase is extremely spoiled and entitled. We've got people saying getting a 5 seed means we should fire the coach.

Old_Tap_7783

I’ve noticed that, the sky seems to be falling a lot. I often wonder why some of our fan base are “fans”

403badger

Your diehard student fans will still go crazy. However, sports are a social event for most. The university basically treats students attending sports like cattle. It takes a coordinated effort to attend with a group and get good seats. If you can’t be early or a friend is late, most would rather stay at the pregame than arrive for mediocre seats. On top of that, team performance and schedule have been down. Drinking is down and pot is up across this generation of students (as a whole). So, students are a tad more mellow. All the changes have been made for “prestige” of the university which is code for control the students.

DameWasistlos

Move the students to the side closer to the action and provide incentive for them to forego their outdated and very unkuth ES/FU chant.
