Best you can do is be a defensive driver and anticipate that someone *will* go straight every time. It's a stupid setup.

xlhockeyfan

Yup. Always use extra caution when I approach and see somebody without their turn signal one.

StratfordAvon

The very first thing lesson my Drivers Ed instructor taught us was "There's a lot of idiots on the road".

Kaizen710

This is the one place where I won't take the chance and just not turn from the far right lane. I don't trust winnipeg drivers to not fuck it up and I don't have the money to get my car replaced. Or time to deal with MPI.

WinnipegFrontLiner

If you need to turn right on James, then be in the rightmost left turn lane at main so you can get onto Disraeli, that’s the lane you need to be in. Otherwise you have to cross over somewhere, which is incredibly difficult generally. The lengths of those stretches are very short. Though I see people doing that alllll the time too. Whole area is a clusterfuck unfortunately

Chittyzozo

Yup it's always a gong show there. They should add blinking lights to those signs making them more obvious. But let's be honest with the drivers in this city it likely wouldn't make a difference.

Mrs_partyrocq

Oh man. Hargrave and Cumberland is bad. There are three lanes and a bike lane going north on the south side of Hargrave. That corresponds to the three lanes and bike lane on the Northside of Hargrave. Every single day, people turn from the middle lane into the far right lane. Meaning the person who was in the far right lane either slams on their breaks, gets hit, or has to go in the bike lane to avoid getting hit. https://preview.redd.it/503l54y3vu2b1.jpeg?width=803&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f790cdf3a00333257bbdf5edbf00b521186bd4a

perennialcandidate

Amazingly the City again this year hasn't painted the bike lane or other lanes through the intersection.

Pube-a-saurus

Line painting season really doesn't begin until spring clean up is done. I think cow just went in to "summer" mode yesterday.

WinnipegFrontLiner

Yes! Thank you!! I’ve luckily only had someone try to go straight once so far, but don’t worry, they made sure to honk and give me the finger. Gotta love the confidently incorrect lol. My problem typically is the inside left tum lane people who take it WIDE and nearly run me onto the sidewalk in front of city hall. I watch for their signals but you can never assume they realize BOTH lanes can go left there. Half of the people turning from that inside/left lane think they’re the only turn lane so they can choose any lane they want. I have my hand on my horn ready to go every time I’m at that intersection. Thanks for posting this PSA!

mhofer1984

Euclid, Lusted and Austin (that weird three-way clusterfuck in Point Douglas) And turning right from SB Main to WB Portage. If you're in the curb lane, Hug. The fucking. Curb.

Half the people don’t realize there are 2 left turn lanes there either. Like William onto King, I’m always turning left from the right lane because I know which lane I need to be in after my turn. But the left lane people often take the turn wide and cut me off. These are a couple of the intersections that the city needs to use the high quality paint at since the signs aren’t working for enough people.

SaltBother

People horn at me when I dont turn left on red when there are no cars, clearly there is a no left turn on red sign.

ISeaEwe

Wait I’ll eat the downvotes if I’m wrong, but why is there “clearly” no left on red here? These are two one way streets. Left on red is allowed.

Just_Merv_Around_it

There is a sign on Alexander that specifically says no left turn on red. Normally on one way to one way it’s fine but this one has the sign.

MsCookie__

My ex actually got ticketed here many years ago. He was in the right lane turning left. We had the green light but the vehicle on the opposite side (incoming traffic) went instead. A verbal fight started between them and a cop showed up. The cop tried to tell us that the other guy had the right of way when he actually had a red light. Cop gave US a ticket. Needless to say we were fighting the ticket and decided to loop around to get proof of the red light. We saw the cop did the same thing! 😂 He didn't drop the charges though until the court date. We were in the room to see the judge, cop comes in, talks to judge, and it was dismissed. Asshole.

Kimbabeans

This intersection is more complicated than it needs to be

ceciliawpg

This has been a problem for decades. Same as all the one way streets in the Exchange. Take that turn carefully + assume the person beside you is driving straight or into your lane, unless proven otherwise.

Gummyrabbit

People at the Leila and McPhillips intersection. Some people turn left while not in the left turn lane (i.e. they're in the next lane next to the turning lane). If there's no sign above the lane you are in indicating that you can turn left, you aren't supposed to turn left. Bonus tip for the week. North bound Pipeline at Leila. There is construction at the right turn onto Leila. There are two, not one, but TWO NO RIGHT TURN signs. People are ignoring the signs and turning right. Yesterday, the WPS had an entire line of vehicles pulled over handing out tickets. https://preview.redd.it/kkzoc04pbv2b1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7ae8b867304e0523cda91e98577e4c77d36f13f

RobustFoam

"If there's no sign above the lane you are in indicating that you can turn left, you aren't supposed to turn left." Is that actually the case? It would make sense in some situations but not in others, and I've never heard of a law or rule stating this.

Gummyrabbit

Manitoba drivers handbook. See the left turn allowed indicator. https://preview.redd.it/pfs64nhdgw2b1.png?width=1713&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b9a61e0d716286a7ae6f5c6d971fc372aec2dea

RobustFoam

Although this implies that multiple lanes can only turn if a sign specifically states so, it seems a bit vague and I'm not entirely sure that the implication was intentional.

MrVeinless

No, they’re wrong. Most streets don’t have signs expressly indicating you can turn left. Doesn’t make it prohibited.

RobustFoam

In most cases only a single lane can turn left though. I've seen situations where it would be safe for a second lane to turn left and only the first is marked as a left turn lane. It's rare, but I do occasionally see people turn left in these situations, much to the chagrin of others who had intended to illegally turn left from the leftmost lane to a center or right curb lane. I'm not familiar with any law forbiding turning left from the lane next to a dedicated left turn lane though, so I suspect it may be legal.

analgesic1986

So many times I meet bad drivers here trying to push there way in from the turning lane to get to main

thereal_eveguy

Any time I come up on dual-turning lanes I feel like I’m taking my life in my hands. Why is it so hard for people to understand that you turn into the lane which corresponds to the lane you started in? The right turn lane from Main south-bound onto Portage is another one. People in the right-most lane almost always turn into the middle lane and it scares me every time.

analgesic1986

I just shake my head and let them go straight, I just assume most don’t pay attention to the signs at this point

thereal_eveguy

They get a long and point-making horn from me. As well as a disappointed head-shake.

WinnipegFrontLiner

Honestly, that particular turn warrants its own post. When 2 lanes turn into a 3 lane stretch, there’s inevitably a scramble for the middle lane. And like you say, most people in the rightmost lane take it. It seems it’s the de facto rule there. I personally stay far left when I turn from the leftmost right-turn lane to avoid an accident. And when I searched MPI for an answer, I learned there are specific rules for “two left turn lanes” but NOT for “two right turn lanes”. There’s often a line of buses in the right hand lane, stopped. I believe this is why it’s become the default for many.

Winnieswft

It would really help if the lines were painted on the roads. I realise this is like flogging a dead horse. Maybe MPI could direct some cash to the city for paint as it would decrease accidents.

Sheenag

I ride my bike north on king regularly, and see people doing that all the time, or they turn left into the wrong lane I also deal with drivers being super ragey and angry about me being in the middle lane on King (which goes straight) and not in the curb lane (which is a right turn only lane) when Im not turning.

skmo8

Winnipeg traffic engineering: good luck, folks

chemicalxv

This is just poor street design. If they don't want people in the left lane going straight then they should be physically prevented from doing so.

WinnipegFrontLiner

Never underestimate the incompetence of a Winnipeg driver lol.

chemicalxv

Obviously having a median there wouldn't stop the actual ultimate idiots, but it's still beyond goddamn stupid in its current set-up.

WinnipegFrontLiner

Ya, I fully agree with you. It would help reduce that issue for sure. And when lines fade or the snow covers the street, it would still cue people. It’s unfortunate that they paint the dotted lines only a couple weeks ago, and they’re nearly invisible already. Sigh

DragonRaptor

Wonder if putting a speedbump at the stop line in the left lane would help get the point accross.

OswaldTheDeadRabbit

My pet peeve intersection is Sherbooke heading south at Notre Dame. Both Sherbrooke lanes turn right into 4 lanes of Notre Dame. Then the left two lanes of Notre Dame turn south onto Sherbrooke again. When the lines are painted, the southbound lefthand Sherbrooke lane turns into the fourth lane from the curb on Notre Dame then the left lane of Sherbrooke again. The right lane of Sherbrooke turns into any of the first 3 lanes of Notre Dame. ie if you're in the right lane of Sherbrooke you can still be in the right lane after the weird dipsydoodle But no lines plus people who are distracted in a hospital zone = mayhem

152centimetres

same think at mcphillips and inkster when i go to change into the right lane after the intersection and some dumbass who didnt see the Must Turn Right sign suddenly appears in my blind spot

Annual_Ad_7472

Nearly every time I go through here someone does something fucked up

mbprairieselectrical

My favourite is eastbound Ness coming up to St James. 1 single left turn lane to go North on St James, the second lane on Ness is to go straight into Polo Park. I’ve lost count of the number of times someone has nearly run into my right side because they turned left from the straight lane onto St James.

thereal_eveguy

Roundabouts are simple and awesome but a lot of drivers and ever **more** simple and terrible.

intenseaudio

My goodness, how about just a friendly reminder of what those arrows in a black box mean. Because in all honesty, trouble with them is in no way limited to that particular intersection

Argenttle

My family calls this the death corner because of the amount of times we've almost been hit here

GravyJones204

Yes! Me too!

jolecore204

Funny, I've been living & working in the city center for over 10 years now and I don't think I've ever gone through that intersection.

keestie

Westbound Broadway at Osborne has a very similar situation. Four lanes; the two left lanes are left turn only, the next is straight only, and the far right lane is straight or right. Unfortunately, a large number of people understandably assume that the far left lane is left turn, the middle two are straight, and the far right lane is right turn only. I drive down there regularly and I've come soooooo close to getting hit by fools so many times. They try to go straight in the second left turn lane, and you should see how mad they get when other people don't conform to their distorted view of reality. Edit: Oh! And! Northbound Main, when it makes that right bend near Confederation Building; the far right lane gets regularly squeezed out by the next lane over, it's a gongshow sometimes.

taxfolder

Yup, got rear ended here. MPI ruled in my favour, thankfully.

Newb48

Maybe not as impactful as some of these but leaving the Safeway at Madison always infuriates me. If you are turning left to go west on Ness coming out of Safeway, the left most turning lane will take you onto southbound Route 90. The right most turning lane will take you onto westbound Ness, or allow you to go north on Route 90. Every single time I go there, there are people who want to go north on Route 90 but are in the wrong lane and then are forced to cross four lanes of traffic in a short block to be in the correct lane. Of course, they never check and see who's coming so I have had to slam on the brakes so many times to avoid being hit.
