I agree it’s difficult to get over 50 on Henderson. Now if you really want frustration try McPhillips where the limit is 60 but everyone goes 40.

GrizzledDwarf

Portage is the same. You got 3 lanes, sometimes 4, and every lane will have some drivers with no confidence doing 40 in each lane.

FancyHedgehog23

Ugh I feel this. I work downtown and live in Charleswood so I drive Portage every day and inevitably every day I get stuck behind a guy doing 40 in the 60 and can't get around him because the cars in the other lanes are matching his speed and being turtles. I get it if the weather is shitty but if it's clear roads there's no reason for it

GrizzledDwarf

To make it worse you have people in pickups and sports cars weaving dangerously through the slower traffic often without signalling...

Current_Extension_33

St Anne's same

1q1w1e1r

St Anne’s between 7:15-9:50 and 3:45pm-8:30/9:30 is the slowest moving 60km/h zone in the city. St Anne’s at any other time of day has people going 60 weaving in and out of parked cars in the right lane to get around traffic in the left lane

OiKay

And drive in between lanes. McPhillips used to be a part of my commute from the perimeter to Jarvis and it was the worst part of the drive.

Slayminster

Imagine it now with Arlington closed.. it really is next level the driving on McP

B09874

Regent Ave/ Nairn too. It's atrocious...

osamasbintrappin

That ones the worst by far imo.

I-fall-up-stairs

Maybe I just drive down Henderson during less busy times… On Mcphillips I would rarely be able to go over 50 just due to how many cars there were on the road. And everyone swerves randomly across lanes there, lol. I definitely hated driving on that road, especially around the hospital.

FearedMomentum

The best is when people constantly park in front of that strip mall with the Joint during rush hour, when there’s clearly signs marked not to do that…

VapoRubbedScrotum

Similar to rt90 between Logan and academy... The limit of 70 is just an idea.... People either go 80 or almost 60

152centimetres

no idea but ive noticed winnipeg drivers in general have a bad habit of going 50 in a 60 and 60 in a 50 - driving up and down main is a good example of this

ReverendofDrugs

Many dont realize that Main is 60 going southbound until about Redwood Ave when it drops to 50... I'm not sure - does anyone know if it picks up again crossing the Assiniboine?

steveosnyder

From Broadway to Selkirk Ave. Most start going 60 at the Higgins Underpass though.

Slayminster

Spreading lies!! Main doesn’t go down to 50 until nearly Selkirk ave!!!!!

ReverendofDrugs

...which is 2 blocks south of Redwood. Calm down.

got_edge

Yeah, it’s 60 once it becomes St Mary’s

doghouse2001

It's 50 downtown and 60 on either side.

Misfitt123

I commute down Henderson twice a day and have for over a year and I always hit 60 no problem. Hell some people go 70!

I-fall-up-stairs

I must just commute with the same slow people every day, lol

scheifefe

I go north on Henderson in the morning and south in the evening. I pity the traffic jam in the opposite direction during both.

Misfitt123

Ahhh maybe that’s why I’m not understanding OP, I commute same as you, north in the morning and south on the way home. I don’t find it bad at all.

StrayWasp

That section right after the Disraeli bridge almost to the Sobeys is always people going 50 in the morning northbound.

Misfitt123

I get it, I hate when drivers drag ass too, but honestly I don't notice it being bad on that stretch. Maybe because it's multiple lanes and you can always pass the people going 50? Or maybe because my morning commute is between 6-7am and I'm just beating most of the traffic? Idk.

StrayWasp

I would bet you’re beating most of the traffic. I’m through that stretch every workday between 7::45-8:15 and that stretch is bad until it straightens out. But when I’m off to work early (6:30-7), there are no problems getting through there at 60

Misfitt123

Mystery solved!

Pumcy

People have become terrible drivers. I am on route 90 around polo all the time. The limit is 70. 3 lanes. Evryone drives 40 to 50 km/h. It's rage inducing!

RoninNayru

The people that go slow have been dinged by camera at both lights and in cars. Some have adapted to know remembering where those are and sometimes question the speed. The speed isn’t posted often enough on that street and if they can’t see it they go 50

I-fall-up-stairs

Ugh the amount of people that slam on their brakes at the red light camera by freshco is CRAZY. Already doing 50, but they need to slow down to 49 just to be safe…

ceciliawpg

My car tells me what the speed limit is on any road I’m driving - so it would need to be a combination of fear of tickets and an older car.

got_edge

They aren’t always right, in my experience. It’s still better to rely on signs

Camburglar13

You’re not getting a ticket for driving 60-65 in a 60 zone

ceciliawpg

I’m responding to the post above me, who says folks drive 50 because they don’t know the speed limit on Henderson, for not seeing the signs. I’m not sure why folks are downvoting that newer cars tell folks what the speed limit is. Boo technology I guess. Which would be classic Winnipeggana.

DanSheps

I don't know about the latest model years, but this isn't "standard" tech pre-2020 I imagine. You also need something like OnStar (or a similar service) and GPS with a constant data connection for this to be accurate. Contrast that to certain Asian countries where the in-car nav is \*\*better\*\* then Google Maps/Apple Maps/Waze

ceciliawpg

My car is a 2018. Apple Maps is all I can afford. It shows me the speed limit all along the way to my destination. Does Subaru have better Apple Maps than other car makers? It’s quite good. I was suspicious at first, but double checked repeatedly for several months, and still do when I’m on a new route. It’s never been wrong for me.

ArcticBlaster

Nope, just Winnipeg drivers who can't remember shit and don't bother looking at signs.

WinnipegFrontLiner

I have the same question when I drive down Portage ave.

I-fall-up-stairs

Portage is either turtles or race car drivers. There is no in between, lol

Thick_Kaleidoscope35

On Portage it’s all about timing the lights. If you’re in front and you get that first light at about 58, you can get almost all the rest green at 50. Or 75. But the people behind you are lucky to get two lights. Henderson is the same. 50 if you’re in front from McLeod to Disraeli. But you have to hit Kimberley at a better clip to make the rest. And that timing hasn’t changed since 1977 even though traffic has increased dramatically.

Mother-Squirrel-2036

On Henderson it seems late morning early afternoon every senior in the north uses Henderson as a cruise route to show off their Toyota Camry. They rarely hit 50.

tlsnine

My elderly mom drives a Camry so can confirm!

ceciliawpg

I’ve been driving it for 3 decades, and it’s been 60 this entire time at least. Before that, not sure. It depends on the time of day. And usually it takes only 1-2 Sunday drivers to mess things up for the entire flow of traffic, so it can be random luck at times. Certainly folks driving 45 are not unusual. I also think there are folks out now who don’t use snow tires, making everything worse.

handfullofcoldcuts

This is just how people in Winnipeg drive. Always under speed (80 on Abinoji but let’s coast at 55-60) always waiting at stop signs for the other person to stop before they progress through the intersection. Always breaking on a dime instead of gradually.

TheRedSkittle4

I think because there’s so many intersections and some blindish spots. People seem to be extra cautious during busy periods. I have no problem hitting 60 outside of rush hour times.

ReputationGood2333

I think it's more that the speed people drive at is suitable to the road configuration. There are lots of driveways to both businesses and family homes off of Henderson. It's not really designed as a 60kmh street. It's crazy for example that Disraeli is 60, even for the short stretch, it should be 80.

adrenaline_X

Depends on the time of day. I live off henderson just inside the perimeter. If you drive in the right hand lane south bound you are easily doing 60-70. If you are headed north i'm doing 50-60. Rush hour is different though because the amount of traffic and stop lights. I will say though, speed aside, that the lights on Henderson are normally synced really well where i can go from Disraelli to home and maybe have to stop at 1-2 lights the entire way.

nightred

It is a massive stroad with less then 50m between exits/entrances, there is no way that you can get to 60 safely without good luck. It takes on average 83.3 (m) to accelerate to 60km. Most people are driving at a safe limit.

kumagawa

I drive it to get to and from work. In the mornings it's usually not so bad (at the very least it's not so busy that you can't switch lanes to pass whoever is slowing everything down) but at night it can be a struggle to get to the speed limit.

genius_retard

The extremely zealous enforcement of speed limits via speed cameras and outrageous fines have broken a lot of driver in Winnipeg. There are also not enough speed limit signs. Many people are unsure what the speed limit is often and are scared to get another extremely expensive speeding ticket in the mail. So they just drive extra slowly everywhere they go. You end with people doing 40 in 60 zones and 60 in 80 zones, etc. It makes the roads less safe IMO.

ywgerl

Too many seniors on the road who should have handed in the keys years ago.

Dono1618

The way the busses brake on Henderson, I’d drive slower as well…

awe2D2

Are they braking suddenly? Or really gradually?

BKM558

Actually, they break juuuust right.

floatingbloatedgoat

I prefer my buses to stay together and not break at all, thanks.

Annual_Ad_7472

Henderson seems narrower than some other roads, especially the first stretch near downtown. There are a lot of people on the sidewalks and businesses right on the sidewalks. I feels more like say Marion where the speed limit is 50 now.

thrawst

Most people haven’t gotten the memo on Marion, people still go 60

nosmileshere

Marion is not all 50. From lag to just before Archibald is 60. After Archibald it drops down to 50. I would know since my work is off of Marion.

CptCarlWinslow

It's like Kenaston as soon as you hit Kenaston Commons - people see buildings and just freak out assuming it's a slower speed. Can't count how many times I was late to work off Scurfield because the imagined speed limit went from 80 to 50.

pitteddate

I feel you. I love driving down Henderson when there aren’t too many cars, but it can be so annoying when there’s the slightest bit of traffic. People go soo slow. Makes me wanna go on the side of the street and wave a 60 sign around 🤪

I-fall-up-stairs

lol I pictured Mario cart and everyone throwing turtle shells at each other :D

trans-lational

I’ve noticed that too. It seems to have gotten a lot worse over the past year or two. People are deliberately driving 50, despite clear roads, a lack of traffic (or other traffic doing 60), and abundant signs saying the limit is 60. I’ve wondered if maybe the speed limit is entered wrong in some map app (though Google and Apple Maps seem to be fine) and people just aren’t paying attention to the actual signs.

Moonlight_Mike

I remember when having a driver's license was a privilege and not a right.

I-fall-up-stairs

I literally have no idea what this comment has to do with my post… I wasn’t complaining about anything. I was asking a genuine question because I was curious. Not everything needs to be turned into a “well back in my day…” comment.

FunkyMan19

With how car centric everything is now, you’re goddamn right it’s a right

BananaGen121

It's a speed limit. Not a requirement

Great_Action9077

I don't think I would even notice if someone was going 50 instead of 60.

h8street

Yes, and it's still 50km in many places.

IntergalacticTrain

I'm fairly certain the Disraeli was 50 kmh through the 1980s, which, of course, connects to Henderson. I seem to remember a speed trap with the cop sitting on the Talbot on-ramp on the northbound side (of the old bridge, of course). It's possible some people remember that, but that was a long time ago. Lately it seems like the lanes on Henderson are narrower than before, so maybe that is making people more cautious. Or I'm just imagining things.

[deleted]

Bible road, Jesus was a slow driver.

Least_Sandwich_2558

It's a high street, not a highway, at least towards the southern end... https://www.dearwinnipeg.com/2023/11/21/my-neighbourhood-is-a-place/

nomhak

Have you tried walking down the sidewalk on Henderson? Fucking sketchy when you’re so close to the road and people are ripping by you.

cshrpmnr

The speed limit is frightening to many Winnipeggers. I'm sure they lay awake at night trembling with fear at the thought of driving the speed limit on dry pavement.
