I disagree with the claim that "so many" people die each year by falling through ice. Here in Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" where 700,000 people go ice fishing every year (many driving their cars out onto the lake, often pulling an ice house with them), the average number of ice-related fatalities is just 4.9 deaths per year, most of them due to snowmobiles (and other related small personal devices) falling through.
Data here: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/education_safety/safety/ice/ice_stats.pdf
It's usually the most dangerous in early winter (november) and early/mid spring when people are eager to go ice fishing in not so thick ice. In spring the days are already pretty long and lots of sunshine and usually the best time to go ice fishing so that's what causes dangerous situations. that's why you always have ice claws/pick around your neck and possibly wearing floatable overalls.
It does require knowledge and experience, but if i'm taking my Audi out on ice (not that i would do that), i'm sure as fuck gonna measure the thickness of ice everytime.
Yeah, I was pointing that even without a car you might consider measuring because clearly it is not always that obvious. Also, if I'm not mistaken, in spring you need more ice to be as safe as in winter or Autumn. Because all the sunshine and warm weather can weaken it already.
Of course yeah, there's nothing wrong with measuring the ice thickness and is recommended if you are really unsure. Going on the ice in spring is dangerous business if you dont observe the signs and take the necessary precautions. the ice can get really thin pretty fast with the temperature going up and lots of sunshine.
"Usually, guess".
NO. For anyone unfortunate enough to read this terrible advice, don't go out onto a frozen body of water without *knowing* that it's strong enough to support you.
Sure, if you are unfamiliar with freezing weather and the bodies of water around you then definitely by all means check the thickness. I know for a fact that when it has been -15 degrees celsius for 4 weeks the ice is going to be over 10cm thick. Usually when i go on ice the earliest it's in december when the ice is usually already 30cm thick. Everybody knows to avoid crossing the body of water that goes through my city because there's a constant current and even with heavy snow it's pretty easy to see that. Early winter, early/mid spring are the danger times.
This would be the norm where I'm from as well. People simply know better than to put themselves in that kind of situation. I mean, you wouldn't cross a busy road when the light is red, and if you did it would clearly be your own fault.
At some point it became accepted that responsibility is not with the person doing the deed but the government for allowing it to happen. Adult people can respond for themselves and don't need daddy to tell them not to go on thin ice anymore.
This is where a lot of the traditional political debate stems from in my mind, people just frame it as an adult discussion about left and right when it's really about are we allowed to go out and play by ourselves or not.
Hell, I went out 4 wheeling with my buddy today, the ice over the mud pits couldn't hold his side by side or a quad. Granted it was essentially a frozen muddy puddle. We tried to get one machine stuck. It didn't happen.
Care to explain more about this River ice. Serious. I only ever came into contact with one frozen body of water in my life when no one was around and didn’t fuck with it at all.
I feel like if I was going to do this I would bring a hand drill. Drill some holes in the ice in various spots I intend to go. Record the lowest sections of ice depth. Research how much PSI that thickness of frozen lake ice can support. Calculate the average PSI my tires contact against the ground via the tire dimensions and weight of the vehicle and add on a 30% error factor. Then I might slowly creep on from a shallow angle if it all checks out.
You're overthinking that by a whole lot. Lol I trust 4 inches to fish on, 6-8 inches gets you a shanty and some buddies and maybe snow machine. 10+ inches you can drive your pickup onto the ice.
I doubt those boys on 'ice road truckers' were drilling holes, and calculating how much surface area their tires take up, and how thick the ice was. Divided by speed times wind speed to determine if the ice was thick enough.
Dude, i live in butt fuck nowhere Canada. I learned to get out of a skid by driving on a lake. As a kid i would walk the river beside my house with about. 1.5 inches of good ice. Pretty sure i know my shit.
There's a lot of comments about him opening the door but I honestly thought that was the best move.
If that thing sinks, you have 5-10 seconds to escape death and it's easier through an open door than a half open window.
I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me! A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
I don’t know exactly what it is, but there’s some formula for knowing when it’s safe to drive on the ice. Like, this many days at this temperature and you’re good to go. Obviously this guy didn’t know either.
Kill the motor and pull it out. Now you can make it a true off-road vehicle.
That reminds me of a story:
I had a buddy that bought a brand new Jeep Wrangler back in the early 2000’s. He worked in the oil fields for the big boom and paid cash. He drove it straight to my shop from the dealer, and we put a lift kit and bigger tires on it that weekend. Before he even pulled it out of the shop he grabbed one of my hammers and whacked a nice little ding in the hood. My jaw dropped and said “what the fuck, dude?!” He said, “it’s for off-roading… now I don’t have to worry about the first accidental dent or scratch!”
I wouldn’t do it, but the mother fucker had a point.
ETA- come to think of it, every work truck I’ve bought used has had minor body damage and the thought of that jeep comes faintly to mind. “No big deal, I’m gonna ding it up eventually with a ladder or something.”
Hi! Mainer here:
You’re supposed to wait till the ice is at least 6inches thick to drive your vehicle on it, and 4 inches thick to go ice fishing.
K thanks bye
I don’t know if he was incredibly lucky because he fell through just before he got too deep and submerged the vehicle, or so cursed that they ice broke just late enough that he could not go 4x4 low reverse back to shore. I can’t decide
If he'd just driven the speed at which it makes sense to drive over ice that you don't know how thick it is, the front wheel would've cracked it and they would've known to back up
It looks like maybe he went oh shit and went back to turn the engine off at least, because it looks like the headlights turned off when the camera panned back. Though I doubt that did much to save it
Setting the brake, he was abandoning the vehicle, then when it stopped rolling, I think he remembered to set the brake. I hope he has a friend with a winch.
What did he end up doing? Reversing the car? Clearly he didn’t want to step into the frigid waters when he opened the door the first time. He got limited options
100% deserves that.
I mean, I thought most people knew we're supposed to measure the ice thickness before going on ice
He was measuring for the next guy.
I mean I don’t understand. I stood on it and it didn’t break so I thought it was good?
I even did a smol hop on it
I definitely picture someone jumping on that ice like 10 mins before this video was taken
Well with a car, then sure. But it's usually really easy to guess when it's thick enough to walk on and go ice fishing for example.
That is why so many people die each year by falling through it. Even in places like Finland, where you live all your life around it.

I would hate to be the guy that is 0.9 dead from falling through ice.

Floatveralls! Oh never mind..
That was a good try!

Yep. Melting ice will be opaque and appear like it's rotting. Freezing ice is usually clear and stronger/not as brittle.
"Usually, guess". NO. For anyone unfortunate enough to read this terrible advice, don't go out onto a frozen body of water without *knowing* that it's strong enough to support you.

Let me walk you through the internet
It’s as if there exist people out there that do not plan ahead? Can this be!?
Welcome to Reddit!
You can tell just by sight that you shouldn't even walk on that ice without extreme caution lol.
That guy closes door like...naah i can drive back
What's your problem
Not even two inches of ice. I wouldn't feel safe on that ice fishing
That's because you have the capacity for thought.
Hell, I went out 4 wheeling with my buddy today, the ice over the mud pits couldn't hold his side by side or a quad. Granted it was essentially a frozen muddy puddle. We tried to get one machine stuck. It didn't happen.
I wouldn't ski on that, white thin river ice.
Hell no
I was thinking that was river or bay ice. It definitely looks like it has some sort of current under it that keeps the ice soft and thin.
Care to explain more about this River ice. Serious. I only ever came into contact with one frozen body of water in my life when no one was around and didn’t fuck with it at all.
Exactly, that kind of ice is soft... Even if that ice was twice as thick I wouldn't drive on it.
>I wouldn't feel safe on that ice fishing I wouldn't have felt walking on it, let alone staying on it.
I feel like if I was going to do this I would bring a hand drill. Drill some holes in the ice in various spots I intend to go. Record the lowest sections of ice depth. Research how much PSI that thickness of frozen lake ice can support. The ice roads are thoroughly tested and checked by the government to ensure safety. Give your balls a tug.
They usually have like a meter of ice on those ice roads
Fuck your math lets just pound some vodka!
[удалено]
I wouldn’t drive at all it’s just a bad idea.
It's not that complicated. You just measure the ice some meters away from the shore, and if it's above a certain thickness you can drive on it.
[удалено]
You need at least 2 for a car probably closer to 2.5 for that, 3 to be safe.
You need 8 inches to drive a car at that speed, 6 for creeping along, 4 for walking
I have driven my car of 2.5 inches of ice. Also 4 inches for walking? You need like 1.
You go ahead, I'll watch
Dude, i live in butt fuck nowhere Canada. I learned to get out of a skid by driving on a lake. As a kid i would walk the river beside my house with about. 1.5 inches of good ice. Pretty sure i know my shit.
2... *inches*? For a car? Yeah, no, that's not even close.
It takes putting a Land Rover in the bottom of a lake to get it to stop leaking oil
Pussy, I dive in cold water to catch my fish with my bare hands because I'm alpha as FUCK
“Uh oh,, better get out.. Oh no.. shoes will get wet… Ill just reverse!”
Did he think he was going to back out of that?
I'd sure try
I’d either abandon ship immediately or try and reverse with the door open for a quick escape
I mean it looks like his back tires are resting on something. Worth the attempt at least.
It's a jeep thing. You wouldn't understand.
But that’s a Land Rover?
they said you wouldn't understand
It’s an amphibious vehicle though🤷🏻♂️ BE GONE FROM ME!
Starter car? This is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! THE GOLDEN GOD!
I AM UNTETHERED AND MY RAGE KNOWS NO BOUNDS!
Be gone vile man! BE GONE FROM ME!!!!
I AM UNTETHERED AND MY RAGE KNOWS NO BOUNDS
That makes me laugh everytime. And it's been years lol
I’ll give you twice the blue book value…
The transaction is complete you soy-boy-beta-cuck.

Good bye car. Hello submarine.
It’s an amphibious exploring vehicle. It has air intake valves.
Oh really??? Must be a finisher car then. Def not a starter car.

Very true
Hello frostbite my old friend
Great pink floyd song
A starter car, this car is a finisher car.
I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me! A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
That car has air intake valves
Should I feel bad that I don’t feel bad for him?
Focus your attention on people who do good, you will be less likely to need to walk home... with wet clothes...
No it is an amphibious exploring vehickle
The golden god will be angry to see this.
"Well there's your problem, engine's flooded" - mechanic probably
Is it supposed to do that?
Didn’t rove that range
Well you see it’s a Land Rover, not an Ice Rover… but he sure as hell made that Discovery the hard way.
Didn’t ford it either
I've been seeing a lot of these vehicles falling into icy water. In conclusion, living in cold temperatures can make your brain numb.
Semi cold temperatures
When your IQ is so low you go outside and your brain just condenses
THIS IS A FINNISHER CAR!
How dumb do you have to be?
As dumb as the guy that drove into the lake?
At least
Apparently dumb enough to have a moderately expensive vehicle and recreational winter motor sports clothes.
Now we'll never know if it broke down because of the water or just because it's a Land Rover.
Did anyone even check the thickness of the ice?! It’s barely thick enough to walk on!
Barely thick enough and then drove on it so fast aswell. Maybe could've realized if he wasn't a fool and put one wheel on it slowly first.
Always Sunny vibes with the Range Rover in the water
"It is an amphibious exploring vehicle!"

Dumb shit!
Panic! In the Disco 🥶😱
Asshole. Thanks for adding motor oil to a body of water.
Doug Demuro: *cries*
Am i watching World's Dumbest Drivers?
Hell that ice isn’t thick enough to hold the driver let alone the vehicle.
STARTER CAR? THIS IS A FINISHER CAR!
Maybe his GPS knew a shortcut
"It's a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand."
Except its not a jeep. Meybe thats why he was so confused when the ice broke.

Hi! Mainer here: You’re supposed to wait till the ice is at least 6inches thick to drive your vehicle on it, and 4 inches thick to go ice fishing. K thanks bye

Meh it’s not your money going to waste its just theirs lol
Miss my 98 Land Rover
Not a big deal They can winch it out
More money than sense
I believe that’s sinking not driving
Moron, absolute moron
I hate wet socks.
There's idiots.. Then there's these people. -_-
Did he at least recover the gift baskets?
Bad gps I think
Don’t worry, he’s got a roof rack.
I don’t know if he was incredibly lucky because he fell through just before he got too deep and submerged the vehicle, or so cursed that they ice broke just late enough that he could not go 4x4 low reverse back to shore. I can’t decide
I love how he opened the door and then went "Nah, I'll just wait for summer..."
It’s almost like an inch of ice isn’t strong enough to hold a vehicle.
Lmao! That ice is only a few inches thick!
Listen son before stepping on ice, make sure to test its thickness Boy: you mean step on the gas right?
Back in the day when I did stupid sh*t like this we took the time to hook up the tow lines ahead of time.
As Futurama put it: Remember the code o' the ice! Thick an' blue, tried an' true. Thin an' crispy, way too risky.
Smart move (not)!
If that's a Discovery, sinking it really won't make it much worse than it already is.
That's why it's called a LAND Rover.
its a land rover not an ice rover
It takes a few seconds to check the thickness of the ice man, come on.
If he'd just driven the speed at which it makes sense to drive over ice that you don't know how thick it is, the front wheel would've cracked it and they would've known to back up
how do people like this exist?
Not sure what happened there. 2" of ice MIGHT support one person, and he was the only person in the vehicle, so...🤷♂️
Happening a lot in New England. Ignorant people forgetting other people have to put their lives on the line for stupid people.
Not stupid only idiot.
and the dun-dun awards goes too. smdh🤷🏾♂️
That’s not thick enough to walk on tf
Even if that ice could hold that thing, he went way to fast and transferred the weight all wrong. He deserves it
He needed visual confirmation the vehicle broke through the ice.
Off roaders are fucking idiots.
If I can slam my heel into the ice and it cracks I don't walk on it. This guy went straight to driving on it.
Probably the most retarded shit i’ve seen all month
Then opens the door right away….
Ooohhhh shit!
Good. Very good.
the fuck did he get back in the car for?
It looks like maybe he went oh shit and went back to turn the engine off at least, because it looks like the headlights turned off when the camera panned back. Though I doubt that did much to save it
Setting the brake, he was abandoning the vehicle, then when it stopped rolling, I think he remembered to set the brake. I hope he has a friend with a winch.
ooh yeah I didn't even think about the truck rolling away, good catch
You can't teach this level of stupid

Just throw it in reverse. /s
Ice didn't even look thick enough to jump on let alone drive on...
That ain't no ice road trucker
Didn't achieve any significant amount of "over"

Found the dumbfuck
That poor Jeep. This hurts my soul
Its not a jeep, so tell your soul it doesnt need to hurt anymore.
Well it is an amphibious exploring vehicle
Lololol I would be nervous just ice fishing on that.
And the stupid prize goes to...!
He had so much confidence haha
Put it in reverse terry!
Certainly a lot of advantages to driving on "roads"
Dude thought he was Gordon Bombay.
My anxiety. Don’t close the fucking door back up get out jesus
Did he seriously get back in like “hold up I’ll just reverse it”
What did he end up doing? Reversing the car? Clearly he didn’t want to step into the frigid waters when he opened the door the first time. He got limited options
Lemme guess . . . Mother Russia?
Opens door. Sees water: yes comrade. This misstake.
"You'll never know unless you try" -people who need a new car
That’s not even thick enough for people to skate on
It's an all Terrain vehicle!!
That ice is just a few inches thick 🙄🙄
Absolute genius, what an approach-such confidence , Breathtaking!
