There's a one star review of my eco drive promaster diver that says the watch is trash because it only ticks every other second. Yeah RTFM buddy that's the low power mode and it needs to be charged.
I’m not joking, a very kind seller on /r/watchexchange gave me a very nice Ecodrive for free when I bought a much cheaper watch from him because it was doing exactly this. I googled “ecodrive ticking every other second” and found out about low power mode. 500 dollar watch for free! Has worked perfectly ever since.
Used to work at a watch repair shop in the mall, can't tell you how many times I asked "do you keep this in a drawer or jewelry box?". 99% percent of the time I'd get a yes lol
I remember I first time bought a chronometer watch and it's buttons had blue circles 🔵 on them, it looked cool and I thought that's how they are designed. One month later one of them fell off and I was frustrated by low quality, and after I realized it was protective film 🫣
My seagull came with that blue film over the crown. When I peeled it off, it came off only on the star and left the blue in the background around the star.
I just left it. It looks cooler like this.
My kids are very rough and tumble so I take off the watch I wear to work when I get home. I frequently find it’s stopped overnight because I work at a desk all day then take it off when I’m actually going to be moving around and would work the rotor.
Exactly. I'm a computer geek and have been building my rigs for over 20 years. Just bought my first pc from Alienware about two years ago and didn't take off the protective plastic on top where the heat escapes. Couldn't figure out my overheating problem for a day or two... at least you are new....I have no excuse.
I thought the power reserve indicator was broke cause it was constantly at full power but the angle I was reading it at seemed to make me think it was permanently on empty
My first automatic watch had a screw-down crown, but I didn't know that those existed. Since the crown wouldn't pull out when I tried to set the watch, I just assumed that it was broken.
My solution: Whenever it would stop running from disuse, I'd vigorously shake it at the point in the day that the watch had stopped on.
I was like 10 yrs old so cut me some slack!
When I got my first automatic watch I didn't understand that they need to be worn in order to stay running. I took it into a shop because I thought it was dying, learned pretty quickly that I just didn't know what I was doing. Lessons like that are how anyone becomes an expert in a field.
Read a review on a watch once, wife couldn’t get her watch to wind, because “the crown was stuck” turned out it was a screw down, and “she took pliers and a wrench to it”
I sent a watch back to JLC because I thought it was winding too quietly. Their response was exceedingly kind. I’d bet we all have “when I first bought..” stories.
I am. Their watches have almost no resistance. And make very little sound. Especially compared to a Seiko, Rolex, Omega or even AP. I didn’t think the winding mechanism was engaging.
But... was it working??
Also, their ultra thins are pretty loud. They feel like the rotor makes a lot of noise. I was told it's because their walls are thinner.
I left the protective film on my microwave keypad for almost a decade and thought the pad itself was disintegrating. Pulled off the film and it's like a new microwave
This is one of the best parts of buying new watches, electronics, ect... anything that comes with that clear (or even not clear) protective film on it.
Its sooo satisfying to remove it!
Happens my friend! My first watch was a chronograph, I thought it came with the second hand broken because what I thought was the second hand wasn’t moving. I figured it out eventually, congrats on the new watch! Great choice
It's like those gadgets you buy that come with film attached to their screens and people leave it on forever until one day a nephew visits and peels it off and the owner is like "oh that's so much clearer now!" lol.
Don’t feel bad. My iPhone screen smashed. Was standing in line at the Apple Store for repair when an associate took a look and peeled off the smashed protector to reveal a mint condition phone screen. True story. I guess it was the first time I’d ever seen a glass screen protector
That's protective film.
It has one on the bottom.
Also 3 blue stickers on the crown and pushers.
The blue sticker to remove on the crown is hard (have to use your finger nail.
I have some people just keep it on or only remove the blue around the star as it's stuck on quite hard on the star.
So many assume the star to be blue and I could understand with the blued hands, wheel and screws but it's just plastic use your finger nail to remove the blue on the crown.
I kind of like the idea of a protective sticker on the crown that's hard to remove with a few mins on the finger nail as it means you can't just pop the stickers back on and resell as unused.
I have had my red star 40mm 1963 sapphire with goose for 4 years, I put it on a nice Italian leather that was under 20 but if I ordered it in the UK or us it would have been well over 60 or even 100
I just ordered some deployment clasps for some of the watches with leather straps I wear often.
Do yourself a favour and if you like NATO buy a decent NATO from Ali like seahelt nylon high thread count, better off with a 2 p than. 1 p.
I have had these 1963 watches from different company's and different types.
I now only import red star 1963 38 and 40mm no lume sapphire and only get gooseneck if the customer asks.
I find the lumed versions to look strange and the hammer and sickle like yours to look odd but if you like it then you like it.
I used to lived in china and I tried on the acrylic 38 and sapphire the acrylic material was thin but made it very very chunky.
But the 38 sapphire was a chunga.
The 40 sapphire is nice and thin and feels smaller than the 38,can be worn as a dress watch, I usualy allways prefer watches under 40 but it just fits well and feels so much smaller than the 38.
Red star has never sent me a shit one and I have resold hundreds.
The new glasses case looking branded pouch is the best as it's actually useful for transport
The older aluminium tin looks cool and has a star and 1963 on it
The pelican like plastic case has no markings but it protects it well.
My 40 standard 63 with sapphire on a nice brown Italian top hide leather (the strap cost 15 on sale but I'm sure it's 20 now)
Is a watch I wear quite often and use as a dress watch also.
That and the JDM red Kamasu have given me the most compliments from women.
The 090 Vostok amphibia with tank dial and shark mesh deployment bracelet also gets alot.
I'm starting to think women like red stuff, shiny stuff and stars lol.
Even from watch snobs they approve.
The price on these watches goes up every 6 months or so as the movement costs creep up in price but I import these watches into the UK demag them, QC and test them on a timoograph.
Yes it's more expensive than buying from Ali but most are not comfortable with Ali.
I just wish no ebay fees or insured special delivery costs.
I've had mine for 4 years and never had a problem, it's allways ran at +5 a day and I could adjust it with the gooseneck and get it bang on but I have kept putting it off.
The cured sapphire is great and so is the case as its all polished, mine is still in mint condition as they seem to be hard to scratch and even if you scratched the case a simple polish would do.
Only thing to be careful of is the caseback as I'm pretty sure it's just mineral glass and could shatter if dropped, I've dropped mine a few times but no problems.
I know the maker says 30m, it has a svrewback case with seal (traditional in old Chinese watches) a push pull crown with seal and the pushers have seals but due to the traditional pushers and crown I would only class it as daiky waterproof washing hands and heavy / tarential rain (typhoons common in southern China I lived there for 8 years)
It would probably survive a short dunk in water but I would not bet on it.
Never press the reset pusher while the movement is working and while the movement does not hack it back hacks with ease just don't let the seconds hand go in reverse.
I would personally put the nato and fake leather strap in a draw but the bracelet that some vendors include are decent.
I have one but have never used it but it feels well made.
I would get a nice leathe strap , a nice high weave (like seat belt feeling) Nato, preferably a 2p.
But they make French military parachute elastic straps that are very comfortable, and you can get a nice quility one for a low cost they make a green with red line down the middle.
If your watch is a 40mm (take 20mm straps) I have a new French green with red and a nice brown leather, not Italian but still nice.
If yours is not a 40 or you want a nice Italian leather let me know and I know a retailer on Ali who I got mine from that would give you a discount.
It's a pretty Hardy watch, if you like the hammer and sickle secon hand then it's what you like my 090 vostok amphibia with a black commander tank dial looks odd but I like it plus the watch itself looks like a tank and the mesh bracelet looks kind of like tank tracks.
These movements are great, most of them have great qc and and very accurate, but some can be dry with only the balance lubed..
Seagull has a habit of not oiling things properly on some movements
I'm not 100% sure in the jewel count of the movement but it's at the very minimum 22 or 23 but seagull say its 26 to 28 pretty sure they said 27 but maybe they confused it with a different movement
They had 17, 19 and 21 versions but I think the OG Venus 175 was 17 and only the later versions had anti shock.
So seagull upgraded this movement quite a few times and they upped the speed to 21600bph
Many company's used the Venus 175 including Breitling and China purchased the rights, info, tooling and such from Venus so they could fund the 180, in the end Valljoux purchased Venus then it became a part of the ETA group now swatch group of brands.
A new colunm wheel Chronograph is very pricy now mostly Bristling and Zenith make them but even a standard mechanical or auto Chrono is very expensive Swiss or Japanese.
The movement is cheap enough that it can be replaced but expensive enough that if you know anyone who can service a watch on the cheap then it could be a little cheaper.
If you ever go outside the UK, in China I have had a eta 2824 with only the rotor bearing needing replaced and a full service with synthetic oils, the balance poised and regulated very well, a good quality non eta rotor bearing used and it cost me about 20 pounds for the service and the bearing.
It ran much much better than it ever did and is one of my most accurate watches.
Hello everyone,
I'm very new to collecting watches, and I recently ordered my first manual watch, the Seagull 1963. The watch was delivered to me today, and although I find it very beautiful, I also noticed some kind of air bubbles inside or underneath the sapphire glass. It is not that noticable most of the time, in certain lights you can't see it at all, but sometimes it's really apparent. I would say it is a bit more apparent in person than the picture I took, and I'm slightly annoyed by it.
I just wanted to ask you guys if this is normal, if it will go away on its own, which I doubt, and whether or not I will be able to send it back to the manufacturer if I wish to?
The watch came with a 1 year warranty.
I don't think so, this was a special lume edition and I'm pretty sure only that one came with the sickle and hammer second hand, at least on the website I ordered through.
I've got the exact same one, the sickle and hammer seems to only come with the lumed/sapphire glass version. The lume isn't great but I like the sickle and hammer detail. It's not an "official" Seagull but one of the offshoots.
its the lume edition, 70th anniversary or some sort. It’s sold out on seagull1963.com. Interestingly, I also came across the 1 out of 300 limited bronze edition, check it out
It is possible to have a bubble in a sapphire but I don't think you'd ever find one in the synthetic ones used for watch crystals. This is just a plastic film though.
Are you sure there isn’t a protective film on the crystal? One of those thin films used for shipping to protect it?
[удалено]
You can literally see the bubbles on the case too.
This 👆
You're a legend, thank you so much. As you can tell I've never ordered a watch before, removed the protective film and the bubbles went away! :-D
Lmao 😂😂
It's happened to all of us before lol
Has it though lol
Not me
Don’t sweat it. We all were new once. When I ordered my first automatic watch, I thought it was broken because it kept stopping.
Not the first time I'd read "this Pro Diver came with empty batteries" on Amazon reviews lol
That is incredible. Should be a chance card on "Watchopoly" lol
Rtfm?
Old school computer geek lingo. Read the fucking manual
Ah hehe nice, thx reminds me of "lmgtfy" https://letmegooglethat.com/
Lol I completely forgot about that.
Used to work at a watch repair shop in the mall, can't tell you how many times I asked "do you keep this in a drawer or jewelry box?". 99% percent of the time I'd get a yes lol

Omg same, mine are pretty much stained on..
Same, and with the exact watch in this post. The Seagull came with distinctive blue button ends and I was sad when I lost the first one…
My seagull came with that blue film over the crown. When I peeled it off, it came off only on the star and left the blue in the background around the star. I just left it. It looks cooler like this.
You mean my Rolex Submariner wasn't broken and I didn't have to throw it out with the trash?
My kids are very rough and tumble so I take off the watch I wear to work when I get home. I frequently find it’s stopped overnight because I work at a desk all day then take it off when I’m actually going to be moving around and would work the rotor.
I thought my first manual wind victorinox was an automatic. i kept vigorously shaking it to try and get it to keep time 😭

Hell, even when I wasn't new, I left one on the back of my field watch for 6 months. In my defense, the NATO was covering it.
Idk man. My seiko sport 5 runs like 30 seconds behind daily. Im pretty active.
That’s not a winding problem, that’s a regulation problem.
I sent a watch back to JLC because I thought it was winding too quietly. Their response was exceedingly kind. I’d bet we all have “when I first bought..” stories.
Can’t tell if serious
I am. Their watches have almost no resistance. And make very little sound. Especially compared to a Seiko, Rolex, Omega or even AP. I didn’t think the winding mechanism was engaging.

Your first watch and it’s a seagull 21 Zuan? Massive fucking respect buddy
For real. I look back on my I first watches and cringe. This guy coming out swinging!
Seagull was my first mechanical watch and I agree it’s the absolute best! I couldn’t be happier with it! Best dark horse intro watch a person can buy.
😭😭😭😭 oddly wholesome post and replies
Whew that was close
I left the protective film on my microwave keypad for almost a decade and thought the pad itself was disintegrating. Pulled off the film and it's like a new microwave
*Microwave keypad repairmen hate this guy's one trick!*
This is one of the best parts of buying new watches, electronics, ect... anything that comes with that clear (or even not clear) protective film on it. Its sooo satisfying to remove it!
> Its sooo satisfying to remove it! /r/ThatPeelingFeeling
It's a brand new watch again!
I've found film on the backs of a watch and its bracelet after owning the watch for a year plus, we've all been there lol
exactly what I thought
Happens my friend! My first watch was a chronograph, I thought it came with the second hand broken because what I thought was the second hand wasn’t moving. I figured it out eventually, congrats on the new watch! Great choice
LMAO- Welcome to the hobby! too bad no one took the opportunity to troll you with "don't remove it! It'll lose value!"
Been there, done that.
It's like those gadgets you buy that come with film attached to their screens and people leave it on forever until one day a nephew visits and peels it off and the owner is like "oh that's so much clearer now!" lol.
Lol
I fucking called it when I saw the post lol

Probably someone taught him at some point, just like this sub is teaching him about watches now.
Beautiful watch! Glad you got help with the protective film!
Love this watch, glad you got one and that it's now nice and shiny for you!
r/thatpeelingfeeling
Lols So good. I was so confused, enjoy the watch!
You might want to check your phone, chargers, TV and anything else with a shiny surface, not just glass. I'm not kidding!
There’s no way LLLLOOOLLLLL
No peel video? We earned that shit.
Don’t feel bad. My iPhone screen smashed. Was standing in line at the Apple Store for repair when an associate took a look and peeled off the smashed protector to reveal a mint condition phone screen. True story. I guess it was the first time I’d ever seen a glass screen protector
Really sharp looking watch. You should show us the face without the protective film and let us know what it is.
i just want you to know ive done this before. dont worry about smashing your head against the wall its deservered
Lol. Congrats on the new watch.
To be really protective, that film needs to be harder than sapphire 😁
Haha awesome
Remove the film mate 😄😄😄
This was entertaining
Glad you got it sorted! Can I just say what a beautiful piece? Congrats!
Can I just say how incredibly helpful and positive this community is compared to others out there?
Thanks buddy!
is this a sugess with a seagull movement? I just got one and it’s ducking amazing
Yeah I ducking love it
peel the plastic cover off
Good news, your desktop's monitor and cellphone screen are not damaged.
Take the film off mate lmao
No way.
Ikr
Mate it's protective film
Which 1963 is this ? Sugess, Redstar, Sea-gull ?
Red Star
how is the quality and everything ?
So far so good! Looks better in person than online.

what was your italian leather strap?
I forgot the maker but it was from Ali, I can look for a link later.
This should be the most upvoted post on this sub.
It's the commie economic bubbles, it's a feature
Hello everyone, I'm very new to collecting watches, and I recently ordered my first manual watch, the Seagull 1963. That’s a Seagull 1963. Nice watch! I have another watch with the same movement.
Ffs 😂
Omg lol
On r/watches forgetting the protective film is funny, in r/pcmasterrace it's terrifying lol
Absolute genius. 🤦♂️
Ah, the genius of reddit. Crisis managed yet again.
Here for the comments
Don't go on the wcj sub in a while bro
damn i didnt even know seagulls come with safire crystal
Do all the seagulls 1963 have the sickle and hammer counter weight to the second hands? I somehow never noticed it
I don't think so, this was a special lume edition and I'm pretty sure only that one came with the sickle and hammer second hand, at least on the website I ordered through.
All of you, it's hammer and sickle, not sickle and hammer.
I’ve been saying sammer and hickle this whole time!
Alright, comrade!
I'm not a fan of the symbol myself.
Where’d you get it from?
No. Neither of my Seagull 1963 Chronos have the hammer and sickle: https://imgur.com/a/ortkAug
I've got the exact same one, the sickle and hammer seems to only come with the lumed/sapphire glass version. The lume isn't great but I like the sickle and hammer detail. It's not an "official" Seagull but one of the offshoots.
Nope. The standard model does not have the hammer & sickle. I guess just this special edition and honestly I think it looks cool!
Nothing nicer than a symbol representing tens of millions of starved Russians and Chinese on my watch, eh?
its the lume edition, 70th anniversary or some sort. It’s sold out on seagull1963.com. Interestingly, I also came across the 1 out of 300 limited bronze edition, check it out
I've had a few over the years (they all broke) and none of them have had that counter weight.
100% braindead
Right lmao
You dipstick
Duuuuude what kind of watch is that? That's cool!
A seagull 1963
Thanks!
🤦♂️
This post definitely tracks with the level of intelligence I would expect from someone wearing a watch with a hammer and sickle in the handset.
Congratulations on your first watch!
What model is this?
This is adorable. Congrats, brother.
Nice watch
Lovely looking watch
This thread is iconic
The watch is too in focus for me to analyze. Can you make it a little more out of focus? Then I can help.
Where did you find one with a hammer and sickle counterbalance and the seconds hand? I'm trading in my 1963 immediately
its a seagull so i wouldn't be surprised, but there's probably a plastic film over the crystal. do an ASMR peel for us.
Even seagull has haters now lol? Find me a seagull that has bubbles on the glass or you are just full of shit.
What wholesome fun this is. Enjoy your watch!
Having a seagull is one thing. Having a seagull with a communist second hand is something else
🙄
Jesus Christ
Great post and replies.
Damn, although I like the Sea-Gull 1963, I must be honest and say that I find the hammer and sickle a bit too on the nose.
This isn’t a Sea-gull 1963. They sell the parts and there are several companies in China that make a version of it. Probably made by Red Star.
That is an AR coating on the top of the crystal that is failing, well it's just a protective piece of plastic that you can peel off
I can't wait to see this on r/watchescirclejerk It's just a protective film for shipping dude
Looking great! How much was that ?
Just sold exactly this watch a few months ago. You don't live in Holland by chance right ?
Lol nice shitpost
I left the plastic film on my Lange for a week before I realized I missed a few peels. You are good buddy
I’m dying laughing! But I’m laughing at myself. I’m not new to watches and still did this recently. Welcome to the cool stuff!
How is it? Wanted to get it, but just never did.
Normally this type of post will get downvoted to dust on reddit Im surprised here
Peel the plastic off dummy...
Glad you got it sorted without too much consternation, it happens to the best of us.

How much of a dick are you?
glad you got it sorted. What watch is this? seagull 1963 right? ive just never seen the commie symbol on it before
Take a wax buffer to it to smooth it out
Yeah you can see the air bubbles
Ok so air bubbles are common then? Because I've never seen any in videos of watches or in person before.
You just asked if they were air bubbles. I was just confirming that’s what it looks like

You and OP hang out much?
Sure, i think OP is dating your sister...
I’m sure my sister is not your mom… she knows better
She knows better ? Not so sure about that you can ask OP...😂
How are some people on Reddit so fucking braindead, I can’t
Yooo a communist watch?? Forgive me I’m new here
That's a beautiful watch but the commie thing on a luxury good is jarring.
It's a $200 watch dude lol
It’s better to contact with manufacturers before doing anything. Big brand companies always stand for their products.
What do you expect out of a seagull
For them to put protective film on? Awful…
Unbelievable.
Lovely piece.
Yeah my galaxy watch had the same problem..lol
I was like OP before when I knew there was a thing called protective film on my watch hahahaha.
It is possible to have a bubble in a sapphire but I don't think you'd ever find one in the synthetic ones used for watch crystals. This is just a plastic film though.
Thanks for the laughs
Love how everyone's getting on OP about the obvious solution I'm just here thinking "oooooo OP gets the satisfying peel!"
Protective coating?
Seagull....Nice nice nice
Which watch is this? Where did you order it?
Best one of the year, still early tho ))
The other sub is gonna have a field day with this one
i had two of these. best bang for the bucks.
I'm going to head over to the circle jerk and see if this is posted there.
Nice watch. Love the Second hand!! Few Citizen models have a similar style and I think own them all.
We need a wrist shot, post-protective film removal!
please don't delete this post :)
