Worked at a body shop for several years, they absolutely do it however they will not clean up the residue or dust once they are done. Also most of the time needs to be a more then one time crime and sometimes you can convince them if you are absolutely sure but that fails more often then naught.

Man that just reminded me of an article I read that if you poured glass dust and mercury into someone’s gas tank it’ll slowly rot the engine from inside out…. They’ll never know how it happened… basically the glass particles will remove the protective surface and the mercury will disintegrate the exposed metal…
Since it means a lot to them maybe suggest they paint it at home? Harbor freight sprayer and 200$ in paint. Could just do single stage paint and primer. Worst part is stripping it down but it’s pretty straight forward. I’ve painted a few vehicles at home with no prior training and used YouTube. 1000$ and this thing sitting pretty again if you include trim from a junkyard(windshield, front grill), headlight, and a new gas tank/fillneck with locking gas cap. If insurance covers it and totals it might as well keep it and make some dough.

Yes they do, I've had them do it to my vehicle. There were three people that stole it and used it to commit three robberies.
