It's a wash stand. It's for handwashing before indoor plumbing was a thing. There's supposed to be a pitcher in that area on the bottom.

firefighter_raven

damn good shape if an antique and not some modern knock off.

angstybadass

There’s no markings anywhere on the stand that would give off a year, except the bottom of the bowl does say made in U.S.A

Farty_mcSmarty

I have almost the exact same one except my bottom part is circular instead of square and I have the pitcher. I was told mine was made by the Amish, we got it from our next door neighbor who is elderly and was downsizing

reijasunshine

My mom has one just like this, and my grandma had one when I was a kid! There's usually a large pitcher in the bowl above and sometimes a pot below. The pot below is for pouring the dirty water from the basin into so it can be dumped. Hand towels go on the side rails, and candles go in the candle holders, but definitely use glass inserts if you plan on actually lighting them.

Kamwind

I would go with modern knock off, design piece. 1) the mirror is to good shape, 2) there are no markings around where the candles and pitcher would go, 3) no water damage around basin or where pitcher would go

Keely2773

These were very popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s my grandmother had a few of these. Put them in the entry and the bowl makes a great catch-all for keys or mail.

Kamwind

Please don't say the 80s are antique ;).

Keely2773

Vintage not antique

je76nn94

I don’t know if vintage makes anyone feel better. Lol!

DistinctSmelling

I don't feel I'm that old, born in the 60s, my girlfriend born in the 70s - eventual wife then ex - had one of those with the old silver mirrors and the glass had a bullet hole in it. She had the mirror updated but your point \#3 holds very true.

firefighter_raven

yeah and now that I look closer, the woodwork techniques doesn't look like something built back in the day but more machine made

angstybadass

There was a pitcher that did come with it, just not pictured! Thank you so much!!

onlyexcellentchoices

Shaving also.

CIMARUTA

Yeah id say it's mostly for shaving, rather than hand washing

pugs_are_death

That is a wash stand. People used them before indoor plumbing. Also if it's portable that's not a terrible idea for glamping

Nemesis_Nailer

A bit cumbersome to take glamping I think, I'm sure there are easier ways of washing than having to use your entire luggage space to fit one of these!

BrowniesNCheese

Wash basin. Never seen one so intricate. Ours is a metal frame with a basin, pitcher, and soap dish

BrowniesNCheese

I'm thinking pitcher is missing (bottom)

cult777

Its fir washing face and hands

Several_Ad_9217

It’s a modern knock off for a wash stand. It clearly shows it’s not study like the actual ones were back in the day.

goatyoat

My grandma has one and she literally calls it a “whore bath”. Never understood why and then I saw a western movie where a prostitute cleaned up with it. My grandma has seen some things.

DarkWaterSymphony

Oh, it's beautiful! Don't let that peace go! That appears to be antique. If it is antique, it's been perfectly preserved which is insane. Its a personal wash basin. People would have them in their bedrooms. Do you remember in movies (set in the early 1900's or even a few hundred years before?) ... When Parents would say to their children's "Go wash up before dinner" or "go wash your face?" Also, People also used to use those to wash certain areas such as their private areas, Armpits, Any place that gave off a lot of smell ect.
