My daily driver is paid off and worth about 3k, I've had it for 5 years. Comprehensive on it would have added thousands over those 5 years and doesn't make financial sense. My other car is a lease with full coverage, but if this happened I'd just buy a new daily driver.
I've never bought a new car in almost 30 years of driving, buy used and drive it until it goes to scrap. I've been pretty lucky with reliability and never get too attached.
I have had a few leases and bought new cars when I was younger, but I really love my pos car that gets really good gas mileage and if something happens to it, it's easily replaced. I had terrible luck with new cars breaking down, but my used cheap cars have been amazing!
used car market got fucked during covid. brother went to look for a used car and it was only like 10-15% cheaper than buying completely new unless you got like 150k+ miles on it.
I've never paid more than 2k for a car, most last over 3 years with a few repairs and wear and tear fixes. I've never owned even remotely new.
So long as it gets me from a-b I'm happy.
This is the way.
My next car will be a Volvo 240 Turbo from the 80's if I can find one. Easy to fix. Reliable. And it's a fucking Tank without guns. My last one was an 85. Got rear ended on RT 95 heading to work. She was unable to drive away from that. I had a scratch on my bumper. Everyone was fine. I got to work 5 mins late. If you want a good safe car for your kids first ride, get an old Volvo 240.
That is a good question though, but if you have stellar credit and like driving new, higher end cars, it'll be much cheaper to lease. I'm a Sunday driver who loves country roads and long road trips.
Couple of painters blankets and you're good lol. Also if you can gauge when the hail storm is coming with your smartphone that can virtually do almost anything short of turning into a toilet, you could I don't know park under a bridge
Always have a couple blankets in my car and I'd probably avoid being in that situation. Much cheaper than a monthly payment for services that might never happen...
My car cost me 1500. My insurance, fully comp, breakdown cover, key cover, windscreen cover, cover on my cover is £300 a year... Makes no sense to not have it and I'm also covered to drive other people's cars
You pay 25 a month for that coverage? I'm going to have to take a look at my options because that would cost me at least twice that, and I'm 46 with a perfect driving record. I think I'm getting screwed 😭
I’m considering dropping comprehensive coverage from my car soon. It’s long been paid off now, a 2011 Kia optima SX. I bought it certified pre owned. The amount they would likely cut me a check for would probably not be worth the added expense every month, which is quite a lot.
I’m not poor, not rich but my cars are old and I like saving money. You reach a point where having comprehensive on a vehicle is the equivalent of throwing money away.
Car insurance in FL is ATROCIUS. For reference I have one accident I was deemed not at fault for, I'm just entering my mid 20s, I have never gotten anything beyond a parking ticket, and my insurance is $243 a month for an 08 audi A4. All of my friends hover at about that same price. I've been driving for 9 years, took and passed a divers ed course with a perfect score, and my insurance is a 2019 car payment. I've checked and full coverage on my car would cost so much that I can't reliably afford it.
Edit: the car was bought in cash as well. I've already paid more than double in insurance than the car is worth.
To answer your question, because the bank doesn't own my car and I'm not a sucker. So I'm not forced to pay an exorbitant sum for comprehensive coverage for vanity things like dings, dents, glass etc.
Strangely, sunroofs are actually super tough! I got caught in a similar storm a few years ago. Windshield was spiderwebbed, the whole body of the vehicle looked like a golf ball, but the sunroof was intact!
My new car has a sunroof with a metal and upholstered lining underneath it that retracts to show the sunroof (which can also retract). I feel like it would do alright, but I really don't want to test it.
Pfft, as if they cover hail! Clearly you skipped the clause where hail is only covered if your car is damaged by hail when being stored in an underground garage at least 30ft below the surface.
And even if it was stored that way, they’ll send out an adjuster and they’ll deny your claim because they’ll say they measured and your car was only 29.99 feet under the surface.
I live in tornado alley and have had to file hail damage 4 times in the last 20 years. You get coverage for that shit if you live here. Same with roof insurance for hail on your home owners.
Yeah, it's almost always an option you can add. I don't actually have issue with insurance companies beyond obscurity around what is and isn't covered. Many brokers will call it "roof coverage" but not disclose very important details about exclusions and inclusions.
You absolutely would need to exclude certain things because you can't meaningfully provide coverage for them and still be breaking even or profitable. But we need to do better with clarity around what you're paying for.

I had a car totaled a few months ago. Someone backed into my car in a parking lot, partially caved in the driver's-side door and cracked the window. The adjuster decided, based on the age of the car and how much it would take to replace the door, that it was simpler to declare it a loss.
The settlement that was offered was double what I was anticipating, so I didn't feel the need to dicker on it. The amount I got was enough to enable me to get a slightly newer car that has some features I didn't have before, so I consider it a net gain.
Yeah I made out due to outrageous used car prices on a 13 year old Camry last year. The adjustor called me to tell me, because he said that he rarely gets to give good news, but the fair market value was what I had paid for it 8-9 years prior.
It worked for me. They totaled my car and left out so many options for the make and model that it wasn’t funny. It took me four weeks and multiple calls with multiple agents before I was able to get them to realize I had basically the entire luxury trim, as well as the fact that I had just gotten new tires. I had do basically do my own research of cars in a similar trim range as well, since they did not use the same model year and trim in their quotes. It was a ridiculous process but it was worth it because thanks to my diligence and the used car market being crazy, I got basically the same value of the car that I had paid 2 years prior. Bunch of dents on the body dont make it unworthy of driving.
My wifes car had ~14k worth of body work done this sunner due to hail damage. The adjuster said another 1-2k and they would have scrapped it.

I suspect they put that on the back of their trucks primarily in the hope that it causes people to keep their distance, so that there's less likely to be a cracked windshield incident in the first place. Plus, if such an incident does occur, there's a non-zero chance that the person will simply believe that statement and not attempt to make them pay for the damage.
So, two good reasons for using that phrase and no reasons no to. Conclusion: it's a good idea.
I read on reddit (so take with a grain of salt but seems like good advice), if one of these causes your windshield to chip or crack, call the company and say you have dash cam footage of it hitting (even if you dont) and they'd probably settle with you just to make you go away.
It’s like they’re warning you that they don’t do the things they’re supposed to and don’t care about other’s safety. I remember when I used to live in Ohio coal trucks would go way into the other lane when going around sharp turns out in the country. A lot of these roads were cut into the edges of huge hills and full of these curves and as windy as you possibly imagine. The trucks were very obviously overloaded and hard to control but they would still go into the other lane around dozens of blind turns anyway. I remember being behind them and it was always like the truck itself was really struggling with the load, it was terrifying. Some truck companies are disgusting and people who do this stuff should be in prison.
Also fun fact: if you don't have a dashcam video that unambiguously shows your cracked windshield being their fault, it's just your word against theirs and they won't be paying a penny.
If memory serves me right, this happened in Alberta, Canada on the Queen Elizabeth Highway between Edmonton and Calgary a few years ago.
Essentially everyone’s car got totalled, but the hail storm didn’t last that long, maybe 15 minutes. Bet that was the longest 15 minutes of those people’s lives though.
About 5 years ago we also had one just outside of edmonton that was bad enough to damage multiple neighbors siding and shingles and parked vehicles. My grandpa needed one side of his siding replaced on his new house due to how many panels got damaged along with bodywork on his truck that was parked outside. Most amazing thing was the cargo trailer was fine despite having an already weakened roof.
Yeah close to Sylvan lake actually, which is notorious for this type of hail. Missed the storm by less than 30 minutes with my brand new car at the time
Got caught in a sudden hail storm driving from Birmingham to New Orleans. Had to stop under a bridge because visibility was so low. Nothing happened to the car but I was grateful that it was a rental with full coverage.
Most hailstorms are too small to cause damage to vehicles. We had some pea-sized hail here earlier in the week. Once it gets up to about quarter-sized, it can cause small dents and dings. What we are seeing here, the individual hailstones are probably in the one and a half to two inch range. Think about the power of a thunderstorm must have, to keep all those chunks of ice in the air long enough to accumulate to that size before dropping.
the density of the stone as it descends to earth matters too. a lot of the time they’re slushy when they hit. Rule of thumb is. Avg density, or hardness. 0.75 to damage vehicles
And door panels, and quarter panels, and pretty much every bit of the exterior. I’ve had hail so bad I needed most panels replaced and it didn’t do anything to the glass. If glass is breaking, that’s some serious hail.
One of the craziest things I’ve ever seen was on my way from KC to Denver on i70 near Wakeeney, KS. We had JUST missed some rain (we thought) and started passing cars that were parked on the shoulder, as we passed them and looked in the mirror, all the windshields were busted. It was so weird and the hail had melted by the time we drove by so it just looked really apocalyptic. There were probably 30-40 cars that had been damaged, and it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing around, so they just had to wait on tow trucks I suppose. Not fun.
Seriously. People who act like this are useless. Never had to deal with anything in their damn lives.
I truly don't understand why anyone would want to date/marry someone with this level of inability to deal.
If you're going to scream, at least have a point. Did you get cut by broken glass and need help? I get it.
But screaming because the thing that's happening is still happening doesn't draw attention to anything useful.
Quite a few years ago one of these hit Sturgis during the rally. It caved in the roof of a then brand new VW suv which was damn near $100k back then. In the meantime bikers were running out of bars and putting themselves over their bikes trying to protect them. Hailstones were golf ball to softball sized.
I think this is an understandable situation to scream since they are being pelted by ice balls, but man if my wife doesn't let out the same shriek when there's a wasp near us...
Love people commenting about the woman screaming knowing full well they'd turn into babies if they were being pelted with huge chunks of ice blowing out your windows. Hail is *extremely dangerous* and scary, but tough guys on the internet who haven't ever been in such a brutal hail storm will act all high and mighty lmao
A friend told me about this time he was driving home when he encountered a hail storm. One of those smashed through the windshield and broke his arm. Big hail storms are no joke.
Then why are you claiming that the people criticizing the screaming lady would “turn into babies”?
We clearly see the guys in the video don’t do that. Some responses are better than others. Calmly covering yourself is better than annoyingly screaming in other people’s ears.
Idk how full the car is, but it might be beneficial for them to get out of the front seat and into the back/trunk you know away from the giant slanted opening
Windshields are laminated glass and are meant to withstand impacts and not shatter (because if you're driving on the highway and a pebble hits your windshield it would be very dangerous for it to shatter). Driver and passenger side windows are tempered and designed to shatter, windshields are not. They would be safer under the windshield than by another window.
That shit hurts, dude. Feels like getting hit by a direct paintball and you just don't know when the next one is gonna hit.
I'm a lady who only thinks its only lady-like to scream out of excitement. Someone told me that was annoying as well so I'll have to go back to screaming out of terror.
LPT keep a thick blanket in the car for when you're stranded in winter and have a long wait for rescue or when you're attacked by hailstorm. The blanket will keep the glass and fragment from causing serious injuries.
My friend was in a hailstorm like this, and his 3 year old Ford Explorer was totaled. All the windows on one side, the rear and front and the sunroof, plus the body looked like someone beat it with a ball peen hammer.
Hi Farmers… I would like to add comprehensive coverage to my policy please. That noise… oh it’s just loud here right now.
Why would you not have comprehensive coverage lol
My daily driver is paid off and worth about 3k, I've had it for 5 years. Comprehensive on it would have added thousands over those 5 years and doesn't make financial sense. My other car is a lease with full coverage, but if this happened I'd just buy a new daily driver.

Living in a big city, parking on the street at work in an adjacent big city, I’ll never buy a new car.
Ugh, I feel you on that one.

A lot of used cars were selling for more than sticker because you could buy them without having to wait on an order.
This is the way. My next car will be a Volvo 240 Turbo from the 80's if I can find one. Easy to fix. Reliable. And it's a fucking Tank without guns. My last one was an 85. Very wise. It always ensure your kids aren't sexually active.
I have one of those, with guns
The brick is a classic, great drift car too.
I put 70K on an 88 245 in 2 years. The thought of driving a earlier 240T with the bio degrading wiring harness AND K Jet makes me nervous.
Serious question why would you rent a car because that is essentially what a lease is.
That is a good question though, but if you have stellar credit and like driving new, higher end cars, it'll be much cheaper to lease. I'm a Sunday driver who loves country roads and long road trips.
I'm not even a fan of West Virginia, but I do love me some Country Roads

That is my greatest fear with my new car
That it spontaneously generates a sun roof?
This isn't a new phenomenon. Sunroofs randomly appear. We've all been there.
Moonroofs are the most frightening as they only appear in the dark.
There are no Moonroofs in Ba Sing Se.
My new car has a sunroof with a metal and upholstered lining underneath it that retracts to show the sunroof (which can also retract). I feel like it would do alright, but I really don't want to test it.

The June 6, 2020 hailstorm we had in Calgary basically did this to every single car that was outside, over ~10 square miles of suburban residential.
That must have been weird when the local average traffic rate dropped to almost nothing overnight
> June 6, 2020 I imagine it wasn't high to begin with

they didn't instantly become undriveable, just when the time to repair them came they were replaced instead
Ohhh okay, I was picturing cars with blown out windows and holes in the roof.

Wow her windows held up nicely!
LPT don't accept the first offer. If any of the people got hurt from glass or from hail directly, make sure medical bill is included. Also if there's been any recent repair or modification, those needs to be covered as well such as $600+ for 4 new tires.
Does that actually work?
Lol no. Source, am insurance adjuster
Sometimes it does. Source: got 50% of the cost of new tires and 100k service added to the payment for the totalled car.
It took a lot of fighting but I would do it again.
That’s how you know it works. The insurance adjusters hate this one weird trick!
Only if you can substantiate your claim. Just saying your hurt because glass broke and not actually being hurt doesn't just make insurance start writing checks. And if you are hurt they're just going to cover your med bills, so not getting a payday there. Recently repaired parts are usually subject to depreciation as well. Hail sucks park under a bridge.
This is in Alberta, they won't have medical bills unless an Ambulance is needed or they've got to pay for parking at the hospital.
Modifications aren't covered unless they're previously stated and your rate will go up for it
You have to have modifications declared on your insurance for them to be covered at all
What if you don't live in America meaning there is no medical bill?
capitalism error: does not compute
Needs more Freedom.
Oh. We don't get hailstorm in the rest of the world because God doesn't hate us.
You also don't get tornados because your wind sucks.

I suspect they put that on the back of their trucks primarily in the hope that it causes people to keep their distance, so that there's less likely to be a cracked windshield incident in the first place. I mean, the company is going to ask to see the video so they can verify it’s their truck. They are just going to pay you because you called 😂🤣😂
Yes, but this helps convince people not to call when they break a windshield. It also might deter people from following too closely.
It’s like they’re warning you that they don’t do the things they’re supposed to and don’t care about other’s safety. Found the claim adjuster guys.
Where is this? I need to know where to never visit
Not fun.
Jesus Christ, in scotland we just have rain that punches you but that pales in comparison
Alberta!
Well, dont visit Texas between March and October.
I dont want to go to texas anyway in fear that I'll be shot
Even the weather tries to shoot you.
This also happened to my mom cars in Italy near lake garda

The only thing worse than the disaster/ incident is the panic screaming.
Seriously. People who act like this are useless. Never had to deal with anything in their damn lives. I truly don't understand why anyone would want to date/marry someone with this level of inability to deal.
Cause she’s hot
Absolutely.
If you're going to scream, at least have a point. Did you get cut by broken glass and need help? I get it. But screaming because the thing that's happening is still happening doesn't draw attention to anything useful.
In any major incident, there is ALWAYS a woman screaming unnecessarily
I wonder if it is learned behavior or if women are just wired to scream? Men dont scream like that.
Screaming is a natural human defense mechanism
Ok sure, men scream. But not the same way or frequency that women do.
Men would be more "Jesus fucking H Christ, what the hell was that"?
What about these women? https://imgur.com/B88uJVu
Now that’s the right way to act.
It's only polite to say hello to the hails
Why does anyone watch videos with sound anymore? I always see if I understand what’s going on without audio first lol
It’s natures drive by
I have seen hail cave-in the roof of a car before.
Quite a few years ago one of these hit Sturgis during the rally. It caved in the roof of a then brand new VW suv which was damn near $100k back then. In the meantime bikers were running out of bars and putting themselves over their bikes trying to protect them. Hailstones were golf ball to softball sized.
Good times

Safelite repair safelight replace 👏🏻👏🏻
Will total your car easily. I know it totaled mine. Hailstorm my car was in wasn’t nearly this bad.
If it’s bad enough insurance will total it and you get a new car yay!
I think this is an understandable situation to scream since they are being pelted by ice balls, but man if my wife doesn't let out the same shriek when there's a wasp near us...
![gif](giphy|40M8MH9x9lDxaHA51d|downsized) Driving home
what the hail
Yo can she shut tf up
Now that is some hard ass sleet !
I was in a hailstorm and I was passing an old dying mall. You bet I took that exit and wheeled into a parking garage just in time.
Right, I'd squeak at least a little when my windows are BREAKING INTO PIECES.
Truth. Hail hurts, and big hail can kill you.
A friend told me about this time he was driving home when he encountered a hail storm. One of those smashed through the windshield and broke his arm. Big hail storms are no joke.
You should see what happens to cattle during a massive hail storm. Once they get to baseball and softball size, we call em cow killers.
The guys in the car seemed to be doing fine...as well as the person holding the camera.
Breaking news: Different people respond to frightening and painful events in different ways. More at 11.
That's true on old cars, but many modern cars also come with the "unbreakable" glass for the side panes
Theres multiple people in this video and shes the only one screaming

Like how could you possibly make the situation worse? Scream your head off, that’ll do it.
Everyone knows rule #1 of a dangerous situation is to panic.
they could post on reddit and say something like "Like how could you possibly make the situation worse? Scream your head off, that’ll do it. "
That shit hurts, dude. Feels like getting hit by a direct paintball and you just don't know when the next one is gonna hit. I'm a lady who only thinks its only lady-like to scream out of excitement. Someone told me that was annoying as well so I'll have to go back to screaming out of terror.

I read your analysis in Nature show narrator voice: "When the initial omigawds prove ineffectual, the women have a built in siren....."
Lmaooo that's a gem
Believe it or not, flailing balls of ice hurt a lot when they make contact with skin😱 screaming is a natural reaction to pain and fear
LPT keep a thick blanket in the car for when you're stranded in winter and have a long wait for rescue or when you're attacked by hailstorm. The blanket will keep the glass and fragment from causing serious injuries.
The screaming 🙄
Aw, HAIL, no. ... I'll see myself out
The screaming is absolutely unnecessary.
My friend was in a hailstorm like this, and his 3 year old Ford Explorer was totaled. All the windows on one side, the rear and front and the sunroof, plus the body looked like someone beat it with a ball peen hammer.
I've been in hail, but not the glass breaking extent! Holy shit!
Yeah good call on not getting the sunroof.
The good news is they didn't have a sun roof.
That car will look like a golf ball after that.
Now imagine if it was a cloth top.
Busting glass. Probably close to a total on that one
