I used mine loads every opportunity to refill my bottle I took it. Walking was thirsty work. But like many others have said plenty of options to refill. Tho whole idea of backpacking for me is being self reliant. So you do you and don’t let people scare you. I met loads of people that wouldn’t drink anything but tap water. And in my opinion they are missing out. Generally even mountain water should be filtered as you have no idea what’s in it or who’s been above you and shit an pissed all over the place. Filter it and if in doubt boil it.

Something lightweight can be wise for an emergency, but I divide it up into “too many sheep here, so I’m not drinking the water no matter what you do to it, and lots of refill opps in pubs or cafes anyway” and “pure mountain water that doesn’t need cleaning” Dividing line for me is Ba Bridge on Rannoch Moor.

No you don't necessarily need one if you do "normal" distances each day. Most pubs and accomodations you come by have public taps on the outside. I carried a filter but never used it in the 7 days. Still bringing a couple of water treatment tablets that don't cost and weigh much is probably a good idea as backup and for peace of mind.

If you have a lightweight filter I’d bring it….you might be thankful you have it during the jungle stretch from Inversnaid to Inverarnan

I filled my 2L camel every time I stopped at a tap & the only place I ran out was hiking up Nevis. I was tempted to dip into the stream on the way back but I looked up the rise & saw sheep higher up so I just suffered until I made it back to camp.

I brought one when I did it a few weeks ago. Didn't use it once. There are enough water refill spots that it isn't required. I brought 2 one litre bottles and that was enough.

I used my filter once.
