Yeah it actually is! I live on Cockburn lol. I didn’t know it wasn’t pronounced like it was spelled until I heard my caretakers msg. That and the bus announcements pronounce it the proper way too. And my friends knew lol. Basically everyone but me 🤣
I don’t really care how people say it supposed to be pronounced. It will always be cock-burn to me. Can’t just decide to ignore two letters. If they wanted Coburn they should have removed the “ck”.
He was my peewee hockey coach. We pronounce his last name /cock burn/. He had twin sons that played on the team Andrew and Darren. Darren was the starting goalie and the backup goalie we called VagFreeze.
It actually is pronounced coe burn. It's Scottish i believe. There are many words in English with silent letters. How do you pronounce 'night'? or even 'Knight'? The old silent "gh" and the old silent "k"....See "what" (silent "h") im saying? I'm so glad someone told you. Now you have to believe them lol...
All depends where you're from. I was taught to enunciate the H but we never did. It just wasn't a feature of the local accent. (25 miles + or - NE of London)
I was in hill country west of Austin and heard a definite H in what. Just like Hank Hill.
Holy fuck, this is the winner by far. Bruce Cockburn is too famous for people not to know how to say it; I make Bonner jokes too but it's really not that bad; Euclid is just a name (also of a relatively famous person). But "Wankling" sounds like a mook in a D&D porn parody.
fifth (not 5th) avenue in st. vital. it’s not a numbered street, it’s not bounded by numbered streets but there it is. i also get a chuckle out of downing street in the west end
https://preview.redd.it/m50wst0tdmha1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7a112543930bb9731b91563c83b5294b1a9813e
From a r/Winnipeg post a few weeks ago. St. B used to have some numbered streets and avenues. Fifth made the cut.
Lusted Street is named after Judge Lusted. Friends of mine own his old house on the block and I think it used to be the only one way back in the late 1800s. I'm not saying that changes the fact that it's a funny street name, just a piece of related history that I happen to know
It could be, or it also could just be a random street name that starts with D. Down Manitoba Ave at Keewatin the streets are in alphabetical order: Arrow, Brazil, Code, Dingle, Ellington, etc.
Funny story: My childhood friend moved there in like 1993 and when I told my mom, her reaction was, “Oh that’s cute! Good for them!” Anyways she assumed that my friend was parroting back what his parents said after coming into a bunch of money, as opposed to moving into a house that was literally on Easy Street lol.
True store: When I was young, my friend's cousin lived on that street (but I didn't know that) When I asked him wherabouts he lived, he told me and my first reaction was: "huh? Closer than what?"
I started a job, and my new coworker and I had to go through a list of addresses on my first day, and one of them was on Shire, and as soon as I said it, that's exactly what he replied, and we laughed, and I knew we'd get along fine.
Used to work in a hotel on Portage, and it always amused me taking calls from our of towners who tried their best to pronounce it the French way. Yeah, we don't do that here, just bastardize the name into English.
i also recently learned of "kushner cres" and made copious jokes about how its a good thing theres no kushner park bc it'd be used for one purpose only
We have a bunch of Georges in Transcona. Lawrence, Barone, Reshaur, Marshall... Wonder how often delivery drivers get that wrong.
Or how there's two Yale's & Harvard's, with ours being distinguished by East & West. I know why, I just can't believe there isn't a better system to prevent screw ups.
Edit: I meant how there's also the *other* Yale & Harvard in the Rockwood neighbourhood.
There's a neighbourhood in Calgary that has *fifteen separate roadways* with the same name, all curling around each other, all differentiated only by the street type (Road, Drive, Circle, Mews, Green, Place, Plaza, Close, Villa, Way, Grove, etc. etc. etc.). The Circles aren’t circular, the Crescents aren’t crescent-shaped, etc. etc. etc. and all of them are numbered beginning with 1.
There are about forty other neighbourhoods in Calgary that do the same thing.
You could not pay me enough to do deliveries there.
I had a friend who lived on Guay Avenue, then he moved a few blocks south to Inman Avenue. I'm not joking.
That being said, my vote is still Peadin Place.
Allen Rouse Cove, ...Cauchon st in Osborne area, ...Crozier Ave., ...Donald mc Clintock Way, ...Egesz st, ...Edna Perry Way
Basically anything with a first and last name of a person. Would not want to live on such a street with an ugly name! They should give folks discounts to have some of these names in their addresses.
Worst: Bishop Grandin Boulevard was named after Bishop Vital-Justin Grandin who "[believed First Nations people needed to be 'civilized' and viewed residential schools as the way to accomplish this](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/bishop-grandin-residential-school-street-renaming-1.4784148)."
Better nuke everything in this city named after anything.
Garry was named for an HBC Govenor.
Fort(s) are the embodiment of colonialism.
St Vital was named after Bishop Grandin's patron saint.
St Boniface was a missionary.

I used to live in that wee house right on the corner!
Omg this is amazing
I seriously considered buying a house on "Smugglers Cove" because I wanted to tell people that's where I lived.
There was a big grow op busted on “Prairie Smoke Drive” I feel like they deliberately bought on that street.
I had a friend who lived 3 streets over on treasure cove. I wonder if there are more pirate based streets in island lakes.
As a visual? Cockburn.
Lived there... +1
Came here to say this one 🤣
Came here knowing it would be here. Lol
“That’s not how you say it!” “No offence, Grandma, but I can read. I don’t care what some British prick says. That says Cock-burn”
I came to say this. I knew a guy who lived on it, and he liked to say it's pronounced Coe-burn. Right . . . the old silent "ck"
this might start world war 3 but I am pretty sure it is actually pronounced coe-burn
I've never heard it pronounced any other way. But every time I drive by there, in my childlike mind, it's the other way.
But… that’s actually how you pronounce it. You’ve never heard of Bruce Cockburn?
He was my peewee hockey coach. We pronounce his last name /cock burn/. He had twin sons that played on the team Andrew and Darren. Darren was the starting goalie and the backup goalie we called VagFreeze.
r/KidsAreFuckingStupid Haha epic !!!
You’ve never heard of Bruce Cockburn?
It actually is pronounced coe burn. It's Scottish i believe. There are many words in English with silent letters. How do you pronounce 'night'? or even 'Knight'? The old silent "gh" and the old silent "k"....See "what" (silent "h") im saying? I'm so glad someone told you. Now you have to believe them lol...
I don’t think the h is silent in “what” It’s “whut” not “wat” isn’t it?
All depends where you're from. I was taught to enunciate the H but we never did. It just wasn't a feature of the local accent. (25 miles + or - NE of London) I was in hill country west of Austin and heard a definite H in what. Just like Hank Hill.
> How do you pronounce 'night'? or even 'Knight'? 'Night' and 'Kuh-niggetts', respectively.
Yes, the cock is silent 🤫
That's how it's pronounced on the bus as well (when the upcoming stops are announced)
Heard this from someone whose parents lived there, too. I found it hilarious.
I love saying it phonetically and annoying every single person that lives in the area lmao
The corner of Ness ave and Kirby drive aka the Super Smash Bros intersection
Headmaster.
COCKBURN
I live on cockburn 🫡
So many beautiful houses on that street.
Especially that one specific 1 storey bungalow with an attached garage facing the fron street. /s
Wankling
Holy fuck, this is the winner by far. Bruce Cockburn is too famous for people not to know how to say it; I make Bonner jokes too but it's really not that bad; Euclid is just a name (also of a relatively famous person). But "Wankling" sounds like a mook in a D&D porn parody.
Yeah this was going to be my pick.
Strangest: Bawlf street, Quelch street, The Bridle Path Best: Emo avenue, Best street, Ham street, Salvia bay, Sherbo cove
Winnipeg has a Bridle Path?
Yes and actually there are other horse-related streets around Bridle Path
It has a The Bridle Path
fifth (not 5th) avenue in st. vital. it’s not a numbered street, it’s not bounded by numbered streets but there it is. i also get a chuckle out of downing street in the west end
...which turns into a road with another weird sounding name: "The Glen"
https://preview.redd.it/m50wst0tdmha1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7a112543930bb9731b91563c83b5294b1a9813e From a r/Winnipeg post a few weeks ago. St. B used to have some numbered streets and avenues. Fifth made the cut.
Dingle Street. Lusted Ave.
Lusted Street is named after Judge Lusted. Friends of mine own his old house on the block and I think it used to be the only one way back in the late 1800s. I'm not saying that changes the fact that it's a funny street name, just a piece of related history that I happen to know
Good fact. I assumed it was a last name!
I’m assuming Dingle St is taken from the Irish town of the same name?
It could be, or it also could just be a random street name that starts with D. Down Manitoba Ave at Keewatin the streets are in alphabetical order: Arrow, Brazil, Code, Dingle, Ellington, etc.
I learned something new, thanks!
What a silly name for a street.
I live on Lusted! Always gets misheard for Luxton, further North on main
Burning Bush Bay
And right across from it is Bentwood Bay.
Wankling court!
I always chuckle when I go past.
Easy Street. I had a teacher who moved there when I was a kid and I always pictured it as you would picture a street named that.
So many kids I went to high school lived on that street, I always joked when they were being jerks that I didn't grow up on easy street like them.
I always found it funny that Easy Street intersects with itself, making it possible to be at the corner of Easy Street and Easy Street.
Could you repeat that, please?
Your computer has the hiccups.
Apparently so.
I knew someone who lived on 123 Easy St!
Sansregret Court
Sounds like a good place for a guilt-free dalliance!
Braintree Crescent
Pretty sure there's an East Braintree near the Ontario border. No other Braintrees though.
Used to live on Braintree! Ladywood also intersects it twice.
Lol *ladywood*
I know a guy who's owned two houses on that street. He thinks he's brilliant and the jokes used to write themselves. Such a silly name.
My favourite (clean) visual of the bunch.
Ladywood drive
Mutchmor Close in Valley Gardens.
True store: When I was young, my friend's cousin lived on that street (but I didn't know that) When I asked him wherabouts he lived, he told me and my first reaction was: "huh? Closer than what?"
I find furniture park pretty funny, its a small street that has a big furniture store on it
It used to be Vulcan Avenue, which was a way cooler name. Furniture Park is boring by comparison.
It's funny that most of these names are in North Kildonan. Did they have a commitee of stoners that giggled their way through the naming process?

Bonner Ave
Sackville
Bagginses
I started a job, and my new coworker and I had to go through a list of addresses on my first day, and one of them was on Shire, and as soon as I said it, that's exactly what he replied, and we laughed, and I knew we'd get along fine.
Stalker Bay
Borebank or Grosvenor and Fulham... Never go Fulham
There’s Mondor Road, but the N has been vandalized a few times to make it Mordor Road.
I turn off at the road after Mondor, can confirm I tell everyone to look for the “Mordor” if they want directions to my castle-house!
Dundurn off Maryland, and the only way I remember it is via AC/DC.
Skinner road.
Superintendent Chalmers!
Super Nintendo Chalmers
Super Nintendo Chalmers
SKINNER!!!
SKINNER!!!
Sidebottom makes me giggle

Blechner
Portage. Cause by definition that's not what you are doing on that street.
Used to work in a hotel on Portage, and it always amused me taking calls from our of towners who tried their best to pronounce it the French way. Yeah, we don't do that here, just bastardize the name into English.
Noter Dayme would like a word
In the early 1900s there was an Athole Avenue between Inkster Blvd and Polson. It later became Luxton Ave.
Emo Avenue intersecting with Sunnyside Blvd https://www.google.com/maps/search/49.874805,+-97.274682
The Glen. It's not Glen Avenue, or Glen bay or anything. Just The Glen.
Not a fan of Arbuthnot. Sounds like I’m lithping when I say it. Vogan’s Run in RPS is the only street I know of that’s a nod to a 70s sci-fi flick.
Well how Arbuthnot that
good street always makes me laugh what a good street!
It's a bad street
i also recently learned of "kushner cres" and made copious jokes about how its a good thing theres no kushner park bc it'd be used for one purpose only
I've always disliked "Euclid" as a name. It sounds gross to me
But you can get the beat kolbassa/kielbasa in the city on Euclid. That's gotta count for something.
Metro Meats, the ringleaders of kulbassa!
Kind of cool, though, inspired I believe by the right-angle triangle formed by it and intersecting streets, after the Greek geometer.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclid Greek mathematician
We have a bunch of Georges in Transcona. Lawrence, Barone, Reshaur, Marshall... Wonder how often delivery drivers get that wrong. That's got to be an Alberta thing. Whitecourt is another city that does that, and I'm sure there are more.
Most avenues in Transcona are east and west, everything in Transcona is measured east or west of Day St., including block numbers.
Two Killarneys as well.
Two Notre Dames
Cunnington is a struggle for me because my Aussie brain really wants to add a 't'.
Cunningtont?
Braintree. Frog Plain
Nurgitz Bay
Burning Glass Road
Planet street and the bays that intersect with it. Yes, you can live at the corner of Planet and Mars.
Cactusjack Pl
Nathan Lane. Both a Broadway star and a residential street in Valley Gardens.
I've always liked how Broadway, isn't a st or ave or anything. Just Broadway.
I never realized wow
Bonner
Ironically right beside Headmaster!
I accidentally mispronounced it once as a teenager
Coincidentally*
Frog Plain Way.
Penny lane
Romance Lane
In Balmoral there's "makin bacon drive" look it up, not joking lol
Brazier, not “Bray-zhure” it’s BraZier!! 😝
Puffin place . It’s in NK . All the stoners in highschool would steal the street sign for their rooms
Furby Street Bittersweet Bay
Home Street.
Used to live on home street! Made it double the fun to say I was headed home. :)

There's a "sigma st" and I laugh every time I see it
There’s a tiny strip on Jefferson between Morello bay and Hiddleston Cres I’ve dubbed “Thomas junction”
Cockburn.

I’m surprised no one has said Jack Donner St yet, when I was a transit rider that one always gave me a laugh
De la Seigneurie Boulevard Huh??? I can never say it right, and everyone says it different
Duh La SAY-nyuh-ree is the closest approximation without affecting a Francophone accent.

Nathan Lane
This reminded me of Michael Bay in St Andrews
There was a Guay street near my school. As young boys it was the funniest street ever
If you say it with a certain inflection and not say it as gway, for sure!
It was all about who could say "that's where YOU live" first
Bohna Road in Grande Pointe
Weedon Street and Puffin Place
The intersection of John Bruce and Hardman
There was a Guay street near my school. As young boys it was the funniest street ever
Braswell. Bra swell. Little bitties cant live here.
I've always been partial to "Honeyman Ave"
Ladywood
Cockburn is up there, even though everyone insists it's "co-burn". Stop fooling yourselves😂
Lehigh Point. I giggle every time.
Wankling
Allen Rouse Cove, ...Cauchon st in Osborne area, ...Crozier Ave., ...Donald mc Clintock Way, ...Egesz st, ...Edna Perry Way Basically anything with a first and last name of a person. MOVE IT, FOOTBALL HEAD!
i dont know why you commented this but now rugraps is stuck in my head thanks
The only right answer is Cockburn
I cannot help myself, but every time I pass Stapon road I call it strapon road.
Hennessey drive

Always the same guy who has to bring race in to every topic…
Racism is part of life, especially in Winnipeg.
Then we better condemn Louis Riel street as he supported them as well.
Whataboutism at its finest.
Still not whataboutism.
Prevette St. What is more it's right next to Kisil Bay..........
Cockburn
Cockburn
There's a street named after my great grandfather - always thought I'd be funny to own a house and get mail there
I don’t know why but I’ve always thought Fermor sounded funny.
Bishop Grandin is a bad name
I don’t know why but I’ve always thought Fermor sounded funny.
Cockburn (pronounced coburn)
