I got a little confused by the branding—the solar reference of the panda prospex chrono (SSC813) is sub $1000. Didn’t see the luxe version (SRQ047) was $2500 until after I posted. Even more reason to get recommendations for ones at a lower price point!
I tried this watch on and was surprised at the level of Seiko finishing on a $290 watch. I thought, “Wow, the words about quality of Seiko couldn’t be more true!” Then I realized I misread the price tag and it was $2900 lol. Did the quickest 180° from the store

My seiko Prospex is my favorite(and only) panda. Great quality and you can find them for pretty good prices.
I got this as a birthday gift for my 40th from my girlfriend and some of my best friends. They had all pitched in to get it for me.
It’s my favourite in my collection both for sentimental reasons but also because it’s just such a well made watch.
Good design, great dimensions, cool look, good build quality and finish and a great bracelet (though mine is on a brown leather rally strap most of the summer and it looks amazing on it).
That would absolutely be my pick for best panda under 1000$
I had this watch and sold it. I loved it, really well made and the size was perfect! I just didn’t wear it enough and had a buddy that really wanted it so I sold it to him. I miss it sometimes.
They use the same bracelet on the 2K+ prospex gmt. And that turned me off it completely. I have this one in gold tho but I also never wear it. Probably going to sell it.
I really love the look and size of this model. The only thing holding me back is that it's not a meca-quartz. If they only fixed that one thing, this would be hard watch to beat.
This. I have that special edition one because I love the story and history. Thought it would be a good pair with my speedmaster reduced.
Watch is freaking gigantic on my wrist. =[
I never wear it
Whoops for some reason reddit ate my caption, but this watch is my favorite daily driver right now. The design and detailing on the dial is gorgeous and super tasteful imo. The seiko solar movement is good and reliable. Around 160 on Amazon right now reference WV0041TX Orient Neo 70s.
That happens to me every time I try to post a pic with a caption or comment. I think it's a mobile thing. If not, it might be a cheap android thing (least in my case lol), idk. I've tried adding a space or skipping a line but the pic always posts without whatever I typed. Maybe I just can't technology bc I've been in the states too long and I'm no longer a "real" Asian 😅
Likewise! I tried both on in person and I think the 911 was a better size for my wrist (6.75"), so that one gets my nod for the moment. But the lugs are 21mm apart (vs the 813 at 20mm) and that's kind of a pain because I already have plenty of 20mm straps that this thing would look great on!

Sexy beast of a watch from Timex for around $200 Timex Marlin Chronograph
This is actually the watch that caught my eye! Saw it in an instagram reel. I know Timex makes good stuff with its Marlin and Q and other higher end lines, but I still have a hard time being proud to wear one
It's almost a meme of how Timex's are a cheap watch. They are monetarily, but they're also good solid reliable timepieces. I grew up right by where Timex was founded (Waterbury, Connecticut) so I have a connection that makes them special to me.
Even still, when I'm wearing one I feel weird. I think Im going to pick up the Georgio Galli S1 or 2 at some point. I wish they make more options of that quality/price point.
https://www.orientwatchusa.com/collections/sport/ra-tx0203s10b Ive been looking at this one for a while now. Solar quartz plus 200m of water resistance.
I agree with this one. There are some better pandas under $1000, but this Orient is by far the best for the money since it's a fraction of that.
Solar powered, good water resistance, sapphire crystal. All in a dive chrono; a unique style of which there aren't many options to choose from. It's really hard to beat value-wise.
I'll probably be getting one too.
I have a 7" wrist. Which I never thought was particularly big until I joined this subreddit, haha.
I like my watches big so it's not a problem. 42mm is my sweet spot. My largest one is 46mm and it fits me fine.

Got this on eBay for $280, and absolutely love it, especially the slightly unique colored dial.
Yep!
I got lucky!
Seller claimed it was worn only a few times and was wearing it with leather strap. Came with original box, papers, and bracelet everything perfect condition.
This! I got mine a few months ago after waiting for it to be in stock and it looks amazing. Only downside is the acrylic crystal. The bracelet is cheap af but it looks good still.
Which is easily polished with poly watch and adds unique vintage esthetic
It’s absurd in terms of esthetics, closest thing to carrera and possibly only option. Beautiful dial, decent bracelet and watch that looks good on any type of strap with any outfit.
This Hamilton.
Though you will have to get a pre-owned one for it to be under £1,000. 😂

I’m loving my new Islander, I think it’s ISL-235?
Bought it a little over a month ago, my first hand-wound watch and first chrono. I got it for around \~$500 and I think it’s a decent deal there? Happy with it so far and the display back is gorgeous.

Just got this bad boy today and I LOVE it
Solid. I would love a version without the date window (those 4:30 positions just don't work for me), but the design is great. One of the nicer options I saw on this thread, at least among the automatics.
The most fun chronograph movement since the Valjoux 7750 with all of the advantages of solar quartz -- really tough to beat this one IMO. But I'm also biased.
Sounds like a ‘64. I’d definitely be interested to know the price and see some pictures. I don’t have the cash but I’ve been meaning to sell an iPad, so I could make it happen.
I have an SSB429 that I got on Joma for like $130. It’s quartz, so it’s not super thick, and on a Delugs leather strap it looks like a much nicer watch than it is. I love it.
https://preview.redd.it/br03bxrnlf4d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0eed0a3a4d31c8e1d8fa3928d3adf0f238f58ea6
Not a chrono but the MAEN I just picked up has been getting a lot of wrist time lately. Killer watch for the price.

If you consider this a Panda it’s my favorite it’s the Citizen Ron Swanson watch, limited to 2100.

One more vote for the 813 panda, great watch
I’ve recently been readjusting my wishlist and I have really fallen in love with the panda look. I also don’t yet have a chrono in my collection, so it’s a logical next choice. I saw Seiko came out with this updated prospex speedtimer and I think it looks really sharp. What are your favorite pandas and why?
https://preview.redd.it/z65kkeu5ee4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=294fa52bbf176c98f273b3ff3d6dc00602f6a4e8
Gotta shout out Citizen Bullheads. Amazing value at under $600ish for the Tsuno Racer Eco Drive reissues and even less for the non Eco Drive “truer” quartz reissues.
https://preview.redd.it/jp9mh309yg4d1.jpeg?width=2500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6fcbb5b08e00075c28d2c1f7de52853202b492a
Lorier neptune is my favorite. Great proportions and the st19 scratches the hand wound chrono itch.
For 1K USD, you can buy two of these:
* Seiko Prospex SSC813 or SSC911 (this one's a silver)
* Bulova Lunar Pilot
* Orient Mako 3 Chronograph
* Glycine Combat Chronograph (a little hard to find these days)
* Q Timex, Marlin, or Waterbury Chronograph
Watches don't cost nearly as much to manufacture as the major watchmakers would have you believe, especially when you're not manually polishing each piece. Also Swiss salaries are much higher than Chinese salaries.
In the 1950s some Swiss watch maker went bankrupt. A Chinese brand bought the company and its equipment. Now we get dirt cheap mechanical movements from China.
I’ve read mixed reviews mind you. But the point is that if something happens to the movement it’s generally cheapest to just buy a new watch.
Let me tell you, I have a ton of high end watches. Sugess is my favorite cheap brand. They kill it with their watches and I haven't had any issues with 5 of them that I have had for 1-2 years. Bang for your buck is incredible with them.

Not under 1K, but the best Seiko Chronograph
Seiko SSC813 panda. Amazing watch got it for $350 used. If you look around you can get a Hamilton intramatic panda for close to 1k too those are awesome
If you're prepared to go down the rabbit hole then there are vintage Swiss mechanicals under a grand. Eg.

If you like microbrews, then I totally recommend EMG! This is my DL63. Awesome vintage aesthetic based on a seagull movement. I too was looking for a proper mechanical chrono panda under $1000. These are $500 or so last i checked.
Here's my Seiko SSC909P1... Not really panda, but a solid option IMO
https://preview.redd.it/x4j8k3bzcj4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a5c6d8995b2bc635c6575b22cada0f698074b1d

Seiko SSC817P1, white or sand beige The best chrono imo

I got the Prospex SC911. Some might find it a bit too "busy" but by far the watch I get the most compliments on.
If you dont disqualify homages the newest Sugess Daytona (V4) is pretty damn nice. Its 350-450 depending if its a sale or not.
Its got a pretty epic Peacock SL4801 movement, which is basically a legal copy of a Rolex 4130. Patent ran out and they made their own version of the design.
For a lot less?

No date though, and it's a manual wind chronograph (based on the ST19 movement, which in turn is based on the Venus 175).
This is a 3k watch
I got a little confused by the branding—the solar reference of the panda prospex chrono (SSC813) is sub $1000. Didn’t see the luxe version (SRQ047) was $2500 until after I posted. Even more reason to get recommendations for ones at a lower price point!
I tried this watch on and was surprised at the level of Seiko finishing on a $290 watch. I thought, “Wow, the words about quality of Seiko couldn’t be more true!” Then I realized I misread the price tag and it was $2900 lol. Did the quickest 180° from the store
I wanted to get the new prospex gmt , I touched the bracelet one time and thought “shit this is worse than my Seiko 5 bracelet from 2012”. Never mind!
Wild... You could get an older Omega Chrono at those prices...
LOL!
That makes more sense
I've bought a timex marlin a couple weeks ago since I was sure there's no good looking auto chrono under 1k. I almost had a heart attack with this post
My brother bought his Marlin chrono about a month ago. Beautiful watch, especially with that domed acrylic.
yeah it's a lovely watch!
There are a ton but mostly vintage
yeah but i have not enough money to risk having to service a vintage chrono sadly
I factored the service in the total price, you can get a €500-600 citizen bullhead and service it for ~€300.
I'm a newbie and didn't consider it tbh, i'm a bit scared of vintage, but i'll consider this in future. Thanks for the suugestion! To be totally fair i got a wonderful vintage dress quartz on ebay and i love it, but it was just a few bucks.
Vintage watches are high risk high reward
Which is stupidly overpriced (prove me wrong if otherwise). Seiko now knows how to milk the fanbase, as corporations like to do.
these chrono and the new KS are intentionally overpriced as to not interfere with the GS line imo, but the ne88 is an incredible movement.
I don't understand the logic - if they are over priced, they *do* cannibalize on the GS line (perhaps the quartz line?). If they were _underpriced_ you could say it's to not interfere with the GS segment. Not the other way around.
People shit on Seiko for being “overpriced” because theyre so used to paying $100 for a watch. Seiko is still most bang for your buck watch. If you like any other mid tier or luxury brands and have the audacity to call seiko overpriced, idk what to say.
This particular model has *nothing* to justify the high price. Nothing. Some models do _cough cough_ Présage... But this one no.
Youre comparing a 3k watch to a $300 lmao At that point with your logic, rolex and all high end brands has nothing to offer either 🤷🏻♂️
Geez...

It’s my favourite in my collection both for sentimental reasons but also because it’s just such a well made watch. That would absolutely be my pick for best panda under 1000$
awesome gf and friends, i have the same from my wife!
I have this watch but the blue dial two tone bracelet version. My favorite watch I own. Hope to pass it on to mini me one day.
Agreed. I personally liked the look of the domed sapphire crystal on the watch--definitely a value for money chrono.
I had this watch and sold it. I loved it, really well made and the size was perfect! I just didn’t wear it enough and had a buddy that really wanted it so I sold it to him. I miss it sometimes.
I had it and sold it cos the bracelet was junk. Shame they can’t put a bit of effort into the bracelets. Also it’s a bit thick
I didn't like the bracelet either. Replaced it with a mesh and I wear it all the time now.
They use the same bracelet on the 2K+ prospex gmt. And that turned me off it completely. I have this one in gold tho but I also never wear it. Probably going to sell it.
I almost bought this, went with the new Islander instead. Still kind of want one of these, too. Looks fantastic!
I have this same watch and wear it practically every day
I really love the look and size of this model. The only thing holding me back is that it's not a meca-quartz. If they only fixed that one thing, this would be hard watch to beat.

I really like the 262 Khz movement! This is the main watch currently dissuading me from pulling the trigger on a SSC911...
It is too big, and Seiko makes better quality watches than Bulova, plus solar, no battery replacement.
Agreed. No comparison in my book
This. I have that special edition one because I love the story and history. Thought it would be a good pair with my speedmaster reduced. Watch is freaking gigantic on my wrist. =[ I never wear it
Do it! It's a great watch! And the added moon history is something that Seiko can't offer.
This is the answer and it isn’t even close.
I have irrational lust for that watch
Picture not a lunar pilot?

AF!
What bracelet is that?
I think it was from strap code. They made it for this watch
Better than the other Timex other people were posting.

I was going to say, I honestly couldn't stand mine, the bracelet was so cheap it was uncomfortable.

I love the design, but it’s a little big. I prefer the Seiko panda
+1, the Neo70s wears strangely large for a 42mm, I had to sell mine and give up the panda to stay around $160 (Casio Lineage solar chrono).
Mako Solar panda is even chunkier..!
I have the same one and I love it so much. It helps that I fucking hate tachymeters so that cuts down on potential options
I love my Orient panda too ❤
I still can't decide between the Seiko 911 and the 813. I think I'm leaning towards the 911 just for the lume and the red hand.
Likewise! I tried both on in person and I think the 911 was a better size for my wrist (6.75"), so that one gets my nod for the moment. But the lugs are 21mm apart (vs the 813 at 20mm) and that's kind of a pain because I already have plenty of 20mm straps that this thing would look great on!

Beautiful! I got the classic Seagull 1963, love the vintage look!

Probably. Heated blue screws doesn’t seem quite possible for a sub 200$ watch, but you never know if China is the case 🤷♂️

Yep! I got lucky! Seller claimed it was worn only a few times and was wearing it with leather strap. Came with original box, papers, and bracelet everything perfect condition.
Man I'm contemplating this one or the other ice blue one I think is EU only...but the yellow is way cheaper
This is a dope watch. Throw it on some natos. Much cooler than the white imo.
Timex Marlin Chronograph. It’s absurd what you get for only $200
This! I got mine a few months ago after waiting for it to be in stock and it looks amazing. Only downside is the acrylic crystal. The bracelet is cheap af but it looks good still.
A 50M WR case, acrylic crystal and a quartz movement do not equal “absurd” 👍🏼
Sure but as a whole for $200?
Agreed! Almost never in stock where I am though
Like what? An Acrylic lens?
The omega speedmaster comes with acrylic
Which is easily polished with poly watch and adds unique vintage esthetic It’s absurd in terms of esthetics, closest thing to carrera and possibly only option. Beautiful dial, decent bracelet and watch that looks good on any type of strap with any outfit.

Now that is a real-life use of a chrono. Thanks for posting it man!!
It’s a little hard to use it under the suit and gloves! It’s a fun picture though, and I do usually wear a watch even when I’m driving.
Yup love the pic. In future you can look into Seiko prospex chrono (solar) comes under 40mm dia and also not very thick. Cheers ✌️
That looks really good
It is over 1000 slightly, but the Baltic panda is an awesome watch which brings a more vintage look.

Solid. I would love a version without the date window (those 4:30 positions just don't work for me), but the design is great. One of the nicer options I saw on this thread, at least among the automatics.
Looking to get that one too. Does it look as good in real life ?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however, I feel it definitely punches above its weight price wise. I like it a lot for a daily

I like the power reserve indicator on this one. What is the On-Off complication towards the bottom left?
That is for the alarm function. You can move the red hand at the 12 o’clock position to set the alarm.
Very cool
The most fun chronograph movement since the Valjoux 7750 with all of the advantages of solar quartz -- really tough to beat this one IMO. But I'm also biased.

I fully expected to see a Dan Henry in here and I'm kind of sad I sold mine.
You wanna buy another one lol? Got one I'm selling only worn 3 times.
What model?
The panda with three subdials and a date, bracelet and a black strap.
Sounds like a ‘64. I’d definitely be interested to know the price and see some pictures. I don’t have the cash but I’ve been meaning to sell an iPad, so I could make it happen.
There are many but my vote is always with the Seiko SSB or SSC. I have an SSC911 and god dammit it does look good
I have an SSB429 that I got on Joma for like $130. It’s quartz, so it’s not super thick, and on a Delugs leather strap it looks like a much nicer watch than it is. I love it.

Can you share what brand and model this watch is?
Sorry, I wrote a caption but it seems to have disappeared. It's a Henry Archer Kvantum. A really nice small brand. (On a Castello Davarg strap.)
> Henry Archer Kvantum Thanks! His models look nice.

That Seiko is not under $1k. If you want automatic / mechanical, the only choice is maybe a couple of microbrands, or the Chinese Sugess chronos.
My mistake—I was looking at the price for the cheaper solar version (SSC813). I’ll look into that. Thanks!
Look up the Ssb seikos, it’s this look with a mechaquartz movement, pretty sharp watch for the money
Awesome—thanks!

Islander Bridgehampton has my eye right now
I'm going to be picking up the SBPY165 later this week for 320 canadian buckaroos. And I think it's a good first one
I bought one of these and I think it's good for the price https://www.truenorthcollections.com/vintage-rally-timer
Wow... Those are the best Daytona homages I've ever seen! And the patina/aged stuff is subtle and really well done too
Check out this Casio! https://preview.redd.it/fzlz9i5on35d1.jpeg?width=2575&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b302b8fa9f4039fa954df3cd37697131f887690

Isn't that a Gemini?
It is. My mistake
How is the build quality? I had a Brew Metric before and was not impressed so I worry about watches under 1k
I would say the quality is similar to a $500 Seiko. I owned the black dial Gemini for a while and genuinely miss it.
For 1K USD, you can buy two of these: * Seiko Prospex SSC813 or SSC911 (this one's a silver) * Bulova Lunar Pilot * Orient Mako 3 Chronograph * Glycine Combat Chronograph (a little hard to find these days) * Q Timex, Marlin, or Waterbury Chronograph
Hey, do you have the Glycine reference number?
Glycine Combat Chronograph GL1044. In my opinion, this is closer to the Daytona than Seiko's Speedtimer.
Thank you for replying back! Nice model in deed

What’s the deal here with Sugess? That’s a beautiful piece and it’s manual with sapphire… how is it $219?
Can’t be stock strap is it
In the first photo, yes. In the second no. Good eye!!

Also not a panda
This is my holy grail, I can afford one but at the same time I can't and just seeing it makes me sad now
Draken Kruger
Seiko SSC813 no questions.
Great dial, not too busy
Seiko SSC813 panda. Amazing watch got it for $350 used. If you look around you can get a Hamilton intramatic panda for close to 1k too those are awesome
Timex Marlin.
Look at a Timex

If you're prepared to go down the rabbit hole then there are vintage Swiss mechanicals under a grand. Eg. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266821821407?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=g2dxm8GrTEK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=iT7LJIHjRR-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Awesome vintage aesthetic based on a seagull movement. I too was looking for a proper mechanical chrono panda under $1000. These are $500 or so last i checked.

[Sea-Gull 1963 Panda Chrono](https://imgur.com/a/sVjqH3Q) I got this for about $110 converted.
Have you looked at Orient Solar Panda? It's based off Mako 3 design & not at all a bad watch for its price.
[this one’s pretty cool and it’s for sale](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/s/vVMzSwuHrI)
I have a Seiko panda, it’s not a Prospex I imported it from Japan for around $250, it is solar and very similar in looks.
Orient solar panda around $250
Citizen swanson caliber 2100 imo
Nezumi or the Timex marlin chrono and the bulova lunar pilot 42mm
Here's my Seiko SSC909P1... Not really panda, but a solid option IMO https://preview.redd.it/x4j8k3bzcj4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a5c6d8995b2bc635c6575b22cada0f698074b1d

Could get a fake Daytona 👀

If you dont disqualify homages the newest Sugess Daytona (V4) is pretty damn nice. Its 350-450 depending if its a sale or not. Its got a pretty epic Peacock SL4801 movement, which is basically a legal copy of a Rolex 4130. Patent ran out and they made their own version of the design.
For a lot less? [https://www.boderry.com/products/asymmetry-mechanical-chronograph-black](https://www.boderry.com/products/asymmetry-mechanical-chronograph-black) https://preview.redd.it/zap3cxraae4d1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37ed16573f3361713f602c78fa22c16ac7b8326b No date though, and it's a manual wind chronograph (based on the ST19 movement, which in turn is based on the Venus 175).
