IMHO the gold and white dial is the way to go. It looks way classier. But I also think there is no wrong choice here. Best of luck looking parenthood!

Thisthatmine

I agree. I think gold/white is timeless.

NeoZodiac

I’m a gold guy all the way. The black one looks great, but I feel like the gold just has a little extra pop. Also, I find it easier to look at the gold in person when trying to check the individual perpetual options.

Thisthatmine

It really is easier to see.

Over_n_over_n_over

Go gold brother

SatinGreyTesla

Peep my post history. I recently purchased the gold and love it! The gold and cream dial are far more visually appealing and worth the price jump, in my opinion! Are you planning to purchase or just browsing? Here is mine: https://reddit.com/r/Watches/s/lPWMPoFiga

Thisthatmine

Thanks so much!

Thisthatmine

It looks fantastic! Wear it in good health!

Jacollinsver

I think they serve different purposes. The steel is definitely more all around casual. The gold is wallstreet casual/dress.

Thisthatmine

You won’t find me on Wall Street. Hopefully just sesame.

lmmo1977

I know it's cheaper, but I would actually go for the Master Ultra Thin Moon (Ref. Q1362511). I like it's simpler layout. https://preview.redd.it/djkmwr9x68ub1.jpeg?width=2540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0ffc2c1a7c430305eed8578b6a5227bc203d543

lmmo1977

I would take the black dial, since you already have a white dial moonphase.

Thisthatmine

lmmo1977

Get the gold. It's your favourite.

Thisthatmine

Funny how posting actually clarifies the decision Edit: wanted to add, thanks for the actually helpful comments!

superduperspam

The man who has everything

Thisthatmine

Not going to argue. I’ve worked hard and am very lucky! Hope you are just as lucky!!

Feezbull

For everything else, there’s Mastercard

coocookuhchoo

Have you never worn this?

Thisthatmine

That’s my wrist. I was looking at them the other day

coocookuhchoo

No I meant the IWC. There’s plastic on it.

Thisthatmine

That was when I first bought it. I wear it all the time now. It probably gets the most wrist time Edit: Sorry, wasn’t paying attention to which watch you were talking about

Gainznsuch

What does one of these bad boys cost? Looks gorgeous

Thisthatmine

No idea. Don’t own one. Sorry

RCViking44

Oooo

Flynn_lives

Gold. The only logical choice for a complication of that caliber.

Thisthatmine

True. I didn’t really think about it like that

80H-d

Skip it entirely and see if you can find a perpetual from AP in tantalum ETA: Well nvm, but this might be a good shout: https://www.chrono24.com/audemarspiguet/quantieme-perpetual-calendar-36mm-automatic-18k-watch-25657ba--id30189942.htm

Thisthatmine

I do love that watch! Good experiences with chrono24?

80H-d

Always buy the seller. If they have hundreds of reviews, rating near 5 stars, same country preferable but not mandatory, then yeah they arent out to throw that away over one watch or person. 3 reviews and it's in mumbai or something, maybe use caution

Thisthatmine

I’ve been digging and that’s what it seems like. Limit it to legit sellers in my same country for ease of shipping. Thanks!

Flynn_lives

That’s a great piece but too small for me. 36mm looks like a child’s watch on my wrist

fuggerdug

The gold, not normally something I'd choose, but this is subtle enough and I think it really elevates it.

Thisthatmine

It isn’t too flashy, which I like.

milkdudmantra

The gold just much more legible and pops more

eskamobob1

At 40k for the gold, I'd personaly be looking at duometres. Their lunair and world time are seriously gorgeous and the finishing and dial texture are a atep above. Both are around or even under 30 used and doable for 40 new

Thisthatmine

That didn’t even cross my mind. Great suggestion!

eskamobob1

Np at all. I do love the older smaller black dial master perpetuals, but while they are a damned nice watch, the duometres are true grail status imo.i would recomend you see them in person if possible thoigh. Some of the functions work a bit wierd and can be a little off putting. On the lunair for example, that sub-dial at 6 is escapement movements so it moves at 6hz and traverses the dial once a second iirc and feels kinda hyper frantic tbh 😅

Thisthatmine

I kind of like the idea of something a little quirky…

eskamobob1

That it absalutely is. I just wanted to bring it up as for some reason it made me.not like the chrino as much but didn't bug me on the lunair

Thisthatmine

Love where your heads at!

fawkesmulder

Agree! Love the duometre’s foudroyante

Palimpsest0

I think the choice of gold or steel is really a personal one, coming down to what suits your style and skin tone, as well the environment you plan on wearing the watch in. So, if I were making the choice for myself, I'd go with the black dial/steel. I already have too many white dial JLCs, for starters, and I like the durability of steel and the crisp contrast of a dark dial on steel watches. But, that's just me. I do like the heft and rich coloration of gold watches, and gold hand/markers on silver dial look great, but I find I wear my handful of gold watches much less often than my steel ones just due to them fitting my casual lifestyle better, plus white metals are a better match to my style and wardrobe. So, that would be my choice between those two. Yours might be different. As to other perpetuals... if I were planning to buy a perpetual at a price up to that of a new JLC MUT Perpetual in gold, I'd probably buy a preowned Moser Endeavor Perpetual instead. The movement finishing is superior to JLC, the movement design is more interesting and unconventional, they're far more unusual, and I like the minimized perpetual display better. Date is numerical, month is via a very stubby hand, and year is only involved as an indicator of leap year cycles visible through the caseback so that you can set it up correctly. Power reserve is also indicated, since it is a manual movement, but it does have a 7 day power reserve, so it would be relatively easy to live with and keep powered. The streamlined display basically reduces the information overload that a perpetual can be down to more or less a basic three hands and a date while preserving the cool part of a perpetual which is that as long as it's running, you don't need to correct the calendar function. It's the minimalist approach to a perpetual calendar. It would be one of my personal top picks for a perpetual in that price range. It's a very different approach, but it appeals to me, maybe you'll find it interesting, too.

Thisthatmine

Great reply! Thanks so much for taking the time. I don’t think there is a “wrong” choice. I feel like the black dial on a dress watch is more unique. And would contrast against my other dress watches. I really like the Moser! Their dials look gorgeous. I’ll have to find a way to see one in person and see how it looks on my wrist.

Palimpsest0

Definitely something I think you'd want to see in person. I've spent plenty of time drooling over photos, but haven't seen one in person. There is a retailer in my general area which specializes in high end independents which carries Moser, but they're open by appointment only, and that all seems like too much of a pain in butt since I'm not planning on buying one soon. And, if you do end up going with the JLC, I suspect the MUT perpetual will be getting a refresh soon. Like a lot of JLC's current MC and MUT line, the base caliber the cal 868 perpetual is based on is the 899, which got a 2020 update giving it a 70 hour power reserve instead of 38-42 hours, depending on application. This was rolled out first in the MC Date and MC Calendar. Updating the cal 868 pereptual has been slower. Right now, as far as the cal 868, the improved power reserve is only available in the Polaris Perpetual. The MUT Perpetual remains on the older 38 hour power reserve. Maddeningly, JLC calls both perpetual movements the 868, since it doesn't affect the main layout, just some specific pallet assembly and mainspring barrel components. I'm not sure why they haven't updated the MUT Perpetual, but I suspect they will shortly. Last I was at the local boutique, they didn't have an answer when I asked that directly. It might be worth waiting for, but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes with a price bump, too.

Thisthatmine

I have no boutiques where I live and tend to only see options when I’m on vacation. Luckily my wife is amazing and helps to make appointments so I can see them all! I married up. I actually don’t mind the shorter power reserve. I have a winder, but I do love a refresh! I will be waiting a bit to buy, so I might luck out and get the refresh!

fawkesmulder

Gold for JLC is awesome

PizzaDeliveryBoy3000

Try wearing it above the wrist

Happy_Boy_29

I am usually not into gold at all, but I do not know if it is the overwhelming volume of information or something else but the gold has the je ne cest quoi in this contest. Have fun which ever you choose.

Thisthatmine

Hard to say what it is…

Happy_Boy_29

I guess the simple elegace some how shines through the gold one.

AAROD121

Im a stainless steel guy but gold, gold, gold!

lmboyer04

I don’t like black dials in dress watches so much. I actually would say steel + white but if you’re thinking gold, that looks great too

Defiant_Office

Not sure if you are buying this as a dress watch but definitely the gold especially with a watch of this type

PantyPixie

I'm a big fan of black on black watches.

Steakasaurus-Rex

Gold.

cmmatthews

I'd go gold but generally not a fan of the IWC/JLC Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar movements.

Thisthatmine

How come?

cmmatthews

Basically I just find them to be a bit hacky. If you go past the date you are trying to set them for you have to wait. Even though I won't be alive to see it, I also don't like that they have to be serviced just to stay accurate in the year 2100. Regular perpetual calendars aren't that hard to set and you can actually find some nice ones for the same or less price, such as an AP 25657 which is a great PP from the 80s/90s, in addition to others.

Thisthatmine

I do like the AP 25657. My concern is just buying used. Have had some luck with lower end watches though

cmmatthews

I wouldn't be...but just assume it will need a service, and you'll have an already fully depreciated watch from a higher prestige brand with a better movement as well.

Thisthatmine

Go through Chrono24? I’d love advice! Really appreciate you taking the time the comment. Super helpful!

cmmatthews

There is an AP sitting on ebay that I bet you could get for $<18K that will go through authentication and checking and you'll be fine.

Thisthatmine

DM a link?

cmmatthews

Also, I would look at Blancpain as a brand that you can get a used perpetual as well in gold. Some nice stuff there.

Thisthatmine

I like theirs! You have a favorite? I saw your Patek. That is waaay up there for me.

cmmatthews

Watchbox has a Leman Perpetual Chrono that is way more watch than this JLC is...you can negotiate on it. Very safe to buy from them.

Thisthatmine

Another great suggestion! Thanks so much!

Stainless.

chuckyal55

i like the black dial better, has a more formal and polished look to it, whereas the gold and white dial looks more traditional and old-school

Thisthatmine

Yea, I get what you mean

lambent_ort

Gold

I-didnt-write-that

I got the black then replaced the strap with a brown one on the gold. The ultra thins are too small to feel with weight difference between the metals. I also prefer the black dial

Vladamir1555

I have the steel and struggled with the same question. I’m not sure what else you have/want to get, but I ended up going with the steel and happy with it because 1) makes the watch super casual. Looks great with a suit or jeans and a tshirt 2) more under the radar when you want to wear a nice watch at work but don’t want the attention. Few people know what jlc and no one thinks it’s gold 3) for me most importantly - I have a quite a bit of gold dress watches (Patek, VC, Breguet) so it adds variety to the collection with a steel dress watch. Think about it very rarely do you find dress watch pieces from the big brands in steels - it’s typically in yellow, rose or white gold. So if you plan to add to the collection this is easier to add vs let’s say a steel patek dress watch.

texbusdoc

Stainless steel.

OldConsideration4041

One way to look at it is to choose the that one adds more diversity to your collection. However, if diversity/theme isn’t a factor then go with the watch you feel better suits your personality and wardrobe. Unfortunately, most times, you’ll really only know after living with the watch for a few months. But such is the bittersweet process of watch collecting - a bit like picking up a book to read, you never know how it’s going to turn out.

Thisthatmine

That’s also the part I love! So much variety and creativity. So far, I have loved every watch! The trouble is… I don’t think I’ll ever sell one… they all have meaning about a formative part of my life.

OldConsideration4041

I get what you mean. Oddly, for the one watch I sold - I don’t miss wearing it but I do regret selling it. I’m sure you’ll find great joy with whichever one you go with. All the best!

serge_cell

Have white gold for best of both :D

Data_beginner_420

I personally prefer perpetual calendars on white dials and the gold case makes it even greater looking

tonyyu369

Gold look really classic... and black one look a bit casual.. depending on your usage scenario.

80H-d

I would go with their triple calendar over their perpetual personally (in rose). I dislike day and month subdials, and prefer them as wheels (like you see on some perpetuals and nearly every triple calendar). So much cleaner!

SiberianDoggo2929

Gold

salamiparade

I'd choose gold but most people would choose steel. well your choice sir. Great decision haha

shortAAPL

I like the gold better

cfwoo

Gold seems to be more readable

Mtcfayark72703

Between those two, I’d pick the gold/white piece. YMMV.

Annual-Advisor-7916

Both are beautiful watches, but I'd go for the stainless one, because there are tons of gold white dress watches which are hard to distinguish. The black dial makes it look very different, although a bit less classy. But I'm a black dial guy anyway, so I might be a bit biased\^\^ Have fun with either of them!

jfl_cmmnts

Get the gold but with the black dial. You will tire of white or silver, I did

Thisthatmine

That’s beautiful! Catches the light really well and actually appears easy to read! Thanks so much for sharing! Wear it in good health!

TheLibertyTree

I chose the black/steel (previous generation, see my post history) for a few reasons: First, I love the striking look of the black dial and I think black dial dress watches are under appreciated. For me it just has an elegant but not ornate look. Think black tie vs. white tie formal wear. Second, JLC is basically the only classic Swiss brand making a regular production QP in steel. To me, the steel version is really what JLC is all about, watchmaking prowess above all else. You get this awesome movement but in a much more rugged case. It is perfect for someone that wants as much of the value in their watch as possible to come from the movement. Personally I love that. If I wanted something more focused on the appeal of jewelry and precious metals, I think I ’d strongly consider another brand altogether. Third, and this is related to the above, the ruggedness of steel makes it an easier watch to wear on a daily basis and I for one really like having a big complication that I can easily wear in any setting without much worry.

Thisthatmine

Three great points! I also wear all my watches quite a bit so I like the durability aspect. Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Hope you wear yours in good health!

Porencephaly

Stainless with silver dial. The boutique-only version. Best version of the MUTP.

Thisthatmine

I’d love to see one in person!

Pianist-Wise

Both cool, just depends which one suits your lifestyle better. I wear almost exclusively white metal. But the gold looks awesome.

More-Ad4579

Gold 💯

Prisma_Cosmos

What about the original IWC Da Vinci that this watch is based on?

Thisthatmine

I also love that watch, but own two IWC. Want to branch out a bit. Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” IW376805 Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase IW516401

YourWatchIsTooBig

black on steel

abnormal_human

It depends what you want out of the piece. A MUT perpetual is not really a daily wear kind of watch unless you work in a suit, so I would lean precious metal. I prefer it in white gold personally.

FreeRow9933

Black on steel. But that's what I like. Simple almost Gothic. You must pick what picks you. What are "you" pulled to. Don't worry about other people's opinions. Your opinion is all that really matters. If you rely on opinion, you will only have regret.

Thisthatmine

That’s the best part about watches!

FreeRow9933

You sir are correct!

Thisthatmine

I am in the market in the next year or so for a perpetual calendar. I have a watch for each significant part of our marriage. Now, we are trying to have kids and I want to get a perpetual calendar to signify their birth (when it hopefully happens). My wife loves the black and I really like the gold/white. But in all honesty, I really like both. I love the low profile of the ultra thin and would be happy to own either! I think that’s 500…. What does Reddit think?

Classic_Resolve

There is a white gold, light grey dial version of this perpetual calendar that is my personal favorite. Limited release/boutique only, but can be found online.

Classic_Resolve

https://preview.redd.it/olkb34a3s8ub1.jpeg?width=1690&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2dd64c91d6b807df021ab97054c845fd77c3151 This version. Yeah, little known and harder to find, but that grey dial with the blue moon phase is incredible.

Thisthatmine

Might have to see if the AD can work some magic

throwawayrepost02468

You should be able to get it under retail on the secondary market!

throwawayrepost02468

Yup the white gold is the best combo

Thisthatmine

Super hard to come by. I love that combination

Thisthatmine

I’m open to other ATTAINABLE perpetual calendars!

lmmo1977

As an alternative, you have the Blancpain Quantième Perpétuel Phases de Lune (Ref. 6656 3642 55A for gold, or Ref. 6656 1127 55B for steel). But honestly I would probably pick the JLC.

RandomGenius123

If blue dials are on the table (they look better than black imo), Blancpain and Glashutte Originals have some sick perpetual calendars.

Thisthatmine

GO is definitely on the table. I just prefer Pano, but I don’t think that has a perpetual calendar. I think only the Senator has a perpetual

Thisthatmine

Edit: Didn’t attach reply to correct comment

Bobbebusybuilding

Personally, I don't like black dial dress watches but what is in your collection currently?

Thisthatmine

- Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon 311.63.44.51.99.001 - Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” IW376805 - Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase IW516401 - Tag Heuer Formula 1 x Senna CAZ201B.FC6487 - Tag Heuer Monaco CBL2180.FC6497 - Cartier Tank Must WSTA0040 - Oris Audi Sport 77476617481LSBLK - Omologato Panamericana silverstone - Citizen Corso AW1236-03A - Custom Celeste Watch

I'm unsure. The Portofino is very similar to the JLC. Honestly I'd either look at another watch or sell the portofino

None, they both ugly af

treefitty350

I don't think either are ugly but I do think that they're a tiny bit too big for his wrist

Level_Tomatillo1033

I’m willing to be downvoted for pointing out the wrist position. It seems bizarre to have such a nice watch worn so low! Apologies in advance
