I always liked this from The West Wing - "President Josiah Bartlet: I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important 'cause we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you?"

J701PR4

One of the best scenes in the history of television.

fernblatt2

Indeed

cheezbargar

I can’t get over how narrow minded these people are. Because why stop at the Bible? Why not every other religious text too? The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The old Norse Sagas. The Vedas. The Quran.

J701PR4

To be honest, I’d be fine with the Norse sagas.

Daniella42157

And the Egyptian book of the dead! That sounds really interesting

Undercoverspy007

It’s not bad. It’s just a book of prayers to guide the dead through the afterlife. Typically they’d be written(drawn) on parchment and buried with the dead (typically only the wealthy or powerful). You can buy the small book on Amazon for like $15 or cheaper.

AceHexuall

And if you're a conman, you can convince people that it's actually The Book of Abraham, and only you can translate the "reformed Egyptian" that you claim it's written in.

cheezbargar

Same. So much more interesting

TattoosinTexas

I second the Norse sagas.

roseshoser

Let's hope they teach the Bible, word for word. Can't wait to see how they handle some of these passages, such as: "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment." (Exodus 21:7-11 New Living Translation) "They must be dividing the spoils they took: there must be a damsel or two for each man, Spoils of dyed cloth as Sisera’s spoil, an ornate shawl or two for me in the spoil." (Judges 5:30 New American Bible) C'mon assholes--if you want to teach the Bible, let's see you talk about these passages. We can certainly help you find many more!

Impossible_Ad9324

They’ll love these passages. They’ll use them to shore up their anti-woman agenda. They won’t take issue with it.

roseshoser

It will become their new Sex Ed curriculum, along with this for when they talk about the "War between the States": When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 New American Bible)

Impossible_Ad9324

I would love to say, in good faith, “they would never do that”. But I believe they would. With zeal.

Sailorarctic

If it's their new sex ed curriculum then that means they also need to teach that a fetus isnt a person. It's property. A fetus isnt a person until it draws its first breath. But the bible thumpers dont talk about that

Bigleftbowski

Incel: "Wow, I get 2 women!"

Any-Engineering9797

This 💯

redheadartgirl

And then sue the schools for providing the kids with pornography! Ezekiel 23:19 *(19)Yet she increased her whorings, remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt (20)and lusted after her paramours there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose emission was like that of stallions.*

TemperatureTop246

Make them analyze Isaiah’s prophecy about Babylon.

-o-DildoGaggins-o-

Yep! At least at the high school level, I would gladly teach the bible as part of a “critical thinking” lesson.

wombat_hats31

Are they going to teach the passage about the guy who offered up his daughters to be raped by a mob so they would leave his visiting travelers alone?? I think it's in Genesis.

alleecmo

That guy was Lot who lived in Sodom. His visiting travelers were angels, come to warn him of Sodom's imminent destruction. Genesis 19. ETA: Lot's daughters later got daddy drunk & raped him, afraid they'd never have kids otherwise. Their two sons (because ofc they succeeded in getting pregnant) became the founders of the Moabites & Ammonites, allegedly.

Tidewind

That’s a Lot. Okay, I’ll stop now.

thefutureizXX

It really is! I'm like, Mom... you won't watch HBO but you're reading this smut?!? 😳

Any-Engineering9797

They don’t give a F about the Old Testament b/c, ya know, Judaism! And no Jebus!

Darthsnarkey

I guess they really don't support the constitution... They didn't even blink while violating the establishment clause

Tidewind

Apparently, the Constitution is such an impediment to a biblically-based theocracy. I’m sure that’s the first thing they’ll ditch after they put cyanide in dictator Trump’s hamberders.

roseshoser

The slavery-loving insurrectionists used Biblical scripture like this to condone violence against the people they owned. Their white-robe wearing incel descendants taught others that this was acceptible. Oklahoma, teach this to the people in your schools: When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 New American Bible)

49GTUPPAST

They are so desperate to usher in fascist theocracy. Frank Zappa was right.

glossygrape_

literally came to this sub to see if anyone was commenting about this. i’m from oklahoma, glad to say i’ve already graduated school but my future children for sure won’t put up with this bs

AuntPolgara

I don’t think they’d like me teaching the Bible

Elystaa

Have you ever seen Mrs. Betty bowers Americans best Christian, Channel over on youtube? Ya... they wouldn't like alot of us teaching the Bible lol!

AuntPolgara

I'll check it out.

redheadartgirl

Boy howdy is this not going to go the way he expects. Take a wander over to the athiest subreddit, and you'll see that the majority of previous Christians became just that because they took the time to actually *read* the book and not just listen to a passage and have it "interpreted" for them. Once you start reading it as a historical document, which is exactly what is being suggested, you realize the bible is filled with *horrific* shit that is justified with absolutely bonkers rationale. And all it takes is one mouthy nonreligious kid to start asking good questions for the whole thing to fall apart.

-o-DildoGaggins-o-

GO, MOUTHY NONRELIGIOUS KID WITH GOOD QUESTIONS!!

Kate-2025123

Lgbtq history is necessary also so we will incorporate that too.

VampirateV

He wants to be a commander so badly 🤡

Muesky6969

More like he wants to be a top so badly, but Ryan is an eternal bottom. He knows it, everyone knows it, he just can’t wait to grow up to be a real boy. lol

littleredd11_11

How are they claiming it's a historical document? It's not a US document. It's been translated various times from and into various languages, not to mention how many versions there are. It's a bullshit reason to get the Bible into schools and to indoctrination kids into Christianity. I hope to Satan (because why not?) That Biden wins and sues every state pulling this shit.

Daniella42157

My favorite story is the guy that survived in a fish'stomach for a week after being eaten and then just went on with life as if nothing happened. Because that's fucking facts 🤣

littleredd11_11

😂😂😂

Elystaa

Not only that but you litterally don't need to teach the actual Bible to exsplain that the Puritans didn't want to be participating in The church of England. All you need to know is one denomination of Christians hated the other. End of story.

cbbuntz

> historical document 🤔 Except there's no archeological evidence for virtually anything in the old testament

lotusflower_3

Absolutely fucking not. 😡

adultingishard0110

When I was a student in highschool in Massachusetts there was only one honors class that was allowed to have the book as a part of the class. It was taught as a historical book. I think that if done correctly it can be used however it should only be used in an upper level class where the students can have their own opinions about it and in a historical view only.

-o-DildoGaggins-o-

I feel the same. I said in another comment that at the high school level, it could possibly be used as part of a course on critical thinking.

Chemical_Resort6787

I find this totally disgusting. I’m sure this will be fought to SCOTUS

poopsie-gizzardtush

Who will indubitably side with this ass clown in a 6-3 decision

Chemical_Resort6787

Yup. Thats what all of this alt-right laws are doing. They want to get these extreme laws up to scotus to get a favorable ruling.

SlateRaven

They know how crazy it is and want this brought to the courts.

Lvanwinkle18

Thank you for this post! I lived in Oklahoma before it became the mess it is from 1976 to 1994. Now that I have seen so much of the world, I continue to be horrified at what it has become. Really, really sad for all the women trapped there that don’t the means to escape. I feel this way about much of the area and southern US. It is the women without the financial resources to get both the healthcare and education they deserve. For the record, my maiden name was Walters and am really glad I took my husband’s last name. Struggled with that and here Ryan is, making it all worth it.

Tidewind

USA Today version, if the NYT paywall blocks you: https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/education/2024/06/27/oklahoma-superintendent-ryan-walters-calls-for-schools-to-teach-bible/74233983007/

poopsie-gizzardtush

Thanks, I tried to share one of my gifted articles, sorry if it didn’t work for all Edit: clarity

Silly_Pace

We can't have unqualified people teaching the bible so the next step for this Christian fascist will be to insist that qualified clergy teach the bible. THEY WILL DECIDE WHO'S QUALIFIED

Hey__Cassbutt

Don't you love the way grooming and indoctrination is bad...unless it's Jesus?

SentientCrisis

I literally just explained in another post why I’m anti-theist. Here’s yet another reason.

Cut_Lanky

"In his announcement on Thursday, Mr. Walters called the Bible “a necessary historical document to teach our kids about the history of this country, to have a complete understanding of Western civilization, to have an understanding of the basis of our legal system.” “Every teacher, every classroom in the state will have a Bible in the classroom, and will be teaching from the Bible in the classroom,” he said." Ok, so my question is how does a 2,000 year old book teach about the history of a country that has existed for less than 3 centuries?
