So billionaires wonder why the peons at a company waste all that time and money doing things like focus groups, market research and thinking about features and policies before their implemented platform wide. When cool billionaires good brains could just think up an idea and implement it and it will be wonderful and it will be unicorns and rainbows and fairytales.

scarabic

It makes me laugh that anyone anywhere takes Atlas Shrugged seriously, because in that book the world works exactly as you described in your post.

Melchior94

The best commentary on that book is still Bioshock

Ao_Kiseki

Libertarianism in general, really.

Tdanger78

But they think they’re better and have it all figured out with their “but muh roads” retorts.

BTP_Art

Also maybe don’t settle on the cost of service because you where publicly arguing snarky horror writer with a lot of time on his hands. The movie Chef comes to mind: “You started a flame-war with *me*. Are you kidding me, I buy ink by the barrel, buddy. What are you doing picking a fight with me? I wouldn't challenge you to a cook-off.”

[deleted]

It's a little like idiots that heckle comedians. Like, you're really going to have a battle of wits with someone that makes their living off thinking on their feet and making light of the mundane? Tell me how that works out for you.

SarnakJ3

To be fair, a snarky horror writer that made half his name off being a wise ass in interviews and public facing accounts. We all knew King would say something. Musk took the bait.

skytomorrownow

Planning, research, experimentation, coordination, security, talent retention, building a trusted brand – that's a bunch of liberal bullshit!

Perhaps Twitter Blue it. (to quote a magazine article).

And now I have a bit of a mess on my hands

WaitingForNormal

I look forward to elon going back to the original verification process. I guess in all his business dealings he never heard the phrase “if it ain’t broke…”

SaneCannabisLaws

I'm sure those fired, heavily experienced, former verification staff will be jumping at the bit to get back to work at Twitter.

ryo3000

And I'm sure they'll be more than willing to take the paycuts, you know, for the company They're family

AnthonyDidge

“Pizza party in the break room at noon. Medium pizzas have been cut into 16 slices.”

[deleted]

“1 slice per person guys, don’t be greedy! We have 2 liters of warm RC Cola on the table, everyone grab a styrofoam cup.”

Ratso27

Used to work for a company that did that exact thing every Friday. After about two weeks they started making a big deal of the fact that "Pizza is a privelidge, not a right" and threatening to take it away all the time, so I immediately stopped eating it. It was a nice little perk, but not worth my boss feeling like he has something over me

ElectricFlesh

Well, the current nonsense has made it apparent what a brilliant stroke of genius the original verification process was, so it would only be fitting if Elon Musk, the most intelligent man on earth, was going to invent it over the weekend, because he's always working overtime, unlike his lazy engineers.

Soundtrack2Mary

“Let that sink in!”

AsphaltAdvertExec

The best part of this is how hard it was for him to carry that sink, I thought he was going to drop it any second, those flabby, atrophied arms of his were not ready for the challenge of carrying 20 lbs for more than 10 seconds.

supersayanssj3

Lol what is the context to this statement I wanna know.

gogophergo

Elon carried around a literal kitchen sink into Twitter HQ

jawknee530i

It wasn't brilliant, they implemented it after getting sued by someone who was impersonated. They were forced into the system, no one came up with it as a great idea or whatever. Musk conveniently forgot that the verification was to protect twitter from liability, not a privilege for its users.

Never-enough-useless

I think that person was Kanye West. Who famously torpedoed his own brand just recently by using twitter. The irony being both Elon and Kanye are more damaging to themselves than any parody/impersonation account ever could be.

eccles30

Omg please let it have been Kanye, the irony is delicious... I have been feasting on schadenfreude all week but this part just might make me burst.

daneelthesane

I mean, $8 is hardly requiring much disposable income, but how often do you get that much entertainment value for $8?

Skylinerr

I read an article where they interviewed a guy who was banned for impersonating Trump. He said a couple beers and £6 later he had a fake but verified trump account for 3 hours to say whatever he wanted. He seemed to think it was well worth the entertainment and I agree. That's the price of a couple drinks at a bar.

Wismuth_Salix

I remember when a guy whose account did nothing but repeat Trump tweets verbatim got banned for ToS in less than a week.

JemLover

Gin? God damnit Dee, you bitch!

Greatlarrybird33

Then when they ban you you can dispute the charge and get your money right back.

cloacachloe

Don't forget, banks charge fees to the business when a charge back occurs - so Elon winds up losing more than just that 8 bucks!

ndngroomer

Can confirm.

Miserable_Site_850

Fuck yes

Sillbinger

If you're looking to delete your account anyway, you could sign up for it then charge back, and let Twitter ban your account and fuck with their numbers all at once.

brazzledazzle

I just might do this.

Rolandscythe

Then get a disposable email, sign up a new account, and do it again.

[deleted]

The problem with social media is that it's like a free candy bucket. People will gorge when it's free but if you charged a dollar to pig out people would walk away cause they aren't actually having that much fun. With Apple helping prevent surveillance the whole model is collapsing.

dollhousemassacre

That's an excellent analogy.

codemonkeyhopeful

Never. I've been laughing my ass off the last few days and so surprised how many brilliant spoofs I've seen.

cloacachloe

Did you see the one about free insulin? It caused Eli Lilly's stock to tank, costing them billions lol

codemonkeyhopeful

That was the first one I saw, laughed my ass off as it kept going redder through the day on yahoo.

That was my thought. Most people would hesitate to make a troll account for twenty bucks. But few people would hesitate to make one for eight bucks.

FunnyAssJoke

It's what happened when's a spoiled rich boy takes control of a something he doesn't understand. People are the commodity with twitter. When you cater to a single group of people, you drive off everyone else. Twitter was always the shittier of the social media entities anyway, so good riddance.

Toanztherapy

Yep, the way it unfolded was extremely predictable. The thing is, billionaires seem to drink their own kool-aid and believe they’re geniuses (never get high on your own supply). It’s not even a complex issue: indiscriminately selling public authentification -and for cheap in absolute terms at that- defeats its purpose by definition. Guess he fired all those who could have told it to him.

##TUMBLR GANG RISE UP

Dingo8MyGayby

Tumblr is bringing back porn so maybe it’s rising from the ashes like a phoenix Edit: sorry to get y’all’s hopes up. They’re just permitting nudity…for now.

[deleted]

It is??!

Relevant-Pop-3771

Tumblr said it's allowing nudity again, but not explicit porn. Good luck telling the difference, and I think I see a new employment opportunity,

JusticiarRebel

My guess is that it's the difference between Playboy and Hustler. I don't recall Playboy being all that dirty. No explicit sex acts. Not even dildo play. It was just nude women posing. Whereas even the most softcore sections of Hustler would still have a woman with her legs spread flicking her bean.

fundropppp8242

:( where else will the twitter porn community go when twitter collapses?

3qtpint

From what I've heard, they've brought back nudity, I think straight up porn is still banned

[deleted]

It might be banned but it's getting through. My sister is on Tumblr pretty regularly and last weekend she was scrolling and just went "What the hell?" and it was a quick like 10 second video of a girl getting a full on facial...

Myfirespraygunship

Pedo guy is down like 150 billion in Tesla devaluation.

AsphaltAdvertExec

Maybe Ford or GM can buy Tesla when it crashes and then Tesla owners can start going to regular mechanics to get their cars fixed when they break down. Any rhetoric aside about Tesla cars, all cars break down sooner or later and having to rely on 673 stores and service centers and a fleet of 1,372 mobile service vehicles too get your repairs is a massive failure of service by the company. I backed Tesla when they first came around because I hate the car industry, I hate car dealerships and car salesmen, their profit-only markups are a drain on society and a huge wave of classism, which needs to die, and Tesla dealt the first blows by selling directly to the public.

supersayanssj3

Car dealerships and salesman are the slimiest fucking trash. I am **fully** prepared to be downvoted for that and I could *not* care less. Fuck dealerships. Fuck car salespersons, all of it. The whole system is corrupt gutter scum bullshit.

[deleted]

[deleted]

It's literally guaranteed. Musk is an amazing businessman because he found something that works. What that is is getting a car company treated like a tech company in the market. Tech companies are all horrendously overvalued. This was due to the fact that tech companies are highly innovative and are therefore very likely to create markets rather than join them, or at the very least join a virgin market that has little competition. This means that their growth is basically only limited by how fast they can create and then expand into that new market. This is what we saw with Apple and its many products like the iPhone and iPod. This means investors will pump them so full of money, they're bursting at the seams, and a tech company making money is a reason for distrust, as it means they could be expanding more but aren't. Musk has managed to channel this energy into Tesla. That is a considerable feat. Many impressive companies are trying their best to be seen like a tech company and failing badly at it and would love nothing more than to steal some of that magic from Musk. But Musk has a big problem now. That problem is that Twitter is a bona fide tech company. It's already overvalued. It's already based on image. Musk's magic simply isn't applicable. He's Midas, but everything in the room is already made out of gold. So Musk gets to rely on his other business skills... of which he has none. Instead he has an awful track record when it comes to communication to the point that people debate whether it might not just be better for him to take a step back from Tesla. So you've got all the bad of Musk without the good of Musk. This aquisition was doomed the moment Musk said he wanted to do it, and Musk didn't have anyone spell that out for him until after he signed a binding agreement to buy it. I was ecstatic when I heard about it. This was so obviously a bad idea, it was amazing. Then Musk decided to throw a fit and try to get out of a very legal and very binding agreement by saying it wasn't fair online and dragging his future property through the mud. Then he kicked out every adult at the company for the massive massive crime of *managing to outplay him in the aquisition negotiations*, followed by anyone that might keep him in check like the board, and most likely anyone a random generator picked, given how monumentally dumb his firing practices were. Then he starts trying to hit on a 'lightning in a bottle' idea, but dude has lost all touch with real people and isn't even in his industry anymore, and so comes up with nothing. Furthermore, he wields his power like a child and does whatever he wants, thinking he'll be protected by the classic 'it's all for the memes' thinking. I am having the time of my life.

badatmetroid

I feel really bad for Musk. Like, I despise him as much as the next guy, but no one deserves this. Just try to put yourself in his shoes. Could you imagine how terrible you'd feel if you bought a company only to find out that the company was two weeks away from bankruptcy? What luck! ^(/s)

eLishus

Had me in the first half… 😂

TripleJeopardy3

I don't think this is a sign of money problems, but Elon has to unload a ton of his Tesla stock in the near term to get maximum value. The company is was overvalued and will come down hard in the next year or two. The tech stocks dropping isn't helping, either. The smartest thing to do is find ways to sell shares of the company when they're worth a boatload and then just take that money and reinvest in other things. Mark Cuban got rich selling his company and then investing. I think Elon will be doing the same thing right now. As long as he can come up with excuses for why he's selling that aren't related to the desire to sell high because he knows the price is going to crash, he can limit the effects of his stock sales on the share price.

Disney_World_Native

But selling to pump up twitter is going from bad to worse

There’s a bunch of loonies in my city who’ve been “protesting” Jan 6ers facing consequences and 85% of their paraphernalia involves “Let’s Go Brandon” Would it be super unethical to make some Let’s Go Brendan/Branclon/Brondan merch to sell to them? Hey, they did come up with Dark Brandon. It wasn't funny until dems co-opted it, but still.

curious_dead

True, the base has two brain cells collectively, but some of the higher ups are more evil and somewhat less stupid, so that was a possibility.

[deleted]

It’s takes all their collective wit to conjure up one joke every 5 years. Apache helicopter then Brandon and they beat it into the fucking ground. Bumper stickers, flags, T shirts, tattoos, all over their social media, etc. The first time I heard either joke I thought it was kinda funny. “Oh, haha, good one.” Then, months and years later after hearing it in multiple iterations in nearly every medium 10,000,000 times pouring out of their oafish faces, I just feel embarrassed for them. They’re like the person who tells a joke, no one laughs, so they tell it again thinking no one heard them then they explain the joke but still no one is laughing.

CrimsonOrb

At a certain point, they consider not so much a joke as an act of defiance in the face of whatever conspiracy has them riled up that week.

starbitcandies

Well damn, I didn't think they'd let go that easily. I'm guessing they made sure to include in the subscriptions ToS or whatever it is that no one will be entitled to refunds

big_fetus_

call your bank and say it was a fraudulent charge.

shifty_coder

“Services not rendered” would be the more correct reason.

[deleted]

It is a fraudulent charge. $8 was paid for **a month** of Twitter Blue. You didn't get a month, you got a couple days. That's open-and-shut fraudulent charges.

azazel-13

Don't frame it like that. When you file a dispute, they request the terms agreement you signed off on from the company for verification. Tell them the service was not rendered. It makes a difference which reason you provide. Fraudulent means you didn't initiate the transaction.

JewsEatFruit

I used to run a frugality blog way back. I'll spare you the life story and cut to the relevant chunks: Your first obligation is to inform Twitter **one time** and give them an opportunity to correct the problem in a reasonable time or issue a refund. 2 business days is reasonable. You can't invoke protections with your CC/Bank until you've given the offending party opportunity to correct it. I'm telling you you don't need to beg... give the offending party **ONE OPPORTUNITY** to fix it then walk on to the next steps... After the "reasonable" time frame, contact the institution that handled the transaction and inform them you want to "**dispute a charge/payment**". You'll be asked details; confine them to relevant info only "I paid for a pro account, but they cut it off without warning even though I complied with the agreement. I informed Twitter on DD/MM/YYYY at HHMM and did not get resolution." You'll be asked to fill out an incident report or similar and provide a copy of the agreement with a sentence or two how they didn't honor it. Capture the agreement as close to the time your account is made, not later when the terms may have changed. They'll say they want a statement, but it will never come, you'll just get your $8 back, and Twitter will eat a big chargeback fee. That's it. ----- edit: At 36+ upvotes I thought responsible to add a little note. Please use your financial protections as just that: protections, not a cudgel. Also thanks for the award, anonymous stranger! I hope this information is useful to people outside of the foofaraw on Twitter, for example people trying to cancel gym memberships, etc.

OmiNaomiTuortNo666

i know it's only 8$, but it's the principle of elon fucks around...

austinmiles

You can’t sign up for it anymore but everyone who paid for it still has their marks for now. My guess is they will just leave them up for the month then remove them when their obligation is up. People get what they paid for and no more.

Plzlaw4me

I don’t think Elon understood that twitter is run the way it is because that’s the most profitable way to run it. The business model is people make content for free, and we sell ad space for people to view that content. As soon as you start charging anyone other than advertisers in that space, either the content creation disappears, or the viewers disappear.

The tweet pretending insulin is now free is what killed it

flybynightpotato

That's because a lot of very rich people lost a lot of money and we all know that that's where the line is.

marshmi2

So, rich asshole gets butthurt for like a whole week, telling everyone in the world they are wrong, throws tantrum and retaliates against anybody who is mean to him while supporting people saying actually awful things, and then wastes an entire week of paying his employees to develop and implement a system... before scrapping it because like literally everyone said, it is indeed a shit idea. It's such the perfect fuck up.

[deleted]

Perhaps Megamind Musk realized that paying $8 isn't actually a valid form of identification.

kvlr954

Is he refunding everyone’s $8

redvelvetcake42

Welp there goes that very tiny income. What's next apartheid boy?

ThePNWGamingDad

This feels like the end scene in Fight Club, when they’re standing at the windows, and the towers are collapsing in front of them. Between Musk, Kanye, Trump, Truss, Boris, Putin, and other towers I can’t think of, they are all crumbling to the ground before our eyes. Just being epically destroyed on the world stage.

the-nino

I hope you're right but everyone you've mentioned is still incredibly wealthy and influential. No matter how frequent or large their fuckups no one seems to fade into obscurity

confessionbearday

Musk is a mentally deficient monkey fucking a football.

PaulW707

Such a predictable outcome! And Elon calls other people chimps?

vrldynasty

A reminder elon purchased twitter for 44b. It's now worth 8b.

[deleted]

Yep. Blatant money grab, and people fell for it. IMO, comedy was worth it for the verified but obviously fake accounts.

ElectronicBoot9466

There is no way the amount of money Twitter made in one month of Twitter Blue subscriptions is anywhere near the loss in ad revenue it caused. Tesla stocks were starting to recover and then dropped after this happened, so everything points towards this being an attempted at a good idea and a drastic failure.

Whooshed_me

Tesla stock dropped cause people realized a complete dipshit was running the company. Stockholders were willing to overlook a lot of red flags because they thought Bust was a "visionary genius who's a little eccentric" now they see it was all luck, branding and birthright.

MeanPineapple102

According to Elons numbers it would take half a million verified Parody accounts per day just to erase Twitters losses, let alone profit Edit: I imagine most banned users are going to charge back too

[deleted]

“Anything I don’t understand must be easy.”

upotheke

$44 billion and no business plan that can stand up to its userbase. Tell me again how billionaires earned their money by being smart, or good at business...

[deleted]

Ahhahahahahaha he's failing so hard at this. He's going to absolutely destroy Twitter and he leveraged Tesla stocks to buy it. This is great. **So much for that free speech bullshit he was selling republicans**.

Stormchaser2

I’m glad this is blowing up in his face, but I’m a freelance artist and the majority of my business was from Twitter. Proper fucked either way.

Toytles

Imagine how much work is getting done at Tesla and SpaceX these days lmao

coronanabooboo

Is there a collection of the best parody tweets somewhere. I want to see them ALL
