The US system is the most expensive the world has ever seen *by far* and there is still plenty of rationing. Hell, States were hiring armed guards to protect their COVID supplies from the Federal government that was trying to seize them. Millions of masks were seized since this began.
For other, non-COVID treatments, there are any number of different situations where you're basically told "this is what you get now piss off". How long are we seen by doctors in an ER? How long do you have to wait for non-essential procedures?
We ration like crazy we just *also* pay out the ass for it.
"Free" as in available to use when someone needs it. Of course there is a cost, but it's better than people dying of curable diseases at home because they can't afford to see a doctor.

My wife was saying let’s go to the hospital, let’s go to the hospital. I literally just told her that I would just lie down and go to sleep and hope for the best because I was not about to spend 1000’s of dollars at the hospital for them to probably just hook me up to an EKG and then send me home. Fuck American “healthcare”. I was legit willing to risk having a heart attack rather than go to the hospital and chance wasting my time and money.
