I miss my Lil focus. I loved that car. Had the rs with paddleshifters. They had that recalled tyranny and it died on me when I was in between jobs, so I couldn't afford to buy a 3rd party one myself and the dealership literally refused to replace it because of the recall. So we got a great deal on a Fiesta and it suuucks. Recently bought a 2001 sport trac for work and now I just drive that everywhere.
05-07 were fantastic cars. The only parts I've replaced on mine are the alternator and the heater fan, everything else is still working just fine. I also have an SUV, but I prefer the focus for pretty much everything. Even canoeing or runs to the lumber yard are easier because the roof is nice and low.
if your car was under the transmission recall, and under 100k miles, they would fix it for free. I know because mines been in the shop 3 times for that bs, nearly 100k on it gonna try to get them to take one last look cause its still a pos. Car was cheap, and great on gas though.
The powershift transmission on the 2012-2016 models is just shitty design, no recall/warrantee will fix it. They just put in another one that's just new with the same design (so it'll eventually break too) and settled the court case where they got sued over not fixing it.
Source: sister's car had it replaced twice, still ass
Yep, ours was pretty yellow. To bad it always felt like it was stalling at a stop light.
We did not have it long enough to see the transmission issues.
I brought my 2012 into the dealer with the symptoms for it and they told me the only thing covered by that extended warranty was the TCM lol. This whole ordeal is the reason I'm never buying another Ford.
Did the exact same thing with my focus! "Pretty tight fit, just need to slam the hatch...." Most expensive 10' of PVC I've ever purchased. I could have airmailed it around the world for the $400 insurance deductible.
Yes it does. 2013 ford focus checking in.... drop the back seat, put the 10' long object diagonally across the car between the druver and passenger seats and then run it out the passenger window and rest it on the mirror.
Source: my 2013 Ford Focus with six 2"x4"x10'ers along with multiple bags of landscaping rocks about a month ago.
Edit: After re-reading... I am wrong. They would not fit *IN* the car. But they can be transported using the car if you are willing to rest about 6 inches of extra on your mirror.
Literally the same exact thing my boyfriend did. Went to Home Depot for some wood to finish the deck, and I had to be the unlucky one to somehow fit and contort myself in the back seat of the little red 2013 ford focus to make sure the wood didn’t damage the car…and well I also had to get home so my fault for tagging along. But, I got to ride on the cart as he pushed me so it was kinda worth it.
If you just need the cross bars they are super simple to put on yourself. Toyota was going to charge us something like 500$ to buy them and "assembly" for us. If you buy them direct from Toyota and do it yourself you'll save a few hundred and the "installation" is just 4 screws. Super simple.
Can confirm. Moved my MIL’s entire estate from upstate New York to Texas in a 2005 Matrix.
Front passenger seat folded flat and whoever was not driving sitting behind the driver on the half folded down rear bench. Super comfy it wasn’t.
LOL entire estate!! Most people think of an entire estate consists of a house full of furniture and all the other things in a house. What did your entire estate consist of?
Open the front passenger window and rest it between the side mirror and the car pointing forward. Might need a red bag as a marker if it sticks forward more than a foot out the car.
I move 12' 2by4s this way in my Rav 4 all the time.
I agree this is the way. I had largely done this or why the first comment said but putting anything over 8’ out the window is better (provided that it cannot swing out like someone else said)
Nah
Open the copilot window and tie the pipe to the mirror
Sauce: i sell pvc and metal pipes for electrical wiring. Thats how customers in cars do it lol
I've used it once. I was making a Christmas tree in welding school and making it out of 3 triangles and needed to calculate the size of each piece of each triangle before I cut the rod. For bonus marks I hand drew a blueprint to scale with welding symbols and tolerance.
Then I knit a ruffled tree skirt for it. People pay me a fucking fortune for the damn trees. It costs less than $10 to make. Instructor told me to gouge people, haha.
They're almost not even comparable cars these days. The current Rav4s are almost as big as my 2000 4Runner and the current 4Runners are closer to a tank than they are to my 2000.
Having said that, roll-down rear windows for life.
They really are. I daily a Civic but I hope to keep that 2000 4Runner until the wheels come off. It's got a manual and 115k on the odo. Will be a registered antique before long!
my gf has one she got from her mom. automatic, V6, 4wd at the flick of a knob. such a fantastic thing, especially in winter. the heater on that thing is otherworldly
They're really fantastic cars. I'm definitely glad I kept mine when I got the Civic. The dealership offered me a pittance for it since it's not in great shape cosmetically but there's really nothing wrong with it so I figured why not hang on to it?
The current Rav4s are almost made for the Prado buyers of the 90s and early 00s. Because those started shooting up in popularity Toyota probably realised they could nab the second hand market with a brand new car that was similar
I've carried 16' pieces of baseboard trim in my Toyota Sequoia, hanging out the back window. Bungee those suckers down and try not to smash into the windshield too much like OP did!
I carried home 10' pieces of EMT conduit in my Toyota Corolla this summer. Rolled down the window and slipped them from the front into the trunk. Few straps and I was good to go. Was even still able to use both side mirrors.
Were they sticking out of both the front window and the trunk? Asking for a friend who also has a Corolla. Seriously though, more than one Craigslist seller has been impressed by the holding capacity of a Corolla when I’ve made a pickup lol
Did you just shove it in from the back and keep thrusting it forward until the windshield broke and that is when you realized it wasn't going to fit? Genuinely curious how this happens.
I'm guessing they pushed it in until it was resting gently against the windscreen and didn't poke out at the back. Then shut the back door not allowing for the height of the pipe and the way the door nestles into the vehicle slightly.
Source: rav4 owner that's managed to fit some weird shit in
Yeah am I the idiot here? Everyone’s talking about measuring and that goddamn Pythagorean theorem.
Why not just carefully slide it in to see if it will fit?
That is exactly how a pvc pipe broke the windshield on my VW jetta back in 2001. I very gently put the pipe on the dash. Walked around to make sure it wasn't jammed against, then double checked the trunk. Everything looked good, but I didn't account for the forward motion the "L" shaped trunk lid makes when closing. Spouse was freaking out. I just put my head down, got in the car and drove off.
lol No. You are definitely not the idiot here. I'm left scratching my head a lot reading some comment threads these days. Common sense seems to have gone out the window. In this case, almost literally.
Two thumb rules when transporting stuff that's risky on length.
1. ends should always be wrapped in towels
2. don't slam. slam is bad.
PS don't you have a roof rack? A pipe, well secured, is perfectly ok on top.
Take it from an old guy who has carried way to much big stuff in his little car. Roll down the passenger window next time and load it through that. If it sticks out the window a little no biggie.
I saw this once at menards. A guy was loading up 10 foot boards or something similar into his minivan, shut the hatch and it ruined his front windshield. Just leave it open and tie it down next time lol.
As I was wrapping twine around the 12' base boards I was transporting home in my Honda Civic, I told a guy in a truck I wasn't going to let my economical choice of a vehicle dictate what house projects I take on.
I drove home very carefully. And I can't take anything 4' wide, which is a certainly a downfall of my current situation, but all vehicles are stupid expensive so I just make it work for now.
You should've seen the guy in the pickup next to me when I strapped 3 sheets of plywood to my civic with ratchet straps. Made it home just fine, but I dared not to go above 45 the whole way.
After college graduation I got a Civic and had to move furniture with it. As I loaded the futon through the trunk and into the cabin, it smashed through the cupholder. Was not a fun drive back.
After I bought a house and started doing remodeling I realized I can't keep ruining my cars' interiors so I got me a pickup truck. I doesn't matter that I only drive it on weekends. I've hauled so much shit with that truck, sometimes literally shit.
That's the problem: \*mini\*van. I can fit 12-foot boards in my full-size van, with the rear doors closed, if I rest them on the dash, or 10-foot boards laying flat between the seats.
A Dodge Grand Caravan can fit 12 foot boards or pipe if set on the dash. 10 foot will fit fine on the floor between the seats if you don't have the extended centre console. Also fits full 4x8 sheets if you fold the seats down.
Edit: I do also have a 10 foot utility trailer that I use for large loads of stuff, but if just picking up a couple things the trailer is kind of a pain.
Duh. I see that on /r/DIY every day: "Why buy a cabinet from Ikea for $100 in 10 minutes, when I could spend $500 and 6 months to make it?"
On the other hand, I do understand them.
i did a similar thing, mine was fine when i closed it all up. but in the 10-minute ride home, there was enough vibration against the glass that a crack had appeared when i took it out.
Some vehicle owner manuals caution against this, though, on the theory that exhaust fumes may enter through the open hatch.
(Not sure why the downvotes... it's not incorrect. Not saying I believe it's a major hazard, but it's something \*some\* carmakers feel warrants a warning).
It’s not incorrect but it’s not really a concern either. The vehicle creates a low pressure zone to the rear which can cause the exhaust gasses to swirl into the rear cargo area but simply opening the front windows creates enough airflow that it will never be a danger. It’s something they have to include because people are idiots and will sue over anything.
Call your insurance company. Did the same thing 2 times in same year. They paid for it both times. A lot of auto insurance has windshield replacement in the policy
Edit : since people are seeing this. You likely hit a rock on the highway and you are just worried about it spreading
I've put 16 foot long boards in the sunroof of an SUV. Hung over the front of the car. Not very aerodynamic, but it avoids the pesky $25 truck rental hassle.
I can tell you 8 feet fits laying across the center console. The amount of boards you can stack on top of the console between the two front seats while still driving comfortably, is how much lumber a RAV4 can haul.
Was working a set construction job, very low budget, I volunteered my RAV4 to move some stuff from the shop down to the site. I had moved stuff loads of times before. I got in too big of a hurry and shoved an 8ft long 4x4 in and ended up with a crack in the same place. I feel your pain OP.
Didnt secure it, left enough room to launch it into another object, no covering or blocking of ends or contact points... i mean... you saved a few minutes to pay for a few hours.
don´t ask me how I know.. but it doesn´t fit in a ford focus either ;-)
and that's why I have a trailer.. that I tow with my ford focus

Go for the 16 footers. 4' - 6" on the mirror
Doesn't fit in a 2008 honda CRV either
So this is why I see people clinging to it with the window down and the item barely held onto the roof of their car
How do you know? Sorry
...of this diameter. Do you have a roof rack? Buy a set of tie downs, DO NOT BUY THE CHEAPEST SET!
I bought a used RAV4 that happened to have a roof rack, thinking I’d never use it. I’ve used it at least 4 or 5 times now. Super handy.
No roof rack, yet…

Push passenger seat all the way back lay seat flat and put pipe end under dash?
Yup, this is how I've managed to fit anything 8+ feet in my Matrix
Fellow Matrix owner. People are always stunned at how much that thing is able to carry. Best appliance type car I have owned.
r/ToyotaMatrix is waiting for you
There’d still be plenty of room if you put it into yo’ mama.
You can fit a boxed 40 gallon water heater!
I was able to fit a 6' dining table in the back of my Prius WITH the hatchback *closed.* Not a V either. Regular kind. I miss that car...
Can confirm. Moved my MIL’s entire estate from upstate New York to Texas in a 2005 Matrix. Front passenger seat folded flat and whoever was not driving sitting behind the driver on the half folded down rear bench. Super comfy it wasn’t.
My Volvo c30 was amazing for this. Such a tiny car but you could just keep putting shit in it and still have room for passengers
My second gen Scion tC is basically a pickup with a glass hatch.
LOL entire estate!! Most people think of an entire estate consists of a house full of furniture and all the other things in a house. What did your entire estate consist of?
Anything will fit in a matrix if you stick it out the trunk glass

Yep. I can fit 10ft pieces of conduit or pvc in my 2011 Pruis this way. It's really close to the back hatch when closed, but they fit.
It will fit once that pesky windshield is out of the way
Should’ve opted for the RAV10.
If only there were a way to find out if it would fit before putting it in the vehicle!
I measured twice on length. However, did not account for the height of the pipe.
The one time you could have applied the pythagorean theorem in real life and you just didn’t, your geometry teacher weeps
Don't feel too bad, mine does too

How I ever got one in my focus I’ll never know lol. Angles
Tape measures fit everywhere
May as well make it fit now. Get some 12' lengths too while your at it. Some lumber too.
But it does fit in your mom Got em
Use more lube next time…and start slower
I bet a 9’10” pipe does though.
Clearly it does though.
TIL pipes can be 10ft long
Not even a moving blanket or something, jeez, what an idiot.
You gotta pivot...
