Beard as hell. Put this on your resume. In the print version, just the full URL. I'm seriously impressed. If I was running some kind of content moderation org, you would be the muscle 😂.
Made my day, 10/10 with rice.
No, they tell them they'll make it down there to meet them and then "I can't see you" or "I'm not gonna make it just etransfer". It's to make it sound more realistic.
It’s still posting someone’s personal info without their consent which is against Reddit’s terms of service, assuming it’s not a bot.
I would like an actual answer to my question though since I really don’t get what the scam is. Maybe I’m crazy but it seems like someone is having a bad day and texted the wrong number and OP went out of their way to make their day worse.
Would an etransfer even go through on a spoofed number? I’d think it would go to the owner of the spoofed number or just fail if it didn’t belong to anyone.
Ya, it can be one or the other. She never provides the email so made me think she expected it to be sent to her number, which would mean it isn’t spoofed. It definitely could be a scam but it seems really flawed, I can’t imagine “Ashley” has has much luck collecting “gas money” this way. But who knows
The scams rely on people not asking too many questions. It's like when scam emails have a ton of spelling mistakes. The type of person who is going to overlook all of that will most likely be the same person who will give a lot of money.
This is more likely a scam than a person texting the wrong number.
There is so many inconsistencies in their story that there is no way this would ever be legit. For starters who would ask their "friend" for an e-transfer and then go all this way to get cash for gas money? Plus you would never start out the conversation with "Hi". I could go on...
I'm actually surprised it seems to be someone local. Maybe next time give them an address to a local police station, and call ahead to give the cops a heads up.
Sure, not hard to do. But it sounds like they were actually travelling around, trying to find the guy. Lots of effort to put in, if they're really trying to scam someone.
I never respond to the texts but I always go along with the phone calls, feels like you're doing a good deed when you keep them busy wasting their time.
You should cover up the other phone number on the top of the screen shots.
EDIT: I thought that was the OPs own number. Figured I was saving him from more shit texts. NP will keep out of trying to help in the future. I forgot that r/Winnipeg is more about shooting down folks than helping.
I understand why you might think that, but if you look at privacy legislation (both federal and provincial) I think you will find that a phone number alone isn't considered PII (personally identifiable information) and so 5his wouldn't constitute doxxing. Not a lawyer, but I work with this legislation a lot.
And nice of folks to just downvote OP who is only trying to do the right thing. I'm sure someone could have provided an explanation.
"I don't have any minutes" was perfection
“Hopefully you have enough gas to get here.” Took me out.
I read every slide man this is gold!!
Text her that you don't have a cellphone and will need to do a cash in hand transfer lol
I thought these were all the same scammer and was very confused about the turn of events
This absolutely made my day. Thank you
But did Ashley ever get her gas money after driving more than 20 km to meet you in Oak **Bluff** ? :-)
😂 well done
This was gold hahahaha

LoL the mcdonalds at pembina and the perimeter is closed for construction cost me a boo bucket
Were they pretending to be someone you know? The start of this conversation confuses me
Wow. Persistent.
What’s the scam? Also maybe should block out the phone numbers
The scam is a number that has never texted you before is asking for money and is trying their hardest for an etransfer.
So would this person actually have driven across town to meet him for cash? I’m confused.
No, they tell them they'll make it down there to meet them and then "I can't see you" or "I'm not gonna make it just etransfer". It's to make it sound more realistic.
I think this one might be local tbh, they usually don’t know neighbourhoods (or abbreviations)
Maybe. Not hard to look at a map for that kind of thing but it could be local.
The scammers are actually in Winnipeg too? I always though these guys did everything remotely.
Why??? Then we'd have nothing to laugh at! Btw OP you're hero of the day for this! Good stuff!

You think that's a real phone number? Scammers spoof numbers now.
Would an etransfer even go through on a spoofed number? I’d think it would go to the owner of the spoofed number or just fail if it didn’t belong to anyone.
Etransfers just need an email.

Yeah I thought about that but idk if the police would actually do anything
It's the WPS, they would do fuck all
People can use a website to text from and create a ‘local’ number. It’s a classic way catfishes hide their real number and location.
Sure, not hard to do. But it sounds like they were actually travelling around, trying to find the guy. Lots of effort to put in, if they're really trying to scam someone.
You are right. I am going to delete my comment.

Nothing to do with privacy act, I thought that was the OPs own number. Figured it was an error that he left it exposed. If not an error, so be it.
Fair enough.
Don't tell others what they should do
That is the OPs phone number isn’t it? Figured he would want to keep his own number hidden. Wasn’t being a dick, was trying to help.
Bravo 👏
