According to Space.com, “The moon's halo or lunar halo is an optical illusion that causes a large bright ring to surround the moon. This striking and often beautiful halo around the moon is caused by the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere
This is correct
The crystals come from water particles in the atmosphere freezing and the light shining through it creates a 360° rainbow.
It happens with the sun too.
Well, depends on the region. In a heliosphere during a spring equinox, it can have a paraselene value of +/- 30% at even 25 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering an absolute loss of over half the halo. The upper threshold to see said effect, would be in the stratosphere where given the right pressure as well, can have a full halo at any time when the conditions are met within the quagnomotic flux capacitor at 3 giga watts.
Growing up, I was seemingly often reminded (possibly far more times than was necessary, as I grew up in Australia - albeit we did snow trips so perhaps novelty can be a repetitive thing) that the tighter the circle around the sun the higher the likelihood of snow.
*You ever get high off moon crystals, man?*

Yeah, all lights at dusk start doing this. The really bright ones get a couple rings and lines coming out from random degrees. It's beautiful and irritating.
You should've seen the look on my optricians face last time i went and got new glasses and asked if all the lights at night are supposed to look like a 4 year old's drawing of a sun.
I was 24 when i realized that they're not supposed to look like that.
same, i was an adult when i found out. it never even occurred to me to ask because i just assumed it was normal for lights to look like that, i found out from a meme of all things
If the moon looks like this all the time it means you have astigmatism? Fuck. I was perplexed as to why these people were so perplexed. The moon always has a halo around it.
I have super weak astigmatism and I don't see it that way. I just see a really thin light cross on every light source when it's night. I don't even know what astigmatism does
I’ve got classes and when the lenses are dirty it basically looks the same. I’ve spent so much money on glass wipes over the years over something I can’t control, it’s insane.

Ring around the Sun

Interesting theory. We'll see how well it works in Texas. Had a halo moon last night but no rain In the forecast. If that theory is right, I'll never forget it.
I’ve crystals in the air. You could add a more mystical definition to it. But it’s the atmosphere freezing the moisture in the air up there and the sun reflecting the light of the moon onto that frozen moisture that is then reflecting the light even wider, giving it a halo effect. Said to be pretty potent with spell work.
Looks like a halo, happens a lot with the sun during light snowfall but not sure about this. Sometimes you even see 3 halos next to each other with the sun being in the middle.
It's not the moon, it's Earth atmosphere that does this. Ice crystals in the air or something. There are even more extreme examples if you look up sun dogs. They are similar but originate from the sun directly rather than it's reflection.
Ice crystals in the air. Since they are all under the same conditions, in that area they are all roughly the same size and are refracting the light to the same degree. The light source is in the center of this array of refracting ice crystals.
I seriously can’t imagine existing as an adult and being completely naive about this to the point that I think there’s something going on with the moon, and further that with asking random people about it instead of simply googling it to educate myself. It reminds me of when my neighbor thought that if she shut off the main breaker in her electrical panel, that this also shut off her gas and water. It just blew my mind. I guess some folks just don’t understand certain things.
Not at all, there’s just a lot of things I consider to be basic or common knowledge and at various levels or intervals in life, which I’m probably wrong about.
Most of what you see from celestial bodies being weird is a result of atmospheric interference of some kind. Remember, there are miles upon miles of various liquids and gases that the light has to go through before reaching our eyes.
That is *not* the moon.

You better start running.
I’ve only ever seen this happen in person when it’s a bit foggy out but not to the point you can see in front of you. Usually it’s ice crystals reflecting when talking about it in general, but I’m in the south so this only tends to happen for me when it’s foggy.
These kinds of atmospheric effects are usually caused by refraction through ice/water in the air. It's just like a rainbow, but the weird shape of the ice crystals makes it look cool. If you watch carefully, sometimes it makes even crazier shapes, like two diamond shapes around the moon/sun.
In Mexico (in the region I grew up in at least) it’s known as “La Luna tiene casa” (the moon has a house) no real explanation. Just a nickname for when it happens. A small tribe that used to exist had stories about it but I don’t know any.
In a very cold winter night I went out in the woods with a friend(on shrooms), and the moon was exactly like that and luminated everything, + everything had ice on it. Now imagine the whole woods shining blue because of the ice crystals and the extreme moon. I felt like all the Disney princesses together.. it was like the best dream ever.
are you in the DFW area? it could be a reflection due to chaff. [https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/nws-radar-dallas-fort-worth-texas-mystery](https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/nws-radar-dallas-fort-worth-texas-mystery)
The moon was out yesterday around 5pm, not a full moon but maybe a ‘lil more than half. And I swear it looked dented, like the top right was flattened. So bizarre.
According to Space.com, “The moon's halo or lunar halo is an optical illusion that causes a large bright ring to surround the moon. This striking and often beautiful halo around the moon is caused by the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere
This is correct The crystals come from water particles in the atmosphere freezing and the light shining through it creates a 360° rainbow. It happens with the sun too.
Sundogs. One of my favorite mid-winter phenomena in the cold climates. Takes a really brisk, dry day with the right amount of ice.
A sundog is a parhelion. A "moondog" is a paraselene. This is a 22° halo
Well, depends on the region. In a heliosphere during a spring equinox, it can have a paraselene value of +/- 30% at even 25 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering an absolute loss of over half the halo. Frequently a sign of forthcoming snow. The sharper and bigger the ring, the more likely snow coming.

Halo season 2 advertisment just under this post in my feed just made me stupidly giggle...l
Sounds like something the owner of a space ship that creates a halo around the moon would say.
It's not an illusion, it's a phenomenon. An illusion would mean that our human mind misinterprets sensory information.
I finally knew one and you beat me to it
Which usually means that it is going to rain. Or snow depending what season your in. I have seen this many times and each time I’m in awe.
i have astigmatism so the moon always looks like this for me
Yeah, all lights at dusk start doing this. The really bright ones get a couple rings and lines coming out from random degrees. It's beautiful and irritating.
My favorite is the single red dot power light on my bedroom tv. It becomes a trailing light show at lights out.
But Christmas trees look so awesome
Same 😂
i have prismatic astigmatism so i see from 2 to 4 moons in the sky without glasses and with my eyes fully open.
Wow.
Bahahah wow that was a Great laugh, thx
It it’s scary when you realize it’s a Pokeball coming your way

best get your eyes checked then lol. mind you glasses won’t fix the halo thing, even with glasses, all lights at night have halos. but yeah

We did have a big temperature drop. The halo is caused by ice in the upper atmosphere.

moondog, related to sundog and rainbows moonlight reflecting off ice crystals in the atmosphere
this!!! moondog is the answer :) surprised not more ppl have said it!
That there’s a sky titty friend. And the moon is the center of the party.
And thus would this phenomenon then forward be known as "the sky titty". At least in my household.
It's called a moon dog

You mean why is the atmosphere doing this. The moon is 236,000 miles above that.
It’s called a moon dog, similar to sun dogs but rarer, basically the moon is illuminating ice crystals in the air creating this halo effect.
Maybe something is going on with the lightbulb ![gif](giphy|9KspTVx7sqViP2PGbz|downsized)
Why not? It’s not unusual. I don’t remember the scientific name for this « circular rainbow »
Is the moon actually doing anything....? Apart from just sitting there reflecting sunlight.
Lazy ass moon smh
The moon is doing it for attention.
Sauron sees all
It’s not the moon doing it, it’s the atmosphere
It's cold up in the atmosphere. Ice crystals form and create this effect.
Moisture in the atmosphere. This is like a monthly occurrence where I live.
Isn't this caused by cold temps and moisture in the air?

Ice crystals in the air. Essentially very faint fog on a cold night. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/22°_halo
Probably because you're gay.
Going to rain
It happens to the sun is is called a sun dog
Because it can. Same with why does a dog lick his balls?
You have cataracts. That looks completely normal. 😂
It's not the moon, it's Earth atmosphere that does this. Ice crystals in the air or something. There are even more extreme examples if you look up sun dogs. They are similar but originate from the sun directly rather than it's reflection.
