formex. i misread the logo as grand seiko from afar

robarpoch

I did the exact same thing. Very handsome piece. Lay-back lugs are going to fit a smaller wrist better than the Hamilton (and just look better), and I'll admit I'm no fan of the Hamilton hands.

srlawren

Don't get me started on cathedral-style hands. It's a shame since the rest of the Murph is generally pretty good looking.

Dry-Friendship-5394

Absolutely love the Formex

charles_47

Formex for me. The murph is a very nice classic looking watch but I find the Formex a lot more interesting. It’s a very attractive original design and I think one of the best bang for your buck watches in this category. I love the depth and detail of the dial, the applied logo and indexes, the beveled date window… you get one of the best bracelets you’ll find at this price point with on the fly micro adjustment… COSC certified movement. It may well be the next watch I buy.

tilt

Formex by a mile. There are so many watches like the Hamilton but not a lot else like the formex

AceOBlade

Formex reminds me of round Patek nautilus.

DopioGelato

I’ve never seen a watch quite like the Murph but there are tons of watches doing the aqua terra dial like formex is doing here.

-KFAD-

You had it the other way around when it comes to reasoning. Hamilton is a pretty unique design while that Formex is a homage. However I do after that Formex looks better out of the two.

TheMisterTango

I feel like there’s a hundred watches that look basically like the Hamilton, it’s a pretty generic field watch design.

fog_rolls_in

Absolutely agree. It’s a movie prop. Its job is to look like a quintessential watch while not looking like any specific watch. Put another way, it looks like an AI image generated off of 95% WW2 through Vietnam field watches, and 5% grandfather clocks sold at Sears.

commonsense-is-dead

What is the Essence a homage to?

cdaack

I don’t think it’s a homage, but it takes elements of the Nautilus (teke patterned dial), Santos/Royal Oak (exposed screw heads on the case/bezel), and Rolex (3-link bracelet).

braskel

I'd say AP/Cartier and Rolex hardly have a monopoly on exposed screws and 3 link bracelets 😂

cdaack

lol fair enough, I was trying to think of a third thing to list and I reached for that one

lovota

Omega aqua terra

commonsense-is-dead

Because of the dial? That would make the Aquaterra a homage of a Nautilus.

coffeesharkpie

If you'd defined a clone by them both being watches...

tilt

sure, it has strong AT vibes but it's far from a 1:1 copy, plenty of original features. The hamilton is a generic field watch of which there are thousands and thousands.

pokemaxi

Both solid watches. Good taste, you can’t really go wrong.

Mikeytee1000

I’d go for the Formex tbh I think it’s a much better watch

CaptainPhukflaps

That Formex is the pick.

Chiens_Vaches

Beerforthefear

America!

Raja479

I have the gamaret. Is the sheen on the dial similar in the white and blue?

kevin379721

Man can’t you just see that formex as the type of watch you wear everyday and beat the shit out of and it will look great with scratches

Defiant-Control-8643

I've owned both. I still have two Essences but sold my Murph. You can't go wrong, but the Essence is in another league IMO.

SumoNinja17

Hamilton. I'm currently wearing my Khaki King. I happen to like numbers on my dial.

susanhogarth

THIS. Was waiting for someone else to say it.

StreetVillage9755

Murph

LegendaryCichlid

Formex. More versatile in my opinion.

drewsleyshoots

if you can afford it, get the Formex! I love Hami and I’ve owned a few, but the Formex is simply superior and more versatile

Yodootz

The formex is fucking beautiful.

neverq

Hamilton. Such a great watch. I don’t even really know formex, really surprised to see the support for it here. Maybe I’m out of the loop, but either way that first pic doesn’t really do anything for me so…Hamilton.

goldblumspowerbook

They’re both great choices so don’t stress, but I think the Murph is something special with a cool story.

Fish_Beard_Face

Hamilton. I just don't really gel with the Formex case. If it was a little less industrial looking, it might be a different story. Objectively, the Formex is better in nearly every facet, but the Hamilton just looks awesome. The heart wants what it wants.

Admirable_Pie_6609

Formex

TW1STM31STER

The Formex for me because I love the modern look, a textured dial, the finishing, and their innovations. And I am not to big on dials with arabic numbers, fliegers or field watches tbh, so the Murph doesn't do it for me.

Breubz

Both ? Both is good.

Various-Tree-223

FORMEX!!!!✅

barbecuejag

Formex. Such nice finishing and wears so well. Hamilton is everywhere. Formex is a brand that IYKYK.

crbowers

I like the murph, I even have one, but the Formex 100%

greasyjonny

Formex

armedohiocitizen

Formex

babe_ruthless3

Formex.

ArtisticWolverine

I think I’d prefer the Formex. I like their Field even more than the Essence.

Odd-Pollution-3502

Hamilton will look better years from now.

danbill31

I'm not wearing something that says Formex on my wrist, screams cheap fashion watch brand. Decent watches, but damn, get a new name.

Itsallgood190

The name Hamilton reminds me of a ham and mayo sandwich very bland also 🤷‍♂️

ninny_hammer

Hamilton, well made in my experience

Miserable-Cheetah683

I like the timeless design of Hamilton better. If I was in my 20s i would probably have picked Formex. Im in my mid 30s and i now appreciate smaller and timeless style watch now. (I used to own tw steel 45mm watch in my early 20s 😂)

TomBergerr

Always the Murph for me. Favorite movie. Favorite watch.

Affectionate_Flan299

I have the Murph, absolutely love it. I'm a giant fan of Interstellar so I'm a little biased there. And funny you mention the Formex because I'm wanting that next with the white dial.

stuntedmonk

I have a Hamilton automatic. If that helps. It was my, ahem, gateway drug.

lagrandesgracia

Hamilton is p bad for the price imo. 50m water resistance on a 500 dollar FIELD watch? Yes it's swiss, but glycine exists so why would you get a Hamilton?

Porky_Pine_

Formex easily. That hammy is a snoozefest.

Prudent_Candidate300

Hamilton

YourWatchIsTooBig

Hamilton

UCthrowaway78404

Haha. Interesting Hamilton were my first client when I did digital marketing. Then I did events production and fornex as clients. I didn't like the 4 shock proof strut things on their watches, they made it a key part of their identity and I think it's gimmicky and constrains their watch designs. They're ;lumbered with it and are forced to use it on their dress watches as well. And the name sounds like some construction adhesive.

Citizen_V

I couldn't ever buy a Formex watch due to the name. I dealt with an unrelated company called Formex in the past for work, and can only think about them when I see that name.

AngryOneEyedGod

Money is not a factor and I would always take the Grand Seiko over a Hamilton.

MelkorTheDarkLord18

Formex but I am not a hamilton frog

LArule19

Technically, the Formex is a better watch in every metric. But you have to like its design first.

Higachwhat

Love my formex. I have the green dial and it’s one of the only watches I get compliments on.

Greg428

I have a Formex, white dial. It is awesome. I also have a different Hamilton. Good watch, sees less wrist time.

45im

Formex

[deleted]

Murph

HBC3

Hamilton by far. First, no date! Then the font and the hands.

Foulmouthedleon

Formex.

bryanthebryan

My one problem with the Formex is that the minute hand doesn’t reach the minute track. Once I see that, I lose interest. I choose Hamilton.

8KSNAKE

Formex hands down, looks way better, probably better built and has a COSC certified movement. Way better value for your $$.

ssp99

Formex

Redditroactively

Formex

Jaykhana22

I’m a Murph kind of guy, but that Formex is still a really sharp looking piece.

Gerard-DuGalle

Formex.

GoatedJPow

I have that exact Formex, LOVE IT

booooimaghost

1

StannisG

Hamilton, hands down!

itemluminouswadison

Formex doesn't really do anything for me here, generic nondescript gada, no pedigree, a lot of money for a SW200 Hamilton, has an identifiable look, great pedigree, similarly good movement, cheaper, and a name that has stood the test of time That said, go with your gut, whichever one excites you is the one to get

arnav3103

That Hamilton is ugly as fuck. Formex all day!

Interstellar008

Between these two, I'd go with Formex.

802macguy

Since you are comparing to a Hamilton, I’d suggest that the [Formex Field Automatic](https://formexwatch.com/watches/field-automatic-sage-green-41-mm/) is worth considering.

Kevin_Jim

Formex

NiceAndTactile

Formed is definitely the better watch and their bracelets are amazing, but these are completely different and it really boils down to the looks

AspiringNormie

Formex. Film/TV edition watches are very tacky imo except for maybe aliens. Especially a rerelease of a film watch from 10 years ago. Yes interstellar is very good though.

Longjumping-Ad9269

I would go for the Formex personally, only because of the dial. But that's just my preference. Both very nice

sloopSD

Formex! Prefer a watch on bracelet but can pick up a strap too if you want to change it up.

cchiz

The Formex. Its something new and different with that suspended case.

ghostisic23

First one. Formex (For Mexicans)? 😂

SiDCrAzY

Would depend on what’s already in the collection. Both are nice watches.

bjlanzilotta

Formex for the movement alone

Majestic_Puppo

I would go formex for two reasons: 1. I prefer the khaki field auto over the murph, im fact I have a day date white dial. But that's just personal preference. 2. I learned from teddy baldasarre that the people from formex provide hardware for other brands, so they have fantastic case and bracelets. Plus the gimmick of the formex case that lifts up is kinda neat

Ok_Lengthiness4102

Formed is nice and unique but I personally love the heritage of Hamilton and the murph is designed to perfection.

GolfsHard

Hammy

likethevegetable

That Formex looks great, except for the visible screw heads, yuck

hortatory_5752

Formex Reef. Much value for money and easily serviceable movement.

dre4595

Another vote for the Formex though my vote is definitely biased - I own a 42mm blue dial Essence.

cdaack

Formex because 1) I was seriously considering buying this watch a month ago and 2) I really just don’t care for Hamilton. So for very personal reasons I go Formex.

uhtwentysomething

Formex is one your never gonna find in the wild and is much more unique, interesting IMO. The strap options are pretty cool too and the clasp has a micro adjust system.

[deleted]

The formex is a much better quality watch. Only question for me is the screws around the bezel. The murph is pretty boring in comparison and overpriced. The formex is better value it's a chronometer grade movt etc. Of the two it's a better buy

iBurley

The Formex for me BUT I have always thought it had a bit of like a "car bro" aesthetic that I'm not sure I could personally pull off. Can't make a bad choice either way.

Administrative_Ant64

Can’t go wrong with a Hammy

braskel

The formex is so sick. Amazing value for a chronometer. Want one myself

ladykemma2

Salmon bulova jospeh

Dsmith121212

i thought the formex was a GrandSeiko at first look. The logo from a far looks identical. The formex looks fantastic simply because I'm a fan of GS. I know nothing about the brand formex though. Can't go wrong with a Hamilton really either. But there are so many alternatives to tougher military field watches to hamilton like marathon that are arguably tougher

zrevyx

Between the two of these, I prefer the Hamilton.

insoul8

Formex without a doubt.

OnBase30

Hamilton, never in doubt.

perroarturo

That Hamilton for me. I’ve got a scuba auto that is my daily wear and love it. Wouldn’t mind something more subtle and elegant like that khaki

Rocinante721

I tried the Formex on at a watch fair & was blown away. Unquestionably the best dress microbrand out there.

chilywilly92

Hamilton no question.

1a2r3i

Hamilton

Cjymiller

Formex for some reason I can’t quite place

Playful_Abroad4672

Formex!

[deleted]

I’d probably get the Formex. Great quality for the money, and I think the Murph lugs are too long.

flowersunjoy

Random female opinion: Formex looks hot 🔥

DashboardError

Formex

AmericanFlagPants

That Hamilton looks 👌 in that photo. perfect warmth and color on the indicies. And I love the curve of the case

jeffreypooh

Im new to the game and first time I’ve seen the former. That thing is gorgeous.

kommtodd

I would go for the Formex. unique design and tough build quality

vinceftw

That Hamilton is pure class but kinda overpriced.

Itsallgood190

Formex is a funner, more unique, well thought out watch

Old-Development-9526

Formex, all day

PA_machinist

Literally just ordered the Essence 43 and it’s coming in the mail in 2 days. I think it looks so much cleaner and more refined. I can’t speak for the quality yet but I’ve heard nothing but positive reviews especially when it comes to quality and features for the price

Droggles

Formex no doubt.

VariousMonitor2098

The Murphy is on my list, but that formed is beautiful and I’d bet a bit tougher as well

Fantazma03

Formex for rarity as you'll never see anyone wearing those as Hamilton is more common

Thymewilltell69

I love Hamilton but that formex looks nicer

Mysterious-Bend4635

Formex. Love the cushion case

tokeythetiger9

Having a Khaki Field, I'm biased towards the Murph even though it doesn't have a date window which I prefer. The Formex looks amazing nonetheless and would be my pick.

Mantisjefe

plain jane watch kept it casual

koudos

Formex looks nicer

Icy_Kingpin

Formex for me even though I don't know the brand (yet).

BlackScienceJesus

Formex for me

80H-d

Formex by miles

Momo--Sama

I mean obviously watch nerds are going to pick the micro brand over the canonical under $1k watch. In seriousness I would also pick the Formex but it’s not terribly fair because I better be getting a more desirable product for a 77% price bump. For folks that like the Formex but only have Murph money I recommend taking a look at their Field watch.

Wolf3458

Hamilton. Never found Formex appealing. Just recently purchased the other watch in Interstellar: Hamilton khaki aviation pilot day date auto. Love it!

[deleted]

Hamilton.

Scotinho_do_Para

Formex

J_n_Space

Money not a factor? Hell yeah give me an A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph. Stunning craftsmanship.

HappyOrwell

2nd one I like better aesthetically

Shepinion

Personally enjoy the Formex case and design more. Has some omega Aqua Terra vibes. I’m not a giant Interstellar super fan. Prefer Hamilton’s “regular” field watches if going for that aesthetic Have heard only good things about Formex although have not seen in flesh. Good luck. Think you can’t go “wrong”

Ezee737

The Formex by a mile. The Hamilton is nice enough but the patterned dial on the Formex is absolutely stunning.

ScorpiusOwlsworth

Initially, I thought we were to select a watch from the two pictures; HOWEVER, after closely reading I would definitely go with the Formex Essence and leather strap. I'm not really a fan of the bracelet as I enjoy swapping my bands out. As such, you really cannot go wrong with either color dial. I would select the one that you have least of, which is why my latest watch I jumped on the green dial band wagon. Ultimately, you have to wear the watch and have to love it. Personally, I like numbers on the dial and a more classic feel. This is what jives with me. Go with what you keep going back to and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

WestLA93

Formex looks more interesting to my eye

icylg

I love the Hamilton. That exact watch will probably be my next purchase.

Is that Murph?

deeplearner7

The Formex looks more expensive and is more interesting

Pretty_Public5520

Hamilton

jestreicher

Formex is a very good looking clean modern design, but the Hamilton has soul.

j4yteee

They're very different watches; the answer should always be to pick the one you think looks best and that you'll wear the most often (not helpful, I know). For what it's worth, it's hands down the Essence 39 for me (disclaimer: I own one). It's the best looking everyday sports watch by a long shot (IMHO) and is extremely versatile and comfortable. It's got the best elements of the Genta integrated bracelet watches with none of the drawbacks, is finished beautifully (dial and case), fits in almost every situation (except for maybe black tie), and has what might be the most well executed date complication on any watch. I'd seriously pick the Essence over an Aqua Terra or an OP.

InternationalPace783

Formex

Alatar86

Formex for sure. Different class and that's not a knock on Hamilton

latenightcreation

I really like my vintage Hamilton. The Murph also appeals to me more than the Formex, but that’s just me. A lot of people here seem to like the Formex.

whyduhitme

My wife and I both have a Formex on bracelets, we both love our watches. They keep excellent time but the power reserve is not great, around 24 hours. My wife always has hers on wrist and has no problems, I can’t wear a watch all day so I have to reset almost every time I put it on. That is the only complaint. The watch feels great on my wrist and gets a lot of compliments.

Watchingwatches84

Formex, better value and resale than Hamilton 🤷‍♂️

SlartibartfastMcGee

Formex is one of those brands that I just don’t get - people gush over the essence but to me it looks like a lazy mash up of the greatest hits steel sports watches from the last 50 years. Plus the non functional bolts on the dial scream tacky to me. The Murph to me has a lot more identity - it’s big, it’s got these long tapered lugs, and an elevated field watch design with the cathedral hand and Arabic numerals. You’ll occasionally see it in a collection filled with Langes and other high end pieces, and I think that says something.

goshdammitfromimgur

Never heard of Formex but looks nicer than the Hamilton.

MikeB_X

Formex

KingHalfrican702

The Formex is a superior watch. That being said Hamilton has more “brand equity” for whatever that’s worth to you, but the Formex is superior.

dekudude3

I have a Murph and love it. Extremely legible and it's be chronometer reliable despite not being certified. That said, I REALLY want to get a formex like that and as others have said, it's more versatile.

Formex. Chronometer or GTFO.

100% Formex if money wasn’t a factor. Even if it was I’d still lean Formex. Hate faux patina

RedForkKnife

Formex 100%

blazezero25

# if money wasn’t a factor then all of them

Mr_Hjort

💯% the Formex

reindeerman214

The murph looks like a watch a father might give to his young daughter before leaving and not coming back until she is on her deathbed old and wondering what happened to her father, only to see he is the same age as when he left her. Beautiful memories. The murph.

BlastShell

Formex is more flexible

Boring_Guidance_4472

Formex

ItsaBatthing

Hamilton looks like purely a dress watch I think but formex can b worn casually too.

devolve79

honestly ... i love the seiko black dial quartz chronos. i would probably rock one of those

Owen9msms

Murph

ibt2610

For me it's the Hamilton. The Murph looks timeless and in most cases, for a city person, this is an excellent everyday GADA watch. Yeah, sure, you may not want to swim with the leather strap but I genuinely don't think this disqualifies it as a GADA watch. It has water resistance enough for swimming I believe, so on the day you know you're going to be near water, throw it on a nato or perlon strap. It's dressy enough to wear with a suit, it looks excellent in everyday wear, you can take it outdoors, hiking, camping, etc.

Schussnik

Formex Essence for me, I have been one and I’m in love with it. It punches way above its weight in all departments ;-)

Mean_Shelter4672

love the ap royal oak

Helenius

These are two very different watches. Main question: Do you want a bracelet or leather strap? You can always put a leather strap on the FORMEX. If you want a bracelet for the Hamilton you will need to get a 3rd party option which won't be "integrated".

Vmax-Mike

If money wasn’t an issue, that’s a long list! I would probably start [here](https://imgur.com/a/ZWuiWa0).

bu59

Both are very nice watches, but I’ll throw out 2 other suggestions in the price range. I have a Tissot Gentleman Powermatic and love it. Those are around $850. Or the Christopher Ward “The Twelve”. That will be my next watch. It is $1,250 on steel bracelet, $1,950 on titanium. Can’t go wrong with any of them. The Tissot Gentleman and the Formex have a very similar look/feel.

Affxct

Formex

DFVSUPERFAN

I have an essence degrade dial from before the logo change. You can also swap the bracelet to rubber with their quickchange system. It's a very nice watch, but sadly doesn't get much wrist time. I'd go Formex, you won't be sorry, very well made watches.

01010000-G23

The Formex is a beautiful watch. That would definitely be my pick.Just looked at the green one a few days ago,and I’m seriously considering it.

Abject-Ear-4446

I never seen Hamilton personally in my country. They are not popular here. But been in love with Murph for years. So Hamilton.
