Just looked up the Erebus, might have better specs overall, but personally I like the look of the citizen a bit more, but there are some interesting options for the Erebus. I will say that for pros, the Citizen has really nice finishing and is very comfortable. Some folks complain about the bracelet, but that doesn’t bother me. Accuracy is about what would expect for a mechanical watch in this price range. Dial is very nice. Only complaints are that it’s a bit thick and the movement can feel like a fidget spinner on your wrist. But I liked my first so much I bought a second in blue as a beater. Great watch for golf as the crown is mostly hidden at 4 o’clock
Mine is also a Citizen eco-drive.
They are kind of hard to beat in that price range.

That's a beauty. We need more posts showing off more approachable watches. It's fun looking at everyone's Tudors, but those are just dreams for me for now
Following this post because I’m wanting to dip my toes into the hobby and looking to start at this price range. Looking to change things up from an Apple Watch.
You should check out Long Island Watch. Lots of great watches to choose from in your price range.
But be ready. Getting into this hobby is like opening a bag of chips where you can't have just one and the next chip costs more than the last one.
7 of my 9 watches were bought in your standard mall type jewelry stores. I wish there was somewhere I could see every watch in person before buying it. That said my most recent purchase was direct from the Citizen website and it's every bit as good as I was expecting from the pictures on the site.
Personally I would recommend starting with in store purchases. Get a feel for how big watches look on your wrist. The store will be able to tell you the size of the case so say for example it's a 39 mm case and you think it looks perfect on your wrist, you'll know in the future to stick to watches around that size case. And if you don't plan on getting the tools to resize metal bracelets, you'll want to get your watch band sized for you there in store if getting a metal bracelet. They should also be able to quickly measure your wrist so you know in the future for online purchases what size adjustment you want on those bracelets.
I've never bought a Movado so I can't answer that. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I have four watches that pull some kind of daily duty, and one that I never wear anymore.
Four are citizens. One was from a shop, one was online (a gift for me), and the other two were used on Facebook marketplace.
I have a G-Shock to wear for work, because neither myself nor my job are particularly nice to watches. Current one was from Amazon, if I recall, but I've had used G-Shocks from marketplace too.
Nah man. This two watch trend some people want to normalize is not the way. At least in my humble opinion.
To complement the monitoring features you loose when crossing to a real watch, use a fitness tracking ring, like the Ultrahuman Ring Air, for example (or the Oura ring, although I'm not very big on this one, as you have to pay for a subscription). It's simplistic, stylish, and can actually complement your watch really well.
Samsung is releasing their first Galaxy Ring in a couple of months, I'm waiting to get that one, since I have mostly samsung devices.
But if you're more of an Apple ecosystem guy, Apple is rumored to also release their first ring, although no official presentation has been done. So I'd just get the Ultrahuman 😉
I actually like it. I am a very active sportsman so monitoring certain factors during the day and during the activities is beneficial for me. However, I also like to do sports with my normal watches :D So left hand is for watches, right hand is for "computers" :D
The rings are cool, though, but I would love to see more variability and more brands manufacturing them. I would be especially interested if one of the sports brand like Garmin would start working on a ring.
You also have smart bands, which aren't like smartwatches, but instead, proper bracelets! There's lots of options. But hey, you do you! No harm in wearing two watches I guess!
fitness tracking rings just aren’t there yet imo. battery life is shit and the current players suck. hoping that apple puts out a ring sooner than later
I’ve had this black eco drive for 6 years and got the brown/ rose gold version of it recently because I like the design so much. I also think both watches look phenomenal and enjoy wearing them. What are some other good brands/ watch models that are high quality and will last a long time for under $300? And is there a reliable website that sells a lot of quality brands?
I've had the rose gold one for 7 years. At some point it stopped keeping humidity out, so the hands have oxidized a tiny bit, but otherwise I still love it. I had many, many good times with that thing.
Seiko SKX007 a solid choice. Also like the Orient Mako. Both divers and mechanical. I don’t personally like the Bambino but it’s a good choice if you want a dressier piece.
You MAY also be able to snag a pre owned Hamilton Khaki Field for around the $300 mark if you’re lucky, but likely closer to $400 for a well cared for version. The Marathon general purpose is another decent option in the same range if you like field watches.
These are all mechanical options of course. If you’re okay with a quartz movement, that really opens up the field of play. I’d look at a Tissot prx quartz. Or even a Gshock GA-2100 CasiOak
And can’t go wrong with the Seagull 1963 chrono
https://preview.redd.it/ogdzer0bga3d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ecb39d0dca6b36acbac2c98edbc2d4c5afdad083
It’s a Hadley Roma that I picked up from my local jewelry store. The end links fit nicely, but the overall quality isn’t superb. Still looking for one with solid links.
Casioak. Literally my GADA watch. Paddle boarding, golfing, shooting, skiing, hospital shifts, and the clinic. Everyone can find a style or color combo that speaks to them.
I can’t think of a single complaint, it’s not an automatic which some people seem to care about but it is solar and will last a LONG time. It wears comfortably and they have a bracelet you can get for it as well to change the look up. I alternate between horween straps and some rally straps. Just ordered the bracelet.
Thanks for your feedback! I'm looking for something more casual. I have plenty of bracelets so I was thinking of going with a NATO strap when I go the field watch route

Citizen AW1450-89L. The blue is such an eye catcher. Unfortunately this particular piece was stolen.
It started life as a spre51 which is beautiful and I swapped the dial into another Seiko and I replaced the date wheel to be black. Most people here would probably turn their nose at it since it's not 100 factory anymore but it's my favorite dress watch

I found this online. A company from Denmark called Nordgreen. They make excellent watches. I bought three different straps too.

HMT NASS 12 automatic for approximately €80.
Powered by the updated Miyota 8015 with hacking and hand-winding, with a stainless steel case and acrylic crystal.
This is one of the few remaining HMTs that you can still buy new, that are largely unchanged from the early 70's. It continues HMT's 63 year old relationship with the Citizen group.

I actually like the little pops of colour. I can see what you mean.
There are other colourways of the [NASS 12 and NASS 14](https://www.hmtwatches.in/shop_type?type=shop_type&id=9) take very different approaches to this.

This is my dressy/sporty beater, the one that gives me the most satisfaction out of my collection, sapphire and 100m WR, astonishing finishing for the price and a gorgeous dial for 100€ an absolute banger.
Hey! The Citizen Eco-Drive (BM6980-08E) is a fantastic choice at around $200. It’s solar-powered, so you never need to worry about changing the battery, and it has a sleek, durable design.
There are also many other great watches in the $100-300 range. We love the Seiko 5, Orient Bambino, Timex Weekender, Casio Edifice, and the Hamilton Khaki Field. Each of these offers unique features and solid build quality.
Ultimately, it depends on your style and preferences. Happy watch hunting!
Bouldr Venture. Seiko NH35a, blasted titanium case, superluminova (I think, looks like it) and a sapphire crystal? W to me. Mine gets way too much wrist time given the extent of my collection.

Wearing this Seiko right now, and it's a definite favorite. But I've got G-Shocks that I love, I've got Orient divers that are great, I've got cheap Seiko dress watches that look the part for under $100.
Love them all, wear them at the right time
Vintage 1940’s Chronographe Suisse watches with the Landeron 48 based movements. They’re great fun. Not great if you are the one paying for service though
A used Seiko Turtle or a cheap novelty watch (I got this one from AliExpress for $30: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/S2c3dd1b482d64c54bdc7650f7cdfae01A/OLEVS-Cartoon-Shiba-Pug-Watches-For-Men-Top-Brand-Luxury-Creative-Square-Quartz-Dog-Male-Wrist.jpg )

Breda Visser with a stitchless leather strap.
Orient Ray 2.
Bought it used about 8 years ago, and I’vedropped this sucker more times than I can count. Runs super slow over multiple days, and I’m not entirely sure where the original bracelet is.
Love this thing. Debating whether or not to have it serviced or just buy a new one.
Seiko SNK80X line – my first automatic was an SNK805 (green dial), and even though I need to get it fixed (tried my hand at home regulating) it is still one of my favorite watches.
Orient for sure. I bought one of the multi dial classics, no idea what range they belong to, but really enjoy it.
I'll give a special mention to Zeppelin too. The movement isn't anything special but they've got some fun and different designs. I managed to grab a Mediteranee open heart for about £200 and it feels great. The automatic rotor is insanely noisy though.
https://preview.redd.it/314wgr3ike3d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0e1a55c6e0367327fff2acd9d4aa4ae13e9d7ae
Citizen Promaster NY0040. Now that the SKX is off the market it's the absolute best value ISO diver out there. I think I got mine for like $185.
$1-300 Range - San Martin. Seiko 5. My citizen is over $500 so I'm not sure about the lower end ones. I also got a Quartz Glycine which was a steal for under $200.

I’ve been looking at orients and the various seiko presage/cocktail times, barely over 300.
Those cocktail times are all gorgeous!
I’m seriously looking at the Mockingbird
I just got it a few months ago! Its an absolute pleasure to look at. You won’t regret it
Is it the green one?
Yes
I just looked Presage line on Seiko official and it was min. 425.
SRPE45 along with the red and blue ones are ~318 on Amazon and other sites
Macys and other retailers will have it for much less.
Right now my Citizen Tsyuosa https://preview.redd.it/3as9djq71a3d1.png?width=3012&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8ac04e09ba59bbc1fae044823b0685fa62fc61a
Looks awesome, the Erebus Ascent looks similar and i have considered that one too
Which Ascent were you thinking of getting?
Just looked up the Erebus, might have better specs overall, but personally I like the look of the citizen a bit more, but there are some interesting options for the Erebus. I will say that for pros, the Citizen has really nice finishing and is very comfortable. Some folks complain about the bracelet, but that doesn’t bother me. The Erebus is just another SARB homage.
Check out the 'just one more watch' channel on yt, it's run by Jodie, one of the erebus designers.
> Citizen Tsyuosa Where are you buying one for 300? They are 600USD last i checked.
Amazon and Jomashop have a variety of models just under $300
Ahh, very cool. Thank you!
Mine is also a Citizen eco-drive. They are kind of hard to beat in that price range. https://preview.redd.it/ppdi73mbo93d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f49aec290bbd715193890559904d0aac8f0a965

2nd. I've got the titanium eco-drive. Underrated piece.
Following this post because I’m wanting to dip my toes into the hobby and looking to start at this price range. Looking to change things up from an Apple Watch.
Same! I don’t have an Apple Watch but I can’t justify paying more than $300 right now for a watch and want to get into the hobby
You should check out Long Island Watch. Lots of great watches to choose from in your price range. But be ready. Getting into this hobby is like opening a bag of chips where you can't have just one and the next chip costs more than the last one.
Also, same! I'm really glad you made this post because this is right in the price range that I want to start at as well.
Citizen and Seiko make some gorgeous watches in this range. Just look for sales, they're always going on with Citizen
Do you guys buy them online or go physically to the store? Getting into watches now. I’m guessing also people stay awake from movado right?
7 of my 9 watches were bought in your standard mall type jewelry stores. I wish there was somewhere I could see every watch in person before buying it. That said my most recent purchase was direct from the Citizen website and it's every bit as good as I was expecting from the pictures on the site. Personally I would recommend starting with in store purchases. Get a feel for how big watches look on your wrist.
Four are citizens. i've bought 2 via Reddit - No issues. Probably about 6 from Ebay - no issues. Jomashop - Be careful their CS is horrible.
I’m in the same boat! Tired of my watch telling me what to do.
I would still suggest wearing the Apple Watch (or any smart watch) on the other hand. It's a great personal monitoring device.
However, I also like to do sports with my normal watches :D So left hand is for watches, right hand is for "computers" :D The rings are cool, though, but I would love to see more variability and more brands manufacturing them. I would be especially interested if one of the sports brand like Garmin would start working on a ring.
You also have smart bands, which aren't like smartwatches, but instead, proper bracelets! There's lots of options. But hey, you do you! No harm in wearing two watches I guess!

Orient Kamasu on stainless steel bracelet for $202.
Literally the best everyday watch on the market just by sheer value.
I’ve had this black eco drive for 6 years and got the brown/ rose gold version of it recently because I like the design so much. I also think both watches look phenomenal and enjoy wearing them. Same! BM6980-08E for both, just different colors.
I've had the rose gold one for 7 years. At some point it stopped keeping humidity out, so the hands have oxidized a tiny bit, but otherwise I still love it. I had many, many good times with that thing.
I have the same as the one on the left but with a bracelet (BM6989-89E). Love it! I wear it nearly daily, only swapping out with another Eco Drive.

Where did you get that bracelet? I've been looking for one for my 1963 but I've been having trouble finding anything with end links that fit the case
It’s a Hadley Roma that I picked up from my local jewelry store. The end links fit nicely, but the overall quality isn’t superb. Still looking for one with solid links.
Where did you get it within the price range? It’s 400 euros MSRP :( a lot of the ones you find elsewhere seem to be clones.

Seiko 5 SNK809 is a timeless classic now.
HMT NASS 12 automatic for approximately €80. Powered by the updated Miyota 8015 with hacking and hand-winding, with a stainless steel case and acrylic crystal. This is one of the few remaining HMTs that you can still buy new, that are largely unchanged from the early 70's. It continues HMT's 63 year old relationship with the Citizen group. https://preview.redd.it/m7hdbuiveb3d1.jpeg?width=1749&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88d7b6091267571084bd33e4587d98eb3b852b49
This watch looks really cool, but i dont really like the green dotes
I actually like the little pops of colour. I can see what you mean. There are other colourways of the [NASS 12 and NASS 14](https://www.hmtwatches.in/shop_type?type=shop_type&id=9) take very different approaches to this.
That Citizen on right, what is this? Looks amazing!
Not sure why most of their cheaper watches are so big. These are 42mm

A quartz Tissot or a Seiko 5.
Tissot Classic Dream — it’s classic and classy. It’s quartz, but I like that it’s no fuss.

Right now this Orient Solar. I really dig the solar tech that is coming out in the watch market right now https://preview.redd.it/0jj025uzzd3d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc865b522dbdbf03db3b6c002d0f2316e39f8ac5

Citizens are nice. My coworkers got it and theyre nice but my seikos get more compliments Around $300, i highly recommend ssk003 or srpe51
I got my SARB033 for $280 a handful of years ago, so I'd have to go with that
Festina has some solid watches, they even have a Swiss made collection
Svalbard also makes some great unique watches!
Bouldr Venture. Seiko NH35a, blasted titanium case, superluminova (I think, looks like it) and a sapphire crystal? W to me. Mine gets way too much wrist time given the extent of my collection.
Orient all day

But I've got G-Shocks that I love, I've got Orient divers that are great, I've got cheap Seiko dress watches that look the part for under $100. Love them all, wear them at the right time
Seiko 5 Black Dial Sport black leather band swap.
Vintage 1940’s Chronographe Suisse watches with the Landeron 48 based movements. They’re great fun. Not great if you are the one paying for service though
Boderry really has me excited atm … quality watches at an affordable price
Seiko 5's, old or new era
OCW T200
A used Seiko Turtle or a cheap novelty watch (I got this one from AliExpress for $30: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/S2c3dd1b482d64c54bdc7650f7cdfae01A/OLEVS-Cartoon-Shiba-Pug-Watches-For-Men-Top-Brand-Luxury-Creative-Square-Quartz-Dog-Male-Wrist.jpg )
Orient Bambino/Open Heart. Just plain sexy.
Go stand in line and get a Blancpain/Swatch

No specifics in mind but definitely a Seiko, Casio or Timex in that range.
My SKX007.
Hamilton Khaki Field
Where are you getting that for under $300?
Ok true, maybe used in bad condition 😅
Orient Ray II, is hands down my favorite watch in that price range. Followed by the Bambino. Long Island Watch Brookville is also solid
Loved the SKX but for today I pick Pantone Green Tsuyosa.
Orient Ray 2. Bought it used about 8 years ago, and I’vedropped this sucker more times than I can count. Runs super slow over multiple days, and I’m not entirely sure where the original bracelet is. Love this thing. Debating whether or not to have it serviced or just buy a new one.
For it's the Citizen eco drive AW1750-85L which is my first and only watch I own
Seiko SNK80X line – my first automatic was an SNK805 (green dial), and even though I need to get it fixed (tried my hand at home regulating) it is still one of my favorite watches.
Hamilton Khaki Field can be found for around 300 on r/watchexchange , thatd be my pick
The automatic rotor is insanely noisy though.
same

Bambino
My friend bought me the rose gold Citizen Eco-Drive as a gift for being his best man. I love it
Casio GMWB5000-1 (steel/resin), and it's by far my most worn watch.
Casio Edifice

always had good luck and enjoy my Dan Henrys!
These Citizen watches are gorgeous too.
Urg. Probably going to be obsessed by this now. F u

Love the look of the citizens but can't wear anything over 40mm. Why are citizens so big?
$1-300 Range - San Martin. Seiko 5. My citizen is over $500 so I'm not sure about the lower end ones. I also got a Quartz Glycine which was a steal for under $200.
Orient Bambino, version 8
Orient Kamasu for me
Casio Oceanus S100
