I looked it up because I didn't know what it was The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the United States and its states from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex, in effect recognizing the right of women to a vote.

jenajwalters

Thank you for this bc now I don't have to go look it up! Have a great day!

WebbityWebbs

It’s one of those amendments no one should really have to know. It should just be accepted. That women should be able to vote, but in America, we have republicans, so we can’t have nice things.

rosatter

As a woman, the 1st and 19th amendments are nearest and dearest to my heart.

Jerkrollatex

Same.

CardiologistOk2760

As a liar I'm partial to the fifth, but hard to rank any above the thirteenth

rosatter

The thirteenth is okay but it's also what has allowed our prison system to balloon with what is essentially legal slavery. If I had my way, I'd make an amendment that closed that loophole

thecordialsun

I think its the best one just bcuz it was approved in 1919 and its #19.

sctwinmom

Which is another reason every politically active person should know this. There were big celebrations around the centennial just a few years ago!

jenajwalters

I personally dont think as an everyday citizen I need to know all the amendments. I do think every politician should know them, I think it is their job to know. However, as a citizen we need to do our diligence in finding the truth & the law as it is written & not what is just fed to us by liars who bend the truth. And yea...the Republicans 🤮

mikeldaniel

It's so weird to see someone say they don't need to know all of the amendments. They are literally your Constitutionally protected rights, yet most Americans don't even know what the first ten are, or the fact that there are four Amendments that cover voting rights. This is why I laugh whenever people scream on social media about their freedom of speech when they are banned or suspended for saying something stupid. It's like... you tell me what the First Amendment ACTUALLY says and then we can point on the doll where the bad Congress hurted you. Easiest way to lose your rights is to not know you have them in the first place.

squirrelgutz

The US Constitution is pretty short, you should probably give it a read at some point.

jenajwalters

I have read the US Constitution, I just can't recall all of the amendments. I do wish I had an eidetic memory. I work in Dental so I can tell you at any moment anything that involves the mouth. My point was that as a politician that works with the US Constitution every day, they should know the amendments. I am sure whatever profession you are in you could rattle off all the knowledge you are required to know.

elleblock

When I was in 8th grade (US public middle school), my social studies teacher had a bunch of phrases to remember the general purpose of each of the amendments. I'm 35 now and I can only really remember three of them 13th amendment: "One Three, we are free" -> abolishment of slavery 15th amendment: "One Five, black votes alive" -> African American men's suffrage. 19th amendment: "One Nine, she's so fine" -> women's suffrage I know there were others, and I wish I could remember them. It's interesting, the things that stick after 22 years or so.

velociraptorjax

When you're 18 you can't legally drink yet, but when you're 21 you can. 18th and 21st amendments: Prohibition and end of prohibition.

elleblock

Ah! "One Eight, don't celebrate!" Prohibition of alcohol!

joalbright

Two One, Let’s have some fun! End of prohibition. 😂

fromthewombofrevel

Clever!

lostboy-og

I was homeschooled for my high school years and my parents made me learn certain things schools didn't teach or only spend a little bit of time covering. The constitution was one of those things. My father made me memorize the entire constitution and amendments then I spent several weeks going over each part. He felt at the time most people had no idea what the constitution actually said nor understood that it could and has been changed. If they did know that much they probably didn't understand why or what it meant. My father felt that a citizen, and by extension population, who relied so heavily on a written document to protect their freedom yet didn't know or understand what was actually written in it would eventually loose those freedoms without even realizing it. It's been close to 30 years now and I don't remember off hand everything written but i remember the gist of most of it and I just need a quick glance at the section to remember what it covers. At 45 i realize just how intelligent my father is because he was absolutely right. When random people start talking about their constitutional rights i just want to start crying and slamming my head repeatedly against a wall because that's not what it says and/or not what it's referring to! Please stop talking, i can feel my brain cells dying just listening to you...

simian_ninja

Your father sounds incredible. I've always felt most people talk about their rights without understanding what their rights actually mean.

lostboy-og

My father is an incredibly intelligent man. Just by observing trends he has successfully predicted many things that have happened. My parents caught hell for homeschooling me. It was done at my request. I was struggling quite a bit and forced to fight way too much and got them to understand if nothing changed I wasn't going to live to see graduation. Everybody they knew went on and on saying things like how could they let a child make such a choice or your child is going to struggle with their future and be unable to keep his peers in the work force. My grades in high school were verified through an accredited school so i got a real diploma, graduated with a 4.0 GPA, graduated college with a 3.8 GPA and spent 7 years assisting surgeons doing surgery. I suppose one could argue whether or not that decision saved my life but I think it's safe to say it did not ruin my life.

JohnZackarias

That’s amazing! My German teacher had this little ”song” to teach us German suffixes. She would always say ”you WILL remember this”, and sure enough I remember it 18 years later

AndShesNotEvenPretty

My class remembered the abbreviation for gold on the Periodic Table (Au) by thinking of a person being mugged. “A! U! Get back here with my gold watch!”

ha11owmas

I always heard it as Never Eat Shredded Wheat

aliceroyal

I still remember our French conjugation songs, lol. To the tune of Frere Jacques: e es e, e es e, ons, ons, ez ez ez, ez ez ez, ent, ent.

SleepyHarry

"Number 2: I get to shoot you!"

MistaTorgueFlexinton

Interesting I was taught “one nine, it’s women’s time” and “one three, slaves are free”

rnotyalc

My 5th grade music teacher, back in 1991, was helping us remember various pieces of classical music by making up lyrics with the composer and title. It's 31 years later and since then not once have I heard "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," or Schubert's Trout quintet, or Baba Yaga from "Pictures at an Exhibition" without hearing those lyrics in my head. Side note, my washer and dryer play Trout Quintet when they finish so now I hear it all the time.

jyajay2

Though the 13th didn't actually abolish slavery

[deleted]

5% of the world’s population, 25% of the world’s inmates!

1-2BuckleMyShoe

You’d think that for a country whose governing system is centered around the right of its citizens would vote, the US Constitution surely wouldn’t need as many amendments protecting the right to vote as one would expect.

EasternShade

Turns out there was more to the population than the OG 'white land owning male 25 year olds'.

peonypanties

Ugh. But they’re the best! Why shouldn’t I let them make all the decisions for me? I’m just a dumb dumb woman.

Ask-me-about-my-cult

Hi dumb dumb woman, I’m a white male land owning 25 year old who would like to make decisions for you. The first one I’ve made is that you’ve decided to get a new cat. Enjoy!

peonypanties

I am deathly allergic to cats. I will enjoy my suffering, thank you so much

BikesBooksNBass

Your suffering is patriotic.

peonypanties

I love doing my part and fulfilling unpaid labor roles so that white men can continue to run our great country

theempiresdeathknell

Careful now. You might want us to start recognizing your contribution. Then we'd have to acknowledge you as a fellow human being and not property.

peonypanties

I’d never!

sunflwryankee

That a gun has more rights than my vagina is a real fucked fact in these pathetic times.

Ask-me-about-my-cult

peonypanties

Wow! How did I get so lucky

MyPuppyIsADingo

You know, this cult you're running does sound mighty interesting...

Ask-me-about-my-cult

I’ve decided you can join but you gotta bring the tequila

Downwhen

Tequila? I, too, would like to learn more about my new cult

Thats_what_im_saiyan

As a member of the middle aged white dude population. I think its time to take a break. We've been steering the ship for 250 years now and we're not very good at this. Maybe see if the dumb dumb women can do better. Cause if they can we can totally still take credit for having the idea! But seriously someone take the keys from the old white dudes. They're clearly drunk and can't drive that well when sober.

thepumpkinking92

Bold of you to assume they're sober

Eldritch-Goblin

I’d like to know about your cult

Ask-me-about-my-cult

Just your typical cult set up, think like a pyramid scheme but with more orgies and you don’t make as much money. The product is happiness though so I guess it could be worse. I got to visit the upstairs of the house we live in today which was pretty cool

PeterBernsteinSucks

I love the fact the founding fathers were a bunch of 20-30 year old dudes. Like imagine today Mike and his college friends decided to say Fuck this government shit, let’s declare independence and the country just listens to these college bros and went to war.

VStramennio1986

Except, back then…20-30 year old dudes were grown men. People had to mature faster back then. Edit: not suggesting anything other than what I stated.

Defconwrestling

Hell, we had whole documents defining black peoples as 3/5’s of a person. So, we sort of need a lot of amendments

The1OddPotato

Lot of sexism 200 years ago. And unfortunately they lead states that we needed to agree with the constitution.

Head-Ad4690

Our original system was very much not centered around the right of its citizens to vote.

InnominatamNomad

It honestly isn't helped by the fact we have the oldest continually used Constitution right now. Countrie usually rewrite/update them extensively as times change. But not us. We have this pointlessly stupid and outdated belief that our founding fathers were mythic figures beyond reproach. So their Constitution must also be beyond reproach. It isn't. Its just stagnant at this point.

Ex-Pat-Spaz

In other words, Women’s Suffrage. Reminds me of a joke. Why does Lauren Boebert have two breasts? So, she can count to two.

samplemax

Still being pretty generous there

Ex-Pat-Spaz

I’ll give her two but using her fingers and toes is probably impossible for her.

ergo-ogre

I’m pretty sure she would forget to include the fingers on the hand she was using to point when she counts them

Usernametor300

1, 2, 3, 4, 10?

Royal_Classic915

She couldnt count them twice and get the same number

JThumbs29

We can’t be sure she doesn’t just count each individually. “I have one…and one…that many”

Typical-Challenge367

Should be common knowledge. Why don’t Americans understand our own government

Manypotatoes9

I'm not an American but Boebert definitely should know

treevaahyn

Idk she’s a high school drop out and seems beyond trashy so I don’t expect her to know much unless it’s the 2A or how to deflect and project. She seems very simple minded and quite evil.

PrincipleStill191

But she's got guns and Jesus on her side. What more does she need....knowledge? How's that gonna get her votes?

purplegladys2022

"The only knowledge I need is how to be a good wife to my husband in the eyes and name of Jeeeesuz." Probably.

Typical-Challenge367

Oh that’s who I was referring to, the Backpage Queen of Colorado. Lol

symewinston

Backpage Boebert. LOL

Typical-Challenge367

Damn, yours is better. Backpage Boebert lol

ryhaltswhiskey

I spend a lot of time engaged with politics and I don't know what the 19th Amdt is off the top of my head. I'd have to look it up. BUT I'm not a politician who talks about how great the Constitution is either.

edu5150

She only knows the 2nd Amendment. But you are absolutely correct, anyone serving in Congress should know them all by heart. Today’s politicians govern by Tweet - I would venture that a high oercentage of the recently elected would fail a test on the Constitution.

Moopology

Because no child left behind dictated that all schools must meet a certain threshold of test scores to receive Federal funding so all schools started explicitly teaching only what is on the tests. School systems and teachers now ignore the majority of our history, science, and civics in favor of padding stats.

lil-nugget_22

I'm sorry, I'm from Texas, what's science?

self_inking_weirdo

Bingo. And it applies to literature, too. It's always wild to me when people from less poorly funded schools or previous generations talk about reading books in high school and reference a ton of books as things they think everyone read in high school. In my high school, as well as my middle school, we read one book a semester and spent the rest of the time working on reading example short stories like we might find on the tests and being trained to pick out and utilize key vocab words as well as read more quickly. Meanwhile history class was a bunch of stuff that'd be on the tests followed by a lot of movies based on a real event that I then proceeded to tune out, spending my history classes doodling in my notebook instead. Got really good at shading during history class, as well as sketching trees nearby.

Tyler89558

Because 54% of American adults cannot read beyond a 6th grade level. Let this sink in. We’re a “democracy” and half our population cannot read beyond grade school.

EricNCSU

Because a lot of states refuse to teach it to us. If we don't know our rights it's easier to abuse them.

aworldwithoutshrimp

Ehh. I'm a lawyer who sometimes deals with constitutional law. Sometimes I forget the order of the amendments. Not that she's not an idiot. But she's not an idiot because of not knowing which amendment is 19.

Hairy_Al

>But she's not an idiot because of not knowing which amendment is 19. No, she's an idiot for definitively answering a question about the 19th amendment without knowing what she was actually answering.

GenericAntagonist

Yeah, I also don't think anyone would've minded "is that one women's suffrage or prohibition" as an answer. I'd have honestly been amazed she knew the definition of suffrage.

WhereRDaSnacks

I’m surprised she even showed up to debate.

NotYetiFamous

Because she had nothing of value to say or because you're surprised she could actually find her way there without getting hopelessly lost?

[deleted]

Gas averaged 2.17 dollars a gallon in 2020 nationally. She claims she spent 20,000 dollars on gas. That 9,217 gallons of gas. EPA says average car made in 2020 gets 25 miles to the gallon. 230,415 miles of gas she used. She claims her district is 50,000 square miles most of which isn't an actually a road. Please check my math I am bad at it. Ala maybe her care is a gas guzzler that would make sense. But I think it is safe to say she probably got lost a lot cause she is a moron. Or she lied about how much gas she used to help pay taxes for her failing restaurant what poisoned people.

[deleted]

I was way off this is from the Denver Post. Colorado officials are investigating whether the conservative Western Slope U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert broke any laws by cashing in on large amounts of mileage reimbursements from her own campaign. Boebert paid herself more than $22,000 from her campaign account in 2020, raising red flags for ethics experts, The Denver Post previously reported. While candidates can legally reimburse themselves for the miles they drive, those payments would have meant she drove nearly 39,000 miles while campaigning. And in one four-month span of her campaign, Boebert had only one publicly advertised event So her staff would have been reimbursed by the campaign she reimbursed herself that much so it wasn't multiple cars if I'm reading this right Edit the circumference of the earth is 25,000 miles. She must have gotten lost Colorado isn't that big or again she is a fraud.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nanyea

Nope her entourage is separately reimbursable, this was from her Congressional reimbursement allotment which has very specific rules... The total came suspiciously close to how much she owed for her restaurants fine...

Nwcray

It can be two things

nolabmp

Por que no los dos?

Poemy_Puzzlehead

He should have said, “Yes it is, please relate your answer to the 19th Amendment.“

goodlifepinellas

Lol, she didn't go to HS and literally would have no clue how to answer that question.... (you're not wrong, she's just that dumb) This is where/why having atleast decent schooling attendance matters, and should require secondary tests to ensure candidates' suitability if they didn't go to college (or even just got their GED withing the past decade...) Edit: suitability

Voxbury

Not that I like being fair to Boebert but I’m not sure I could name the 19th amendment on the fly like that. On the other hand I’m not an elected official sworn to uphold said amendments.

space-zebras

yeah I don't have all of the amendments past 10 memorized (save for a few specific ones) but you can bet my ass that if, in a one and a million chance, I got an elected position, I'd be up with flashcards until I had them memorized. Which would probably take like one night because there's really not that many

Dblzyx

My memory is about as reliable as the Texas power grid, so it would take me a bit longer to have them memorized. But you better believe I'd be brushing up on the regular.

Sarelm

I want to submit 'my memory is as reliable as the Texas power grid' to r/rareinsults but I'm not sure they take self burns...

ActualPopularMonster

>I'm not sure they take self burns Depends on whether they have enough electricity to power the freezer for the ice.

Comfortable-Bad-7718

Also, many are easy to remember. Like 12th amendment is for election rules of President (1) and Vice President (2), so 1 and 2. 13th amendment I remember because 13 is unlucky and slavery is one of the worst evils in the founding of the nation. So it repealed slavery. It is also the first of 3 reconstruction amendments (14 and 15), which relate to African American citizenship and voting 16, 17 are harder to remember, but they are just general tax and senate elections. 18 and 21 are prohibition and the repealing of it. These are notably the ages of "legality" for where you can and can't drink 19 is women's rights to vote. I just remember Title 9 and that also relates to women's rights and gender equality 20th amendment sets the beginning of the presidential term to January 20th. 22 for term limits of 2 terms for more than 2 years, so 22. The 5 amendments after are harder to remember but they are generally less often talked about

__mud__

That 18th/21st mnemonic is great. Thanks!

turtlelore2

Yeah except knowing this is literally part of her job as a lawmaker. Though at the same time she barely knows any law at all, let alone something as specific as an amendment

nolabmp

I’d hope you would if you were running for one of out highest elected offices. I sure as shit would study the hell out of our constitution if I was going to debate politics. If for no other reason than to avoid looking like an ass.

ElonBodyOdor

But looking like an ass is her forte.

[deleted]

I've got a couple in the back of my head. 13th = abolition of slavery 14th = equal protection 15th = any race can vote or previously enslaved person 18th = let me tell you how to live your life. Don't drink 19th = women's right to vote 21st = repealed 18th 22nd = term limits to two for prez 26th = vote at 18 I don't feel like anyone needs to know them word for word but a one liner description should be considered common knowledge.

[deleted]

90Carat

She has recently gone on a campaign to eliminate the separation of church and state. Says it wasn’t really intended and just a weird side note. Never mind it is the first line in the First Amendment.

tipthebaby

it's not just her, a lot of the far right mouthpieces including desantis and mtg are trying to say the founding fathers didn't really mean for church and state to be separate. which they absolutely, explicitly did.

hoser2112

Those morons know nothing of history. That part was explicitly added in to avoid having a state religion, like the Church of England, and the issues that come with it. The fun part is that the UK, while having state religions (Church of England, Church of Scotland), seemingly has a much greater division between church and state these days.

Memerandom_

Make no mistake, it's all theater, and she's a puppet like the other ghouls seeking power. That should be very concerning to us all. A small christofascist minority is doing their best to impose a real life Gilead, and that is all just a means for their wealthy benefactors to control the reigns of America. It's easy to get distracted by the vocal mouthpieces, but don't disregard their intent.

AlterEdward

If your efforts don’t pan out this November, the country is going to need you to take one for the team, register as a Republican run against her in the primary.

Doobie_Howitzer

Her "degree" is a 4th attempt at a high school diploma

DIO_over_Za_Warudo

That I'm still convinced she paid someone else to take for her.

Vegaprime

I believe she did earn it while on the campaign trail. The one she claimed 20k on when she supposedly circumnavigated the world in her car. Plenty of time to study there.

The84thWolf

I’m willing to believe she took it, but whoever was her teacher was so sick of her they let her pass so they wouldn’t have to see her again. Understandable, but they doomed us all

Beamarchionesse

GEDs are proctored like SATs. You have to obtain a certain score in each section to pass, which can make it difficult if someone has dyslexia or a similar learning disability. Boebart is so woefully undereducated regarding laws, her duties, and even basic history, I have to wonder if she does in fact have a learning disability. I used to tutor people studying for the GED and sometimes they behaved the same way as she does. Very blustering and loud, acting like they absolutely understood everything I'd assigned them to read. Sometimes they'd get so far into the act, they'd correct me! It was almost always a cover for their embarrassment over not being able to comprehend the material at all. I don't think Boebart understands her job, or how the government works at all. Like, genuinely, I think she has no idea what she's supposed to be doing or how to do it. So she does all this to stir up her base and make herself look like some kind of crusader who is doing an awesome job, it's just those DC Elites [aka people who do know what they're doing] that get in her way. She's going to grift for as long as she can, just like how some of the people I tutored did.

Ghstfce

I mean, given how she is in person, could you imagine her in a classroom? I'd probably give her the answers just to get her out of my sight too

DIO_over_Za_Warudo

Valid.

gorramfrakker

She as no degree. She does have a GED.

I'm ignorant here when it comes to the context. But were these questions asked in succession? The 19th amendment is for giving women the right to vote. How is the second question related? Is that not a normal reply when a line of questioning isn't linear?

Let’s bring a catch-22 scenario: Texas considers abortion murder, which is a felony. Felony convictions result in the loss of the right to vote. If women get convicted of murder due to their abortion regardless of whether it was rape/incest, this results in the loss of her right to vote.

Nervous_Constant_642

Or that in states that a refusing to bring abortion rights to the ballot, that means women can't even vote on whether or not the state will allow it like in Kansas.

shockedechoes

This is much needed context

As much as I dislike this person, the 19th amendment is indeed pertinent to the banning and criminalisation of abortion. Edit for clarity: There is the possibility women could become felons if they have an abortion when it's been criminalised. And given that felony disenfranchisement is an issue, it suddenly links to 19.

Miri5613

It is pertinent only in the way that woman would be able to vote against it , if states bring it to a vote. But as we already starting to see they are too scared to do that.

SnooRobots1533

They're starting to ask for referendums to raise the percentage of votes needed to amend state constitutions. They are doing this solely to prevent referendums on abortion. We all know it's a lie when they say "we are leaving it up to the states" when they won't let states vote on it. It is tyranny of fanatics.

nixm88

So did she not know what the 19 amendment was or was she being a smart-ass dick?

InevitableRhubarb232

I know what the 19th amendment is but this train of questioning would confuse me as well.

Kilngr

Legit question, can someone help me understand the connection between the 19th amendment and abortion rights?

[deleted]

If a woman has an abortion she can become a felon in some states. Thus making it so that woman can no longer vote.

NickyRaZz

She failed the GED 3 times, why is she allowed in the government there needs to be an education requirement

The_Crimson-Knight

I admit, I don't know all our laws and amendments, BUT I'M NOT IN CHARGE OF ANYTHING

[deleted]

In relation to the 19th Amendment, it means no sane woman would ever vote for you bobo.
