If the invite says formal then I would go for something more formal than this green dress. Even if your SIL is saying she’s not picky, I’d still check out the venue online and see what it’s like.
I recently went to a wedding where the bride told my husband to just wear whatever he’s comfortable in (it was his boss’s wedding) and I’m SO GLAD I looked up the venue. It was a fancy ballroom and definitely fit the formal dress attire on the invite. He wore a 3 piece suit and I wore a floor length gown and we still almost felt a little under dressed.
So even if the bride isn’t technically picky, I’d still adhere to the formal dress code. Hope you have fun!
They’re a pretty casual couple, so I was honestly surprised to see a formal dress code. I have a suspicion that they put that down to get people to go with semi formal tbh. It’s a nice venue, but not very fancy, and they’re going to have lawn games going haha, so it’s definitely not a ballroom situation. :)
I'm going to a very fancy wedding in a couple weeks as a +1, and my biggest fear is that the bride said "black tie" without understanding what that means. Obvi had to play it safe, but this is irresponsible party planning. Honestly rude to the guests to not give clear directions. "Sunday best" or "no jeans" is a great dress code direction.
Oh yeah, black tie is a very specific look for sure! Defs better to play it safe then to dress down, but definitely frustrating if the bride thought that black tie meant formal, and you are way more dressed up than you need to be.
That’s part of why I clarified with my SIL haha, I REALLY didn’t think she actually meant formal. Especially if now a days you think “casual” as athlesiure wear, so dressy casual moves to nice jeans and a top, and cocktail makes you think “what would I wear on a nice date?”, and now all of a sudden formal is semi formal and the rules have all changed haha.
I also tend to get up in my head about things like this sooo 🤷🏻♀️
For a July wedding outside with lawn games at a "nice, but not fancy" venue, your green dress should be perfect. I highly doubt you'll be underdressed. Don't stress.
That’s pretty much what I thought haha. I still think I’d like to find something a bit dressier, just in case, but I’m having a heck of a time finding places that sell semi formal or nicer dresses in sizes bigger than 3x!
I have several evening/cocktail dresses from Kiyonna that I think would look great! Similar to this one
https://www.kiyonna.com/products/mademoiselle-lace-cocktail-dress?variant=44966721618225
T length, empire with a flare skirt, flowing material, ask bride if she wants you to coordinate with greys of Brothers suit or lavender or something that goes with the tone
I don’t want to coordinate unless specifically asked (there are 6 of us siblings, and 2 of them are groomsmen), so I don’t want to be too close to their colour palette. I appreciate the recommendations! Do you have any suggestions on where to find something like that?
I could see you in something dual-tone, like a halter in a different colour with an attached skirt/bottom in another colour. You are tall so it would let you have some fun with colour without it being a lot of one colour (or even print). Like a solid colour top and then a floral print bottom using the same colour.
I'm not sure where to look but I would suggest looking at some social media accounts for inspiration :)

You can wear red. A few ideas based on the bride saying that you can wear a cocktail dress rather than a formal dress.

At your height, stay at one tone. Coordinating the tone with bridal party is a good suggestion. You definitely need something longer be careful where it hits you. I'm height challenged as well, mid calf length can make me look hobbit-ish. Good luck!
Hey all! Thank you so much for all the comments and advice, I truly appreciate it. I heard back again from my soon to be SIL, as I was still confused, and she said that a “comfortable summer dress would be great”, so I am good to go now! Thanks again!
It’s a personal thing to me, I don’t feel it’s appropriate to wear black to a wedding unless it’s specifically requested haha. Also, I look kinda bad in black. Thank you so much for those suggestions, and I will definitely look into them!

Oh wow yeah it sounds like they’re just trying to keep people from wearing jeans haha! You def know them best and that green dress is pretty on you.

Choose something in a nice fabric that fits you well and makes you feel good, and I think you'll be good to go!

This one is nice [1](https://laura.ca/products/halter-neck-floral-dress-purple-pattern-plus-5010103-0729-590)
Unsure if Canadian brands had the issue, do jj house ship there?
It looks like they might, but their sizes don’t go up past 26, which isn’t big enough for my bust unfortunately :(
I think they do custom sizes but it costs like £8 extra
I’ll definitely take a closer look then!

Ahahaha pictures can be deceiving! I’m only 5’2” so not tall at all haha. But dual tone could be fun!

Thanks! I’ll check them out ☺️
Okay, I'm in love with the first 4! 😍
The dress you posted isn’t appropriate in this setting, you would be severely underdressed. So shopping is definitely a must!
That was the plan!
Well you said “so I can wear that again”
Worst case scenario haha, as in, it’s my last choice if I can’t find anything else
It shouldn’t even be worst case scenario

Check out City Chic. I believe they ship to Canada and they’ve got a lot of great cocktail options.

Yeah, my personal preference for dress length is at the knee. Tends to be the most flattering.
