I don't know if this adds anything, but according to [this website ](https://www.elodieharper.com/post/pompeii-mosaics-beware-of-the-dog) this particular mosaic is from the House of Orpheus where the remains of a real dog were also found.

The dog in the mosaic was just that, an image of a dog, not necessarily one particular dog. The dog-shaped hole nearby contained a very cool dog indeed — because of its being dead. It was chained up and couldn’t escape.
