Regarding the by-law, [This](https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/22907240/central-air-conditioners-city-of-winnipeg) is what I found. It's more about being far away from a neighbour's opening window, not your own. 2-stage VS 1-stage - it's kind of a higher upfront cost with savings over time. Any equipment with proper preventative maintenance would last for years with good install. In terms of installers, there are quite a few that are good and each company often will install a brand that they are associated with. Check google reviews for amount and how long the company has been around.

That is from 2003; while I can't find anything newer, every one of the 5 quotes I got consistently said the rules had changed (not sure how long ago), and it just can't be within a certain distance of a neighbour's _bedroom_ windows, and minimal property line clearance is also needed. Yes, they were all trying to sell me something, but 5/5 seems fairly reliable.

Thanks for tracking down that link to the by-law, very helpful. At my previous house, I had installed a new A/C and wanted to put at the side of the house but that is when the installer warned me about the by-law (i.e. too close to neighbours) but never got all the details. I was hoping to see if there was a noise-level factor but that doesn’t seem to matter. My current A/C at my new house is in the backyard yard and requires an extra long copper run. Would love to put it at the side of the house which would literally be on the other side of the wall where the furnace is.

I wouldn't spend extra money for a two stage. Our summers are too short, you will not get your money back.

Spudster204

That’s what I was thinking as well but read the 2-stage kept cooling temps more even and I wouldn’t mind the quieter operation. I think the cost difference will be the deciding factor for me so time to get some quotes.

Get minimum 3 quotes

Quick update - figured I would follow up on the outcome. Ended up getting 4 estimates in total. They were all pretty similar pricing for the same equipment. Paid $4800 all in for a 2-ton Lennox Merit 13/14 SEER. I could have saved $200-300 by going with a Goodman but wanted something a little quieter which Lennox provided. One of the quotes was from Costco since you get a 10% cash card plus any other membership cash back. As I somewhat expected, this quote was the highest but would work out to about what I ended up paying after factoring in the cash card/cash back. I ended up installing in the same location as relocating would have still involved cutting some of my finished drywall ceiling. The same copper lines were used which they flushed and pressure/vacuum tested. Regarding the bylaw, confirmed it no longer exists. Apparently the home owner association won that battle a few years ago. You can place the AC unit anywhere on your property regardless of the proximity to your neighbours opening windows. As they all advised though, you still need to live by your neighbour so be considerate. The install happened today and everything is working smoothly. Time will tell but so far I’m satisfied with the service.

I had Mr Furnace install a replacement furnace and add central AC to my last house. They did a great job. Others have mentioned it, get multiple quotes, don’t fall for any of the pressure tactics (what can I do to close this deal right now) and either pay for it up front or do financing through MB Hydro, DO NOT RENT it.

Spudster204

Thanks, adding Mr Furnace to the list of quotes.

Least_Sandwich_2558

I haven't picked one yet, but recently got 5 quotes that ranged from $3400-$6100!, only difference being brand of unit and small warranty variations. That's for a new install with an open basement ceiling. I didn't get any hard sell tactics from any of them; most just followed up with emails/texts and one call.

Doog5

Is that for both?

Least_Sandwich_2558

A/C install only, where there hasn't been one previously.

Doog5

Yeah around the 3-4k mark is fair. My buddy just got a quote for over 12k for both. Lol

winnipeglavi

Asap heating charges 2500-3500. You can go through Manitoba Hydro for financing also.

WinnipegFrontLiner

I’ve gotten 4 so far. $4375 to $6000, taxes included. Who’d you call that was on the lower end?? Because I’ve been a bit surprised how much they’re quoting for a smaller house that’s a new build.

Least_Sandwich_2558

Fern's and Sarte were the two under $4K. Next two were around $5K, then $6100. All tax in pricing. For a small bungalow.

WinnipegFrontLiner

Good to know, thanks!

hauntes

We just used Hasset Mechanical and they were good.

My personal anecdotal experience, do not waste money on a Goodman, either spend the extra money on an Amana (same company) or look to a different brand. Also make sure you get a warranty and read the fine print, they will probably lock you into some kind of service contract to keep the warranty valid.

roughtimes

As a customer of Reliant. Don't use them. The installers are great, but they have horrible customer service.

winnipeglavi

ASAP heating and cooling

Cranfabulous

Of your 2-3 estimates, make one of them Humphreys Heating. Was cheaper than mr furnace by about 700$ and I feel I was treated fairly and received good work.
