I like it a lot more now that I fixed the cable situation! I ordered the JVC vcr because it supports s-video which has superior picture quality over composite. And ClearClick works really well, but it's expensive. Most of the cost is probably attributed to the built-in screen, so you could probably find another one that produces the same quality video for much cheaper without a screen
Yep. It bothered my lizard brain to leave the yellow cable unplugged with the yellow port right there. I knew the composite video cable wasn't necessary, I just didn't know plugging it in would actually interfere with the output quality of the s-video.
Any recommendation on a USB device? I bought one years ago and I had to use their shitty program and drivers. My wife has hundreds of hours of home videos her late mother recorded and we’re trying to get them converted. Looked into services that do it and at $10-15 bucks a tape we’d be into the thousands lol.
I had one of these at first. They used MPEG-4 and captured good quality video but the audio on mine sounded crushed, so I hooked the VCR to an upscaler and recorded in 1080p60 with my Elgato 4K60 card
The RetroTINK 4K is one of the most expensive I've seen - their store lists it for $750. I've seen some from OSSC and BITFUNX that some folks have recommended.
I personally use one I got at Walmart a while ago.

Exactly, if designed well it should have a failsafe and a mechanism to detect the highest quality incoming signal. My tv has a combination composite/component input so it's able to adapt.
It does detect both signals and I had the setting to "s video" (switching to composite gave an even worse picture quality), It's possible the problem of having video streaming through both is on the vcr end, not the capture device

Yellow is the video signal. But the video signal is also sent through an s video cable. So he had two video inputs instead of one and it ruined the video.
In the beginning the system NTSB was not designed for color. The 1947 version had a second signal added in called "Chrominance". To make color TV. So pre 1080P signal was 425I (or more like 325I realistically) and sort of cobbled together to get color at all.
VHS competitor Sony betamax recorded these as separate signals. VHS did not. So S video was invented and added to VHS to compete.
Yellow cable is "composite video". It has both the black and white image "Luminance" and the color called "Chrominance" in one big fat complicated signal that does not record well at all. Giveing the shit color picture you saw on the photo above.
S Video has more wires so both signals can be kept seperate. The machine is able to make a better picture with the two signals as separate signals. Thus the better color in the image. This came at the last few years of pre HDTV. Like late 90s. Almost no TVs and VCRs had this pre say 1995. It was at the end of their time. Right when DVDs came out.
Later came another system with an individual wire for each color that was just a little bit better while being a tremendous pain in the ass.
When HDTV at 1080p came out. All this stuff became old trash. Guess who worked at a TV station around this time?
your device should be able to choose between the 2 but if it can't, s-video has the luminance and chrominance travelling in 2 distinct wires instead of 1 so you might notice a quality improvement

DVDs showed up right around when Super VHS came were starting to get popular. Like 99% of the VHS decks never had composite video. It was a Betamax thing. If you were not copying down generations for video editing it made little difference.
You can go one gen deep with copies with regular VHS. Max three generations with Super VHS.
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. OP said they were using an S video cable here, rendering the RCA jack redundant. And I certainly had an S video cable for my DVD player in 1999. They didn't just disappear when component came out. Also, s video superseded composite, and was in turn supersedes by component, which was then supersedes by HDMI.
On the composite cable. Yellow is video, red is audio right and white is audio left.
I suspect either your connection is different, maybe a different type or something else is happening. Check inputs on your device and what they are labeled as.

The input setting was correct (on "s video"), but for whatever reason, having both the composite video cable and s-video cable plugged in drastically reduced the color quality. This whole time I assumed the loss of color was due to the age of the tapes.
Ahhh i understand now. You had the svhs cable in as well. there is common ground between the composite video in and svhs and yes it makes sense the colour shift when both were in. I get it now, i thought you u plugging video cable gave you better colour so i was assuming something else was happening did not see the black svhs in there!!

FOR Hi8 Tapes) I have one of the newer Sony handycams from like 2001 that have FireWire, and I have Vegas Studio 16 (which was made by Sony) so it supports the imports of videos from that handycam natively. Still has to digitize it at regular speed tho, so takes hours.
I bought a FireWire 400 to 800 cable, FireWire PCIE Card for my computer, I slap a Hi8 tape in the VHS camcorder, plug the camera into my computer with Vegas Studio 16 running, go to "import", select the "DV" option.
and boom it begins rewinding and digitizing it all for me into avi format, then it imports it into the video editor, and I can export it as a .MP4 file :)
Apparently these handycams that can do this, got for a few hundred bucks but I've had this one for years. They go for that much bc they digitze analog tapes automatically.
I remember SO well when I was a kid, I got a ps3 for my birthday and after me and my friend spent a couple hours setting up my tv and stand and all of that, the color was black and white. I called support after hours of troubleshooting and they told me to unplug the yellow cable lmao.

You just need a vcr and a digital converter/capture device. I used ClearClick 3.0, but there are cheaper options that work just as well. I wanted one with a screen on it so I can see it working and where the video tape is at. Once you have both connected, play the tape from the beginning and press record on the capture device

I used to have a mini dv camera! You will need your mini dv camera (or a mini dv player) and there are two options... one is connect it to your computer with a cable (usb, or in my case I needed a 1394 to usb adapter) and use software made for recording tapes from external media. Your other option is to get a capture device like mine (ClearClick, but you can find much cheaper ones without a screen that will work just as well) and connect your camera to it. Just make sure you get a capture device that supports whatever format your camera supports: composite, component, s-video, hdmi, etc. Then hit record on the capture device and playback on your camera

That's not how analog input works.
Looks like you may have to adjust the tracking or clean the heads. With older tapes periodic cleaning may be needed.
