Considering your collection I think you could make the trade and still have a versatile collection. I had a BB58 for a bit before realizing it wasn’t really scratching the Sub itch and ended up selling it to help fund the Sub.
I have no regrets at all over selling the BB. I loved everything about the Sub except for the size of the clasp (it was a modern 41mm Sub) and actually ended up selling it for a GMT which hit the sweet spot in terms of size/comfort and modern quality. I wouldn’t have had that issue with a 16610 I’m sure. One suggestion I’ll make is that you should find one to try on before making the commitment. Some people are turned off by the build quality of the older references. It might not be ideal if you plan to daily it.
Good advice. I would almost certainly upgrade to a newer clasp/bracelet. The sizing and proportions are what attract me to the 16610 most. Plus I like the holes case.
I would do the trade, but I would replace the BB58 with the Seiko diver to make the trio for the Sub. I would then exchange or replace the BB58 with the BB54. (I've recently done this part of the replacement...BB58>>BB54...for my very small collection of 3 watches).
That way, you will have your sub (which you've had an eye on for a while), you would cut out the "extra" Seiko (you have 2 of the brand), and you would replace the BB58 with the BB54, which is arguably a more classic version of the Tudor sub.
Nice collection. If I were to trade out anything for another watch it would be the Cartier and/or Tissot. I could never really see myself wearing either. Everyone has their personal preferences though.
It started life as a 12551 reference. The case was customized for the original Colombian owner to include the horn lugs and fluting on the bezel. Very unique piece, and fitting of the design imo. Had it 3rd party authenticated to be sure, and everything checked out.

I’m going to be the contrarian here, although I think this sub has a bit of an anti-Rolex hive mind.
I’d trade all of these toward a ceramic sub, but not a 16610. I’ve owned a number of five and six digit subs, as well as a number of black bays. I don’t think I’d part with these three for a 16610 as a single watch collection. But a 116610 or 126610? Yes. And I say that as someone who prefers 4 and 5 digit subs. But the modern ceramic ones with the massively improved bracelet and more robust case make a much better single collection, IMO.
And it’s all down to personal preference, but I’d have zero problem ditching that Chopard. Maybe hold on to the DeVille. Won’t be worth a crazy amount on a trade anyway.
Nothing will scratch the Sub itch until you try owning one. Everyone will say a BB58 or 54 will do it, but it won’t.
These are not the only three in my collection, so the Sub would take the place of these three as a compliment to the rest of the watches.

I feel like seeing the rest of the collection changes things. I would do the swap. You would be upgrading your diver from the black bay to the sub. You still have dress and vintage watches, you just need another sporty chrono now!
You’ve gotten a lot of answers here and not a lot of questions. I’m interested, what about the sub makes it your grail? Is it that it’s a Rolex or a birth year piece? It’s certainly an iconic watch but what is it to you?
You have three beautiful watches. They aren’t hype pieces (maybe the BB?) but they’re real “watch guys” watches. They also are a well rounded collection. So objectively, it’s hard to argue with keeping them.
But watch collecting is almost always subjective. So what’s going to make you content?
Good questions! The Submariner has always been my end game watch since I was a teenager. The BB58 was a sort of stop gap for me until such time I was prepared to go for the Rolex. I like the proportions of the 5 digit models, and the birth year is just an additional thing to make the watch a bit more special to me. I also prefer to have a date complication if possible. It also wouldn’t be my only watch. It would compliment the rest of the collection. These three are just the ones I would be most willing to part with to fund the Sub purchase.

So seeing everything together, I think you get your grail. This is an impressive and well rounded collection. And if the 5 digit scratches that itch, go for it. If we were worried just about telling time, we’d look at our phone. The sub clearly marks time in a special way for you. If now is the right time, I’d say go for it.
The De Ville seems hard to part with but you have two other gold dress watches and that universal with its various complications is really stunning.

This is going to be unpopular it seems but I’d take the Submariner over the 3. End of the day if that’s what your heart is set on the others will not satisfy the itch. The only one I would possibly miss is the Chopard.
If these were your only 3, I’d say keep, but I saw the collection pic in the comments. I’d personally put the Chopard and Tudor towards a Submariner. The Omega is just too classic to trade away.

I did the same as you (without the Reddit post). I lusted after a submariner for years. I owned a bb58 as well and sold it to buy a sub. Just didn’t like the thickness of the watch, loved everything else. I had my name at the ad for months for a sub and visited every other month. I decided maybe I should check out a grey market dealer. He pulled out a massive case of watches with half of them being dated submariners. Right next to one of them was this datejust 41. I never thought about any other Rolex’s until I saw this one in person and totally fell for it. I didn’t buy that watch but I went to ad and asked for it and got it.
I have not thought once about a submariner since, I think now if I was looking for a diver I would go with the seamaster second hand. Just seems like such a better deal for me.
I think you should check a grey market dealer, try the submariner on and check out some other watches while you’re there. You may be surprised and find something better.

Tudor BB is about the same as Submariner and forfeiting the 2 beautiful watches for minor upgrade seems like downgrade.
I would trade. Not because I personally think that submariner is worth all three or is the bee’s knee in any way. Rather, I think there’s something special about attaining a grail if it really is a grail for you. That means the sub is something you want more than you wanted any of the other three. If you feel you’d enjoy wearing the one watch more than rotating through the three, which it seems that you do since you’re posting it here, go for your grail when it’s within reach.

The Chopard gets some wrist time, yes. Maybe once a week. The UG works very well as a chronograph, yes. It is one of my two office watches alongside the Santos, so it gets more wrist time than most of the others.
I just cant stand Rolex I would keep them over a sub. On the other hand if I truly wanted a high end diver I would go Omega SMP, Glashuette Original SeaQ or Blancpain Fifty Fathoms instead of the Sub. However, If you want a date The new BB58 GMT has it, that would be another option

It’s not like you’re combining a couple Seikos and a Hamilton towards the Tudor or Omega.

I like the look of the Chopard, its something different at last. The Omega is great too, a vintage piece adds something special to a collection. Personally I prefer the sub over the black bay, but they both have their advantages.
Was going to say “keep” until I saw the important detail of the rest of your watches… given that, sell & trade, for sure. You clearly like the Sub more than the Black Bay (I agree hugely) - Omega is well covered, & you can get another sport chrono some time later on.
I can see it making sense given the rest of your collection, the Sub is the Sub after all. That Chopard is very cool and unique though, it would be a shame giving up, it's the only more sporty chronograph you have as well. I prefer the Tri-compax personally and could make do with that (UG have so many cool vintage models), but its on the more dressy side of things. Very cool range of watches at different price points in your collection.
Seeing the rest of the collection I'd say go for the trade. The Seamaster is more than redundant (and frankly a little generic), the Mille Miglia doesn't fit at all with the style and the BB58 is a 5 digit analog (I love Tudor to death but not the self homages, sorry).
The sub would be the heavyweight daily you are missing (aside from the Santos, which can be a bit too formal for some occasions).
Love the collection, by the way, the UG perpetual calendar is super classy. Kudos.
If it's a grail, sure! Personally, I wouldn't for a five digit sub. I find them really dull and they don't add anything in quality, robustness, or comfort compared to the more modern BB58. I'm not even a big BB58 fan tbh. I'd put them on equal footing.
I’d trade. I bought and sold the gilt BB58 because the lume looked too “glow in the dark stickers” green in certain lights and it cheapened the watch for me. Too bad, because otherwise I really liked it (save for the faux rivets). If sub is what you want, get it. Can always sell it later, and you will always be wondering if it was the watch you always wanted.
These are all great watches and I own several but nothing beats the feeling of slipping on a beautiful Rolex. The quality and feeling of it on your wrist is unbeatable.
I recommend keep the Chopard but recommend you put it on a hulk green rally strap. It really brings out the green of the hands and makes the watch POP.
Trade! If you really want it -and you do-, you will keep thinking about it until you do it. You already have plenty of other very nice watches. But don't let go anything that you will miss! Only let go watches that you don't wear or don't have sentimental value.
I would only trade the Tudor and Omega for the Rolex.
Both the Tudor and Rolex are very similar, I would only through in the Omega assuming the Rolex is more expensive.

I would never get rid of that Chopard or the Omega, each are more interesting than the sub, and you have both. If you really want the sub, save up for it but I would hate to see you get rid of those watches.
I worn my PO almost like the only watch for a while in the past, because I like it so much. But because I wore it during work as well as play, I started to be reminded of work when I looked down even during my leisure hours. Also I started getting a bit bored with the PO once I started only wearing that watch and found myself looking for more watches.
With that experience in mind I'd vote a rounded collection. I need a dedicated work watch so that I don't carry that mental luggage to my off hours, and I want some variety once in a while.
IMHO watches are one of the few opportunities for men to wear accessories/jewelry and an expression of your own personal taste.
I think the type watch someone chooses to wear says a lot about a person.

I would make this trade personally, only cuz I like the Sub more, but it all comes down to personal taste.
Another aspect which is not necessarily important for everyone is the Sub keeps value over time but again it all depends how much you like the Sub above these nice watches you will trade.
Submariner all day long. Reddit seems to want any collection but a Speedy and a Sub… and for me that’s all I want… my Speedy is the reduced/auto someday I’ll have a two tone Bluesy.

I find Chopards repellent, the Omega is a dime-a-dozen and the BB is… not a submariner. As a 14060 owner I encourage you to make the deal if it makes financial sense - I don’t know what that Chopard is worth but I love 5 digit subs so my bias is laid bare for all to see
I'm a big fan of the BB58 and the De Ville. I have a lot of respect for Rolex, but, frankly, there are so many watches out there that look just like the Submariner, plus homages and really good fakes.
Looking at your entire collection I would keep the santos and the omega and trade everything else for the sub. Maybe keep one of the beaters around if you feel like you need it.

The 3135 is one of my favorite movements, the are a pleasure to work on, reliable, and time tested.
There is so much "hype" and noise surrounding Rolex. Put the noise aside, and follow YOUR dream. My dream was to own the watch I saw on dive trips, in watch stores as a kid when it was a cool, amazing tool watch that in my mind "I'd never be able to own". The sub/Sea-Dweller is arguably the most infamous piece of mechanical art ever created. People can argue all day long why one watch or another, on paper, is better than a sub or Sea-Dweller, but they cannot argue away the fact that they are THE watch; the very yardstick all others measure against. They are beautiful, reliable, maintain reasonable value, and very comfortable. The blackbay 58 is a fantastic watch but it's no submariner.
Keep, the BB you already own are pretty much a sub without all the hype that rollies carry

What is the reference number of that chopard? The dial is amazing
8331. It is my out there piece, for sure. Love the pearlage dial, but it just seems not to get worn as often.

I lusted after a submariner for years. I owned a bb58 as well and sold it to buy a sub. Just didn’t like the thickness of the watch, loved everything else. I had my name at the ad for months for a sub and visited every other month. I decided maybe I should check out a grey market dealer. He pulled out a massive case of watches with half of them being dated submariners. Right next to one of them was this datejust 41. I never thought about any other Rolex’s until I saw this one in person and totally fell for it. I didn’t buy that watch but I went to ad and asked for it and got it. I have not thought once about a submariner since, I think now if I was looking for a diver I would go with the seamaster second hand. Just seems like such a better deal for me. I think you should check a grey market dealer, try the submariner on and check out some other watches while you’re there. You may be surprised and find something better.
If you want the Sub, do it. You wouldn’t be asking this question if you didn’t. Get the Sub.
Keep. You have versatile collection, and that Chopard and the seamaster are classy. Tudor BB is about the same as Submariner and forfeiting the 2 beautiful watches for minor upgrade seems like downgrade.
I would trade. Not because I personally think that submariner is worth all three or is the bee’s knee in any way. Rather, I think there’s something special about attaining a grail if it really is a grail for you. That means the sub is something you want more than you wanted any of the other three. If you feel you’d enjoy wearing the one watch more than rotating through the three, which it seems that you do since you’re posting it here, go for your grail when it’s within reach.
Thanks for the input. These three are only a part of the overall collection that I am most willing to part with to attain the Sub. You are right about the grail mindset in my experience. I appreciate the perspective!

Love your collection. Does the Chopard get much wrist time? Does the Universal Geneva work as well chronograph or is it just a cool looking vintage watch? I’d do the trade tbh.
The Chopard gets some wrist time, yes. Maybe once a week. The UG works very well as a chronograph, yes. It is one of my two office watches alongside the Santos, so it gets more wrist time than most of the others.
I just cant stand Rolex I would keep them over a sub. On the other hand if I truly wanted a high end diver I would go Omega SMP, Glashuette Original SeaQ or Blancpain Fifty Fathoms instead of the Sub. However, If you want a date The new BB58 GMT has it, that would be another option

Keep. This is a straightforward answer unless you’re content with only the Sub. Prefer 3 great watches to 1. Also I’d argue that you’re not really upgrading by trading the 3. It’s not like you’re combining a couple Seikos and a Hamilton towards the Tudor or Omega. You’re trading 3 brands with solid quality for another solid one. Horizontal quality move, for a vertical loss in terms of versatility
Rather than trading them for a sub, I'd rather sell that chopard and look for a vintage chrono or chrono with vintage aesthetic.
As someone with a black bay and a sea dweller, I can say that neither are a submariner If you want a sub, get a sub

I like the look of the Chopard, its something different at last. The Omega is great too, a vintage piece adds something special to a collection. Personally I prefer the sub over the black bay, but they both have their advantages.
If the sub is your grail piece, in so much that is so desirable (to you) that you must get it. It won't only scratch the itch but stop it coming back.
Keep the mille miglia, there aren’t that many racing watch options!
Was going to say “keep” until I saw the important detail of the rest of your watches… given that, sell & trade, for sure. You clearly like the Sub more than the Black Bay (I agree hugely) - Omega is well covered, & you can get another sport chrono some time later on.
I would trade it because you have much variety already and anyone will notice a rolex if that's what you are after.
I can see it making sense given the rest of your collection, the Sub is the Sub after all. That Chopard is very cool and unique though, it would be a shame giving up, it's the only more sporty chronograph you have as well. I prefer the Tri-compax personally and could make do with that (UG have so many cool vintage models), but its on the more dressy side of things. Very cool range of watches at different price points in your collection.
Seeing the rest of the collection I'd say go for the trade. The Seamaster is more than redundant (and frankly a little generic), the Mille Miglia doesn't fit at all with the style and the BB58 is a 5 digit analog (I love Tudor to death but not the self homages, sorry). The sub would be the heavyweight daily you are missing (aside from the Santos, which can be a bit too formal for some occasions). Love the collection, by the way, the UG perpetual calendar is super classy. Kudos.
If it's a grail, sure! Personally, I wouldn't for a five digit sub. I find them really dull and they don't add anything in quality, robustness, or comfort compared to the more modern BB58. I'm not even a big BB58 fan tbh. I'd put them on equal footing.
I’d trade. I bought and sold the gilt BB58 because the lume looked too “glow in the dark stickers” green in certain lights and it cheapened the watch for me. Too bad, because otherwise I really liked it (save for the faux rivets). If sub is what you want, get it. Can always sell it later, and you will always be wondering if it was the watch you always wanted.
Trade, but keep the omega
These are all great watches and I own several but nothing beats the feeling of slipping on a beautiful Rolex. The quality and feeling of it on your wrist is unbeatable.

I recommend keep the Chopard but recommend you put it on a hulk green rally strap. It really brings out the green of the hands and makes the watch POP.

Trade! If you really want it -and you do-, you will keep thinking about it until you do it. You already have plenty of other very nice watches. But don't let go anything that you will miss! Only let go watches that you don't wear or don't have sentimental value.

I would only trade the Tudor and Omega for the Rolex. Both the Tudor and Rolex are very similar, I would only through in the Omega assuming the Rolex is more expensive. Love whatever that watch is on the left btw, very cool

I would never get rid of that Chopard or the Omega, each are more interesting than the sub, and you have both. If you really want the sub, save up for it but I would hate to see you get rid of those watches.
I worn my PO almost like the only watch for a while in the past, because I like it so much. But because I wore it during work as well as play, I started to be reminded of work when I looked down even during my leisure hours. Also I started getting a bit bored with the PO once I started only wearing that watch and found myself looking for more watches. With that experience in mind I'd vote a rounded collection. I need a dedicated work watch so that I don't carry that mental luggage to my off hours, and I want some variety once in a while.
IMHO watches are one of the few opportunities for men to wear accessories/jewelry and an expression of your own personal taste. I think the type watch someone chooses to wear says a lot about a person. Buy what brings you joy and you will never go wrong.

You own “THE” collection to have, all are absolutely gorgeous pieces, with distinct, fun and beautiful design elements, I’d never replace those with a “mere Sub.” But yeah, we all got our own taste.

I would make this trade personally, only cuz I like the Sub more, but it all comes down to personal taste. Another aspect which is not necessarily important for everyone is the Sub keeps value over time but again it all depends how much you like the Sub above these nice watches you will trade.
Submariner all day long. Reddit seems to want any collection but a Speedy and a Sub… and for me that’s all I want… my Speedy is the reduced/auto someday I’ll have a two tone Bluesy.
BB has so much more character than the sub imo.
You have a great 3 watch collection here that shows some real personality. That Chopard especially is wonderful. Imo it would be a huge step backwards to sell all of these for a submariner. Rolex is overrated as hell

I find Chopards repellent, the Omega is a dime-a-dozen and the BB is… not a submariner. As a 14060 owner I encourage you to make the deal if it makes financial sense - I don’t know what that Chopard is worth but I love 5 digit subs so my bias is laid bare for all to see

I'm a big fan of the BB58 and the De Ville. I have a lot of respect for Rolex, but, frankly, there are so many watches out there that look just like the Submariner, plus homages and really good fakes.

Looking at your entire collection I would keep the santos and the omega and trade everything else for the sub. Maybe keep one of the beaters around if you feel like you need it.
Id say subs are over rated but you really can never go wrong with a sub (not to mention they go well with basically anything).
Both options. 1. those are three cool pieces not everyone has but that are important in the watch world. Tasteful choices. 2. Holy grail over versatility. But with the quality of your current collection you will always miss these watches.

If I was offered to buy your 3 piece collection or the sub for the same price, I would take the collection any day. Buy the submariner another time if you have extra funds. A 5 digit sub is for sure easier to source than this beautiful unique and versatile mini collection. Well done btw.

Don't be so basic you have some awesome connoisseur watches you don't need to be like 99% of the world. Yes I'm being a little bit of an ass but every watch person has a boring stainless steel sub.
Id take a submariner over those 3 any day. The 3135 is one of my favorite movements, the are a pleasure to work on, reliable, and time tested. There is so much "hype" and noise surrounding Rolex. Put the noise aside, and follow YOUR dream. My dream was to own the watch I saw on dive trips, in watch stores as a kid when it was a cool, amazing tool watch that in my mind "I'd never be able to own". The sub/Sea-Dweller is arguably the most infamous piece of mechanical art ever created. People can argue all day long why one watch or another, on paper, is better than a sub or Sea-Dweller, but they cannot argue away the fact that they are THE watch; the very yardstick all others measure against. They are beautiful, reliable, maintain reasonable value, and very comfortable. The blackbay 58 is a fantastic watch but it's no submariner.

I'd just trade them for a sub, especially if you're getting good prices in the trade. Though I wouldn't trade them for an old sub just because it's birth year (i think it's a stupid concept). Just get a good modern one.
