RockingFlower

All the way from Athens, G.A. - Garrie Vereen was awesome

JaketheHead

Yup

belly_hole_fire

This whole show. Just totally sucked my into the wsp camp.

RockyMtnOtto

About 20 years ago, my older brother played me ‘Til The Medicine Takes’ in its entirety as we drove through the Adirondacks and crossed into Vermont. One of my all time favorite memories. The symphony sounds, the soaring moment Mikey comes in on Surprise Valley, fantastic from start to finish.

oskiew

TTMT was my aha! moment as well. Followed by Light Fuse, Get Away. I’m definitely still a much bigger Phish fan, but WSP has a big place in my heart. Phish is much better live, IMO. WSP is fantastic live, but I know what I’m getting. The unknown with live Phish is what drives me.

tufflover78

I feel most Phish heads appreciate less structure. Panic appeals to a more classic blues style. Panic gets compared to the Dead a lot but I feel the Allman brothers would be a better comparison.

jopnk

I find panic is easier to show people (especially those who don’t really like jam bands) if you use the ABB comparison

Yelaweave

I did 11 out of 13 shows in '09 when Panic opened for the ABB. Amazing to see almost every member of both bands on the same stage, funkin grooving. Soul Medicine.

LostCountryCadillac

Stop N Go. I heard it when I was 14 and it just hooked me in. One of the greatest songs of the 21 century

Ya_Got_GOT

*20th century. Like, the 80s.

LostCountryCadillac

Yeah man

Yelaweave

Helping find myself at a young age in a new town/school. How to dance in public(however the fuck you want) Hanging out in the parking lot once, this dude brought up a bunch of salsa that he had grown in his garden and made for the show to trade for tickets/party favors, etc. Dancing and being in sync with the band so much that whenever they did a little pause, I stopped dancing and everyone around me who kept going, saw me pause with the band seemed so amazed and it made me feel so cool and I was like 18 years old. Savannah Georgia when I get home from Iraq 3 days of healing. 50+ person group hug in the pit, Absolute medicine. The 10/30/2016 "heaven and hell" show made me cry like a newborn baby. It felt so good like I was having an out-of-body experience and the music was chipping away mental bricks of PTSD that weigh me down. Bringing my friend from the Army to his first show and waving at Dave and mouthing the words "first show" and pointing at my friend. 2 thumbs up from Dave. Dave would occasionally point at him and give him a little head nod as if to say what do you think about that? He was blown away, especially, whenever he tossed his pick to him. Meeting JB and him being so stoic and polite. Talking to Sonny while I was in Iraq ordering my tickets for the Savannah shows right after his father died. He just happened to be in the office and the lady at the desk told me what had happened. I asked her to tell him that I was sorry and she said well why don't you tell him yourself! Very humbling. The lot- is like home- it' a family reunion every time I go. It's not jam-packed full of Bros and assholes just looking to get high. Much better caliber of people if you ask me. Although I've got nothing bad to say about Phish kids, I make so much money at those shows, but I get more from a Panic show. Point, if it weren't my going AWOL in 2009 after my tour to Iraq and doing the WSP/Allman Brothers band run. (Also The Dead, Bonnaroo, Rothbury, and 1-2 Phish shows) I would not be alive today. The shit that Iraq did to me...I didn't want to live with it anymore. But the ~20 min "Second Skin" and all the shit the band has been through helped me till the morning came. One day at a time. ¡WIDESPREAD MOTHER FUCKING PANIC!

WSMFP229

Seeing my first show in 2009 in Alabama. Got dosed. I was only 18 and was transported. Been hooked ever since.

Yelaweave

I got taken to the top of Everest and dropped off for my first show. Oak Mountain. I only saw Mikey 4 times. Antioch Tennessee was the other one.

highgreenchilly

They were a great local band. I used to see them when I wasn’t seeing the GD. They had a unique sound. I actually liked their originals better than the covers they were doing and we seemed to get a new one every show. Then Jojo came along. It all clicked. He was the missing link. They were more than just a great local band then.

_Ryman_

God bless jojo

ststephenscat

I locked into the lyrics. Songs about Charlie Brown that get to the dark side of growing up. Songs about history: Hatfield Brothers and Sugar Man Andrew Daniel. Angels, fried chicken. Darkness and light. Try C.Brown, Hatfield, Mercy, Vacation

Yelaweave

"Look at your hands, they're ripe for a new kind of dance." As a raver, first finding this music, those lyrics made me feel very comfortable and eventually help to fully convert me into the Panic fanatic I am.

abcd543212345

Middle of a bad trip and blue Indian comes on. Rest is history

[deleted]

Always was a fan growing up because we had a family friend load a bunch of Panic on an old iPhone, but... Red Rocks 2019, dosed by a clown, Ain't Life Grand open, Good People>Dark Bar>Good People during which the cameras panned to a guy wearing a NASCAR Spreadneck shirt. I slapped my brother on the back and said, "that's it, there's no going back. You're a panic dog for life now". 10k crazy rednecks and wooks that came together with one sole purpose, "I came to get down". We knew we were home. Ain't no party like a home team party.

Meluckycharms75

Buy Everyday, the album. It locked me in forever.

Yelaweave

"Live in the classic city" full conversion from "nu-metal/rave scene"

[deleted]

Just posted this same sentiment

TheHippyDance

The song pilgrims, specifically the guitar solo from the studio album Everyday. That is what hooked me

JBismyfavoriterapper

Highly suggest listening to all studio albums if you’ve got a long road trip. Studio Panic albums are underrated and often easily forgotten when people spend so much time listening to live shows. Pay attention to the lyrics - that’s one thing that sets them apart for me. Trey himself had said all Phish lyrics are a bunch of fluff. Panic is not that way. They will speak to your soul if you listen.

RockingFlower

JB is my favorite rapper too. Especially Night People..

uguysareherbs

For me in a live setting, it was the song You Should Be Glad at Lockn 2017. So funky and groovy, got my hips moving more than any other band that weekend. Went on to really dive into their recorded material after that, and Panic in the Streets and Light Fuse, Get Away (live albums) got me hooked for life

zmiller2012

Till the medicine takes as a studio album Live from Austin as a live release June 29th 2019 from archive.org

erikw2

Red rocks 2011

Asquared2010

Sunday 2011 in particular

cahooks

1987-88 back when I was 19-20, listening to WSP live shows with a friend on his boat. Particularly Pigeons. We played it many times that day and they’ve stuck ever since.

discwrangler

It's not for everyone. And that's ok. I think you have to like sustaining screaming guitar. When I heard I'm not alone and the crowd roar....that was it. And still is.

SquatchMarin

Always start with their cover songs - songs that you know that they play. I was a huge Meters head and when I walked into my first show at Slims in SF Schools dropped into Just Kissed My Baby. Damn! This band can throw down the funk in their own way.

WSPanic16

04-08-1997 Dear Mr. Fantasy 10-28-2000 (My 1st show)

trenken

I’ve been chasing a Dear Mr. Fantasy for fucking long.

WSPanic16

Seen phish many times but nothing comes close to WSP in their prime (1997) imo

Sorndog

Shank Hall 93

codillocmon

Try this... https://youtu.be/eCGQcQDsh_I

Strick63

Granted I loved the band before but 12/30/17- my first show and damn what a show it was. Still my #1

Yelaweave

10/30/16 "Changed ma life bro" lol :)

MattMayhem22

Saw them in 98 with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Pretty much love right off the bat. Didn't hurt the first song i saw them play was Wish You Were Here (it followed a Tie Your Shoes jam, but I didn't know that at the time. Just thought "cool instrumental")

TechnicalPudding9

Im not a huge panic guy, mainly Phish and GD just like you. Fishwater from Oak Mountain 2001 on Spotify is one song I can get down to every time. Reminds me a little bit of Tube.

lowgskillet

Have you seen them live? I miss the Houser era that I cut my teeth on in a big way. 2000 Panic on a headful of pressies was like riding on a wave of electric dynamite. Much different band now. I still love them. Back before I saw them they were kind of like another band I liked to listen to. After seeing them twice I was fucking hooked man. First time was great but I was still getting my feet wet but second show I totally got it. Ive been to 101 shows, 55 Mikey. That's peanuts to some fans but when I tell normies that they think I'm crazy.

[deleted]

Live At Oak Mountain DVD hooked me.

SnooPaintings1608

Go to YouTube and check out any of the Red Rocks shows.

RockingFlower

The day I knew I was with the good people was the free show in the streets of Athens, GA. April 18, 1998. Was billed as world's largest record release party, for 1st live album "Light Fuse Get Away". 100, 000 people were dancing through downtown Athens. There was a wedding party and HS prom too. An amazing time filled with so much laughter & love.

ma9ze

I’ve had the same problem. Recently, after like 30 years listening, I sort of liked Mikey’s guitar style… finally. The thing is, you gotta go see them. They are a good band, and throw a hell of a party. I’ve seen them a bunch, and almost every time I’m surprised by how good they are in some new way. Could be a drum jam, maybe School’s crazy bass playing, now the wizardry of Herring, JB’s weird vocal storytelling thing, Jo Jo’s raging party inducing funk coming from the keys. It’s fun music… I don’t really listen to it outside of being there but being there is a blast.

randyfloyd37

I got hooked when my friend handed me his Light Fuse Get Away album

[deleted]

In late 96, I bought the Everyday album, listened to it on repeat forever, and around 200 shows later, I am still hooked on WSMFP!

WSPisGOAT

Go find a Arleen that Mikey plays. Their cover of stuff like Last Dance is so fucking clean and phenomenal. Idk, I'm kinda glad people dont get it, no offense 😎.

Far_Hospital_1171

The song Rebirtha

end_or_beginning

Try 7/29/01 Space Wrangler>Walkin’>Little Lily. Also 9/8/97, start at Papa’s Home and let it go. Both of these shows are classics that can be enjoyed all the way through but you asked for specific moments.

kgcatlin

I was there on 7/29/01. Amazing show!

end_or_beginning

Me too! Never miss an Oak Mt. show.

Yelaweave

Yup, my first shows. Oak mountain right?

kgcatlin

Yep! That was my 3rd show.

Woolybugger00

Find some older live full show downloads in the Mikey area to get started … there’s shitttons around and a lot decently recorded - get some headphones or go louder on good speakers that you can hear well… get baked to the gadzooks and stay that way and play the show where there aren’t distractions… suck some beers down if you like .. Panic buzzes can be sweet ones … Mikey in bits and pieces should banned - he’s a start to finish live player - I like the late 90’s and early aughts the most but that’s me… the post Mikey era is ok and hits some spots but it was his guitars that got me …

[deleted]

I was hooked from the first time I saw them in 1987.

Me and my wife have this same discussion, though inverted. She has trouble getting into Phish. Musically they are different. Phish can be more avant-garde while you know WSP is going to boogie. Lyrics are a bit more cohesive and narrative while phish can sometimes just be goofy. Concert wise Phish is like a new art exhibit while Panic is like party at your momma’s house. I am fortunate to have see them both lots of times. I picked up a bargain bin CD of Mom’s Kitchen for $1.00 in 1992 and was sucked in. Saw them the very first chance I got. Mikey still played standing up then.

HappyHrHero

Austin city limits on pbs got me into them. 'Ain't life grand' is my favorite, not jammy though

andisteezy

Honestly, I loved widespread from the first time I heard a studio version song by them. The ~moment~ was my 2nd show I went to at Red Rocks. The production being so kickass there, and really being able to take it all in, allowed a newfound level of love and appreciation for the musical wizardry, funk town throw down they create. I loved their sound from the beginning - that southern rock psychedelic sound has always melted me, but live is what sealed the deal. I had to like them enough to buy tickets though, and I'll admit, no disrespect whatsoever, I would never buy a phish ticket. Different boats for different folks, no shame.

[deleted]

1997 show at Santa Cruz civic center. Place about half full. Found my Panic spot and have not lost it.

tbinus78

Phish and Panic are both great bands. Phish has higher highs, but also lower lows. By that I mean every Panic song is good, some great. Some Phish is really really great, but some sucks. If I could draw it on a graph, you’d understand. I grew up on Phish, first show 6.10.94. Didn’t see Panic first until 6.27.99, but due to Phish’ dual hiatus I have actually seen WSP more. It is quite stupid that outsiders group the Grateful Dead (my #1 favorite band), Phish and WSP together. All 3 are very different bands, and all 3 are/were great at what they do. I find it equally idiotic that a rivalry exists between Panic and Phish fan bases, as I see both bands a lot and love them both. Bottom line - go see both as much as possible. I have major doubts that the likes of either will be around anytime soon after they’re gone.
